Putting new memory in the Mac Mini - tips and (especially) pitfalls

I had some problems in expanding my Mac Mini's memory. If you're about to do the same thing, you might find my experiences useful. So here they are.
*Opening the case*
I followed advice to use a plastic putty-knife and bought a one specially, but ran into a couple of problems. First, the plastic knives aren't as sharp as the metal ones, so they don't push into the available gap. I had to sharpen the edge before it would go in. The second problem was that, once in, it wasn't rigid enough to open the case; it just bent.
At this point I should have left it and gone back to the drawing board, but I was frustrated and flustered and casting about for anything that would do the job, I ended up using the metal blade of a set-square. This worked, but either because it wasn't flexible enough or because I was a bit coarse in my technique, I did some damage to the clips.
When I had to open the case a second time, I used a small, very thin and flexible cheese-grater and the case popped open like a dream.
*The four corner screws*
A magnetic screwdriver would have been a godsend for this, but since I didn't have one, I just had to tip the Mini up when the screw was loose and hope it didn't disappear into the workings. Fortunately none of them did. So not everything went wrong. Three of the screws were easy to put back - they could either be pushed or dropped into the holes, but the fourth couldn't be got in either way. Thinking about it afterwards, I realised I could have turned the mini upside down and put the screw on top of the screwdriver and got it in that way. But what I actually did was bite the end off a toothpick, jam it into the screw head and then push it in the hole. Worked a treat.
Note. My instructions said not to worry about the spring on the Airport antenna -"It's not going to fly off." Maybe not, but it can come loose and is then a pain to put back. Suddenly the wire holding the antenna doesn't seem long enough. Before you know it the antenna cable has come off completely, leaving you with the choice to undo all the screws again or forget about using Airport.
*Lifting the chassis*
Some advice tells you to undo all cables and take the chassis off completely, but the advice I followed suggested just undoing the fan control wire and propping the the chassis on a book with the others still attached. This worked fine. I was nervous about pulling on the wire to release the fan control, so I used a fingernail to get under the rim of the plug itself and popped it off that way.
*Fitting the RAM*
This was the easy part, though it didn't snap in as positively as some I've done.
*Putting back the fan control wire*
I put the wire back, as I thought, and powered up the Mini with the lid still off. I checked that the memory was properly installed and was delighted that it was. I vaguely noticed that the Mini was making a lot of noise, but thought that might be because the case was off. In my defence, none of the instructions identified the wire I was disconnecting as the fan control wire; they just called it "the little wire in front". Anyway, I put the lid back on, then realised I had a problem and took it off again. I learned (from Boece) that "the little wire in front" was indeed the fan control wire and saw that it was loose. It took me several tries to get it in. It's in an awkward place, is very small and sometimes appears to go in when it really hasn't. But whereas a few times I thought it had gone in, when it did go in I knew it was in. One of those things you only ever do once, but could do so much more easily the second time.
*Putting the lid back*
Some advice suggests just pushing the lid back, but you can cause damage that way. The clips can get bent out of shape. The best way is to use your cheese-grater or whatever, to gently ease the lid back on.
Conclusion
This was a bad experience; I had visions of ending up with an unusable machine and a void warranty. But in fact it I now have a quiet, working 2GB Mac Mini - and the nightmares have almost stopped. If you're about to try it, take comfort from the fact that you couldn't have as bad an experience as I had. Probably.
Michael

Pretty much describes my experience. I used a relatively thin metal putty knife to take the case off. Not to difficult doing one side at a time. I totally agree, a magnetic screw driver would have been very helpful when replacing the bracket. By far the biggest problem I had was the fan control wire. Very short cord in an awkward location. End of story - all back together with 2gb or ram. Probably toook 35-40 minutes (Including 10-15 fooling around with that lousy fan control wire.)

  • Is there a difference between the Mac Mini Server and installing the Lion Server on an iMac?

So, I was wondering what the difference is between installing the Lion Server on an iMac as opposed to buying the Mac Mini Server because the iMac may be a cheaper solution for me since I intend to purchase a new monitor, keyboard, mouse and accessories if i purchase the Mac Mini Server.

If you intend to leave the server running all the time a Mac mini server would probably make more sense.  It isn't necessary to keep a monitor, mouse and keyboard connected to the server as you can use the server management tools, remote desktop and SSH via the terminal window on your iMac to manage the server remotely once it's up and running.

  • I up graded my mac mini with a new hard drive and now need ios 10.9 how do i down load it so i can put it back on the mac

how do i get the ios 10.9 so i can put it back on the new hard drive

If the Mac mini shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier, install Mac OS X 10.6, update it to 10.6.8, open the Mac App Store, and download 10.9.
If the Mac mini shipped with 10.7 or newer, connect it to the Internet, restart it with the Command and R keys held down, and install an OS. If this isn't 10.9, open the Mac App Store and download it from there.

  • MAC MINI BLOCKED AND PASS OUT THE OPENING SESSION SCREEN

Hi, i hope someone can help me.
(i'm a french user, so i'll try to write a good english)
I've a mac MINI (2006) Intel Core Solo
    Mac OSX 10.4.11 Tiger
I've no problem since some days.
    I'm not the usual user.
    Is the problem description :
    • I start my Mac mini by pressing the button.
    • "dong"
    • I see the apple on the screen with spiral progression, all right.
    • after around 15 sec. normally, at this moment, the opening session screen must appear… (there are 2 users, one administrator [with password] and one guest without password) but it don't.
    • After a brief flash between two different screens (blue-gray),
the gray screen with the apple and the spiral progression re-appear but BLOCKED.
    • There are some pixels lost in disorder at the top-left of the screen (the place of the starting mouse-arrow).
    • After some minutes, or when i click away (i really don't now exactly when…)
The session of the guest starting normally (with some slownesses)
    • I've a AirPort connexion with an iMac (Leopard 10.5.5).
    • I've noted that someday, my usual network connexion have been changed (on the mac mini only), and my Mini tryed to connect with the connection of a neighbor.
As if this connexion have been selected by default.
•• I've tryed to restart, close the session etc.
•• I've lunched the disc utility to verify the HD…
•• And finally, I've passed out the problem with changing the account parameters :
Open the session automaticaly as a guest. Passed out but not resolved !!
••• THE PROBLEM STILL HERE, but for a few seconds only
    (blocking lasts only two seconds).
So, can someone help me ?
What type of problem can it be ?
I hope someone has allready resolved it !
    Thanks for reading.

Hi you, i love your post…
    So, i suggest you :
    - In the account parameters (in préf. sys.)
    - Delete the guest account created.
    - Specify start automatically as "your Admin. name"
    - Restart your computer.
    - Go one more time in the Account param. pane
    - Create a new guest account and modify some settings (such as display of the file for users in opening session screen etc.)
    - Specify automatic start with guest
    - Restart you Mac Mini.
Of course you have note that i've solved (for the moment only ?) the problem.
But i must say it for others, if someone has the same pb.
When my Mac Mini was Blocked, in fact, the computer seems all right but the display not. As the opening session screen was behind this static grey-apple-screen.
In addition, i've forgotten that there is an other screen with
"Démarrage de Mac OS X en cours…"
So, when i've unplugged my screen during the blocked screen,
and re-plugged it, all returns right : i can see my opening session screen…
So, if some one can tell me what is the problem exactly…
    I'm curious.
So, at this moment, i've started my Mini once time only.
I hope all stay right in future…
Thanks so munch to me for my response.

  • Download iOS 8 once to Mac Mini Server and upgrade all iOS devices in the network

Is it possible to download iOS8 only once to the Mac Mini Server and use it to upgrade all eligible iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) in the same LAN?
I tried the following methods and they are just not working:
    1. Connect an iPads Mini with Retina Display to the iTunes on Mac.  I chose Download Only. Once downloaded the iPad Software Upgrade, I upgraded the connected iPad to iOS8.  Then I connect another iPad (used to be on another Mac) to the same iTunes.  I had to download iOS 8 again.  It's not using the same downloaded iOS 8 file. (I did the same thing for an iPhone.  Same result.)
    2. I turned on the Caching Service (not Software Upgrade Service, i.e. for Mac Software) on the Mac Mini Server from the Server app.  I then repeat step 1 above and got the same result.  It seems that the Caching Service does not cache the iOS 8  Software Upgrade like what it does for other apps.  (I think I may need to use some Apple Scripts but I have no such experience.)

Yes, it should work that way.  However, I was told by an Apple Support that there was a problem and thus Server 3.2.1 was unable to do so.
I paid for Server 4 and it better provides the expected Caching Services for both iOS Software and Mac Software through the iOS and Mac App Stores.

I plugged in my wife's iPad.  Both ipads have the same apple id and password. iTunes synced everything from my iPad to my wife's iPad. Now we have two identical iPads looking like mine. Everything on her ipad seems gone and replaced with mine, all her recent holiday photos, emails, settings, etc etc seem gone.
    I'm toast!

  • I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?

  • I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open them up and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • I plan to purchase a Mac mini and then a new iPad.  Can I use the iPad as a monitor and keyboard for the Mac mini, either through the USB connection or thru Wi-Fi?

I plan to purchase a Mac mini and then a new iPad.  Can I use the iPad as a keyboard and screen for the Mac mini, using either the USB connector or Wi-Fi?

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi.  I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel.  Is is possible to hook these 2 up - iPad/mini, through Bluetooth?  I understand I need to use a regular monitor/keyboard/mouse on the initial install.

Iphoto won't recognize my memory card anymore (since a month ish?) but the mac itself does and puts the icon on the desktop.  How do I get it to recognize it again?

Thank you so much for responding.  I will look for the other disks.
One more question - I initially decided to do this because my Mac kept opening with the date changed to 2008, and I keep having to re - enter my Web key.  In addition, it was running much slower.  Since I 'cleaned' everything out, I thought all would work perfect.  This morning, the date changed to 2008; again AND it again asks for my Web key.  Does this mean my Mac has reached it's almost end or could I have a 'bug' on it?
Again, thanks so much for your suggestions.

  • HT4889 Trying to migrate from Mac-mini Tiger to Mac-mini Lion and Migration Assistant cannot find my Firewire, 400 to 800, "T" disk although it show up in the new Mac's computer folder. Help

Trying to migrate from Mac-mini Tiger to Mac-mini Lion and Migration Assistant cannot find my Firewire, 400 to 800, "T" disk although it shows up in the new Mac's computer folder. It seems that Mac-mini Tiger is as it should be and the firewire cable is OK.  Something about the Migration Assistant is being missed, but I have no idea what it is.
    Help

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

  • May i use the new ipad like a mac mini ? Thank you

HI, does the new ipad the same job as the mac mini, maybe a little more or a little less depends on the context ? thy.

With a standard keyboard, a mouse or why not the trackpad, could i connect to one pc monitor ?
You can connect a Bluetooth keyboard to an iPad, but you cannot use a mouse or any other pointing device. You can mirror the iPad's screen to an external monitor, if you need a large screen from time to time.
Beyond that, as the others have said you will need to tell us what you wish to do. The we can offer opinions on how suitable, if at all, we think an iPad would be.

  • Can you use PC-1066 memory in 2011 Mac Mini?

I have a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" with the standard 4Gb of PC-1066 and I'm looking into buying the 2011 Mac Mini base model.
Now, if I purchase 8Gb of PC-1066 for my MBP, is the Mini compatible with the PC-1066 memory? I know both the MBP and Mini use the same form factor memory, but the Mini takes PC-10600. With PCs, this sort of backwards compatibility is pretty standard but I'm still pretty new to Macs and I'm not sure how fickle they are.
Anyone know if you can use PC-1066 in place of PC-10600 in the Mac Mini?

Works physically, but the 1066MHz RAM is a lower speed than the 1333MHz RAM that 2011 Mini uses.
Personally I'd leave the MacBook as is and order the correct upgrade for the Mini.

  • What Monitors WILL work with the Mac-Mini?

If the new Mac-Mini does not put out analog video and Apple does not state this, what monitors will work with it?

I was able to get an Apple Studio Display to work via the adapter in the Mac Mini box combined with that huge DVI to ADC adapter they had sold me years ago. In the Apple Store I really had to press them to assure me my display would work as they told me they'd charge me a re-stock fee if I had to bring the Mini back. I pressed the point that Apple should know if a monitor it made works with a computer it made. The rep asked around and we both searched the web and then she was able to confirm it would work. They really need a list of acceptable monitors. If anyone locates such a list, please let us all know!
