Putting the power of Mac Pro to the G4
I've recently upgraded my Intel Mac Pro by removing the two 512k DIMMs and replacing them with two 2g DIMMS, making it 4g.
My non-Intel 1g G4 is now appearing a bit weak and I wondered if I could transfer the two 512k DIMMS that orignally came with the Mac Pro to the G4 to make it a 2g G4.
(I've had a search but cannot find anyone asking this question, so it might be a really BAD idea...so I do apologise.)

Anyone know if they need to be "enabled" somehow?Yes, the adapter does seem to go all the way up to the plastic shell. And the the adapters and displays work fine when driven by either of my MacBook Pros. And there seems to be some sort of connection being made because when the adapter is unplugged, the monitor goes through its typical "I'm unplugged" test mode phases with color screens and so forth, but when I plug it in to the Mac Pro, it goes black.

Nvidia 8800GT video card in the First Generation Mac Pro
This message is a bit of advice if you install the new Nvidia 8800GT video card in the first generation Mac Pro. The advice is keep your old video card. The old video card will be needed if you ever need to reinstall the OS X operating system. This new card needs the video drivers (kernel extensions) that are in OS X leopard 10.5.2 or later. With this video card installed, both the OS X original installation disk that came with this computer and the OS X leopard upgrade disks will cause a kernel panic when booted up. This is because they do not contain the kernel extensions needed for this video card. There is a question. Does anyone know how to create and burn a reinstallation DVD with OS X leopard version 10.5.2 on it? This would help solve this reinstallation problem

My internal hard drive isn't being recognized on my macbook pro but when I put the HD in my Mac Pro (desktop), the desktop computer recognizes the HD. When I insert the installer CD on my laptop, it also doesn't recognize my hard drive. Please help! Thank you!
I've also been getting an image with the folder and question mark. I've tried everything on the apple support page but it doesn't seem to work either.Well, I tried all of your suggestions and they didn't work -- no surprise because I was trying to backup to my external c.d. disk. Duh! The application for the home is in the mail.

I have just recently bought a MacBook Air. I am looking for an email which I put into a folder on my Mac Pro. The smart folders have come across to the Air, but not the 'On my Mac' folders. Are they lost?
Are you sure that the "On My Mac" folders weren't empty? If all your mail accounts are IMAP, they may have been.

I've installed Mavericks on my Mac Pro. It works well, generally, but will not stay asleep! Pressing the power button twice sometimes extends the sleep mode but even that seldom results in a full overnight sleep. File sharing off. What else can help?

Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:

Some System Preferences settings (see below)

Why are there so many problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro ???
Hi everybody out there using Mac Pro's early 2008,
I found out there is a lot of problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro.
My early 2008 Mac Pro has been repaired ones under warranty and now it stopped working again ! Also see under: Mac Pro early 2008 no chime and does not start up. Why is this ????
It worked well for about 2 years and then it just fails and i had this failing issue twice already !!! Is this just a BAD Apple product or how do you think I need to approach this. Let’s face it, these machine don’t come cheap and you at least expect them to work without problems for 4-5 years. What is happening here ???

That is probably an indication that you need to find a new graphics card.

... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
1) Apple brand cards:
• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200

Even when I charge my Mac Pro to the full bar, the battery seems to be drained even when I am not using it. Example, after charging it full, i switched it on the next day and its 79% battery left. Is there something wrong? help please
Assuming you are disconnecting from line power, when you say switched on, do you mean it was shutdown or in sleep mode? If sleep mode the battery will still drain because sleep still keeps some things active and the battery does drain a little. However, to go from 100% to 79% charge overnight is a bit excessive in sleep mode. Unless you have some processes set to activate over night by the cron file and do things like backup the system.
What are the statistics on the battery, the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power...things like battery Condition, Capacity, remaining charge, voltage, current. -

Insufficient RAM memory or too much competition for too few drives causes a system to have unused processor power, but complete the work too slowly. -
I dropped my mac pro. The disc drive plays but will not record. medium drive error. How hard is it to replace the drive my self. i see screws on the bottom. Could I just order a new internal drive and replace it? Or is it too complicated for the average person? Would be cheaper to buy an external drive than to replace internal one? Any advice is appreciated

That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting. On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.

2ghz Mac Pro on the way - 21st August (UK)?

I'm probably the only one but i just ordered a Mac Pro 2ghz with 160gb hard drive stock 7300 video card and Bluetooth. My online account says delivery by the 21st of August (uk) does that tally with other peoples delivery times?
Just hope that the stock card is at least as good as my imacs x1600!
I will eventually replace it with a x1900 but no spare cash at the moment.

I picked up my Mac Pro yesterday from the Apple store in Meadowhall Sheffield UK, The two they received were nearly put out as demonstration models, but luckily they let me take one of them.
I went for the 2.66GHz Dual Mac Pro, with the standard 1 gig of ram and 250gb hd, I had wanted 2gb of ram and two 500gb hds, but they are not sure when they will be getting these in, so I will have to do that in the next couple of weeks...
The total price including the Student discount was £1568.00 including the extended 3 year Apple care and .mac account.. an amazzing price!
Overall, I am well impressed with with this baby! it's soooo quiet and leaves my Dual 1.8 G5 in the dust!!
No more noisy G5 trying to take off!!

How much real world performance difference would there be between the 1600MHz memory of a 4,1 Mac Pro and the 800MHz memory of a 3,1 Mac Pro? My main app is multitrack audio with Pro Tools. Thanks so much. The CPU speed of either one would be between 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz.
What are the differences.... firmware and build, there were tweaks to the PCIe bus itself. As a result 3rd party cards and booting is better.
Support in 5,1 firmware for more 56xx and W35/36xx processors. Also memory timing.
The 4,1 was "64-bit boot mode optional" and 5,1 was default. I don't know if there are changes but I assume so, even if it is not reflected elsewhere or in version number.
I don't know what the prices are but 2009, to buy one today, when the 2010 is $1800.
The 2008 of course was test bed for 64-bit UEFI and it sure seems even Lion and then ML are not as well engineered - outside of Linc who would be the least likely to have a problem.
I would assume 2010 has better support for 8GB and even 16GB DIMMs as well as for 1333MHz.
Nehalem family had only come out in fall 2008 and a lot of work went into making improvements well past 2009.
If you remember, there were serious heat problems with those and 10.5.7+ up thru 10.6.2 even with iTunes, audio, and hyperthreading and cores hitting and staying in 80*C range. That I assume was both poor code (sleep does not mean poke and ask constantly) as well as changes in SMC and kernel improvements, to work around. Microcode can be patched in firmware, kernel, by drivers and by code, but it is best when the chips and core elements don't need to be.
If someone is stretched, and can get 2009 for $1200 it might be a fine fit. That year offered the OEM GT120 which isn't really as nice and matched for today both OS and apps that rely on a GPU. And for odd reasons two such 120's don't work well in Lion+ but that is probably minor. Having the 5770 is just "nicer" though.
There are some articles about trouble booting with PCIe SATA/SAS/SSD and less trouble with 2010. Also support for graphic card and audio I think was one of those "minor" 5770 related support issues. But shows some small changes were made there too.
I wish someone would come out and pre-announce DDR4 + SATA3 along with PCIe 3.x (for bandwidth and more power per rail) along with say Ivy Bridge-E socket processors was going to be this summer's 3 yr anniversary and to replace the 2010 designed motherboard. But that is what is on Intel's and others drawing boards simmeringn in the pot. -
i am having an MacBook Pro 13inch , having an Startup Problem , the time i press the power button after few seconds the apple symbol appears with a loading sign below it and wont go further ahead of it . My data is all in the hard drive .. . I even tried the Internet recovery but no use !!!! but still no respons and the recovery and macintosh hd is now lock! but earlier only the recovery is lock and after both of them is lock. i can reinstall,... and i didnt try to back up any data bec i dont know how? so please help me to resolve my prroblem.?

Sorry, possibly you need a new hard drive or try reformating. First
you can try something like http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/ it has been known to repair disk that DiskUtility could not. YMMV and they don't give it away.
If Disk Warrior can not repair then you need to Reformate the drive. Make sure you have a back-up in place no matter what.

Is there a way to keep my Mac Pro On the network without sleeping???
i'll try to explain this the best way I can. I often wish to access my Mac Pro over the network either for file sharing, or for use with Apple Remote Desktop. The problem is after about 20-30 minutes, the Mac Pro sleeps and disappears from the network. Is there a way to keep it on the network without turnig off sleep mode? I really don't want the hard drives working 24/7 if possible....

I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it. I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home, a MacBook Air for when I'm on the road, all with TB. Can a single external TB drive boot all three hardware configurations successfully? I've been told that differences in hardware configurations between the systems make this impossible. Is this correct?
Piece or peace of cake really though.
A quick install on new hard drive or SSD or 10K and less than an hour to move everything over properly.
YOU looked for a quick fix and found none and all the brick walls.
It is not days of work to do a clean install and migrate.
There are few if any apps that need to be freshly installed either though there are updates needed for them to be compliant, any driver or plugin also and that is done ahead of time with research.
And your backup or clone of your system is taken care of - you leave the old system boot drive 'as is' untouched.
Also, better strategy to move most all your home folder (except for its own ~/Library) to ANOTHER disk drive and not on t he system drive at all.
As for applications on its own drive or 3rd party, beeen there done that, even SSD or 15K SCSI - no benefit in performance or organization.
