Putting two OSX's on the one drive...

I have just bought a macbook pro and still have my Powermac G5 and am now straddling the intel/powerpc fence.
I have an external firewire drive that I use as a diagnostics drive on which I have installed OSX and a couple of troubleshooting apps (diskwarrior and techtool pro primarily).
Now I think I'm going to need both intel and powermac installs of the OSX... What I'm wondering is.. can I do it without partitioning the drive?
Chris

Apparently, even though Apple doesn't say it is supported, Intel Macs can boot from an Apple Partition Map (APM) partition scheme. (This was discovered when some folks noticed Intel iMac DVD disks used the APM scheme.) PPC Macs cannot boot from a Partition Table (GPT) partition scheme. Some people have had success exploiting this 'dual boot' nature of Intel Macs to make a universal boot FireWire drive using the APM scheme.
This usually involves repartitioning the drive with two OS versions (Intel & PPC), each on its own partition. (Some ambitious souls have managed to make "universal" OS versions that avoid the two partition requirement, but this has some undesirable consequences, so avoid it if you can.)
The general idea is straightforward:
1. Use Disk Utility's "Partition" tab to format the Firewire drive in the APM scheme, creating two HFS+ partitions (the drive will be completely erased).
2. Boot from a PPC Mac & install 10.4.x on one partition, using a PPC install disk.
3. Reboot from an Intel Mac & install 10.4.x on the other partition, using an Intel install disk.
The "extraordinary measures" come in at step 3, because the Intel installer won't let you install the Intel version of the OS on an APM scheme drive. The workaround is to restore the Intel OS version to the partition using Disk Utility's "Restore" tab. Probably the best way to do this is to install a fresh copy of the OS to an internal partition of an Intel Mac (or to any GPT partition), make a disk image of it, & use that image as the restore source.
In theory, you should be able to use cloning software to copy your working Intel install to the second partition, but this doesn't seem to be an approach anybody has discussed much.
However you do it, you will have to select the correct version of the OS at startup (using the Option key, for instance) for each mac. If you try to start up an Intel Mac with the PPC version of the OS or visa versa, the Mac will crash. This doesn't harm anything (or so they say), but to keep things simple, name each volume with something distinctive (like "PPC Boot" & "Intel Boot"), since your startup choices won't necessarily tell you which is which.
Note that I haven't personally tried this, only read about it (since I will someday want the same capability). Mention of the technique first appeared about a year ago but I have seen nothing since to suggest it still isn't viable. To be on the safe side, check your Intel DVD disks to see if they are APM, which should be a good indication that your Intel Mac will boot from the hybrid FireWire drive. (In Disk Utility, select it & its partition scheme will be shown at the bottom of the window.)
You can read more about this technique at (for example) rentzsch.com: Intel-based Mac Boot Incompatibility or Macs on Intel: Boot Issues. An interesting variation on the universal OS approach can be found at macosxhints.com - 10.4: Create a single Universal binary bootable disk.

  • Can you put 2 itunes account on the one ipod classic?

Would like to know if i could put two itunes account to the one classic as i canoot seem to be able to combine both itues accounts.

This can happen if the library has been corrupted and rebuilt, in which case you should restore the original library in the manner of Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.
Alternatively see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. If you have all the media in your library already then backup the device, and immediately restore it.

  • How to put two mono tracks into the usual stereo view in Edit view of Audition 3 ?

    Hi guys,
Previously I have had no issues simply using Adobe Audition 3 for simple stereo recording and editing of a stereo feed taken from a mixer... well nearly no issues....  :-)
Today, I'm having a bad day or else it's because I'm getting used to being retired.. :-)  ......
Query :    How do I put two mono tracks into the usual stereo view in Edit view so they both display correctly there?
Put simply I have two mono wav files. Let's call them Left_wav and Right_wav.
I cannot seem to get them imported into a new clean Edit view (Normal stereo track layout) so that Left_wav is on the top half and Right_wav is on the bottom half.
Whenever I try, I just get either Left_wav or Right_wav taking up the whole of the edit view. i.e. it just shows one track.
Can anyone familiar with Audition 3 kindly help? I'd appreciate a simple step by step... I just can't see where I've been going wrong, and it's driving me bananas :-).
    Thanks

There are various ways to do this in Audition 3. here's one.
Open both mono files separately in Edit view. Then convert Left_wav to Stereo by going to Edit/Convert Sample Type and under Channels select Stereo with Left Mix at 100% and Right Mix at 0%. This will give you a new stereo file with Left_wav on the top channel. Next go to the Right_wav and copy to the clipboard using Edit/Copy. Return to your new stereo file and enable Edit Right channel only in Edit/Edit Channel/Edit Right Channel. Then make sure that the cursor is at start of the stereo file and Paste Right_wav into the bottom channel of the new stereo file. Finally Save As.

    yes.
What is the best way to do it so the two libraries are not connected?
give them distinct names. launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder of the desired library.
FWIW, there are 3rd party apps that help with managing multiple libraries, notably:
    PowerTunes
    iTunes Library Manager

  • Using the one drive ap in PC

I have downloaded the One Drive ap from the iTunes ap store, but now where do I find it on my PC?

The OneDrive apps available from the iTunes Store are for iPads and iPhones - not Windows.  If you have Windows 8.1 or subscribe to Office 365 then you should already have OneDrive; otherwise if you have Windows Vista with SP2, 7 or 8 you need to download the OneDrive client from here: https://onedrive.live.com/about/en/download/.  OneDrive is not available for Windows XP.

  • Possible to put two or more 3.5 SATA drives in optical bay of early 2008 mac pro?

Hello! A question about expansion really. Here is my iexpansion plan. Wondering if you can see any possible problems?
drive bay 1 - SSD - raid with drive 2
drive bay 2 - SSD - raid with drive 1
These will make the boot drive.
    Then...
    drive bay 3 - 3.5" sata - raid with drive 4
    drive bay 4 - 3.5" sata - raid with drive 3
Two extra internal eSATA ports being extended out with wires to an empty PCI slot, leading to two external 3.5" drives in eSATA interfaced, self-powered enclosures.
Optical Bay - Removing the two currently installed optical drives and replacing with two 3.5" SATA drives. In order to do this I'll need to get some form of ATAPI to SATA adapter as my early 2008 macpro uses the older interface.
    So my question is:
Can you see any reason why this would not work and if you can point me towards an adapter that might work for holding/converting the interface of those two 3.5" drives in the optical bay? Will there be enough space for the adapter? I'll probably rig my own bracket for holding the drives there but any suggestions welcome!
Will power become an issue? I'm also running a flashed PC graphics card which uses both of the additional power  ports (rather than just one). But other than that nothing extra.
    Many thanks for your time!

    Hi Hatter,
Thanks for your reply. I'm not so worried about the SSDs as I am about the ability to put 2x3.5" SATA drives into the optical bay and have them fit (I do not want to pay a lot of money for any fancy pieces of metal such as the one you linked) when they necessary PATA-SATA adapter and power supply adapter if attached to them. Have you ever seen someone do this and what adatper did they use? I'm looking at this sort of thing:
    http://www.cooldrives.com/satoidecofor.html
I can not put the SSDs in the Optical bay because the slower PATA interface would cut the speed so much it would not be worth it.
Any tips on known reports of 2x 3.5" drives fitting in there would be great, and what adapter was used.
    Thanks!

  • Can there be two itunes librarys on the one computer?

I am giving my PC to my parents and we will share it for a few months until I get myself a laptop. Both my mother and I have ipods and we both have separate itunes libraries. Is it possible to have both the separate libraries on the one computer - I guess under our separate user names and it not interfere with each others library? Will opening itunes under our separate usernames bring up the correct libaray?
    Thanks

Yes you can have more than one library. The simplest thing is to have two separate user accounts then things are kept entirely separate:

  • How to put a recovery partition on the hard drive

How can I create a recovery partition on the hard drive of my laptop. I had to reinstall the whole system, and tried to use the HP recovery software they sent me but it quit when it was about three quarters the way finished. I had to use a copy of windows 8 to put the system back on my laptop. After I got it all straighten out, I updated it to windows 8.1 and it seems like the computer runs a lot faster with windows 8.1 on it. Now I need to find away to install a recovery partition on my hard drive.
    Thank You

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of the computer or inside the battery compartment. Please do not include the serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and/or post it here for our review.
A Recover partition is something the factory places on the computer. It is an image of the factory installation and the software required to restore the computer to a factory like state using that image. You will not be able to create a Recovery partition on your computer unless you use the HP Recovery Discs to return the computer to a factory like state. Please note the HP Recovery Discs and the resulting HP Recovery partition will only contain an image of Windows 8 that cannot be updated to reflect the installation of Window 8.1.
My suggestion is to use the Windows "System Image Backup" utility to create an exact image of the Windows 8.1 partition as it currently is. If your computer developes an issue or you need to replace the hard drive, all you have to do is "restore" the image to the computer. You will need to use an external USB hard drive or other media to store the image. Please see Windows 8.1 Tip: Use System Image Backup for instructions on creating and storing a "Windows - System Image Backup."

I have two different accounts for music on iTunes .is there anyway I can combine them without having to cancel one for 90days ? Or put them on one Icloud

    1. Give her a separate user account on your computer. If you have a backup copy of the library, you can restore it.
    2. If you encounter a 90-day waiting period, click here and ask the iTunes Store staff if they'll remove it.

  • Can't put two 5508 WLCs in the same RF group

    Hi experts,
I have two 5508 WLCs and I want them to be backup to each other. I put in the same "RF Group Name" and even the same "Default Mobility Domain Name" however under Wireless -> 802.11b/g/n -> RRM -> RF Grouping each controller still only have themselves as the only memter to the group.
Two controllers are having management IPs on the same subnet 192.168.161.x/24. AP-manager interfaces are in the same network as well. They can ping each other fine. The following screen shots show the current relavent config on the controller:
I do have two controllers in the same mobility group and they are both showing up...
Does anyone know why they can't add each other to the RF group? All other settings are pretty much default...
    Thanks!

    Hi,
is there a chance that one of the 2 WLC doesn't contain any access point ? Or that the APs from one WLC are not physically close to the APs of the second WLC ?
The point of RF grouping is to exchange RF information, to make RRM decisions together and to know what ap is a rogue and which is not. RF group information travels over the air from AP to AP.
So if a wlc has no ap of if its APs are not close to those of the other WLC there is both no point in grouping with the other WLC in rf group and also no technical way of doing so.
    Regards,
    Nicolas

  • How can I put two icloud accounts in the same pc?

Hallo, I have two icloud accounts, one for me and another for my wife, and I would like to put the two accounts in the same pc, because I want to share all the photos of the two accounts with the pc automatically, but I do not know how to do this. The icloud panel only let me to put one account, and if I want to put another account I have to put out before the first account.

I found some clues last week in these linkes.

Which has the contents like the below:
    Example:
Assume you are running on Microsoft Windows with Microsoft Internet Explorer, have first installed version 1.4.2, then version 5.0, and you want to run 1.4.2.
Go to the j2re1.4.2\bin directory where JRE 1.4.2 was installed. On a Windows default installation, this would be here: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\bin
Double-click the jpicpl32.exe file located there. It will launch the control panel for 1.4.2.
Select the Browser tab. Microsoft Internet Explorer might still appear to be set (checked). However, when 5.0 was installed, the registration of the 1.4.2 JRE with Internet Explorer was overwritten by the 5.0 JRE.
If Microsoft Internet Explorer is shown as checked, uncheck it and click Apply. You will see a confirmation dialog stating that browser settings have changed.
Check Microsoft Internet Explorer and click Apply. You should see a confirmation dialog.
Restart the browser. It should now use the 1.4.2 JRE for conventional APPLET tags.
I tried the method of change the control panel but they did not work either.
    Any other helps?
    Thanks in advantage.

  • Is it possible to create two Boot Camp volumes on one drive?

Recently, my MacBook Pro (mid-2009) was running out of space. I have a 500GB internal drive, with a 120GB boot camp partition. I opted to install a new 480GB  SDD in the optical bay, move the Mac OS and files to the SDD and leave the Boot Camp partition on the old HDD. Now I wonder, is it possible to split the HDD into two or even three partitions and have TWO of them run as Boot Camp drives for Windows?
The reason is this: I have a work Windows drive and a development windows drive. I am running Parallels, but with our business systems, and the developmnt aspect, I need to boot both into native Windows if possible. I'd rather NOT use up SDD space for a Windows machine, since it's already smaller (and I like the faster speed on the Mac side anyway).
