Putting old MBP drive in new MBP

I have a new 13" MBP(November 2010) and an "old" 13" MBP(summer 2009). The old MBP died and I swapped out the drive to the new computer. There appears to be no problem with it residing now in the new computer. The OS was up to date on the old computer. I read a recent post where this question came up with a person swapping an old MB drive into a new MBP. The poster was advised not to do it. What is the wisdom in the case of a MBP to MBP swap? Thanks!

Thank you for your quick and thorough reply, Dale.
You are welcome!
Of course things are never quite as simple as the question. I would have taken the suggested course of action but for the fact that: (1)The "old" drive has 400GB+ data on it and the new drive is 320GB,
Oh, I see!
(2) I need it operational and ready to go when I leave for an extended trip outside of the US on Tuesday, meaning I can't buy more drives nor spend a ton of time with this project.
You might be able to get away with that for awhile.
I am a little annoyed that my old MBP decided to die at this time
What happened to it?
The OS X version was the same on both drives, by the way. I should have indicated 10.6.5 in my original post.
Yes, but it is still possible there could be things missing, in the OS on the old drive, the the new Mac needs thereby causing issues.
Of course now I have been using the old drive in the new MBP and have done some updating, as well. Not sure how that plays into it all.
Well, I would download and install the 10.6.5 Combo update then if you used the delta update supplied by Software Update. You can install it right over what you have now.
You'll have better results with the Combo under these circumstances.
Then maybe you can do the fresh install the right way when you get back.

  • Beachball and hanging after putting old hard drive into new MacBook Pro

    Hi there,
I really hope to find some help here.
    The situation:
I had a MacBook Pro Early 2008 running Lion (10.7.5) until it died about a week ago (mainboard broken).
In this old Macbook Pro I had two hard drives: 128GB SSD and 1TB SATA 5400.
I bought a second hand MacBook Pro Late 2011 on ebay and upgraded the Ram to 16 GB.
Then I put the two hard drives in the new MacBook Pro Late 2011.
The Macbook is super fast and very responsive but every couple of minutes it is hanging for a few seconds or I get a beachball randomly.
This can happen in Finder, Google Chrome, Adobe Dreamweaver, basically anytime using any software.
I tried to create a new account and see if the problem persists. And yes, it does.
I tested the hard drives (disk utility) and the Ram (memtest/terminal) and all is ok with this.
The Macbook Pro Late 2011 comes with a 256 GB SSD and an empty slot for the second hard drive. The Macbook seems to function normal when using the 256GB SSD with Lion installed.
Unfortunately my external backup hard drive is not working anymore so I can't restore from there.
What do you recommend? Would it make sense to make a backup now, take out the 128GB and put in the 256 GB hard drive?
    Please advice!
Thanks for any kind of help in advance!
    Chris

I know people that have been doing things for longer than 10 years and they know jack. Formatting the HD is not really good "advice" in this situation.
I'm not cocksure - you just think I am because I'm disagreeing with you opinion, which you believe to be sacred (because you've been commenting for 10 years?).
So I thank you sir for your opinion but I certainly do not need your luck.
    Later.

  • Transfer iTunes Library from old PC to a new MBP

My daughter purchased a new MBP recently. What is the easiest way to transfer her iTunes library from her old PC to the new MBP? Can she do this simply by syncing her iphone with the new computer?

The easiest way is to have the Apple Store do it.
You can also call Apple support and they will wlak you through it.
You can also type "move itunes library from pc to mac" into the google search bar.
"Can she do this simply by syncing her iphone with the new computer?"
No.  It will erase the iphone if you sync it to a blank computer.  The iphone is not a storage/backup device.

Trying to download photos from IPHONE, IPAD to IPHOTO in IMAC after installing new hard drive.
How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.

  • Z60m - transfer intervideo DVD, diskcopy, MS office from old hard drive to new hard drive

I have a Z60m, after 3 years an 2 months (it had 3 year warranty), had a blue screen  and could not recover. So I got a new hard drive from Lenovo. How do I transfer programs such as Inter video DVD, Disk copy and MS office which I have on old hard drive to new one ? I don't mind if I got all the settings the lap top came with 3 years ago, but I had added MS office (and now lost the purchase key code to download it again)
    Thank you.

maybe you could use something like Acronis True image.

  • What is the correct way to transfer data from old hard drive to new Crucial SSD on a mid 2010 13" MBP

I just bought an Crucial M550 256GB for my mid 2010 MBP. And I'm not clear on the data transfer instructions.
    1) it came with Acronis instalation kit with a blank CD and a usb cable. I'm not sure what this CD is used for?
    2) is it best to install the SSD with a fresh OSX download and then just use time machine to load all my previous settings?
    3) or do I partition the SSD before I install it in the MBP and transfer using a clone?
Not sure what to do here...

Well, I am not familiar with the Crucial kit you got - you might want to ask them about that blank CD...... however, I did install an SSD and this is what I did:
I ordered a kit from OWC which included an external USB hard drive enclosure and tools. When it arrived, I first installed it in the external enclosre, hooked it to my MBP and then used CarbonCopyCloner to make a full bootable clone of my system on the new SSD after formatting it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the GUID partition scheme. I then uninstalled the internal, installed the SSD in its place (following the install video availabe at OWC) and booted up - that was it. I installed the old internal drive into the external enclosure for an instantaneous bootable cbackup.

  • Problem putting C2D hard drive in i7 MBP?

I have a MBP C2D with a 7200rpm 500GB hard drive. I just got my new i7 MBP, opened it up and put in my old hard drive (10.6.3). When I boot, the apple appears on the screen and then nothing else. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any workaround, other than using Migration Assistant?

Did you damage something performing the swap? All MacBook & MacBook Pros use 2.5" SATA drives and have for many years (You'd have to back a long way to get to the models that used parallel ATA.)
The only concerns about drive swapping are things like heat & differences in power consumption -- but the drive would at least "work" even if not a recommended drive.
Turn off the Mac. Press and hold down the "option" key while powering it up and keep holding it until you see one or more icons allowing you to select the boot device. You might need to reset the boot device via "System Preferences" -> "Startup Disk" -> pick the disk you want to use.
If that doesn't work, insert the install DVD that came with the new Mac and boot the Mac will holding down the letter 'C' on the keyboard (boot from CD/DVD). Once the system boots, pick your language, then use the menubar at the top to select "Disk Utility" -- check to see if Disk Utility can see the internal hard drive and/or reports any problems with it.
I personally would have just opted to use the "Migration Assistant". Put a firewire 800 cable between the two macs OR an ethernet cable between the two macs. It'll take a few hours to do the copy, but this way you're running the new machine with all original components under warranty.

  • How to populate iTunes library on external hard drive onto new MBP.

I have a Powerbook G4 that is slowly dying. I have a new MBP that I want to populate my iTunes library onto without moving my music off my external hard drive. I've tried holding down the OPTION key while launching iTunes and selecting the iTunes Library file, but it seems to only load songs that were added in 2006 or later.
How do I get a current iTunes Library file that will populate all the songs?
Or am I going about this the wrong way?
    Thanks!!

i want to keep the music on the external HD, and I have linked the MBP iTunes account to the external HD (as in where to look for music), but I just can't get the whole library to populate into the new iTunes account.
    Thanks!

  • Can't transfer old mac contents to new MBP C2D- Firewire issue?

I started my shiny new MBP and went through the usual stuff, until it asked me to boot my old Powerbook G4 (800mHz) in target mode. The setup program did not detect anything via the FW400 cable.
I went ahead anyway and tried to open it from target mode in the finder, but it does not detect it either.
In Network preferences;Network Port Configurations, the option "Built-in Firewire" is greyed out. What does that mean?
Is there something I am missing? Anyone else having issues with firewire?
    thanks

I am having a similar problem. The only difference is a Firewire icon shows up on my desk top and I can never open it.

  • Can't Remove Office 2004 Test Drive from new MBP C2D.

I received my new MBP C2D yesterday. I'm trying to remove Office 2004 Test Drive so I can install the full version. When I run the the Remove Office application it posts a log on the desktop that indicates that it located the Office 2004 Test Drive folder, but when I get to the Results page of the Remove Office application it does not show me the option to remove the folder. When I click continue it says: "You have not chosen to remove any Microsoft Office items." Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there any other way to remove the Test Drive? Please help!

I installed the office 2004 software, and at the end of the installation it will give you the option to uninstall the test drive software. Good luck.

  • Help with difference in speed Old MBP 17" vs NEW MBP 13"

I have the original 17" MBP (2.16 ICD, 2G 667MHz RAM, 120G HD) as well as the first MBA (I use for travel).
I have been thinking of combining the two and getting the top model 13" MBP.
I would use it with two separate 23" Cinema monitors while at my desk, and be able to travel easily with it when I am not at my desk.
My question is how much difference is my old 17" to the new 13"?
I do not do much video, some photo (iPhoto only) Mostly lots of web based things and LOTS of emails...
It would be nice to not have both but only have one. I am concerned the 13" is not as powerful as I think it is.

It is worth the extra for the 15" if I am not into big graphics?
Based on what you said earlier about your use being mostly web based the 13" would be perfect unless you just want the extra screen real estate and are willing to pay a premium for it.
Will the 13" run a dual monitor setup?
    Yes

  • How do I move my QT Pro from my old Powerbook to my new MBP?

I am replacing my PB with a MBP. How do I move/load my paid QT Pro from the PB to MBP?
    Thanks, 0-0bill

You can just type your registration code in the Quicktime preferences of your new MBP. The installed Quicktime Player application holds all the pro functions. It just needs to be unlocked.
To find your registration code open system preferences, click on quicktime and then click on the register tab
I think that you should then disable the Quicktime Pro function on your old computer as the licence is for one machine at a time.

  • Moving Iweb files from old hard drive to new laptop

Hi, just replaced my old Powerbook with a new MacBook Pro and I have been sent my old hard drive and fit it in to an enclosure to let me have access to my old pics, music etc but I am struggling to find the iweb files for my websites
I know they were there before it went in for a screen repair and everything else looks ok so just wondered if I am looking in the wrong place
    Any help much appreciated
    Tony

The primary file you need to move is named Domain.sites (iWeb 2) or Domain.sites2 (iWeb 3). it's locted in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.  Copy that to the same folder on your new MBP.
    However:
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
Once you make the libraries visible you can easily find the file you need and move it into the new library. If you have problems  opening the domain file for the first time try the following:
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

Macbook Pro 2.16 7200rpm Hd   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Boy is It Hot

The heat was pretty bad, like i said, botom of case getting to massive temperatures. Even when just surfing the net etc. The problem for me was that it was so hot that you couldnt touch it for more than about a second, and you certianly couldnt use it on your lap. I also found that the fans were not coming on to a high setting when the laptop was really hot, and this was not helping the issue. Apple were amazing though. I rang them and they ran me through some tests, these didnt work so i said i wanted a replacement, they didnt argue or try to put me off though. They fully respected my desicion and ordered me a new laptop the same day. I even get to keep the old one untill after the replacement arrives so that i can do the whole sync thing that caused me to start this topic!
