Putting info into an Encripted Disk Image...?

I created an Encripted Disk Image to file some sensitive things in BUT how do I drag them into it...I show a .dmg icon but I cannot drag any folders into it...how do I go about this..?
Also when I click on the .dmg nothing happens...and it shows a folder of this under '/Volumes' which I can't find....HELP

robert larkin,
In case anything here might be of help to you.
1.
When I create a .dmg and save it to Documents, the drive icon appears in the top portion of my sidebar in the Finder. I can double click to open it, add items, delete items, and then eject it when I am done. I can put the .dmg file wherever I want it to be stored.

  • Speed up process to create web forms that put info into database

    Hi All
Basically what Im trying to ask is that I have been developing jsp pages with some javabeans to insert information into databases and then to insert/retreive this information. I have been doing this by hand and it takes time even though I have a library of beans that I have built overtime. My management wants me to deploy new forms within 30 minutes.
    Current method of creating forms
    ==========================
1 - I make the form in dreamweaver
2- Copy and paste the code into my IDE jpadpro
3- Put in the bean connection in the jsp page and create new insert statement
4 - Create the result page
    5- Ftp pages to server
I am looking to speed the process of creating new forms which connect to ms sql server (insert) information. I have already invested in crystal reports to make reports which i think has cut my development time by 10 foldes. I am looking for something similar to insert information into the databases.
If there is no such software then is there a java IDE where I can design web page forms visually (like dreamweaver/ microsoft infopath) and create the jdbc connections through wizards. I think microsofts visual studio does this, but i cant use this as i am working with j2ee with ms sql server database.
I am currently looking into eclipse with the myeclipse plugin to see if it will speed things up. Any suggestions from anyone most welcomed.
Also will JSF be better to use?
    Regards
    Antek

Cutting down development times of forms applications is probably why they created Formular (http://formular.redeye.no/ ).
In my company, we use Formular to define the data we wish to collect. We do this in XML. The XML is pretty straight forward to grasp. Formular uses this XML to generate the actual HTML form so you do not need to build several JSPs for each form you display. Formular handles multiple pages gracefully.
After building a few forms this way, you quickly learn ways to save time by establishing a library of commonly used components such as data field validators.
These are components you always end up using in many forms (such as data formating, value range checks, required checks, etc.).
The Formular package allows you to reuse those.
The other fine feature is the availability of data sources. These are classes that Formular uses to populate your forms (or example generate select lists, or radio buttons from data you have in a database or even a file).
Finally, you might be lucky to be in a position to create a single form processing model for your applications. What we have is a generic form processing class that receives data collected by Formular, and use the configuration data from the XML to determine how that data will be handled. You could for instance have a class that you call/invoke dynamically depending on how the form is configured.
I use the XML file custom parameters for this (these params and their values are invisible to the user but accessible by the generic form handler that comes with the package).
You might use these to specify the table you want that form to be posted into, and also maybe even specify exactly which fields.
For our usage, this package is of great value, and we found the licensing costs very attractive. A license is around 43 dollars per site if I remember well.
For the amount of work you put in, I'd recommend this software for you to evaluate.

  • How do you create a disk image using Disk Copy?

    Hello,
Is there any way you can create a disk image using Disc Copy? Is there a better way to create a Disk Image?
I would like to burn two copies of a 4.2 gig folder on my mac. I usually insert a blank DVD-R and then the mac asks if I would like to prepare it at which point I click "yes". An icon of a DVD disk appears on the desktop and then I drag my files onto this icon. It takes a few moments to create the disc image and then I click "burn". However, after the disc is burned the disc image disappears and I have to start all over again if I want to make another copy.
How can I save this disc image? If I could save the disc image, it would enable me to burn a second DVD right after the first without having to create the disk image all over again. This would save a lot if time.
    I am using OS 10.1.5
    Thank you for any suggestions

Thanks Niel for the info about creating a Disk Image with the Disk Copy utility in OS 10.1.5
That worked however when I insert a blank DVD-R, the disk image still has to be copied to the DVD-R buffer and then it can be burned. And so this doesn't really save any steps - the "copying into the buffer" step still has to occur whether or not you have created a disk image of your files. So creating a disk image doesn't really shorten the process of burning multiple copies of a DVD.
I will try to describe the steps more clearly:
Two of the three steps for creating a DVD (steps 2 and 3) are very time-consuming:
    1. put blank DVD into the drive (a DVD disk icon quickly appears)
    2. drag files onto this icon (this step takes a long time as the files are copied into the buffer)
    3. choose "burn" (the actual burning also takes a long time)
I was hoping that when I create two or more DVDs of the same files, I could first create a Disk image so that when I create the second DVD, step 2 could be skipped. That does not seem to be the case - the disk image still has to be re-loaded. And so I think I will not bother with the Disk image idea - it doesn't seem to be necessary or helpful when burning DVDs to backup data.
    Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Installing Classic onto a disk image

    Hi.
I have a Classic 'System Folder', together with a few legacy classic apps, on an external hard drive. I would much rather have them bundled together nicely in one single disk image which I could mount as and when I require classic -- which is very rarely, but I can't quite take the chance of getting rid completely yet.
I tried copying the system folder and the apps into a Sparse Disk Image and at first the Classic preference pane recognised the system folder and would launch Classic from it. But once I quit Classic and un-mounted the disk image, further attempt to launch Classic from the (re-mounted) disk Image proved fruitless. The Classic prefs pane would not see the System Folder on the disk image.
As far as I can see, drag and drop is the only way to get the System Folder onto the disk image because installing Classic direct from the Tiger Installer disc will mean booting from the installer disc, and I don't think that one can create or mount disk images whilst in that state.
Is what I am trying to do impossible? It seems to me that it should be possible to treat a Classic system folder located on a disk image just the same as a system folder located on a physical external drive, provided that the disk image is mounted as a volume.
BTW, the obvious question, I guess, is "Why don't you just leave your working System Folder where it is and stop all this dicking about with disk images. The answer is simply that I like to have as few 'things' about as possible, and having the Classic System Folder and the OS9 Apps nicely out of the way on a disk image just seems like a tidier option, if it can be done. I'm just finicky, I guess.
    Help, anyone?

Cool, thanks, I was kind of thinking along those lines, but couldn't quite put my finger on it/figure it out, that makes sense, appreciate it.
    Thanks again for quick reply,
    Stuart

  • How to trash a corrupted disk image ? ?

I have what I know is a corrupted disk image which I can't seem to delete by just putting it in the trash, then emptying it. When I attempt this, I just get a progress bar saying the trash is emptying, yet there is no blue on the progress bar, none at all, no matter how long I leave it up. To get rid of this bar, I even began trying some terminal commands to empty the trash, which was nerve wracking, as although I was using a trusted website to guide me, I haven't used the terminal before. In the end, I could only get rid of this progess bar by relaunching the finder.
So, how should I get rid of this disk image? I know it is definatley a corrupted image, as I began making it using disk utility, and stupidly quit disk utility whilst it was in the middle of making it.
Here is my info on the image:
    - It is encryped.
    - It's 60 GB in size.
    - I originally created it on an external hard drive, then moved it to my trash to try to delete it.
Any help on how to delete it from an experienced user? I'd be most grateful. I think for now I'll try putting it inside another larger disk image on my external drive and erasing that image using disk utility. I can't erase the whole external hard drive, so that's the only option I can think of.
I've just realised the problem maybe that I was trying to put a large 60 GB disk image in my iBook's trash, and as I only have 30 GB avaliable on my iBook's hard drive, surely that caused a problem? I can't believe I only just realised that... what an idiot I am!

I would suggest you reboot your Powerbook G4 and then download a copy of TrashIt <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8214>. That app should allow you to remove the large disk image in your Trash.
Also, the free space that you have on your internal hard drive shouldn't effect your Mac's ability to delete a file on a separate drive that is larger than that free space. If the disk image is corrupted, that's probably the real issue. After you get rid of the file, I would suggest running DiskWarrior on both of your drives to verify that everything is okay.

  • Creating an Encrypted Disk Image on an External (USB) Drive

I have an external 600 GB drive (2x 300 GB SATA 3.5" disks in a Thecus N2050 RAID0 external enclosure connected to iMac by USB2) onto which I would like to backup a large amount of data (500 GB).
I store this external drive away from my home (in the office) and since I cannot guarantee physically locking away the drive I would like to logically lock the drive by placing all the backup data into an encrypted disk image created on that volume.
I have tried creating an encrypted disk image on my USB volume in Disk Utility (Apple's instructions here) but I experience a number of issues not documented in the Apple article:
    1) I am not presented with a drop-down option for the size of the disk image.
    2) When I go ahead and try to creat the image I am told that the creation was impossible "file or folder does not exist".
Is it possible to create disk images on USB volumes (I cannot create such a large disk image on my iMac HDD as I do not have sufficient space).
    thanks in advance
    Raf

I realised that in Disk Utility you must not have any of your mounted drives highlighted in the left hand pane.

  • Is it possible to merge images from 4 different folders into a single 4x4 image with ps scripting?

So I have four folders that each contain 970 images.   The images in folder 1 are named exactly the same as the images in folder 2, 3, and 4.   All the images are also 400px in size.   What I'm trying to do is take all images of the same name from each of the 4 folders and put them into a single 800x800 images so that they are arranged in a 4x4 fashion.
Example:  Each folder has an image named mastiff1.psd.  All four mastiff images are different, but have the same name, and are the same size.  I'd like all four mastiff images to be combined into one double-size image that has all four of the mastiff images on it and save as mastiff1-4x4.
Is that something that photoshop scripting could do?  I'm a newb to this.  I've used actions plenty, but never scripting.

To script well you need to know a scripting programming language either JavaScript which works on both Photoshop Platforms or AppleScript which will only Apple Mac machines, Or VSbasic which will only run on windows.  You must also know how Photoshop works and know how  to use Photoshop well.
There are some things that can not be scripted for Adobe DOM does not have interfaces methods for all of Photoshop's features.  However there is an Adobe Plug-in with the name Scriptlistener witch is like a script recorder anything you do in Photoshop that can be recorded in actions will be recorded into two logs on you desktop when the Scriptlistener plug-in is installed one is in JavaScript syntax the other in VSbasic.   Like Actions there is no logic just hard coded step, step, step...  The code uses the Action Manager to do the Photoshop function.  So things that can not be scripted using Adobe DOM can be scripted using Action Manager code produced by the Scriptlistener Plug-in and the hard coded steps can be modifies into javascript functions that use variables.
I feel what you want to do would be a real ambitious first Photoshop script.  Adobe scripting documentation, sample script and Scriptlistener  are not part of the standard install. You must download these from Adobe. Adobe Photoshop Scripting | Adobe Developer Connection.
I don't actually know javascript but I can hack at it. Have done some document layout scripts.  Most require a PSD template but PasteImageRoll does not but all Image must come from the same folder.  Most of my fully automated script require all image to be in the same folder.  However  two of my scripts are interactive.  You can select each image to be layout from anywhere.  Images will be automatically re-sized and positioned which you can then tweak.
I'm not the best coder still you may want to look ate the code I came up with.

Photoshop scripting is powerful and I believe this package demonstrates this.
The package includes four simple rules to follow when making Photo Collage Template PSD files so they will be compatible with my Photoshop scripts.
There are twelve scripts in this package they provide the following functions:
TestCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to test a Photo Collage Template while you are making it with Photoshop.
CollageTemplateBuilder.jsx - Can build Templates compatible with this toolkit's scripts.
LayerToAlphaChan.jsx - Used to convert a Prototype Image Layer stack into a template document.
InteractivePopulateCollage.jsx - Used to interactively populate Any Photo Collage template. Offers most user control inserting pictures and text.
ReplaceCollageImage.jsx - use to replace a populated collage image Smart Object layer with an other image correctly resized and positioned.
ChangeTextSize.jsx - This script can be used to change Image stamps text size when the size used by the populating did not work well.
PopulateCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to Automatically populate a Photo Collage template and leave the populated copy open in Photoshop.
BatchOneImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Collage templates that only have one image inserted. The Collage or Image may be stamped with text.
BatchMultiImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with images in a source image folder. Easier to use than the interactive script. Saved collages can be tweaked.

  • Merge Disk Image Shadow Files

I've fallen into the habit of mounting disk images with a shadow file to save disk space on my laptop. I'd like to merge the shadow file back into the disk image in order to better preserve the changes I've made. After reading the man page for hdiutil it appeared as if this task would be as simple as performing a "convert," specifying the image file and the "ov" flag in the options. However, I continue to receive "Resource Busy" errors despite the image being unmounted. Am I attempting the impossible, or have I simply missed the solution to my problem? Would anyone with any knowledge about hdiutil be able to share some insight?

I think you can not use the option '-ov' with the verb 'convert'; convert into a new disk image will work
hdiutil convert old.dmg -format xxx -o new.dmg -shadow shadowfile
After checking that new.dmg is OK, you may remove old.dmg. Or do you mean you don't have enough disk space to do this?

  • Using disk image to put data into a "stick" for use by PC & Mac

I am trying to find a quick way to transfer a master file (almost 1gb) onto a series of "sticks" for circulation to colleagues.
I thought that if I made a disk image that would be OK. It works for Macs but PCs say they cannot find a progamme to open the stick. They recognise it as a FAT disk.
PLEASE help me save hours of time.
    Colin

I'm guessing the reason you want to 'bundle' up the files is to avoid the slower copy speed of lots of small files? If that or the desire to compress the data is you reason for using a disk image, zip them instead. Windows and most Macs will be able to open the zip file without additional software and any Macs that are running Jaguar or older OS versions will almost certainly have Stuffit Expander which can also decompress zip files.

  • Why do I have to make disk image of AVCHD to import into iMovie?

iMovie imports AVCHD format file structure from the camera quite easily. (or so I hear, I have not done so myself yet). I have footage from the camera saved to an external hard disk which I want to import into iMovie08. I am a newbie to Apple/Mac things. From these fora I learned that I need to make a disk image of the AVCHD directory and mount it. I did that and it seems to work.
But this process is painful. For the 12Gig save I made on 27Jan08, the disk utility took forever to make a disk image. It failed once complaining lack of disk space. I thought the firewire external disk was overwhelmed by IO and copied the directory to the internal disk, and made a disk image. I thought it was hung after about 15 minutes killed the diskutility. I had a corrupted image file. Then left diskutility running overnight and seems to have finished the job. This morning iMovie looked at the disk image and is estimating it is going to take 3 hours to bring it in. May be it is transcoding to a more editable format like mpeg-4 or something.
Why do I have to jump through so many hoops to make iMovie recognize the AVCHD structure? Why can't I just drag a AVCHD directory into iMovie and make it read it? If I can reclaim the 24 gigs in the internal disk at the end of the process, I guess I can live with it. But, come on, copying 12 gigs over Firewire, another hour to make a disk image... I was expecting better user experience than this. (Did I mention I am newbie for Apple? Recent refugee from the vistaland)

    AppleMan1958 wrote:
I would not recommend waiting until you have 12GB of AVCHD (which might import as 120GB of AIC). You could lose it all if your camera is dropped. I suggest you get in the habit of importing from your camera on a regular basis.
I agree, it is not a good idea to accumulate so much footage in the camera. But these were downloaded from the camera way back before I even bought the iMac. At that time, the only device that can deliver 1920x1080 video to my shiny 50inch TV in the living room was the camcorder! (and the OTA antenna). So I kept the clips in the camcorder, even after taking regular backups to the hard disk. That way I can show the clips to friends and family in full HD glory!
BTW 12 Gig is just 2 hours in HD. It is not much. I dread bringing my second backup 4 hours of our trip to Anguilla, St Marten etc. We all know HD requires ooodles and oodles of data and storage. I am not really complaining about the disk usage. My most important beef was: iMovie imports AVCHD from the camera easily. But it is unable to start from a AVCHD folder in the internal hard disk and start reading it. I can burn a DVD-ROM with AVCHD directory in the root and it reads it. I can copy AVCHD folder to the root of a thumbdrive and it reads it.
But put the very same AVCHD deeply nested in the external drive it barfs.
I am going to experiment after going home. I will create a symbolic link to the AVCHD folder from the root of the external disk. Heck, I am root here, I can even do an ln -s /nested/directory/deep/in/the/external/drive/AVCHD /AVCHD
and see if I can fool iMovie to import the files without creating a diskimage. If someone who has immediate access to iMac would do the experiment it would be very helpful

I have a 1st generation ipod, which I love. When I plug it into my computer an image of a disk with a magnifying glass appears (disk scan).  When it finishes the scan it always checks out. I then restart it and all looks fine. Each time I plug it in to the computer it does the same thing and it wont show up on my computer. The other strange thing is all of the songs are gone from the ipod but the disk space is still being used. When the ipod is not plugged into the computer everything look fine even the correct date shows up. Any ideas????? Thanks

  • How can I use my Mac G3 (OS 9.2.2) to make Windows disk images and compress them into Windows stuffed archives?

I have a collection of old Windows diskettes, 800 K and 1.4 MB.  I want to make disk images (or whatever is the Windows equivalent) and compress them into Windows stuffed archives.  I want Windows users to be able to download them, expand the stuffed archives, extract the disk images, and use the softsare on old Windows computers.  I need to do the work on a Power Macintosh beige G3 Tower using OS 9.2.2.  What software can I get to do it?

    To Jan, Greetings
Thank you for your message and for your suggestions.
Is WinZip a Mac application that makes compressed files that can be opened on a Windows computer?  If so, then do you have any notion where I could find a version old enough to run on OS 9.2.2?
I noticed that DropStuff 6.0, which I use on my G3 Tower, has an option to make compressed files that are self-extracting on Windows.  Do you know if that works?  I suppose that I could make such a file and then find somebody with a Windows computer to test if for me.
Yes, I could (shudder) get an old Windows computer somewhere, learn to use it, and do the project that way.  Do you know if the old versions of Windows include disk image programs and file compression  programs?  Or, would I need to buy some old software?
Thank you for the information about the size of the diskettes.  As you've probably noticed, I don't know very much about Windows things.
    Sincerely,
    Frontiersman

  • Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

  • Can I put Network Users on a sparse bundle disk image?

Hello! Can anyone out there help me figure out what seems to be a rather complicated feat?  I'm trying to get users to log in to client iMacs as if they were local accounts, but the user account information is stored on a sparse bundle disk image.
Long story short, I've currently got OS X Server running network user accounts tied to Active Directory.  When the users log in, they have a sparse bundle disk image that automatically mounts on their desktop.  This has been an effective solution for some of our software that doesn't play well with Network storage, as the sparse bundle is treated like local storage by the Macs.
However, what would be a much better solution for us is to actually have the whole user account stored on the disk image.  It's a little like the way FileVault 1 worked, except the disk image is actually stored on a network drive.  So far, as a proof-of-concept, I've been able to make this work manually: I've had to log in to a local admin user and then mount the user's sparse bundle with all their user folder contents contained within.  Then, once the user path is changed to point to the disk image, the user logs right in, everything works exactly as expected (once I got the permissions set correctly).  This method works exactly like a Network User account except that all the applications see it as local storage instead of network storage.
The trick, though, is automating this process.  I want a user to sit down in front of any iMac, log in and go straight to their account.  It would be nice if OS X Server was able to accommodate this with a setting, but it doesn't.  So, my plan so far has been to create a generic local account with a script on the desktop that users can open to login in.  The script would then mount the network share, then mount the sparse bundle disk image, then log the user in to their "local" account on the iMac.  When they log out, there's a login hook that restarts the machine.
So far, I'm stumbling over the fact that the sparse bundle unmount when logging out of the generic "login" account, preventing the user from logging in.  But if I leave the generic account logged in, then the loginhook to restart the computer doesn't work.
Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

IIRC, sparse images only grow as things are added, but do not shrink. Create a new one, mount the original, transfer your stuff from the original into the new one, and delete the original one.
