hi after having my ipod for months and filling my library with songs to help me pass long days my pc died. So got new laptop and want to put songs from ipod onto laptop. Its windows vista and I want to transfer purchases and songs burned from discs I have in my collection.Any help please let me know Thanks

Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. Pictures are designed to be copied off the device regularly as would be done with any digital camera. There is no logical reason why anyone would fail to do this with supposedly important pictures.
If a recent backup exists, it is also possible to restore the device from the most recent backup, this may restore pictures to the device. If it does, COPY THEM OFF THE DEVICE IMMEDIATELY for safekeeping.

The old rule of thumb was to keep 10-12 GB free. Any lower than that and you will start to have trouble. I was very close to that for a long time and never had any complaints. Now, Lion "encourages" 20% free space (on my newer 250 GB drive) so I try to keep it with more than 50 GB free.
Do you still have the original memory in that machine too? The metal plate you have to remove in the battery compartment also provides access to the RAM. Your machine will take 2 GB of RAM, possibly 3. You definitely want to max that out too.
Regardless, you definitely need a new hard drive. When Apple switched to PC components, they had to take a quality hit. These 2.5" notebook hard drives are not very reliable. I'm surprised your hard drive hasn't died by now. I usually get a new hard drive with every major OS upgrade. A $ 50 investment every couple of years is no big deal.
Unfortunately, you (and I) suffer from being an early adopter in 2006. Those 32-bit machines only accept 2 GB RAM (maybe 3) and are only 32-bit so they can't be upgraded to Lion. Because of this limitation, you won't see as dramatic an improvement as you would with a 2007 machine. If you run more than a couple of applications, your hard drive is always going to have to be doing some VM work. My 2006 machine has even lost its bluetooth. I gave it to my brother. My very similar 2007 Macbook is still running great.
So, you must get a new hard drive because your old one is likely on death's door. If you don't have at least 2 GB - get it. If you can't afford a new machine, you might want to consider an SSD. That might help mitigate your RAM limitations. You can spend from $ 100 to $ 350 and get a dramatic speed improvement.

Final Cut will not launch and desperate for a solution

My Mac locked up when I tried to reboot and I had to press the on/off button to reboot it.
When it rebooted, it would not mount the two G-Raid drives. When I took out the Firewire lead from the Sony tape deck, the G-Raid drives appeared on the desktop. If I plug the firwire lead back in, I cannot open the raid drives, but if I remove it, I can open them and see the contents.
If I leave the firwire lead out, when I launch FCP it says it cannot find the firewire device. If I click continue, FCP just doesn't launch. If I plug the firewire lead in for the tape deck, then it still does not see it.
I have tried doing the same thing with a different lead, and using the camera directly, but that gives me the same problem. It looks like a firewire connection problem, but I've tried two different firewire ports on the computer. It's a holiday weekend in the UK and I've got to get the job finished for Tuesday! Desperate to resolve this issue.

Hard Drive Crash and Desperate for Recovery Help

Problem: I have black and white JPEGS that need to be put back into color.
We had a motor seize on a back up hard drive before getting the data backed up a second time. I'm curious if there are any "backdoor" options for recovery. Here is the scenario:
3 months ago we finished editing a wedding and exported color and black & white photos for the client. We moved the original RAW files off the laptop onto a back up external hard drive. A few weeks later, that external hard drive, with ALL the original RAW images on it, crashed after our cat knocked it off our desk while the HD was running. However, we have the final JPEGS saved on DVDs. As fate would have it, the client came back later requesting several black and white photos to be given to them in color instead.
After a thorough look from a computer expert it was concluded that the recovery would have to be done in a lab at a cost of $1800. I gave a local shop our laptop to see if they could recover any "deleted" files and recapture the original RAW images. Still looking through those but out of the RAW files that are there, most are unreadable or contain only part of the photos. (Still haven't seen any of the clients photos we need anyway)
Is there a way to get the eported black & white JPEGS back into color?
Maybe a backup file or saved catalogue combined with the JPEGS?
Bottom line: Is there a way to get around this problem at all without the original RAW images?

Perhaps you are using the word backup to mean something different that I mean. To me, a backup means you have an original one on disk, and another copy on a different physical disk. It sounds as if you do not have this second copy. If you do, and I misunderstood, then please let me know.

This is probably not possible. You could, if you were very good with photoshop, "colorize" thie images with a lot of effort, but there would be no way to guarantee that the colorized images are in any way close to the original color images, other than through tedious manual effort.

Saved catalogs do not contain the information about what was contained in the original RAW. If you have the Lightroom previews available as well, and these contain the color previews, there is a way to extract the previews, but depending on how you set your preferences, these may not be high-res previews.
Is there a way to get around this problem at all without the original RAW images?
I don't think there is an easy way to do it. Manual tedious colorizing of the photos, extracting previews, or paying $1800. I hope this prompts you to adopt a strategy of regularly backing up your photos and catalog file.

Puzzled and clueless

Ok, so I started having some issues last week with Kernel panics on Start up, on this thread here. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1161960&tstart=0
I've tried almost every possible trouble shooting tip I could find with no solution. However, I now could boot in safe mode and opened up disk utility and found my hard drive is defective...could be why the kernel panics. I would get this error.

Disk utility couldn't fix it and I don't have disk warrior or techtools but tried all the fsck solutions to no avail.
So I thought of erasing everything on the HD by re-installing OSX, but everytime I do I have to restart. Upon the restart the kernel panic will show up again.
Is there anyway to install without having to restart? I've tried booting from the disc...still get the kernel panic.
I noticed though that when I reset the PRAM the computer starts up fine, but a regular start up will lead to the kernel panics. If I boot in safe mode and run from the CD, same thing happens
I'm convinced the HD probably needs to be swapped, I tested the RAM and it's all o.k.
Can anyone make sens of this and have any possible solutions?

Thanks for the tips.... unfortunately I'm still getting the kernel panics. I tried unplugging the hard drive, still the same, but the volume still needs to be repaired. Tried booting from the disc as you suggested by holding down C, still the same. I do recall last week though that on occasion I would get 3 beeps followed by 3 flashes on the LED wich led me to believe it was faulty RAM. I tested each one and they were o.k. I even tried using Rember to test the RAM and all passed. From what I troubleshooted, I think it may be the logic board which was already replaced about a year ago...ouch!
My main issue right now is getting kernel panics on start up, but again I can start up normally by zapping the PRAM.
I've got alot of software installed so I'm going to try to uninstall them and see if it helps.
Any other input or advice would be appreciated.

I'm New and Desperate For Help!

Hi, I'm extremely new. First post, first time on these forums. I've got a problem that I need help with. I bought a Nano in July (of 2006) and the version is 1.1.1 At the same timem I bought that iHome alarm clock where you put the iPod in to charge it and play the music. Well, my iPod has been working great since July until now. I can't turn it off with the click wheel. I am trying to hold the Play/Pause button to turn it off, but it won't. I leave it on on the iHome a lot, but when I'm am playing it personally, and I want it off, it won't turn off. THe only way I can get it off is by going to the sleep menu and having it sleep itself off. My hold switch isn't on and I'm doing everything right. Can anyone help me please?

I would try a reset.. PUSH AND HOLD the menu button and the middle button at the same time for 10 seconds. then try to turn it off after the reset

Stumped and Desperate for Advice

I've got a WLAN setup throughout three buildings. Centrally I've got a WRT300N router as well as a couple of computers using WMP54GR adapters. My most distant computer (a desktop terminal) is also using a WMP54GR linked by a Wireless-G range expander but it's giving me major file-sharing issues. I can access the internet from it, but I cannot run a program that requires access from a file from the central office to operate. I often get Error Code 53, a "path not found" error. What are my options? I have an N adapter on a terminal in a closer building that gives me poor signal but operates so fast that I rarely lose packets- the program is operational on that terminal.
I would love to keep the distant desktop in it's current location. I usually have "Very Good" to "Excellent" signal in this location, but the packet loss between that computer and the one in the office erradicately fluctuates from 25-100%... unfortunately usually closer to the latter. Is the range expander the problem here? Do I just need to accept that I need to move the terminal and purchase another N adapter, I'll take poor signal strengh if the program will work, the internet is unneccesary here. Should I look into an outdoor WAP and antenna? Would that make any difference? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

WRT300N connected to a normal G adapter = 54 mbps networking speed
G adapter getting signal from a WRE54G = 27 mbps or so networking speed
(range expander cuts the normal 54 mbps speed in half, in essence, it sacrifices speed for range)
Not sure where the exact problem is with your network but hopefully the facts presented helps.

Crashing and desperate

I am a longtime computer and FCP user, professional editor, etc. FCP is unstable and crashing like crazy. I've done all the usual maintenance routines (Diskwarrior everything, clean all system caches, new FCP prefs, Repair Permissions repeatedly from the boot CD, etc.). There definitely has been a change, as this was not happening awhile ago. The rest of the system in general seems quite stable. Lots of typical peripheral stuff for editing (host controller cards, video capture, etc.), and all seems fine and "as usual".
Crash report often says this:

After finally upgrading from a Power PC to 8-Core Mac Pro, I thought all my FCP & computer issues would be over.. Do not Disconnect and desperate

We have 2 nanos, one is working perfectly the other is not, even though I have resent it. Everytime I connect it to the USB I get a "Do not disconnect" message. When I go to itunes with this nano connected, there are no songs, and it looks like it doesn't even recognize the device. I have manually stopped and restarted it, I have repaired it through the diagnostic and updated all of the software. PLEASE help! Why isn't this nano recognized and the other one is?

Greys Anatomy and Desperate Housewives Starter kit won't play on iPod

My wife downloaded both starter kits for these tv shows. They both play in iTunes but neither will play on iPod Touch 2.1.
It say's it's not the right format for the ipod

I've had this issue too! If you skip to the next song in the playlist, and then press Play, the music should begin playing through the speaker as it used to. Not sure why, but it only happens on my iPod classic and doesn't happen on my iPhone 5, former 4S or iPad. Strange!

I bought a usb microphone (blue snowball). I can't hear any sound from it. The MIDI master volume is turned all the way down, and I can't turn it up because it's frozen/locked. Please help!!! Not very tech savvy, been at this for hours and desperate :(

I've been trying to fix this problem, seems like it would be simple, but apparently it is not. I just want to turn up the master volume control under my input tab in MIDI audio devices so I can use my blueball microphone.
This image above is what I'm currently dealing with. I put a red box around the volume control I want to use. That is the one I can't turn up because it is locked/frozen.
Please make steps as simple as possible!
