Puzzled and clueless

Hey everyone,
Ok, so I started having some issues last week with Kernel panics on Start up, on this thread here. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1161960&tstart=0
I've tried almost every possible trouble shooting tip I could find with no solution. However, I now could boot in safe mode and opened up disk utility and found my hard drive is defective...could be why the kernel panics. I would get this error.
++Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”++
++Checking HFS Plus volume.++
++Checking Extents Overflow file.++
++Checking Catalog file.++
++Invalid sibling link++
++The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.++
++Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit++
++1 HFS volume checked++
++ Volume needs repair++
Disk utility couldn't fix it and I don't have disk warrior or techtools but tried all the fsck solutions to no avail.
So I thought of erasing everything on the HD by re-installing OSX, but everytime I do I have to restart. Upon the restart the kernel panic will show up again.
Is there anyway to install without having to restart? I've tried booting from the disc...still get the kernel panic.
I noticed though that when I reset the PRAM the computer starts up fine, but a regular start up will lead to the kernel panics. If I boot in safe mode and run from the CD, same thing happens
I'm convinced the HD probably needs to be swapped, I tested the RAM and it's all o.k.
Can anyone make sens of this and have any possible solutions?

Hey Thomas,
Thanks for the tips.... unfortunately I'm still getting the kernel panics. I tried unplugging the hard drive, still the same, but the volume still needs to be repaired. Tried booting from the disc as you suggested by holding down C, still the same. I do recall last week though that on occasion I would get 3 beeps followed by 3 flashes on the LED wich led me to believe it was faulty RAM. I tested each one and they were o.k. I even tried using Rember to test the RAM and all passed. From what I troubleshooted, I think it may be the logic board which was already replaced about a year ago...ouch!
My main issue right now is getting kernel panics on start up, but again I can start up normally by zapping the PRAM.
I've got alot of software installed so I'm going to try to uninstall them and see if it helps.
Any other input or advice would be appreciated.

    The old rule of thumb was to keep 10-12 GB free. Any lower than that and you will start to have trouble. I was very close to that for a long time and never had any complaints. Now, Lion "encourages" 20% free space (on my newer 250 GB drive) so I try to keep it with more than 50 GB free.
    Do you still have the original memory in that machine too? The metal plate you have to remove in the battery compartment also provides access to the RAM. Your machine will take 2 GB of RAM, possibly 3. You definitely want to max that out too.
    Regardless, you definitely need a new hard drive. When Apple switched to PC components, they had to take a quality hit. These 2.5" notebook hard drives are not very reliable. I'm surprised your hard drive hasn't died by now. I usually get a new hard drive with every major OS upgrade. A $ 50 investment every couple of years is no big deal.
    Unfortunately, you (and I) suffer from being an early adopter in 2006. Those 32-bit machines only accept 2 GB RAM (maybe 3) and are only 32-bit so they can't be upgraded to Lion. Because of this limitation, you won't see as dramatic an improvement as you would with a 2007 machine. If you run more than a couple of applications, your hard drive is always going to have to be doing some VM work. My 2006 machine has even lost its bluetooth. I gave it to my brother. My very similar 2007 Macbook is still running great.
    So, you must get a new hard drive because your old one is likely on death's door. If you don't have at least 2 GB - get it. If you can't afford a new machine, you might want to consider an SSD. That might help mitigate your RAM limitations. You can spend from $ 100 to $ 350 and get a dramatic speed improvement.

  • Puzzled and desperate

    hi after having my ipod for months and filling my library with songs to help me pass long days my pc died. So got new laptop and want to put songs from ipod onto laptop. Its windows vista and I want to transfer purchases and songs burned from discs I have in my collection.Any help please let me know Thanks

    Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
    Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
    TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

    iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
    There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
    Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a

  • New and clueless BB Tour user

    Hi everyone,
    Forgive me for sounded dumb, but I'm new to the BB Tour.  I've read about all the ringtone issues, which I'm also having.  It doesn't seem like anyone has the answer to correct the problem for good.
    My question is BB apps.  Do I download them from my phone or on the computer?  And, do they drain the battery even more?  Are the apps a one time fee or do they charge monthly?  Any recommendations on favorite apps to download?
    Thanks for any and all help and recommendations
    Carey

    I know it's kind of late to reply to the thread, but if you go to Email Setup, and edit the Gmail account you're using, at the bottom of the page, there's a checkbox "Synchronize deleted items between this mailbox and my device."   I use it and it works like a charm.  I do not use the Enhanced Gmail Plug-In provided by Blackberry - it still doesn't support two-way synch well.
    An issue that I'm having is if I send an email to my own Gmail address (send/receive in same account), the Blackberry doesn't pick up the email, but the GMail web client and Outlook both show it.  Any ideas?
    Thanks-

  • 4 MONTHS W/O SERVICE! Empty promises, failed infrastructure and clueless cust. service!

    It all started in March when I got our landline service restored for a remote job.  Things were fine until the end of May, where the line all of a sudden took on a horrible loud humming/buzzing noise.  A about 10 days later, we scheduled for a technician to come out and look at it, and they "fixed" the issue.  The line was crystal clear until a thunderstorm that hit a week later.  The buzzing came back with a vengeance and wasn't connecting properly.
    At first, we couldn't get any information but through automated messages were informed that this was an "area-wide" meltdown of some sort and that it was being repaired.  We knew that to be true because many of our neighbors were without service too - including some elderly without cell phones.
    Numerous calls to customer service (half of which were directed to someone in the Philippines that had no insight on a LOCAL issue) resulted in us being given a date in between 5-15 days in the future when we should expect repairs to be done.
    End of June passes, nothing.
    July passes with at least 4 different dates promised for repair, nothing.
    August passes with another 6 dates promised, nothing.  Just months of checking my phone line on the date and times I was told to be disappointed and frustrated.
    Meanwhile, I've had to switch to working with my cell phone which isn't nearly as compatible with the call forwarding console for my job and so I've had many issues that have COST ME MONEY!
    It is only in the past two weeks when I spoke to someone who actually decided to do something for me and get some answers from a supervisor and an area foreman since even though there was this massive blowout taking place for THREE WHOLE MONTHS, there were NO NOTES given as to what was going on and nobody could give me any information but just empty apologies and NEW DATES THAT WOULD PASS WITHOUT A WORKING PHONE!
    I finally had someone come to my door right before labor day and promise everything would be repaired on the following Tuesday, which of course DIDN'T HAPPEN (9/3!!!!!!)
    Another futile call to customer service had me listen to an empty promise of things working by September 9th.
    But the funniest thing is that all of that isn't the ultimate reason that I'm fed up.
    I had a surprise visit by two technicians early this week that came to "fix" my phone service.  I sighed in relief hoping that my ordeal was over.
    NOPE.
    Why?  Because the same RIDICULOUS BUZZING that I experienced in MAY came back with a vengeance and made the phone line unusable.   It was so bad that one of the technicians said that the line "sounded like garbage".  So I was told that the whole line in the area was corroded and received another apology for failing to meet my expectations.  When I asked how long it would take to be rectified, I was given this answer.
    "Probably MONTHS"
    MONTHS!!?!?!
    ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
    I WAITED PATIENTLY FOUR WHOLE MONTHS TO BE TOLD TO WAIT EVEN MORE MONTHS FOR A DECENT TELEPHONE LINE?
    WHY WASN'T THIS CORROSION ISSUE ADDRESSED BEFORE?
    FURTHERMORE, I AM LIVID BECAUSE UNFORTUNATELY, VERIZON IS MY ONLY OPTION FOR MY LANDLINE SERVICE IN THIS AREA.  IF I HAD ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVE (and for the record, VoIP has the same issues as cells so that's a moot point), I WOULD HAVE LEFT A LONG TIME AGO THAN TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS INEPTITUDE AND FOOLISHNESS.  I RESENT BEING PIGEONHOLED IN SUCH A SITUATION AND TO REITERATE, YOU'VE COST ME MONEY.  SORRY DOESN'T PAY MY BILLS AND THE "CREDITS" I HAVE ARE NOWHERE NEAR THE POTENTIAL MONEY I'VE LOST, SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH VERIZON!

    Hi Intrigue,
    Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you. Please go to your profile page for the forum and look at the top of the middle column where you will find an area titled "My Support Cases". You can reach your profile page by clicking on your name beside your post, or at the top left of this page underneath the title of the board.
    Under "My Support Cases" you will find a link to the private board where you and the agent may exchange information. This should be checked on a frequent basis, as the agent may be waiting for information from you before they can proceed with any actions. Please keep all correspondence regarding your issue in the private support portal.

  • A favorite program suddenly won't load and I get the following message: Error reading crossword file. Check/daily-crossword/puzzles/2011-06/dc1-2011.bin is up

    The program was loading ok until a power outage 2 days ago. Since restarting the pc the crossword puzzle won't load and I get the message provided.

    I've had this problem since June 1 and no reply was received from Thinks when I wrote to them about it. In my case, it applies to the crossword puzzle and also to the codebreaker.

  • Shockwave Player 12.0 and Jigsaw Puzzles

    AS verified by Adobe and installed in my programs Dec. 12, 2013, which is the latest version. I upgraded from SW 10 due to security issues that were brought to my attention by US-Cert. Not going into detail about that notification; here's what my problem is. When I go to a site that has jigsaw puzzles and click on the site, I get a prompt to download SW 10 which as stated is an older version. Why aren't these sites made aware that there is a newer and safer version of Adobe Shockwave so we don't have the inconvenience of being shut out? I have no other problems with sites such as crosswords, sudoku, etc...And I won't open SW10 just for one game only then uninstall because as mentioned there have been security issues on that site.

    Thanks for your reply Sean. However, I did notify the site developer via email and only response I got was tincture of time and scientific neglect. Maybe I'm the only user of their game site. Thanks again.

  • I brought an album from the iTunes Store, edited it, and put it onto my iPhone, but the only thing is, is that the featuring artists on the song are not showing, only the album artist, ive tried wipping my phone but no changes still, help me please

    Basically I brought a album of the iTunes Store, Depzman - 2 Real, specifically, edited the album features, such as, artists and put the featuring artists, which before I edited it was placed in brackets at the end of the song title like most iTunes songs, but when i put it on my iPhone which is on manually handle music and videos, the artist which i removed from the song title do not appear, only the album artists, I have reset my iPhone completely using the delete all settings and content in the hope of it being the iPhones fault and it has not changed, urgh, what a waste of time / effort, now I have now gotten to the point of fed up cos I feel like I've tried everything, ive re-downloded them and done it all again, still nothing, so now I'm puzzled and don't understand why it wont appear the same on my iPhone as it does in my iTunes library, please can someone help me solve this pain in the ***, I'm OCD when it comes to music and if it doesn't appear the way it should i get annoyed / frustrated -.-

  • How do I set up multiple e-mail and iCloud accounts on an iPad?

    Hello everyone,
    I have just purchased an iPhone and an iPad, and have upgraded to Mavericks - and that was only a week ago, so the workings of the cloud are not overly familiar with me yet.
    I have just discovered to my dismay that unlike my iMac and Macbook, the iPad does not support accounts - or multiple users - in the Mac sense, although looking at the manual and the forums I believe it might be possible to do things another way, but all the postees have more experience of the devices and the cloud than I do.
    What am I trying to get the iPad to do?
    My use is fairly mixed, but mostly web browsing and music and some Apple TV. I do not have my regular e-mail address joined to the cloud, and don’t want to, as nearly all my e-mails are work based, and I don’t want those on a private device. My new iCloud e-mail address will do for friends at some point.
    My wife surfs the web, uses e-mail, and Facebook. She would like all her content private, so I would expect some sort of password usage, or signing in and out of iCloud, or at least certain aspects of it like Mail. I’m not bothered about mine being kept private, and I expect my usage to be light. She does not have an Apple id or iTunes account.
    I know you can put more than one e-mail address on there, and the menu on the iPad suggests I can add more than iCloud account?
    Unfortunately, this is all a bit of a jigsaw puzzle and I feel I’m missing a few pieces.
    Can some kind soul tell me if what I want to achieve is possible, and if it is, I would really appreciate an idiot’s guide on how to achieve this.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Now I feel kind of stupid, or maybe I need new glasses. I did not see the get an new account link, just kept going back into my primary account. Thank you for your time and help.

  • Word Puzzle still not working

    I have written the code to take a text file (from a command line argument) holding the information for the word find grid and also the file holding the words to be found in the grid. The whole find the two files and drop them into memory works all peachy keen but the rest of the program doesn't work for some oddball reason that I can't figure out (and the TAs are useless as usual). I dropped in print statements all over the world to see why it's not working but all I can see is that I hit the method SolvePuzzle and don't actually get any further than the print statement.
    Just so you know, all of the methods in the program do work as I wrote them for another version of the same puzzle...it was just that I had to change the program to run with command line arguments instead of asking the user to input the file names. Please, can someone take a look at this monstrous mess and tell me how on earth I get the stupid thing to output correctly?

    Your problem is the duplicate declarations of rows/columns
    class fields
    private int rows, columns;
    and in loadPuzzle()
    int columns = oneLine.length( );//remove int
    int rows = puzzleLines.size( );//ditto
    the 'int' makes rows/columns local to loadPuzzle(), leaving the class fields rows/colums = 0
    the for loops of solvePuzzle() are not executed because rows = 0
    also, in loadPuzzle() you seem to have an extra readLine() at the top. This could be by design, but you will lose the first line
    // get the row and columns
    oneLine = wsFile.readLine();//<--------------
    List puzzleLines = new ArrayList( );

  • Puzzler - Is there a way to detect when an external headphone or speaker is plugged in?

    I have a puzzler, and my initial question is simply, is there a way to see via Windows if/when an external headphone or microphone is plugged in, or is that all an electrical circuit independent of the OS?
    Background: (not necessarily the question I'm asking, but providing anyway):
    The background is this:  Dozens, Hundreds, I think Thousands of owners of Toshiba Satellite owners with Conexant sound devices (including myself) the world over have this problem where the sound stops working about 1 to 2 minutes into playing non-stop
    sounds/music/videos.  In spite of all the experts telling these poor people to run a system restore and wipe out the past years of files and everything on their computer, the problem prevails no matter what.  Some have even installed Linux, and the
    problem persists. To me, it seems that the problem doesn't occur if the only sounds are the occasional bing or bong from a system warning, it seems to fail after 1 to 2 minutes of continuous play (but this particular observation is mine only, nobody else has
    taken the time to point that out).
    A few have claimed success via blowing the jacks out with compressed air, but that's not repeatable universally.  Most people end up keeping external speakers plugged in permanently. In other words, it seems a lot like a hardware problem; However,
    {edit 3}, my addition of "Edit 2" below makes it seem less like hardware.
    One interesting thing:  Headphones/speakers work permanently, there's no problem.  More curiously, when the sound goes out, plugging any form of headphone/microphone jack into
    EITHER the headphone
    OR the microphone jack turns the sound back on too.  This includes male-to-male extension cable with nothing installed.  If nothing is on the other end, the sound will go out
    again shortly, but jiggling or removing the male to male turns it back on.
    EDIT 2: When the sound goes out, another way to get it back: From system tray, right click the speaker item and choose SOUNDS.  The virtual VU meter shows that audio is playing (in tandem with the song, etc.), and is still showing audio
    playing.  The tabs available are Playback, Recording, Sounds, and Communications.  When the sound does stop (assuming I was watching Playback), I click the Recording tab (just the tab header), and sound starts again.
    P.S. What's the difference between "High Definition Audio Controller" under System Devices, and "Conexant SmartAudio HD" under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers", in Device Manager?  The "conexant smartaudio hd"
    points to the latest Conexant driver, the "High Definition Audio Controller" points to a default windows driver.  Just curious
    I've Binged this extensively:  Toshiba doesn't acknowledge the problem and nobody has fully solved the issue. I'm just curiously trying a few things myself, and I'm not sure if there's a way for the system to tell me an external mic/speaker has been
    plugged in.
    So to recap:  My main question, can I detect when the computer thinks a headphone or microphone is plugged in? (My theory, if I can prove that the computer THINKS something is plugged in, it's a start).
    Only secondarily, if anyone's interested, feel free to suggest ideas (here's what dozens of other posts have disproven: System restore; windows reinstall; outdated sound driver; outdated video driver; remove and re-detect sound and device via device manager;
    malware; BIOS upgrade; Flash and/or the Flash/Firefox/Hardware Acceleration issue (problem happens with MP3, Flash, WMA, HTML5, Games, everything).
    Thanks in advance!
    EDIT: One person (theirs was under warranty, mine's not) ended up getting a new motherboard & speaker via Toshiba warranty, diagnosis ""machine intermittent no sound due to PCB faulty".  I'm still interested in troubleshooting,
    though.  Link:
    One lucky person, who got their motherboard replaced (they were under warranty, most of us aren't)

    Hi,
    If there are any headphone or speaker plugged in and detected, it will show in audio device manager console.
    Type mmsys.cpl in Run, it will open Sound console.
    Have you tried Hardware and Sound troubleshooter?
