Putting music onto my new computer.

I have made the switch from PC to mac recently and was wondering about being able to tranfer my music from my iPod to my macbook without having to individually reload every cd I have.

iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here (you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well):

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

If you have an iPod touch or iPhone with iOS 4 or later software, or an iPad, you can use iTunes to transfer files between your computer and an app on your device that supports file sharing.
You might want to do this if, for example, you want to save files you create on your device to your computer, or take files with you so you can use them when you’re away from your computer.
You don’t need to sync your device to transfer files, but your device needs to be connected to your computer.
For information about supported apps, see the documentation for your apps.

To transfer files from your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to your computer:
Connect your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to your computer.
In iTunes, select your device (below Devices), and click the Apps button.
Below File Sharing, from the list on the left, select the app on your device that you want to transfer a file from.
From the list on the right, select the file you want to transfer, and click “Save to.”
In the window that appears, select the destination where you want to save the file, and click Choose.
The file is saved to the selected destination on your computer.
SImport music and video already on your computer
If you have audio or video files on your computer, you can import them into iTunes so that they appear in your iTunes library.

Here are ways to add items from your computer to your iTunes library:
Drag a file or folder from the Finder to the iTunes window.
If you add a folder, all the files it contains are added to your library.
In iTunes, choose File > “Add to Library,” locate a file or folder, and then click Choose.
By default, iTunes places a copy of each audio file in the iTunes folder (Home/Music); the original file remains in the current location. For information about adding an alias to the file (instead of creating a copy), see Add items to your library without copying them to your iTunes folder.

  • How can I get my old iTunes music onto my new computer without access to my old computer? I left my previous job and forgot to transfer my music. I bought iTunes match and it shows my old Mac as a device, but I cannot get the music off it.

How can I get my old iTunes music onto my new computer without access to my old computer? I left my previous job and forgot to transfer my music. I bought iTunes match and it shows my old Mac as a device, but I cannot access any of the old music. All I can find are what was on my iPhone, but that's not what I want. I need all my old music from my old Mac, which has been wiped clean by IT at my old job. BUT, I did have iCloud at that time and I thought all my music would be accessible through it. I don't understand the Cloud! And I'm thinking spending $24.99 on iTunes Match was a waste of money because I still can't access my old music.

When you are done with this issue, consider the computer back at the office may still
have access to your iTunes account, and it should be de-auhorized. You can do that
remotely, but be sure you carefully do not mess up your other computer iTunes libraries.
    Good luck & happy computing!

My PC crashed this past December and I just bought a Mac to replace it. I would like to move the music I had on my ITunes account onto the new computer. I went to the "Store" menus and selected "Check for Available Downloads". The computer said I had download everything I had waiting for me but my music isn't on this computer. Ideas thoughts and advice greatly appreciated. Also is there any way to get the music I imported or do I have to start from scratch. The old computer is toast completely unaccessible. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Is the hard drive dead?
If not, take it out and put the hard drive in an external case and plug it into your new computer.

  • .how do i get my i pod touch music onto my new computer.  my old computer is gone?

I want to transfer my i pod touch music to my new computer.  My old computer is gone.

Plug it in and sync it.
It will erase everything from the ipod so make sure that you have copied everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one first.

  • Putting purchased music onto a new computer

My old laptop crashed so I lost my music but my purchased iTunes songs are backed up on my iPod. I now have a new laptop and have downloaded iTunes onto it. I tried connecting my iPod and chose "Transfer Purchases" but it did nothing. Anyone know how I can get the songs I bought thru iTunes on my old laptop onto my new one?

If you can play a new free song, that means your new PC is authorized. When you plugin your ipod and choose itunes menu > Store > Transfer purchases, all the older songs should get copied back to your new PC.
Since that's not happening, I think the only thing left is to contact iTS support.

  • Putting tunes onto a new computer

help!! i don't even know if this is the right place to ask but i thought i'd try. This site is so big.
Anyway i have an ipod nano, my old computer which had my library and tunes on it has let me down so i have lost everything apart from what is on my nano at the moment. I have a new laptop now and have put the correct software on, i then plugged my nano in but the library is empty. How do i put the tunes that are currently on my nano, into the new library????
the support website explains how to do this if you have access to your old computer but i dont
If i'm asking this in the wrong place could you point me in the right direction
    Thankyou!

    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.
    Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), there's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
The above methods will depend on what version of iTunes you are running.
I can't vouch that any of them will work with iTunes version 7.

  • How do I get my DVD backed up music onto a new computer?

I feel really silly but I'm having problems. I just backed up my library to DVDs. The computer said that everything was backed up(it said burn complete) but I'm paranoid lol and I wanted to make sure. I stuck the disc in and nothing happened. I mean the computer "knew" that there was a disc in there but no list of songs or anything popped up. Can I not double check to make sure my library actually is on there like it said? Also when I switch to a new computer how do I get the backed up DVD into my itunes library? Do I have to click on something? When I backed up before with CDs it let me check to make sure everything was there AND it had an automatic import CD to library option. I'm so confused I need help.

When you open your iTunes on your new computer, you'll put your DVD in and it should be recognized as a backup. It should ask you if you want to restore from the disc.
This is directly from the iTunes "Help" documents:
    To restore backed-up files:
    Insert a backup disc.
A dialog appears, asking if you want to restore. To replace files in your iTunes library with files from the disc, select “Overwrite existing files.”
Click Restore and follow the onscreen prompts.

  • Getting my music onto my new computer

Very, very, very frustrated!!!  I've been trying for a week to get my music that is on my laptop, which is Windows Vista operating system, onto my new laptop, which is a HP, Windows 8.1 operating system.  I have signed up for sharing the home devices, but that has been to no avail.  I printed out directions to copy everything to an external hard drive but it tells me to go to the Library and "consolidate files" but that is not an option in the Library.  Ready to send itunes for a permanent walk and start all over, downloading all my music again.  Any suggestions that really work are welcome.  Please don't respond if it's a wile goose chase.

Maybe you already searched previous discussions and found a post on what you need to do - this gets asked daily.
If not, here's a post by forum regular Zevoneer that will help you

  • Transfering bought music onto a new computer?

I just bought a new computer and when I plugged in my ipod it asked to transfer bought music. I clicked yes and then it said it couldnt transfer any of my bought stuff becuase it says it's not authorized to play on this computer. Any one have an idea of how to fix this??

The instructions are in the link I provided:
"To authorize a computer to play purchases using your Apple Account
Select a song, video, or audiobook you've purchased (in your library or the Purchased playlist).
    Click the Play button.
If the computer is already authorized, the item plays. If the computer has not yet been authorized, iTunes asks you to enter the Apple ID and password you used to purchase the song."
