Putting personal files on ipod

i'm contemplating buying ipod 80gb. everything about it matches what i need. but one thing. i've asked around. i dont know if ipod allows you to put content on it that you own but didnt get through itunes. for example free or purchased downloaded audio and video files already on your computer. i have a lot of songs and videos on my computer already. if i get an ipod will i be able to put these files on there? (of course converting format if needbe)

i've checked what file types are supported and how to convert other types to work with the ipod. my question is more about what is allowed.
for example i've read about protected content not being playable on the ipod. but i'm guessing that wouldnt include free downloaded files from elsewhere than itunes..?
i mean the files i already have downloaded- audio and video. if they are free and legal, can they be played on ipod?

Probs putting personalized video onto iPOD.

Hi All,
I have a 30gb Video iPOD. The iPOD has a 320X20 screen..okay so far.
I have lots of home movies on my hard drive, and want to put some on my iPOD. Utilizing Final Cut Pro, I have only been sucessful with the pull-down choice of "iPOD 320X240". This format works, and plays on my iPOd no prob.
The tech specs say (pasted below):
"H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats"
and
"MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats".
How do I get the 'mpeg 4 video @ 480x480' ointo a format that iPOD will accept?

Putting .mov files on iPod

Hi, I have a bunch of .mov files, some dating back a few years, and I would like to make them viewable on the iPod video. Currently iTunes tells me they are not in the right format but upon doing research I've discovered that .mov files should be compatible with iPod.
I have also learned that if I have Quicktime 7.0.3 installed on my computer any software with the "Quicktime Export Panel" will have the option to export to iPod. What software has this option? I can't seem to find any information on that.
Any tips, directions, on how to do this is very appreciated.

I have had that problem before. If you can see them in iTunes right click on the .mov file. In the window choose *Convert Selection for iPod*. That should allow them to be used on your iPod.

When i Update it wont put the files onto iPod

hey, when i put all my songs into itunes its fine in the library but when i click update it **** up normally saying 'updating ipod' then it says update is complete there are no songs transfrered into the ipod. please help this is really pising me off!!

Cannot Put Any Files On Ipod After Attemping Update

I tried an update, it stalled for a bit in itunes, then i clicked and it seemed to finish up. Disconnected and all seemed fine but now when i go to plug it in i get this;

I would do that, if it gave me the option. The ipod isn't identified at all. I tried reinstalling itunes, and resetting the ipod no luck. I just bought this 60gb ipod, i'm definatly bummed by this. If anyone knows how i can just wipe it or do something to get it to work please let m eknow.

Sometimes an easy fix for this is to de-authorize the computer in iTunes/Advanced menu, then to re-authorize it. You re-authorize it by playing one of the songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store in iTunes. It should ask you for your Apple ID and password, then the computer will be authorized again. Sync you iPod with iTunes, and those songs should play again.
Another common cause of this is not having the latest version of iTunes (5.0). If you don't, you can get it from here.

It sounds like you are unable to manually put your content back on your iPod Touch.
It seems like you may need to re enable Manually Manage Music now that the device has been updated, and this article should help with that.

Hi, HOW DO YOU PUT ALL MUSIC FROM IPOD BACK ONTO A PREVIOUSLY CRASHED COMPUTER IN WHIHC ALL MUSIC FILES WERE UNABLE TO BE RESTORED.
My computer crashed a few months ago and my IT guys were not able to restore my music files.. at least I can't find them. When I log into Itunes, all of my music and play lists appear but when I click to play a song in Itunes on computer, it says the files can not be found. My Ipod obviously has all of my music but I'd like to add more (without deleting what I've got on there) and to copy back whats on my Ipod back to my computer. If I plug together and my computer sync then I will loose all music... needing detailed instructions please.

if this isn't working, maybe try moving one that you are certain is in the correct format, manually. import it from scratch to your itunes, and then copy it to the ipod.
If i click 'import files' the only files it comes up with are text file. Should it be doing this?' So the only files i can import are written documents :/
If i select 'add files' it dosnt add them to my libary at all.
I tryed what you said, i deleted my movies then loaded one into my libary which i no is in the right format but it still said that it is unable to put into my ipod.

Is there a way to put MIDI files onto your Ipod?

One option is to load the midi file into iTunes (via "add to Library..." menu), and then "Convert Selection to MP3..."
Then you can treat it (the MP3 copy) the same as any other MP3 tune.
At least this works for me, with with MacOS X v.10.4 and iTunes 7.0.2.

How do I put music on my ipod from another person's computer.

I used to have a computer with all my music on my itunes and put it on my ipod. now i no longer have a computer, but still want to put music on my ipod. I have tried numerous times to use another persons computer but it just wants to replace my music with the cd i am trying to put on my ipod. thus replacing my existing library with the cd. can i not put more music on my ipod from a foreign computer what do i do?

It can be done. YOu need to change iPod to manual update first.

Dvds to computer/convert dvd file to ipod?

I would like to take some dvd's and put them on my Ipod. (I've heard of this 'dvd decrypter but I don't think people are supposed to download it anymore or something..)
1)How do I get the dvd 'onto' my computer and saved as a file?
2)Which program is good for transferring this 'saved file' to the Ipod readable format? (I already have ffmpeg program, will this convert the 'saved format' once I have it to Ipod format?)

You can download dvd decrypter here. I use it and it works great. http://www.thenickster.net/DVDDecrypter.exe It is a free program. Like the previous poster, be careful of spammers, there are great freeware programs out there that will decrypt and convert your movies to the correct format. Some of the pay programs are faster, but beware of one Cucosoft, it is the one that has a particularly annoying spammer who uses several different names to promote their porduct. I can't tell you if it works or does not work, but just a personal note, don't like their practices.

Getting files off ipod 30GB Used as storage device

I was shown how to put my files on to my ipod to save them to carry them from one computer to another, but the person who showed me this did not tell me how I could then get my files back off my ipod. Can anyone give me very simple directions on how to do this?

OK, the problem is when i put them on, on the other computer itunes did not show up, my ipod just showed up as a mass storage device, so i just dragged them over there and i saw that there are there so i know they are there. But when i plug it into my other computer it bring my itunes up and it doesn't show me anything but my music files. but when i look to see how much space i have left it shows that there is my stuff on there, but i can not click on it.Does that make sense? So how can i get it to open up like it did on the other computer?

Since you do not mention what happens when you try it is hard to help.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
Everything on the ipod came from your computer in the first place. It should still be there and you should always have a backup copy.
