Putting Extreme in a closed environment?

Can an Airport Extreme be placed inside a closed environment, such as, an armoire? Does it have temperature or air flow requirements?

Mark P1,
From http://www.apple.com/airport the specifications are:
Environmental requirements
Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
Storage temperature: -13° to 140° F ( -25° to 60° C)
Relative humidity (operational): 20% to 80%
Relative humidity (storage): 10% to 90%
Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet
Maximum storage altitude: 15,000 feet

  • WebService in a closed environment?

    I am writing a concept for connecting applications to a central application. The interfaces will be both inbound and outbound. The "classic" way would be data exchange by cvs-files and writing shell scripts.
    However, are there any reasons to use WebServices in that straightforward closed environment?

  • Can I use Airport Extreme in a Windows environment?

    I have a Mac in my office on a Window's network. I can get through to the internet by manually setting the FTP Proxy Server and port. Is there a way that I can use AE to connect to the internet in this environment?

    Sorry, I meant Airport Express not Extreme.

  • Using new Extreme N in mixed environment, seems slower than plain old G...

    I got a new Extreme N couple days ago. Installed it as the main base, with an older Airport Extreme and an Express as WDS stations.
    My MacBook Pro does not have N hardware in it (grrrr, don't get me started . But my wife's MacBook does. I got the N because I really want a networked hard drive and figured we'll all have N at some point.
    I understand that the network speed gets knocked down to G speed if there are non N clients on it. However, I swear it seems noticeably slower overall than my plain old G network.
    Anyone else feeling like a mixed network is slower than plain G?
    Also, does anyone have a sense for how security options impact peformance?
    Thanks.
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I'm in a similar position, picking up the new AE this weekend, and form what I've read there's a better way, and here's what I'm going to do, maybe you'll want to try it:
    -Setup the new AEx as an N-only network, ramped up.
    -Connect either the older AEx or EXp via ethernet to it, and hang it off there in bridge mode.
    -Try to put some distance between the two, at least 20 feet.
    -You can set it up as a g-only network if you like, and it'll handle wireless communications from you, and the the other g base station, also offering it's services on your total network, but without decreasing the n-speed.
    Hope it helps. For more info on setting this up, consult the 'Designing Airport Extreme-n Networks" manual, here (PDF).

  • Extreme heating while closed in backpack

    I'm running the most recent iteration of the MacBook 15" - 2.4GHz that I have had for nearly three weeks now. Twice in the last week I have pulled the laptop out of my backpack to find it very hot, so much so that the colors on the LCD were not displaying correctly (no color, just shades of gray) and the battery life was down to about 5%. I shut the computer completely down and let it cool off for an hour or two before turning it back on. When it came back on the LCD worked just fine and the battery charged up to 100% just fine again.
    In both cases, the laptop had been plugged in just prior to its being closed and put in the backpack and was at (or very near) 100% battery. The laptop was in the backpack both times for only about an hour. The lid of the laptop had been closed, but the computer had not been manually shut down.
    At first I was worried that I had placed the laptop in front of one of my car's heating vents on the way home to create the heat, but the second time that it happened the laptop's bag was sitting in the seat with no vents directly on or near it. Has anyone else experienced this kind of "exceptional" heating while their MBPs are sitting in backpacks/bags? I've just installed the iStat widget so that I can provide more accurate temperature numbers if/when it happens again.
    -b-

    It would seem that the Mac is waking up or hadn't gone to sleep in the first place.
    A little bit of detective work analyzing the system logs can be used to determine if this is the case. If you've never delved into what the logs contain, try this procedure. First put the Mac to sleep, making sure it is really sleeping (pulsing LED pilot light, no sounds from the HDD). Wake it up and open Console, found in Utilities. Examine the contents of the Console Messages window, as well as the system.log output: correlate the time stamps to the various messages the computer puts out as it goes thru the process of going to sleep as well as waking up afterwards. Once familiar with what kind of messages both events (sleep/wakeup) produce, go back in time in the logs to those occasions when you have had the overheating incidents. While the Console Messages output may be truncated, you can usually find older system.log files archived further down the list (i.e., system.log.0.bz2, system.log.1.bz2, etc.). Check and see if the computer is, indeed, waking up when it shouldn't, and the info on the logs is the most reliable way to find out what's going on.
    Why? I have the suspicion that the magnetic closure on the new models is not working correctly and that the lid is popping open inside the bags due to a bump or jarring motion. Yours is but the latest of a ever-growing list of similar reports. On previous models you had to push a recessed button to get the lid to open.

  • Problem with closing environment

    We ran into a problem where our Environments were not closing properly. After a bit of inspection, we found there was a ConcurrentModificationException being thrown and eaten in the Environment.close() method during the referring database cleanup:
           Iterator iter = referringDbs.iterator();
           while (iter.hasNext()) {
                            Database db = (Database) iter.next();
                             * Save the db name before we attempt the close, it's
                             * unavailable after the close.
                            String dbName = db.getDebugName();
                            errors.append(dbName).append(" ");
                            try {
                                db.close();
                            } catch (RunRecoveryException e) {
                                throw e;
                            } catch (DatabaseException DBE) {
                                errors.append("\nWhile closing Database ");
                                errors.append(dbName);
                                errors.append(" encountered exception: ");
                                errors.append(DBE).append("\n");
                        }The referringDbs set is being changed during the close process, invalidating the iterator -> db.close () calls Database.close() which calls closeInternal() which calls back to Environment.removeReferringHandle() which has this line in it: referringDbs.remove(db);
    So once the ConcurrentModificationException is thrown, the finally block inside of Environment.close replaces that exception by throwing a new DatabaseException with the "There are 3 open database in the Environment..." message:
                if (errors.length() > 0) {
                    throw new DatabaseException(errors.toString());
                }So we are looking for help/info in two areas:
    1) The condition causing the ConcurrentModificationException
    2) When an exception other than RunRecoveryException and DatabaseException are thrown in Environment.close(), it would be desirable if the message was propagated up in some way
    Thanks

    Thanks for the report Erik. I suspect you are not closing all the Database handles that you have opened against the Environment that you are closing and that if you do, this problem will go away. Let me know if that workaround works for you.
    I'll work on a fix for this, but it probably won't be incorporated until the next release.

  • Extremely slow Crystal Reports environment

    <p>Hi there, I need help with my Crystal Reports environment, please!</p><p>While developing a report I&#39;ve noticed that everything is achieved with great slowness. Even right click menu shows up only after a couple of seconds. It takes more then that to select multiple objects and just simply drug them around a screen (depending on quantity of objects). I&#39;ve observed also that CPU usage spikes to 100% and the process that contributes to that spike is crw32 (I have 1G RAM). Other developer&#39;s computer handles the same report with much greater speed (his computer has similar hardware specifications and has same installation of Crystal). Conventional remedies, like rebooting, defragmenting..., didn&#39;t result in much. It wasn&#39;t always like that.... ?????</p><p>At least a hint on where to dig will be greatly appreciated :)</p><p>Thanks in advance.</p><p>Best regards. Nadya R.</p>

    That is really strange. I haven't seen that in the latest releases. In some of the older products there were some performance issues such as those but not recently.Â
    This sounds like a support issue perhaps. Have you checked the Kbase?Â

  • My MacBook Pro with retina display got extremely hot while closed an in a carrying case

    I have a new Macbook Pro with Retina display.  I left my house at approxomately 6 p.m and I took my macbook pro with me.  I put it in a protective Incase sleeve which I put in my messenger bag.  When I got to my final destination about 1 hour and 40 mintutes later when I went to retrieve my macbok the entire messenger bag was hot.  When I went to get the macbook out of the sleeve the actual computer was so hot I could barely touch it.  I could even smell the computer (you know that new comptuter smell) standing a few feet away from it in a cafe that his good ventilation.  When I left my house the battery was at 100% charge.  When I discovered the computer in this state I had to hold down the power button to get it to start.  When i logged in the battery was at 47%.  I discovered that I left iphoto, chrome and microsoft word open.  Should I be concerned?  The machine was so hot that I can not imagine that if this turns into a reoccuring issue that it won't damage the computer.  I wonder what would of happened had I not discovered it.

    When it gets to a certain temperatue it would have gone into thermal shutdown, from your scenario it looks like your machine failed to enter sleep mode or power nap due to some applications that was holding it up.
    as this machine was inside a sleeve and still running the machine couldn't dissipate the heat and ramped up the fans to attempt to cool itself hence the battery drain.

  • Closing Environment so that a new EnvImpl is created.

    Hi,
    We need to reopen the environment to a new set of log files in the file system. We use BDB inside a JVM running our app. We treat BDB local to one JVM process.
    I searched this community and looks like the only way is to close and reopen.
    We reference a single environment from many places, and this prevents the formation of a new EnvImpl which comes from a pool.
    I am in a siutation where in I do not have control over when the env is referenced or given up to get a fixed reference count.
    Is there a way to reopen an env such that a new EnvImpl is created? That is forceClose or something like that?
    Thanks,
    Aditya.

    I am not sure I understand the question completely. I think you are saying that JE is running on a JVM and many threads create Environment objects for the same envHome directory. The situation is that some of the treads do not close the Environment.  The functionality you would like is to be able to make the existing Environment objects not functional and a call to create an Environment be able to access the DB.  I don't know of a way to provide this functionality using the Environment object. If possible the Environment should be opened once and be used by multiple treads.

  • Extremely Disappointed with iLife 11 - Third Issue with Software

    This is an open letter to software developers at Apple.
    I purchased iLife 11 on day 1. I've come to trust apple and their heretofore excellent work. I have to say I will think twice about buying your software again.
    My issues with software "that just works" because a closed environment...
    iPhoto was stuck in an upgrade loop for over 48 hours.
    iPhoto still won't put a book together.
    And today iMovie is stuck searching through iPhoto for a business drive even though I am home and have no way of connecting to the office drive. There's no option to cancel and open iMovie, just an error message that just keeps repeating, and repeating and repeating.
    Did you even Beta this software apple? OMG, this is the biggest p.o.s. experience I've ever had (and that includes windows software bugs). Seriously APPLE, I've converted about 50 individuals into appleheads. You need to issue an apology for this release, my experience has sucked hard.

  • AE and closed network...deactivated my AE and won't hard or factory reset

    Hi there. Simply set my AE to a closed network, but didn't get a chance to set name and password before AE shut down. Now I can't gain green light by unplugging and replugging, soft, hard or factory reset. Ugh! I can't locate AE on Airport Utility 1)b/c not up and running and 2) b/c is now set as closed network.
    Can anybody tell me a trick to resetting AE beyond all the given resets?
    Can I access what the closed network settings (name/password) may be?
    Thanks.

    Sure... first I tried just unplugging but it plugged back in as amber light. Then I tried the reset button for 5 seconds. Then I tried for 10 seconds. Then I unplugged and plugged back in while holding reset button. I did this as outlined in the link above for resetting AE. With Admin utilities open the the settings named. The only time I can get a green light is the first moment it hits the socket, but it immediately goes solid amber. If I press and hold for 10 seconds I get 3 or 4 flashing green lights but it immediately goes amber (in this case, flashing amber)after the 3rd or 4th flashing green light.
    When I connected AE via Ethernet cable, I had to hold reset for 10 sec to get flashing amber in order to view AE details in AirPort Admin Utilities. I get a flashing amber light and the base station is named in the Admin Utilities with the name,Ethernet (WAN), the AirPort ID and Apple Base Station V6.3. When I choose configure, I get the error message, "The AirPort Admin Utility was unable to read the configuration fo the selected base station. An error occurred while reading the configuration." I always get this far and get stuck.
    Is it that the AE is not "green", or have I blocked access to reconfigure when I put it on a closed network? or both?
    Thanks...

  • Removing corrupt environment without losing database data?

    OK, I'm using Berkeley DB 4.3.28, Java API with no transactions or concurrency. We have several environments with multiple databases under them. Occasionally the environment gets corrupted. The original coder didn't understand this had to be coded for, so I'm trying to fix that.
    Normally, all database environments are opened with the following settings:
    setErrorPrefix(prefix);
    setPanicHandler(new EmsPanicHandler(prefix));
    setJoinEnvironment(true);
    I've recreated the environment corruption and used the following code to remove and recreate the environment (as suggested here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/ref/cam/fail.html)
              EnvironmentConfig env_config = new EmsEnvironmentConfig("CleanEnvironment");
              env_config.setAllowCreate(true);
                    env_config.setErrorPrefix("string");
                    env_config.setPanicHandler(new MyPanicHandler());
              Environment m_env_handle = null;
            try {
                 File m_file = new File(environment);
                 if (!m_file.exists())
                      System.err.println("Environment "+environment+" does not exist. Skipping");
                      return;
                 System.out.println("Attempting to remove environment "+environment+" with recovery enabled");
                  //m_env_handle = new Environment(m_file, env_config);
                 Environment.remove(m_file, true, env_config);
                 System.out.println("Attempting to recreate environment");
                 m_env_handle = new Environment(m_file, env_config);
            } catch (Throwable t) {
                System.err.println("Exception trying to recover environment "+environment+": "+t.getLocalizedMessage());
            finally
                 if (m_env_handle != null)
                      System.out.println("Closing environment "+environment);
                      try {
                           m_env_handle.close();
                           System.out.println("Environment "+environment+" closed successfully");
                      catch (Exception e)
                           System.err.println("Exception trying to close environment "+environment+": "+e.getLocalizedMessage());
            }This removes and recreates the environment without giving me an error message and apparently without touching any of the underlying databases.
    Unfortunately, when I try using a database in the environment again, I can open the environment, but I get this error when trying to open the database:

    The Database config is:
    DatabaseConfig db_config = new DatabaseConfig();
    db_config.setType(DatabaseType.BTREE);
    db_config.setAllowCreate(true);
    Can anyone tell why I would be getting this error? Or does removing the environment simply invalidate any database files that were underneath it?
    db_verify used against the database returns 0.

    So the latest - I totally removed my old databases and rebuilt my app, with the following environment config:

  • Is there a way to map videos in a 3D environment?

    Sorry, this is kinda hard to explain.  Is it possible to have the area in which you put clips be a 3D environment.  For example, could I put several clips around eachother in the shape of a sphere and scroll the camera around the sphere?  If this is not possible, is there a way to at least fake it? I've seen videos come from after effects that were mapped in 3D or at least it looked like it was 3D and I'm trying to make one myself.
    Sorry if I'm being vauge here, but I'm having trouble putting what I'm attempting to do into words.

  • Windows 10 Enterprise Edition: Installation and Development Environment Essentials: Thoughts & Assistance Req:

    Hello,
    I am in the architecture planning stage of my project and seeking personal and general good advice from Mircosoft engineers.  I am laying the foundation stones of a new development product using at least three more new technologies that are
    as new as Windows 10. Their are also around four or five technology partners with the latest version of their software that I wish to take onboard. Due to the sensitive nature of the project it is not wise for me to state each piece of technology used,
    so I will be as accurate as possible using the limited means I have.
    I wish to make a "closed" development environment, with the latest build (currently 9860), install the new software. Some of which installs fine, some of which is not compatabile with Windows 10. Regarding the latter I am in discussions with the
    technology providers to make a work-around and hammer and chisel through every issue. Very soon I hope to have a fully stable working development environment which paves the road to a first prototype. So i need to make a decision soon to "lock
    down" everything. I will miss Windows 10 updates but the advantage is when the project vertical slice is complete, the feedback and benefit will be larger for Windows 10 final product.
    This is probably my fifth or sixth early evaluation of the Windows platform and I am aware of the highs and lows of working with various versions using new builds, from the stability of win98 (becoming 2000 - minus millennium 1999 edition), to the quick uninstall
    of vista (it broke our internal projects). The solid bedrock of Windows NT (becoming XP) and so on. The good news is Windows 10 seems very good indeed.
    My questions are two:
    1) Would the windows team recommend a closed environment development in my situation, and are they aware of other developers doing it (is it wise from your end)? Is their a pool, can we communicate directly?
    or
    2) Would you recommend an open environment instead? Every install is updated, everything is all on-line and networked, this may lead to more breakages and sacrifice the finished product.
    The problem with approach number 2 is that a particular technology  may work with this build, but not the next one and vice versa. I will constantly be playing "bunny hop" trying to make it work.
    The problem with using number 1 is that you can have a "false dawn" view of the project, meaning you have managed to get it stable and develop code that fits that environment and build, but as soon as you do update six months later, it breaks due
    to feature change, it means massive re-work, ultimately breaking the product again.
    I have seen these approaches drown larger projects and wash away whole development teams.
    Its a tough one and a part of my R&D but very soon I need to make a decision.
    To explain more, some of the technology used will be:
    Windows 10 Enterprise - Perforce - Office 365 with Exchange Activ Synch - Any associated Intel CPU and GPU monitors.
    In other words very stable and solid technology. Their is about an equal number of other techs that are not so stable but I am slowly getting to work under Windows 10.All feedback would be given to Microsoft, regardless of environment 1 or 2.
    Any advice and help from the Microsoft Team is greatly appreciated.
    Yours Kindly,
    Asad

    I recently went to an Enterprise Mobility Summit Microsoft was holding at one of their facilities, and they spoke a bit about the future of Windows 10 - and here's what I left with: Microsoft isn't really sure themselves what kind of updating scheme they're
    going to be doing with Windows 10.  They had some ideas, but they're looking for feedback from enterprises and engineers about their plan.
    I don't think it was under an NDA, so I should have no problem discussing it:  their idea was to have different tracks (based on the user) with different upgrade schedules based on what the administrator deems appropriate for that user.  For instance,
    a consumer would have their OS automatically updated as soon as the update was available. while enterprises could stagger their users to a more manageable 3-month or 6-month schedule.  Microsoft wasn't sure how long to make this stagger schedule - talk
    of a 1 year stagger were floated, but nothing concrete.  Critical devices, like POS or ATMs, could be setup so they would never be upgraded, or only upgraded when the administrator specifically allows them to be upgraded.
    For you personally, it sounds like a closed development environment is better, since you're testing critical business applications.  Again, one never knows exactly what direction Microsoft will take, but with the amount of conversations and...
    warnings that dropped by various people at this meeting, it's pretty safe to say that they'll be some sort of timed release schedule for enterprises that you can prepare for.
    Hope that helps!

    That is thrown on the "environment.close" line in this section:
    private void closeEnvironment() {
    if (environment != null) {
    try {
    environment.close();
    } catch (DatabaseException e) {
    System.err.println("Error closing environment: " + e.toString());
    ... which is called as a "finally" at the end of my insert function. Should I just catch these and ignore them? Or is there something I should be doing to prevent these from occurring?

    Hi Justin,
    JE data is stored via Database objects. When you using the DPL, your EntityStore opens and closes the Databases for you. If you don't call EntityStore.close, it won't close the Databases and you'll get this "warning exception" when you close the Environment. Note that if you open/construct an EntityStore more than once, you'll have to close each instance.
    If you only see this message occasionally, I suspect that you're getting an exception during your app processing, before you close your store. The exception causes you to skip your normal shutdown code, that closes the store, so the store is not closed. You're probably not catching this exception and logging it, and it is not thrown upward because of the exception thrown by Environment.close. To find out what's happening, you'll need to catch and log the exception.
