Putting to sleep while updating

Right now I'm downloading Mac OS X 10.5.6 update and my question is does putting the computer to sleep affects download? Because previously the computer was asleep for a while and then the package didn't work.

Never put a computer to sleep during an update. You can lose everything.
If you put it to sleep during a download, the download will terminate improperly and may need manual removal from the HD.
You can let the screen sleep, but never the computer, during any operation.

  • Help! Wont start up or charge after being put to sleep mid update

    Please can someone help.
I started downloading the updates for my macbook pro but closed the lid accidentally when it was in the middle. I didnt have time to finish letting it run anyway so left it whilst i went away over the weekend.
Now the battery appears to have died (it has 1 light flashing) and it will not start up. When i plug the magsafe adapter in the light goes green but it will not go to amber to say that it is charging.
    Please can someone help me.

    Try resetting your SMC.

  • HT201343 Is there any way to put your monitor to sleep while you use Airplay?

I've been using Steam as virtually a home game console since I found the ability to pair my iMac with my Apple TV for Airplay. The only problem I have is there seems to be no setting for putting your monitor to sleep while you Airplay to Apple TV. Since both end up in use, I'd rather the monitor be off or I would simply just play off that, although the TV is much bigger!
Also another feature I'm not sure of is Airplaying a program while the computer is still in use. For example, I wish I could Airplay my Steam games to my TV while my girlfriend watched a movie or looked at Facebook at the same time. That would be epic.

I usually use my MBP 13 (mid 2009) in Extended Desktop mode with a Dell 17" external display (and the MBP in Clamshell mode). I have 2 questions:
    1. After putting the MBP into Clamshell (by closing the lid), on waking up the external display the latter has the wrong resolution. I discovered that I can correct this by repeating the action, ie putting it back to sleep and re-waking it. At that point, the external display is at its best (1280 x 1024). But having to do it twice is kind of annoying. How can I avoid that?
    2. Before I got my MBP, I used the same Dell display with an Acer Windows 14" notebook. The resolution on the Dell using the Acer was better than it is with the MBP. I am thinking of getting a new external display to replace the Dell, maybe a 19" or 20". Is there a particular type of display that will produce the best resolution/image with the MBP 13?
    Thanks

  • Computer will randomly sleep while trying to update

I bought this computer used around Christmas and everything seemed fine(even though I had not done many things with this computer) until I was using a downloaded free program off the internet (not wise now, I understand). Using this program my computer would randomly go to sleep. I could quickly wake it back up by hitting the spacebar but this seemed to happen too frequently to be good for the computer. I got rid of the program but have this sleeping problem updating Mac programs or similar things.
The last time I tried updating the computer after I completely reinstalled everything, the computer froze and I turned it off but had a hard time getting it back on. When I have to turn the computer off, turning it back on the fan gets really loud quickly and it shuts the computer right back off. I can eventually get it back on but this is not normal. Reading the discussion boards I heard of resetting the SMU and have already done this but it hasn't seemed to help. I just cannot seem to find out what I need to do. If anyone has a suggestion, please help!!

Welcome to Discussions - it sounds as if your power supply unit is failing. Make sure you back up all your data, I use SuperDuper!. Find the model of your iMac here iMac release dates, and once you determine that, check your serial number and see if you qualify for Apple'sRepair Extension Program or Rev B repair extension.

  • While updating iphone software to 5.0.1, I am getting error message that Iphone cound not be updated because the firmware file is not compatible. Can anyone help me to resolve this issue.

While updating iphone software to 5.0.1, I am getting error that Iphone could not be updated because the firmware file not compatible.
Can anyone help me to resolve this issue.

Using iTunes 10.5.2.11 on a PC running 64 bit Windows 7
First did a full back up of  iphone using iTunes
Put iphone into Recovery Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 ). Erases all user data and settings!
    Disconnected USB cable from iphone
Powered off iphone by holding down Sleep/Off button until slider appeared, slid to off, waited until screen dark
Pressed and kept holding Home button while plugging cable back into phone
I still saw the graphic on the iphone that said to plug into iTunes, so I unplugged and re-plugged cable. (I may have released the Home button too soon)
Recovery Mode alert came up in iTunes.
Followed all iTunes prompts to restore phone - it downloaded and sucessfully installed iOS 5.0.1
iphone did not appear in iTunes due to missing pairing file (that made me nervous)
iphone was now at factory settings. I followed prompts on iphone screen to start reactivation process
Eventually the iphone asked if I wanted to restore from a back-up (whew!)
A window opened in iTunes and I was able to select my previous back-up file for the restore
A full restore from back-up then occured
I also allowed a carrier settings update to occur when prompted (not sure that happens in all cases)
When the restore was done I had to re-enter some passwords, but everything was there
iOS is now 5.0.1 (9A406). The whole process took about an hour.

  • Putting to Sleep vs. Shutting Down

Hi, I have a macbook and I usually never shut it down unless I am doing updates. I am going away for about 10 days so should I shut it down while I am away or put it to sleep like I usually do every day?
Also, I have read somewhere that macs are meant to be put to sleep usually.. not shut down all the time. Is that true? Why?
    Thank you.

Whether you put it to sleep or shut it down is completely up to you. Most people who use Macs generally just put them to sleep. This isn't really just a Mac thing though... you can also just put PCs in standby (vs. shutting them down). If you're going to be away for 10 days, you might as well shut it down. During that time, your battery will completely drain while in sleep and it will just go into safe sleep anyway. You could of course use that as an opportunity to calibrate your battery if you wish.

  • Computer Sleeps While Syncing Photos

    Hi Guys,
    iPhone 3GS current software
    iTunes Current software
    Windows 7 64bit current updates
My computer is set to NEVER sleep regardless of battery power or plugged in.  If I select a folder to sync that is around 400+ images, once I hit the sync button iTunes will begin transferring and converting the images but will ALWAYS cause the computer to sleep while in the middle of the sync... really it seems that something at the end of the sync process is causing this.  It does this regardless if I am activly working on the computer.
If I select a folder with less images this does not happen.
Thanks for any help or ideas
    Cheers

Jake, did you find any solution? I'm having exactly the same problem, though I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.2. I have basically all the same settings as you have. In fact I did try unchecking the "put hard disk to sleep whenever possible" for a while, but didn't help. Still goes to sleep after about 1 hour of otherwise inactivity (i.e only itunes playing).  This has got to be a bug, and seems to be affecting a lot of people.  I'll keep an eye on this topic.
    Thanks.

  • Windows 7 Crashes Computer if put to Sleep

Hi, I am using a late 2006 MacBook in boot camp, and if I put the computer to sleep while doing anything full screen the screen is blank when woken up, and I am forced to press and hold the power button. What can I do to fix this?

    Hi,
first of: Thanks for your tips!
I already changed the power plans under Windows 7 to prevent sleep mode when the MacBook is plugged in. I'll give it a try to disable hibernating in addition to that.
Except for a mouse, no other periphals are attached. So I can exclude this as a possible reason for entering sleep mode while playing games (if you meant that...).
Regarding the issue with Boot Camp, I have to clearify that I didn't try to update it manually. I only tried to upadate it via software update under Windows 7 (that one Boot Camp is installing during the initial Windows setup). But, as I said, it just worked fine after upgrading to OS X Lion, so I'm wondering why the problem occurs weeks later... weird.
Hard disk (and thus the temp-folder) is cleaned on a regular basis using CCleaner, so I can sort that out.
Finally, the MagSafe adapter seems to be fine, since I had no power loss or sudden sleep problems under OS X. But I'll check that, just to be sure.
    Again, thanks for your answer!
    Jerry

  • PB sleeps while working

I have just come through hurricane Wilma, and ever since, my PB puts itself to sleep, while I am working, even though the battery says it is charged. It does it even more so when I have it plugged in to the AC adapter. I say the hurricane because it was charging in my RV which is running on generator. I am also afraid that in the dark, my son grabbed the charger from his ibook and plugged it in to my PB, will that hurt it?
    Thanks,
    Garpoe

    Gary,
This is an example fo my console logs!.
Nov 8 20:22:36 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
    Nov 8 20:46:26 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: System Sleep
    Nov 8 20:46:26 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: System Wake
    Nov 8 20:46:26 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: Wake event 0800
But yesterday thought that i would reinstall the 10.4.3 update from Mac manually rather than on automatic download, I think that has managed to solve my problem as not getting the overtemp signal in my logs anymore and also doesn't seem to be shutting down as much.
Have you tried updating the system?

Is that possible there was the field ZDATE in your form interface/ context and now it is not? I guess some source has changed so the field in the form (binding to the not existing field) cannot be processed. Otto

  • Data back up taken in 2.1 is lost while updating to 2.3

It is compulsory to lose backup while upgrading from 2.1 to 2.3. Its really big big disappointing feature of the update. No care is taken by even google to restore sbf type back up by putting support software in market.
I want to restore some of important sms back up. I need help from Sony Ericsson. I am sure that so many people have lost their back up while updating to 2.3.
It is compulsory to put such a notice display while updating to 2.3 that you will loose the back up and will not be able to restore back of 2.1 in 2.3. I want to file a case against the company for the valuable data loss and for not to inform such an important data lose.

Hi, download the following apk file from link provided and install it to your phone, http://www.elita-clan.com/downloads/backup_and_restore_v010935.apk.
Download it to PC/Laptop, then transfer it to phone SD Card. Make sure you have a File Manager app to search and install the apk file.

  • Kextcache error while updating /Volumes/Seagate CCC

Hi, my external seagate drive (2Tb partitioned into 2 * 1Tb's I've been using for Carbon Copy Cloner has a problem with kextcache, I will not pretend to know what kextcache is but the errors I am getting relate to an invalid signature, it tries 26 times before giving up.
I expect this explains why the drive is not bootable, any suggestioins as to how to fix the problem, can it be fixed?

    Hi,
interesting: I have the same issue, however, I don't have any software from Freecom installed.
Here is my situation, which - to me - is quite bizarre.
Some weeks ago, I installed an SSD as the boot disk, moving my "old" HDD to the Superdrive bay.
This worked quite well. I then upgraded to Mavericks (from ML).
It's tough to say for certain, but my impression is that since I upgraded, things have gone quite awry.
I'm seeing these Error 107 messages from kextcache as well, repeating over and over periodically. What is very odd is this: the cache is trying to update on the HDD! I checked; there is a Library and a System directory in the HHD's root.
I figured I had forgotten to clear those out when I changed the HDD to be a data-only drive, and that Mavericks was using the System directory on the HDD because - well - it was there. So I deleted both the Library and System directories and rebooted.
This fixed Pathfinder's lockup error (after updating), but - much to my surprise - the System directory is back!
All it contains is a Library directory and that only has a Caches directory in it, which - no surprise - contains the com.apple.kext.caches directory. This subtree belongs to root with group wheel, so that should be ok.
    So:
    1) why on earth is Mavericks putting this directory on the HDD, and not on the SSD which contains the "real" system directory?
    2) why am I getting 107 errors?
Here is the relevant part of my log:
Apparently, I'm not the only one, I just found this discussion on what seems to be a similar subject:

    Thanks!

while updating my iphone software it got intruppted and now showing connect to itune not getting restored please help

    Try doing a hard reset on the phone;
    1. Hold Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time;
    2. Wait for the Apple logo to appear (ignore the slide to Power Off option)
    3. Let go of the buttons when you see Apple on the screen
    4. Allow iPhone to reboot;
If you are still unable to get the phone to power on, charge, or connect to iTunes; it could possibly require service. (hardware replacement)
