Puzzled by N96 and N81

Here's why i'm puzzled.
N95/N82 and others carry the omap 3d cpu... (I thought for n-gage ??)
N96 does not support N-Gage, because "lack of 3D chip"
N81 supports N-Gage, however it too has a "lack of 3D chip"
Now if you go to
http://www.glbenchmark.com/result.jsp
You'll see that the N81 is actually slower than the Nokia 6110, because it has no 3D chip.
See where i'm going?
Compare the N95 to the N81 on the game, Global Racer, you'll see how the N81 does what the Nokia 6110 does, about 3 frames per second if that.....
So the million dollar question, if the N81 supports N-Gage games then so should every single Nokia phone which does not have the omap CPU... the 6110 is faster, faster cpu, no 3D chip, yet i don't see N-Gage mentioned anywhere...
What's going on? How can a phone without a 3D chip which is found in the N82/N95 etc play n-gage games?....

To the best of my knowledge (and that's saying something), the N96 DOES support Ngage.
I don't know where you got that information. Like it was said 3D acceleration doesn't automatically prevent Ngage compatibility.
According to Nokia's little chart, it will not be supporting n-gage, but the point was not that it *can't* support, it obviously can along with every other symbian 60 nokia phone Nokia's released over the past couple of years, just that they're deciding not too...
http://www.nokia-tuning.net/index.php?s=processor
What interests me is that if the next gen phones of the N Series no longer use the omap cpu from texas instruments then the 3D acceleration will just be a relic from the past... obviously, the STn8815 Nomadik cpu (ARM926 332 MHz)
is going to be pretty powerful as it can support all that video functionality in real time to record tv shows and play them back, i'm betting it can pull off some nice calculations for games..... but that's another story.
http://www.st.com/stonline/products/families/mobile/processors/stn8815.htm
info on the N96 processor above.
The TI OMAP 2420 range processors can handle the 3D processing as you can see the n-gage phone itself where all this gaming began uses a 32-bit RISC CPU ARM-9 104 MHz which also happens to be in all of the "cheaper" models which is why every single phone should be capable of using n-gage and playing n-gage games..
just that nokia chooooooooses not to for the N96.
http://www.planetn96.com/images/n96vn95.jpg
As indicated on the chart from nokia (just the image is externally linked) that might be a no no, if it is, sorry i'll not post an image externally linked again, but the screenshot is directly from the nokia site which i can't seem to find...
it clearly states that N96 will not be support n-96, although quite clearly it could easily be added.

  • N96 and Mac OS X 10.4.11

    Hi
    Just taken delivery of my shiny new N96 and seem to have hit a rather large obstacle already...
    I attach it via USB to my Mac Mini in order to transfer media onto the drive (in Mass Storage mode) and the problem is that the transfer procedure either locks up completely (it will transfer some of the file and stop) OR it locks up and eventually completes but takes a long time to do so (thirty minutes for a 120MB folder of music) .
    Tried http://europe.nokia.com/A4423135 but the software does not recognise the 'phone so cannot sync.
    Any suggestions as to what to try appreciated.
    Mike

    Hey,
    Firstly download the NMT 1.3 for tiger www.nokia.com/mac. After the icon comes up in the menu bar, connect the device and then select PC suite mode on the device. Now go to tools & settings -Check for updates now- This will download the N96 device profile to your mac.
    All the best.
    Cheers

  • Nokia N96 and Rover Rover Car-Kit

    Hi and Help!
    I hope someone can throw some light on a problem I'm having with my Nokia 96 (on 02), which I upgraded from an N95 8Gb at the beginning of December 2008. I have had numerous Nokia Phones (and a Blackberry) all on 02 and all working well with the built in car-kit in my Range Rover Sport. The two are connected via Buluetooth, but I am experiencing the following problems:
    Everytime I get in the Car with the phone, it asks if I want to connect and asks me to input the code which I do and it connects. It is listed as authorised but I still have to go through this procedure each time.
    When I'm on a call, the quality is good, but after a couple of minutes, I can hear the person on the other end, but the speech is very clipped, and they cannot hear me and as long as we both persevere, the call continues and returns to normal after 20-30 seconds but this issue is repeated every few minutes for the duration of the call. This happens whether I make or recieve calls.
    Some of the things I have tried but which have not worked:
    02 have replaced the phone and I'm now on my second, brand new unit.
    I upgraded the software on both and I'm currently running 12.043, 26/11/08
    I have had Land Rover look at the car kit when it was serviced yesterday (26/01/2009). They confimed they had tried it with other Nokia phones and it was working correctly and could not replicate the fault, albeit they weren't using an N96
    I have independently checked the Land Rover webpages and confimred that the N96 is compatible
    Partial and full reboots.
    Deleting and setting up new Bluetooth connections
    Changing the Network from Dual to GSM only
    Trawling through N96 and Land Rover forum looking for some sort of clue, and I can find absolutely nothing anywhere else!
    I hope someone can help as I'm finding this increasingly frustrating and it's knocking my faith in Nokia products, and I'm considering returning to my N95.
    Many thanks

    Hi,
    Have got almost the same problem as you detailed below, however call quality when connected is fine. Even have the same car. Got a brand new N96 after two weeks but it is exactly the same, keeps requesting the pairing and code instead of connecting automatically.
    If I cannot get this sorted I will swap for another cheaper phone that will work. Basic Nokias do the trick. Like Nokia have never used anything else.

  • UIX/BC4J puzzle to render and unknown number of data tables.

    Hello, I have the next puzzle I haven't solved:
    The requirements for a page are that it has to render Contract numbers as table titles and Bills dued to each contract as table content, something like this:
    Contract No. 4353
    Bill No. Date Amount
    8799 25/04/2006 $800.00
    3690 25/04/2006 $1,000.00
    and then more tables like that as contract rows are found in a view object.
    I have two linked view objects: the contractView and the billsView.
    Besides, the contractView has attributes which should be rendered as the bills table footer (amount total for example).
    I found a way to iterate over the contractView and then the billsView, with something like this:
    <tableLayout>
        <contents childData="${bindings.contractViewIterator.allRowsInRange}">
             <rowLayout>
                  <contents>
                    <header text="${uix.current.contractNumber}"/>
                    <table tableData="${uix.current.attributeValues[15].allRowsInRange}"/>
                    <!-- the 15th attribute is the link accessor, so I'm getting the billsView here -->
                         <!-- and here would go more code to render the table contents -->
                    </table>
                  </contents>
              </rowLayout>
           </contents>
    </tableLayout>This works fine for tables with no footer data, but I need to display the footer section of the table, the problem is that the footer section data is in the parent view (contracts) and I cannot reference it inside the <table> because there the "uix.current" object represents a row in the billView.
    If someone has another idea of achieving this, I'd really appreciate it if you post it here, or a way to reference the parent uix.current object.
    Thank you.

    The only solution I came up with was to use the link accessor in the opposite direction, so I can get the contractView and display the totals on each column.
    So, the next code does it:
    <footer>
         <formattedText text="${uix.current.contracts.totalAmount}"/>
    </footer>Where contracts is the backwards accessor to the parent view object and totalAmount the attribute name to display in the column footer. I had to generate the row implementation for both view objects to access attributes by name to make it easier.
    I post the solution in case someone runs into the same problem.
    Thank you.

  • N96 and video capture

    is there a particular piece of hardware and software people use to capture video from the TV out cable for the N96.
    I've tried into an ATI TV card and a gamebridge and the picture is NOT good at all. Doesn't even show up on the gamebridge.
    NEED HELP URGENTLY

    Nope I've used it all the time.
    Just check that you are using the correct settings int he phone (PAL, NTSC, etc.) and match your card.
    Some things to keep in mind:
    TV out output is VGA but the actual resolution is QVGA as the TV out cable just clones the phone screen. There are two exceptions: PHOTOS and VIDEO. When viewing pictures and watching video this is output at VGA resolution.
    I use a Xoltrix tv tuner card.

  • WMV, N96 and N95-8GB

    The new N96 will support wmv/wma. Is that hardware-related, or could future firmware updates to the N95/8GB enable those handsets to play these formats too? And if it's firmware-related, would Nokia make it possible on other handsets?
    When the N95-8GB was first released it couldn't play Youtube videos, but the recent update made it possible. I hope the same for windows media too.

    There may be some royalties issues, so Nokia may not be allowed to provide it to devices already in the consumer's hands, let's not forget who owns the rights to those codecs...

  • I'm puzzled about ldd and "/usr/lib/../lib"

    I'm building my own custom linux distro, and I'm puzzled about why 'ldd /usr/bin/gobject-query' shows "libffi.so.6 => /usr/lib/../lib/libffi.so.6" instead of "libffi.so.6 => /usr/lib/libffi.so.6". Archlinux is the host system for building base packages to set up chroot and rebuild them again inside. When building glib2 outside chroot I get "libffi.so.6 => /usr/lib/libffi.so.6". Building it inside chroot ldd shows "libffi.so.6 => /usr/lib/../lib/libffi.so.6". I know that it's harmless and only a cosmetic issue, but I want to know why there is two dots and how to fix this somehow.. Anyone expert on this matter?

    What's in your /etc/ld.so.conf ?
    Here's mine (Gentoo):
    # ld.so.conf autogenerated by env-update; make all changes to
    # contents of /etc/env.d directory
    /lib64
    /usr/lib64
    /usr/local/lib64
    /lib
    /usr/lib
    /usr/local/lib
    include ld.so.conf.d/*.conf
    Arch:
    # /etc/ld.so.conf
    include /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf
    # End of file
    As you can see, Gentoo's ld.so.conf is more interesting. Running "ldd /bin/bash" outputs:
    linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007ffeac4ea000)
    libreadline.so.6 => /lib64/libreadline.so.6 (0x00007f118f80b000)
    libncurses.so.5 => /lib64/libncurses.so.5 (0x00007f118f5ac000)
    libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x00007f118f1ff000)

  • For everybody with a N96 and stuck at firmware ver...

    Hello everybody
    As some n96 users know the phone had lots of bugs and was working very slow. I went to a Nokia Care Point because I wanted everything fixed. I couldn't update to version 12 via my cellphone, but at the care point they had a dongle and they could install the new firmware.
    So if your phone has version 11 with the bugs and you want to have new firmware but can't do it via the phone: go to a care point!
    Version 12 is very stable, overall performance is increased, and nowadays, I just have to do a total reboot only a few times a day instead of a few times an hour ;-)
    I really hope Nokia will not release the n97 without checking every bug first!!!

    Gdgmacguy : my friend , i tried all basics soft reset, hard reset on my iphone 4s..the phone is not booting at all its stuck red battery screen..even itunes is not recognising the device...
    My other concern is, i started to use my spare iphone 3gs after my 4s gt dead..but 3gs is also showing same symptoms..randomn switch off and will boot only once conected to charger with plenty of charge..i tried to restore, reset on this device..im afraid it might crash as welll...so need a solution..

  • Ck-7w And N81 8GB

    Is the N81 not compatable with the Ck-7w car kit?

    Hi! Just wanted to share the solution to my previously described problem.
    It turned out that the CK-7W carkit wouldn't work properly as a result of an extension CAT-5 cable. During the installation ut turned out that the cable that runs from the phoneholder (MBC-15S) to the CK-7W was too short, so I decided to use an extension cable. The extension cable was an ordinary CAT-5 cable with 8P8C plugs in both ends, approximatly 50 cm long, connected to a free standing socket witch allows a 8P8C plug to inserted in both ends, making it possible to plug the male ends from the original datacable to the aftermarket CAT-5 plug(8P8C plug) together.
    I removed the CAT-5 cable and used only the original datacable and the problem was solved.
    I tested the CAT-5 cable and the free standing socket in a computer and everyting worked fine. So I guess there was nothing wrong with my aftermarket cable equipment.

  • Noki N96 and ANY car Kit

    I have a N96 with Software version 30.033.098.1. When I try and dial from my Car Kit (Bury CC9060) the N96 says "Connection Error" and then "not allowed". It did this on the previous CK-15W, which I thought was faulty which is why I upgraded to a Bury. On my wifes CK-7W if I try last number redial by double clicking the Nokia button then I get the same. Dialling from the handsets works fine on all the car kits. I've toggles Remote SIm and it makes no difference.
    Anyone got any thoughts on this.

    Trust me...this won't be a Pioneer problem, it'll be a Nokia problem. See Nokia have been completely complacent with the fact that their phones are nice & shiny and they have a really good user interface. Their problem is they always release their software before it's ready and then let us (the punters) test it for them.
    Well...MR Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo...I have finally got around my Nokia problem....I've finally binned my Nokia and gone for an iPhone 3GS.....and have not looked back yet. I was really worried about not having a physical keypad however Apple have done it well.....It pairs and works well with my Bury car kit......
    Interestingly Nokia never replied to my first post...wonder if they'll reply to this..or delete it.
    Another advantage is that I don't need the memory hungry, buggy Nokia PC Suite anymore.
    Long live the iPhone! I am a happy EX-Nokia customer!

  • N96 and Navicore 2007

    Does anyone have any idea how to get Navicore to work on the N96?
    I have Navicore 2006 and the upgrade to 2007 which I used on my N95. I have tried to install it on the N96 but it will not run.
    Nokia maps are fine other than for the fact that having paid for Navicore I am reluctant to pay again for voice guidance. Further, Navicore includes traffic and speed cameras.

    V5 on N96 runs perfectly far better than v4 20 ever did on the n95
    I get a good signal even with a solar reflect screen
    the GPS gets a signal far quicker the the n95 ever did
    I think it may be how you are using it
    The GPS will only work if the card is registerd to the phone otherwise it works on a external garmin GPS unit not the inbuilt N96 one
    make sure you have the correct registration details on the card If you copy the aplication OFF the original garmin card to another SD it wil NOT work as there is an alogrithem of the card serial number and the garmin version that activates the GPS each sd card has its own unique serial
    Garmin Will be able to help but you may need to buy a new registration if it is on different card
    Nokia user / modder since Nokia Orange and Mobira user too before that

  • Nokia N96 and PC Suite

    I am using PC Suite v. 7.1.18 (Win XP SP3) with my N96 connecting via bluetooth. I have paired the devices and authorized them. Still I have to confirm on my N96 every time PC Sync tries to synchronize with my phone. With my old N95 this all happened automatically. What can I do to fix this? Christian

    Same problem here.
    Just bought my N96.
    VERY frustrating to have to 'confirm' twice every time there is a connection.
    Also I get a generic phone pic (looks like an old 6300 - not my N96).
    After spending so much for my N96 it would be nice to actually see it in PC Suite..

  • N96 and Nokia Repair in USA

    My Nokia N96-3 crashed a few days back while updating the firmware using NSU. I tried reviving it using the instruction posted here, unfortunately nothing worked. After contacting Nokia care couple of times for repair options.  I was directed to the Nokia website again to fill the paperwork for repair request to a Nokia service center in Huntsville AL. The website didn't work to send the request was down the first day but I was able to input the IMEI for my phone and print out the paperwork finally the following day. The instructions say to not send accessories/enhancements with the phone unless the problem is because of the accessory. I shipped just my phone to PALCO/NOKIA service center with its backcover and without the accessories like battery,simcard,memorycard. The turn around for the repair time was amazing. It took PALCO just oneday to fix the firmware and my phone was shipped back to me. I received the package yesterday only to find the phone's battery (back cover) cover was missing. I am ok with it too and sent another request and also called Nokia care abou the missing part. On both occasions (over the phone/email) I was told that I should not send an accessory with the phone. I was just surprised to hear that battery cover (back cover) is considered a accessory and not phone part. Anyway, long story short if you are sending your phone for service don't send you phone's back cover with it. PALCO will not send it back to you.

    Funnily enough I have about three spare N95 battery covers because they told me to keep mine, yet they sent me a new one with the refurbed phone anyway. So I guess they're not consistent about it. Anyway, the rule of thumb should be "if you can take it off the phone, keep it".
    Help I'm trapped in a sig factory.
