Putting OS 9 Drivers Safely Onto A Hard Drive With Panther On It:

It does not have OS 9 drivers. I do not have any Panther CDs. or Tiger CDs. My hard drive enclosures have arrived and I got all the files organized and I put OS 9 drivers on 120gb Maxtor and also 20gb western digital that used to have Windows 98 on it...I put OS 9 drivers on that.
The only two hard drives that do not have OS 9 drivers is that NTFS formatted one, and also the hard drive with 10.3.9 only.
That hard drive is being used in an imac g3. Right now I only have two working imac g3s and nothing else works.
=======
I am nervous about this, but can I take the imac2 hard drive out, temporarily put it in an enclosure, connect the enclosure to the imac1 with a hard drive containing OS 9 drivers & OS 9.2.2 & OS 10.3.9, log into 9.2.2, back up the entire "external" hard drive, erase it, put OS 9 drivers on it, and move the backed up files back onto it and also stick OS 9.2.2 on it also, take it out of the enclosure, and put it back in the imac2?????
Or should I buy OS X CDs??????????????
Is it possible to install with an external DVD drive?????????
Will the external DVD drive need a fire wire cable?????????
Can I buy a slot-loading DVD drive to put into the imacs???????????

OS 9 Drivers are installed prior to any other software, usually.
If a drive has partitions on it, installing drivers to only one of
these partitions may be possible, but they are on an OS 9
installer or on an OS X installer in the case of pre-10.5 OS X.
You can use OS9 as Classic, a non-boot use of system 9
under Mac OS X. This does not require OS 9 Drivers to use.
But dual-booting or booting OS 9 off a drive needs drivers.
If you are running an OS X version and have no installer disc
you essentially have no license to run it; and no way to be
able to maintain or reinstall the system correctly. You can't
drag & drop install Mac OSX. That requires clone utilities
in order to move a bootable copy of OS X (to external FW.)
Tiger being the last supported OS X version for Classic and
also for dual-boot computers which can support OS9 & OSX.
Panther install discs have a feature when the OS is first installed
to add those OS 9 Drivers; and an OS 9 installer also has the
ability to install OS 9 Drivers.
And in older iMac G3 computers, some did not get the required
Firmware update; so that would be installed with OS 9 running
the computer, installed on the hard disk drive.
Some vendors may still have replacement or upgrade optical
drives capable of booting an iMac G3 from an installer DVD.
Check OWC web page, or MCE, these offered drive upgrades.
So, unless you have an OS 9 installer, or an OS X installer with
the OS 9 Drivers install feature, getting those drivers is next to
impossible. Moving the hard disk drive around won't do it.
And having an OS X already on a drive, means you can't just
install OS 9 drivers that late in the game.
(But you can transfer files between Macs in several ways; one
with a FireWire cable, if the Mac you want files from is booted
into FireWire Target Disk Mode, it appears like an external drive
& the second Mac you want to drag a file into, is running normal.
No removing a drive to just get info from the Mac to another.)
You would need a FireWire cable for an external DVD drive, and
also for FW Target Disk Mode. The USB1.1 is way too slow for
using any external drive, hard disk or optical, with older Macs.
A bootable external drive would be FireWire, not USB 2.0 or 1.1.
For other transfers, you may need to get a special Ethernet cable.
Good luck & happy computing!

You can never, never migrate an installed copy of PSE. It's just too complex and you can't get to all the bits and bobs.
First you will have to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
which will not seem to do anything, but is necessary to break the links within PSE so that you can pitch the bits manually. Then you will have to go around, not only to applications, but also to your username>library>preferences and most importantly to the library at the top level of your hard drive>application support>adobe, and remove everything you can find. Spotlight will not help with this kind of search, so don't try that.
Then you can install PSE from scratch.

  • Moving iPod material onto the hard drive

I have been saving all my music on an external drive which is now corrupted. How do I get the material from my iPod onto the hard drive of my computer instead?

If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to DVD. I am trying to edit the film clips using Premier Elements 4.0. so I can reburn the films on a single BluRay disc. Some of the film clips copy into the project but others don't. I tried copying the VOB filed onto my hard drive and then changing the file extensions on the VOB files to MPEG but this was no help. Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    What do you have now.....
What computer operating system do you have?
We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
Does the above scenario apply to you?
The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
    1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
    2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
    3. Go to
    Get Media
"DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
"Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
    Should work fine.
Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.
    Thank you.

My user folder has suddenly disappeared from my hard drive though if I do a find for it it comes up as still being there with all its data. Can drag a duplicate copy from the find window back onto the hard drive but don't want two copies there with one of them hidden. Any suggestions anyone?

    Did you update to 10.9.3?
If you did then update to iTunes 11.2.1.
That is the fix for that problem.

You could also pull the drive out of your MBP and use an external USB case or SATA - USB dongle to hook it to another Mac.

  • Backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

Help! My husband backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone from my library! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

    Hello Nataroo007,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
There is a file in the iTunes library folder that contains your playlist information is the iTunes Library.xml file.
Try and find the file, usually located in one of these locations depending on your OS:
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes Folder
    Mac OS X
    /Users/[your username]/Music
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\
Then you can import this file to your iTunes Library like this:
    1. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
    2. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file
    3. Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.
Note: information in this post comes from article:

I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?  Do I have to make a playlist for each cd and then transfer it to my iPhone?

When you buy your new iMac you will be able to have the installation process transfer all your applications, data (including music, pictures, documents, etc) and settings to your new computer. In the past that was done via Firewire. I'm not entirely sure of the process with the new iMacs that don't have firewire. I think it can be done via ethernet and probably via tha thunderbolt cord using a firewire adapter but you'll want to check that out.
With the your new computer properly connected to your old computer, the initial booting of the new computer will include the ability to move everything over.
If for some reason you don't want to do that (smart if you have some horrible software issue that is causing problems) you can connect your old computer to the new one and start it in Target Disk mode where it will be seen as a hard drive. You can then manually copy over all your music and import that into iTunes (and any other data you want).
Somebody here will surely point you to directions for connecting an older iMac with no Thunderbolt to a newer iMac with no Firewire.

  • I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) Would it let me get them back?

I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) If I were to use iCloud, would it still take those songs and let me listen to them (and maybe re-download them?) Or am I out of luck?

Open iTunes, go to the iTunes Store, and then go to Purchased on the right hand side under Music Quick Links.
You can re-download all the songs, apps, or books you have previously purchased.
I'm not sure if this is a requirement, but just in case, make sure you download the latest version of iTunes (v10.3) too.

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.
