Putting two old ipods on a new library?

Okay so I've had a lot of computer problems in the past that have caused me to clear everything from it in order to keep it working, thus I've had to redo the whole itunes process over and over. Now I have moved my itunes library to a new computer and managed to sync my old ipod to it, but I'm having trouble syncing my moms old ipod to it. Itunes won't pick up her ipod when I plug it in. Maybe it's the new version of itunes that I'm not used to, but before when I had to do this, itunes picked up when I plugged an unfamiliar ipod in. Of course in order to work then, it required the ipod to be cleared of past songs on it and import the library songs all over. Hope this makes sense and someone can help thanks!

Hi Carrie,
Probably the easiest way to do it is to use something like this:
http://copypod.net/index.php
Just make sure your iPod contains everything from the old computer. Another way would be to burn CDs or DVDs of your library from iTunes on the old computer, then import them on the new computer. This method won't get your playlists though. To get this, you'll also have to backup the files mentioned in this article:

Good luck!

  • How do I put an old iPod on a new computer

Hi, I've just got a new PC and I want to put my iPod, along with the iPod's of all my family on it too. However, none of us want to lose any of the songs we currently have on our iPod's. How can we use the iPod with the new computer with the iPod being able to transfer it's info?
Sorry if the question sounds confusing.

One thing. Yamipod doesn't appear to work with iTunes version 7 or later although there is a beta (untested) version.
If you have this version of iTunes, Copy Pod is a good alternative which does appear to work.
If you have an earlier version of iTunes, first you need to close it. Yamipod won't work with iTunes open.
Then connect the iPod and follow the instructions here.
    There's another method listed here.
    Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), then Copy Pod or Yamipod is your answer.

(After my old laptop blew, it won't turn on anymore). I've invested quite a bit of money into my music, and it'd be a bummer if it's all gone to waste.
    Thanks in advance!

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How do I sync my old ipod to my "new" iTunes library without losing the music I already have loaded onto my iPod?

Hi, so I got my new computer loaded up with iTunes and I want to be able to move my music from my old iPod to my new iTunes library without losing any of the music I already have placed on the iPod. How would I do this? And please I'm not too savvy with the new iTunes layout and such so if you could make this easy in layman's terms that would be great.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you purchased all songs in the iTunes Store, plug your iPod to your Mac or PC and iTunes will ask you to transfer purchases.
If you didn't purchase any song or you have non-purchased songs from the iTunes Store, you have to use an application to transfer the songs to iTunes. Here is a list of applications you can use for that > https://discussions.apple.com/message/11319208#11319208

  • Old Library Was Erased Can I Transfer Hp_Admin's iPod Songs To New Library?

I recently bought a new computer and I forgot to save my itunes songs.I reinstalled my itunes and I still have all my old songs under HP_Administrator’s iPod, I was wondering if there is any way to transfer those songs in my HP_Administrator’s iPod to my new library so I don't have to download all of my songs over again....Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

I am not absolutely sure I have understood you. But if you are asking how to transfer music from an iPod to your PC, it can be done as follows:
    Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61148
If you have an iPod with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to copy your purchases to other authorized computers.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/7.3/en/2586win.html
However this is not allowed for other music.
This MacMuse tip tells you how to copy music from your iPod using Windows Explorer, but it is a bit fiddly:
    http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=797432
Otherwise you can use third party software to manage the transfer, there are a variety of programs out there, some free and some that will copy ratings and counts as well as the music files. Here is a selection, check them out and see what suits you.

  • In trying to sync my old iPod to my new computer, it says that I cannot sync because it belongs to anther library.  How do I find that old library for my new computer?

I have a new computer.  It has been several years since I have downloaded any songs to my iPod.  My old computer crashed so I could not get the info off of it.  Now that I try to sync this iPod to my new computer, it states that it cannot because it belongs to another Library.  How do I find that Library.  I have resigned into iTunes, found my old account, and it still does not sync.
    Any Ideas"
    Thanks

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the new PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.

Sync transfer is one way, matching the device content to the content on the computer, except purchased content as mentioned above.  For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you have to use third party commercial software. In general do not regard your i-device as a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining a backup of your media on a computer backup.
