Putting sensor to sleep
The booklet says the sensor is always "awake" but that if you want to put it to sleep you just press the little button on the back with a pen or something. But how do you know when it's asleep or not? I don't want my battery to run down when not using it.

One other thing I'd like to point out is that you should walk around with the sensor and check to see if it connects to make sure it's fully asleep to be absolutely sure. This is because the sensor does go into the "idle mode" when not in use and it could be in idle mode and not connect when you think you've put it to sleep. Walking around will take it out of idle mode but not take it out of sleep mode. Pressing the sleep button again is the only way to take it out of sleep mode.

Greeting everyone. I recently purchased my first Macbook, my first laptop ever. I've pretty much grown up using a desktop pc. I turn it on when I get home, put it on sleep mode when I leave it to watch tv or what not. If I'm done with it for the day, I turn it off.
Now before everone jumps on me for probably doing the wrong thing please note that I come from a "Turn it off when you're not using it kind of family". Can someone give me some pointers in using my new mac? For example, someone told me that I can actually leave my macbook in sleep mode the entire day even when traveling to and from school/work. Is this safe for my macbook? I apologize if this is such an elementary question.I have found that my machines respond better when I just close the lid (sleep). It is important to understand that the laptop caches everything in memory to the hard drive before it goes to sleep, so you want to make sure you allow the extra time for that to happen (wait until the sleep light starts pulsating) before you move the laptop if you can. Otherwise you're moving the machine while the hard drive is still spinning. I know that the newer laptops typically have a Sudden Motion Sensor that will automatically park the heads under certain conditions, but why tempt fate? Depending on how many applications you have running, and how much RAM you have installed, going into sleep mode can take longer than you might expect. Whether you adapt a sleep or shut down operating preference (I prefer sleep- only shutting down every once in a while for OS installs, restarts due to problems, etc.), it is much more important to follow Apple's guidelines for calibrating the battery. Not only does following these instructions allow the computer to more accurately report the battery charge level, it also runs the lithium ion battery through a complete cycle - something that is needed every once in a while to keep it operating in tip-top shape. I just looked in my history - can't find the link. I was googling for about 15 minutes out of curiousity before.. just researched more though. I think its an integrated circuit (the IC part) that is a combination of both analog and digital die sensor readings:

PB puts itself to sleep when in use
The powerbook will put itslef to sleep with no warning. I will be working as normal on my computer and all of a sudden the computer diplay will go black, and the sleep light will begin to blink. I am not certain if the hardrive also goes to sleep, but im pretty sure it does. Sometimes it will happen as soon as I rewake it, and in most cases this ends in the computer freezing and forcing me to remove the battery and AC adapter to simply restart it.
I have tried reseting the power management unit, removing external devices, and instructing the computer to not sleep at all. It seems to happen at random, for instance, atm, it seems to be working fine, but it could go to sleep at any second.I have had the worst time with my PB for about a month now. It all began when my hard drive crashed. I Replaced the HD.
Reloaded and updated the OS and all software.
Then, after about a week of everything running like it should, I began to have problems brought on by encrypting my data. My PB began to freeze. I spent about - and I'm not exaggerating - 3 1/2 hours on the phone with Apple Care. Finally had to zero out my hard drive and - once again - reload EVERYTHING.
Everthing was fine for about a week and then, out of the blue, my PB would go into sleep mode - while I was typing.
I spent another 2 hours on the phone with Apple Care. Finally had to zero out my hard drive and reload everything - AGAIN!!!!!!!!
Imagine the frustration when - after I reloaded everything which takes at least 3-4 hours (after downloading upgrades and all) within 15 minutes it went back into sleep mode while I was typing!!!
At this point I was just about ready to throw it out the window.
Instead, I brought it to the Genius Bar.
They took it in and replaced the mother board (the error log stated something about a printer error though it wasn't on line with the printer).
I got the PB back the next morning and began to check my email when - guess what happens - yep, it went to sleep while I was typing!!!
Each time it went to sleep I was able to wake it up after about 10 seconds by pressing a key. It would stay on for about 7 - 10 seconds before it would die again. After going through this cycle about 10 times it wouldn't wake up until I removed the battery. When I turned it on this last time I went immediately to the error log to see what was happening and this time it said "excessive temperature".
Okay, so I went back to the Genius bar (amazingly, no blood was shed), and this time they sent it somewhere to be fixed.
I'm waiting for it to come back. Though with all the problems I've been having with it I'm actually quite afraid of getting it back and having this or something else happen.
I've got to say - through all this - the only reason I'm still sane is that everyone that has assisted me, whether on the phone with Apple Care or at the Genius Bar, has been absolutely fantastic! I love those guys! And, I love my PowerBook - I just want it back - the way it was - before all this started happening!
I've been doing a lot of searching regarding this problem and - although Apple techs seem to have never heard of this problem before(???) - it has been happening to A LOT of people that have PowerBook G4's 15" and 17" built during 2005. It has to do with the TrackPad Sensor going haywire and the Topcase must be replaced - perhaps the motherboard as well.

My Ipad dropped dead. I had 89% charge left. Came back an hour later after putting it to sleep and it is totally black...no response to plugging it in...usually there is a sound...when I plugged into my apple computer it doesnot even show up on itunes..no acknowlegement of it...no nothing...Ipad 3..new this last spring...I had an ipad 2 before this...so this is not my first rodeo as they say.Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Or is it just dead?

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode. If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.

Hi guys, new to the forum and very much hoping to get help to the following problem:
I'm experiencing a very unusual problem that I've never encountered before nor read about anywhere on the internet. After installing a clean install of Windows 8 on my Dell Inspirion N5050, startup does get past the Dell logo and onto the Windows loading logo.
However, it won't go further than this. The logo goes away, leaving the screen blank (NOT black) and it won't continue to the logon page or start menu. All lights are burning (meaning it's working somewhere underneath that weird blank screen). And the funny
thing is that when I press the power button (or close the lid) to put it to sleep and then wake it up by pressing again, the logon/start menu is there and Windows is working perfectly.
In short: everything works perfectly, except that I have to put the computer to sleep and wake it back up in order for me to see/get into windows.
Has anyone heard of this problem before? I'm so utterly confused here!

This issue can be caused by failing to load files or drivers.
First, I suggest you to try to boot into Safe mode, and shut down and power on to see if there is the same issue:
Please use these steps to boot into Safe mode:
Windows key + Run -> Type msconfig, and press Enter -> Under Boot tab, check on “Safe boot” -> Click Ok to restart computer.
To disable boot into safe mode automatically, repeat above steps and uncheck the Safe boot option.
If the issue not persists, please try to disable fast startup to make sure all the drivers were load properly and check the results:

Near new mac pro retina, updated OS last night, re-started, finished my work & put it into sleep mode. On power, & hooked up to Thunderbolt screen. Got up this morning and it won't boot up. Is there anything I can do myself, or is this a shop problem?
Sounds like a #1 SMC or #2 PRAM reset is in order.

I have a 2007 Mac Pro and for some reason, it won't go to sleep. Normally if it was idle for an hour or two, it would automatically sleep but not anymore. If I put it to sleep manually, it wakes right back up. I have to shut it down so the hard drives don't spin all night long. I'm not sure what's causing this. I tried unplugging all the USB devices and plugging them back in. It tried resetting PRAM. In my preferences, my computer sleep prefernces remain unchanged from the time that it was functioning correctly. If anyone has a suggestion I would love to hear it.

Take all the steps suggested in this support article.
Step 2
From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
Step 3
▹ System Preferences ▹ Sharing: uncheck all boxes.
Step 4
Reboot and see whether there's any change.
Step 5
Reset the SMC.
Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again. -
My imac turns it self back on almost immediately after putting it to sleep. Why and how do I fix it?
This is new as of a few days ago. I can't find anything in preferences to make it better nor did I change any setting. Not sure what's going on. The computer seems to be working fine except for that.
It's not supposed to do that, so there is no setting for it. Be sure you have shut down (powered off) the Mac and started it back up, if you have not since this problem occurred.
If you are manually putting it to sleep, make sure you are not "bumping" the mouse immediately after giving the Sleep command. Also, does this happen when the Mac goes to sleep due to timed inactivity?

A faulty USB device can cause this behavior. You can try disconnecting all USB devices including hubs, except for standard mouse and keyboard (if used). See if the problem recurs. -
How do I prevent non-admin users from putting Lion to sleep?
I share a MacPro at home with a few others. I use it as a server as well as keep content on it that is streamed to all sorts of devices; they use it as a mac to check e-mail. Two of the users have a really bad habit of putting it to sleep because the display wastes power being on (even though it will dim in 60 seconds and turn off in 3). Despite my best efforts to assure them that putting it to sleep will cause other things to crash once a month they go ahead and try to do it anyway. Suffice it to say they then ask me why the AppleTV has no access to the content stored on the MacPro.
With that in mind I want to know if it is possible to require an administrator password to put the Mac to sleep? 5 of 7 users do not have admin privileges, the other won't put it to sleep. If you know a wayf to prevent it - you would be my hero. If your suggestion is simply prevent them access to the Mac that won't really work - despite my hopes.
Let me know - its a huge pain every time it happens.

Sandy.Hi - you have will have to change the device passwords on all the base stations and then don't give them to anyone except the administrators and tell them not to save them on their computers that use the older versions of the Airport Utility - for the newer versions like the mobile apps, as soon as you enter the pasword it is saved and is visible in the advanced pane along with the network password - so if anyone gets a hold of your iPad or iPhone, they can edit the whole network - I have this same issue with my networks in the office and it is inconvenient but doable - I hope this helps

Computer now wakes up immediately after I put it to sleep!!
I've got a dual G5 running Panther and I put it to sleep when I go to work in the morning. Last night, I wanted to try out Tiger (yes, I know - I'm way behind the times) so I installed it on a FireWire drive and booted off it for a couple of hours to see how things worked. I then went back to my internal Panther drive, and everything is ok except for one thing: when I hit "sleep", it goes to sleep, the screens turn off, and then for some reason I immediately hear the internal drives spin back up and the thing turns on again!! Why can't it stay asleep?!?

Also, I trust that you have reviewed your Energy saving preferences to confirm
that they are set to allow sleep, and not to disturb said sleep?
which ones in particular? I think they're fine but maybe I'm missing something that got munged somehow. Where are the "disturb"-type settings? I've got "wake on LAN access" clicked off for example. What else is there?

MacBook Pro mid 2010 putting itself to sleep and restarting on wake-up?
My mid 2010 MacBook Pro has recently started having a lot of problems. It will put itself to sleep whilst I am working on it, and when I try tp wake it up it restarts showing a message saying 'Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press any key to continue..' however it doesn't tell me what the problem is. This can happen every 5 minutes or once an hour but it is becoming very irritating. I have previously done a PRAM and SMC restart, they made no difference. I can't think of any recent programmes I have installed to cause this problem, other than updating to mountain lion 10.8.5. Im not very computer savvy either, so understanding much of what is online is not easy.

Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair. The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
