Pxi switching boards causes pc can´t boot
Hi,
I have pxi-1044 with some pxi boards (pxi-4065 / 6509 / 2529 / 8431 / 8432 / 2576 (3 borads) )
and the pxi-8310 controller.
When the system was configured for the first time, it works ok.
but 2 of the borads (pxi-8432 / pxi-2576 ) must interchange of slot (because of space problems with theirs conectors)
when the system powered, both led (power on pxi chassis) and (controller led) set, but windows xp can not boot,
controler led switch of, and computer reboot. again and again.
I remove all boards and check that all are recognized through MAX except the two boards switching.
I change pxi-8232 to another slot (never used) and the system look to work ok,
this board is recognized.
What is the right procedure to interchange some boards when MAX has a previos configuration?
I would like to use the slots which i have problems with, is it possible?

Is it possible to boot from the onboard RAID?
I'm not sure cause I can't boot from any HD that is connected to the RAID IDE when I use them in "non Raid" mode.
I have an entry in the Bios "boot device" where I can set "Legacy SCSI". Is this the entry for the RAID Controller?

I've got backup to my backup. Call me paranoid if you like, but I hate standing there looking like a horse's tail end and crying about lost data and irreplaceable applications because I didn't do some simple housekeeping.
Add me to the "tri-backup" team (the wife hates all my hard drives.... sees money spent, I guess....).
I also keep 'hard copy" DVD of archived data, and all photos and audio. It only takes losing some important data once to underscore the importance of backup. In my case, it was a near miss (was able to scavenge the SCSI drive), but it scared the bejeebers outta' me...... -
Can a broken Display Switch module cause my screen to not turn on or be recognized?
Hi All,
I have recently been having some issues with my LCD screen in my HP Pavillion dv9700. Ever since I replaced the left hinge on my notebook, I have had to fiddle with my screen by closing and opening it during booting to get it to turn on. This only happened when booting into linux. When booting into vista, the screen would turn on without a problem. This morning I was so fed up with this, that I thought maybe some switch was not getting pressed to tell the notebook that the lid was opened. After looking at all the cables and putting everything back together, my screen now no longer turns on no matter how much I open and close the lid. It wont even turn on in vista. I am however able to connect a vga cable to my notebook and use an external monitor without any problems. I opened up the nvidia control panel in both windows and linux and it does not recognize my notebook monitor, only the external monitor shows up. Could this be caused by a broken display switch module? How can I diagnose this problem? Is there a way to bypass the display switch module by jumping two wires?
Any ideas are appreciated,

I just figured out that it cant be my display switch module because when i close the lid to my notebook, the external monitor shuts off and the computer goes into standby mode. I now think this might be an issue with the ribbon cable. Is there anything else which might be causing this problem which I am overlooking? -
How can I boot my PXI controller into real-time without a floppy disk?
My PXI controller is in a lab which has intense magnetic fields that could corrupt the floppy disk used to boot the PXI controller into the LabVIEW Real-Time (RT) Operating System. How can I boot the PXI controller into real-time directly from the hard drive?
If you are using LabVIEW 5.1.2 Real-Time (RT), launch Remote System Explorer and select Disks >> Create Format Hard Drive Disk. If you have LabVIEW 6 RT, launch the Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) and select Tools >> RT PXI Disk Utilities >> Create Format Hard Drive Disk (LabVIEW RT 6 has not be released yet). Once you have created the disk, boot the PXI controller with the Format Hard Drive Disk, and this will format the PXI's hard drive and install the real-time OS boot loader. Now you can reboot the PXI without a floppy disk and configure the PXI using Remote System Explorer or MAX. Be aware that this will remove all information from the hard drive, including other operating systems.

Can I switch to an external monitor on boot without OS?
I have a cracked screen and I freshly formatted the hard drive on Windows (So basically, my MAC has no OS but I have an installer). Will I be able to switch to an external monitor on boot so I could see the OS installation well? if so, how do I switch?
Not in a position to test this exactly right now so I am just speculating.
IF this is possible, it should just be a matter of connecting your external display prior to booting, then booting the computer up (I suppose into the recovery partition, or an install disk). Since the computer recognizes the built in display and doesn't know its cracked, it will still display on there (unless you go into clamshell mode by closing the computer after it loads up the external display). I don't know if it will default to mirroring or extending.
Again, that is if it will work. Without an OS installed, I am not sure how it will behave. -
Mavericks can only boot in safe mode
In can only boot my Imac 27' (end of 2009) in safe mode.
The problem started in Lion, when the computer suddenly froze.
I upgraded (in safe mode) to Mavericks 10.9.2, took away all Launch Agents and Daemon that are not Apple (both in System and User's), done all the permission repairs, reset memory, fsck and turn the plug off the computer. The only thing I was not able to do is the hardware test (for some reason, the command + D to access the internet testing is not working). I have no external devices or cables attached.
My 2TB hard drive is divided in 3 partitions. I have got 2 user accounts.
Even with all this, I can only start in safe mode.

Can't boot from IDE hard drives
Just purchased a barebones system with a KEN NEO Platinum board running an AMD 64 3400+. Tried to install old Maxtor hard drive (40 gb) into new system and a blue screen pops up for less than one second and reboots PC. I can’t read the blue screen but I believe it is saying there is a hardware conflict.
What is causing this. The CMOS recognizes the HD but it can't boot from it. I’ve got two of these units and both have the same problems. I put the drive back into the original PC and it works fine.
Need help desperately.When I connect the cables, they show which is the slave and which is the master. In the CMOS, everything looks fine. I've noticed alot of people are having difficulty installing used and new hard drives. I've been working with PC's for quite a while and I've never had this much trouble. I was hoping there was something I missed in the CMOS settings.

Can't boot from OSX cd - Kernel Panic or bad CPU?
Greetings, All! I've looked at all the articles related to this that I can find, here and on other sites, but have not been able to solve the problem. Here's a list to briefly describe my issue:
-Got Prohibitory sign on my MDD Dual 867 when I tried booting into OS X (10.3).
-Tried all the resets (PRAM, PMU), re-seated RAM, took out RAM, etc.
-Trashed OS, and tried to re-install, but Mac won't boot from DVD (10.3) or CD (10.2) - just get the spinning wheel and finally Prohibitory sign...
-Ran Hardware test to loop for about 17 hours; nothing, all fine.
Then I just recently noticed that when I run Digital Performer 3 (OS9), it usually shows 2 usage indicators for CPU performance (1 for each processor) but now only shows one. So, I'm thinking a processor may have died, or become unseated, or something. But I read somewhere, on one of the forums, that it isn't likely for one of a pair of processors to go, or if it did, the other wouldn't be able to function solo. But if that weren't the case, and the Mac can run on 1 processor, why would that keep the Mac from booting from the OSX disk?
The Mac still runs fine in OS9, though it does seem to be a little slower when I do processor-intensive operations in DP, and sometimes hangs on startup, and seems to have some "sleep" issues (won't wake back up sometimes...). I don't know of any way to check if both processors are functioning in OS9. Does anyone know of a utility that will do that? Or if there's one in the OS (The Profiler only shows processor speed)? And would that cause the Kernel Panic and keep the Mac from booting in OSX? It's very frustrating. I appreciate any help or tips anyone may have to offer. Peace, GelonHey Guys!
I think I know the "why", but not the solution...
I have a PowerMac G4 400Mhz Dual Processor, and some day I had the same troubles. No boot on OS X, but I can in OS9. Checking the Open Firmware commands, I saw one of the processor marked as "dead". So, (dont't ask how) I removed one processor from the logic board. Now I got the same "Processor dead", I can boot on OS9, (with an alert for the processor) but is stable. No boot in OS X.
So, what I suposse (having the same reports in PC computers trying to run OS X) is that the OS X checks for the compliance of the System for running. When a processor fails, the OS X can not recognize the system as valid (as in some PC computers happens) and can not boot. I also suposse if we can get a "patched" OS X for PowerPC or patch the firmware in any way, we can work with just one processor. Or, buying a new processor for the Mac.

Solaris 10 11/06 can't boot if I remove DVDROM

I try to install Solaris 10 x86 11/06 on HP Proliant DL140 with SATA HDD but no DVDROM...
I borrow my PC DVDROM and install to my HDD...eveything run fine
but when I remove my DVDROM, solaris can't boot the OS...
may be because configuration change...
Cause when I'm install solaris with DVDROM install the disk became c1d0
but with no DVDROM became c0d0...
I try gooling move solaris disk boot do some stuff like rm /dev/dsk/c* etc... devfsadm...edit /etc/vfstab
in failsafe mode, but still can't boot...
but everything run normal when I install the DVDROM?
how can I boot the solaris without DVDROM install...(change bootdisk from c1d0 toc0d0)

Still waiting :c/Yea, this thing is useless for me. I ordered the free media kit from Sun so I can have an authentic DVD and it never arrived - so I installed Windows XP Professional Edition back on the system.
I even upgraded the RAM from 256 to 512 because I thought it was a memory issue (not enough RAM to start the installation).
Pretty useless until it actually supports more hardware - it's like trying to run MacOSX on a non-Apple system.
I'll check back in a couple years and see if it's usable, cause it isn't ATM. That is quite a shame, too.

CPUA Fail light comes on then mac freezes. Can still boot and use for a few minutes.
I have a first gen Mac Pro (2006) which has been working fine until a week or two ago. I have this computer set up with boot camp to run both OSX and Windows. I can boot into either os and run for between 2 and 5 minutes before the computer locks up and the fans turn on full blast. Generally when the computer locks up there are some significant graphical artifacts (the GFX output kind of tears horizontally across the screen then stops.).
Due to the graphics issue, I originally thought this might be a problem with my gfx card (ATI Radeon HD 5770). I pulled the side of the case off and booted the computer up. All fans, including that on the GFX card are running normally. What I did notice was that when the computer locked up, two CPUA lights lit up on the mobo. I pulled the gfx card out and booted the computer again. After around 10 minutes the fans switched into high gear, but the problem led did not light up.
Does anyone have any ideas? Since the fans are kicking into high gear after a while even without the gfx card, I don't think the gfx card is necessarily the issue. Would appreciate a second opinion.AppleCare has long since run out on this unit so I'm more likely to replace it rather than repair. Would the logic board error still let it boot up and function fine for a period of time? Just trying to get a good understanding here before I give up on this computer.

I'm trying to get a spare Sup. V engine module operational in a 4507E and get the above message when it try to boots.
I am not aware if this spare had been used in production before.
Not sure if I need to open a support ticket, so I thought I would see if anyone else has seen this behavior.

You don't have the right IOS version to meet the minimum requirements for this chassis.

Table 5 lists 12.2(40)SG as the minimum IOS required for a 4507R-E chassis and 12.2(54)SG as the minimum IOS for a 4507R+E chassis. You only have 12.2(37)SG1 on your engine, hence the lack of boot.
Upgrade the IOS via ROMMON (slow and painful, but it'll work) and re-try.

Satellite P855-34K can't boot in CSM mode from USB or ODD
Hi everyone, first time here for me.
I recently bought a Satellite P855-34K laptop, with UEFI, and I'm finding impossible to boot with UEFI set into CSM mode when using USB sticks or CDs/DVDs.
And yes, I obviously DID disable Secure Boot and switched to CSM boot in UEFI's setup.
Fast boot has always been disabled, too.
I tried to toggle USB3.0/2.0 and the activation of USB in sleep mode, no way.
Plus, that would make a difference for USB only, as I said optical media don't boot either.
All medias (USB sticks and optical) work flawlessly on other computers, and don't support UEFI (so CSM booting is a must for me). I even tried two USB sticks on another, fairly recent, Toshiba laptop of a friend of mine (can't remember the model right now), and CSM boot worked flawlessly on that (I obviously needed to toggle the Secure Boot and UEFI/CSM boot options).
Do note that USB sticks set up for UEFI boot DO work. In fact I have two OSes on my HDD, both set to boot via UEFI, and I installed the second OS with a UEFI stick.
One more interesting fact: UEFI setup (F2 at boot) displays USB sticks make and model correctly. UEFI boot menu (F12 at boot) DOESN'T do that in CSM mode, but DOES in UEFI mode (obviously sticks won't boot in UEFI).
I tried to search both on this forum and on Google, and I wasn't able to find an answer.
Talking with Toshiba webform and phone support (and after going with them through every single UEFI/BIOS option and finding everything fine), they suggested to send the laptop to one of their service centers near me to better analyze the problem.
But since this looks like a potential UEFI bug to me on my peculiar model, sending the laptop to them would be of little use: they would likely acknowledge the error in UEFI, but until Toshiba releases an update, nothing could be done; plus, I would have to go through the hassle of sending my laptop to another town and be without it for some days (the nearest service center is not quite near to my town).
By the way, I have the latest BIOS (UEFI actually) version: 6.70.

Now the questions:
- Does anyone with the same model have this problem?
- To Toshiba forum personnel reading this: if it's a problem affecting this model, is Toshiba aware of the issue and/or doing something about it?
- Are there any workarounds other than using/setting up UEFI-enabled boot media? Yes, I know UEFI is the long-term solution and eventually every OS will support it, but right now not every OS does and I NEED to boot from other media for various reasons.

Hi everyone, sorry for disappearing here, was busy... and couldn't carry on all the tests I wanted.
However, the good news is that what *michael_toshiba_forum* found apparently works for me, too!
*I loaded the setup defaults from the BIOS (UEFI) setup, and now it appers I can finally boot both CSM and UEFI media!*
Great find michael, thank you! By the way, USB sticks make and models now DO appear in the F12 menu while in CSM!

Didn't test all my media thoroughly, though. I'll post more accurate results as soon as I can.
However, while it looks like we have the solution to the problem, we still don't know the cause, and I feel this deserves to be investigated more.
Let me explain my point: I checked (and double-checked on the phone with a Toshiba tech) every +single+ UEFI setup option, and couldn't find anything wrong, as I said in my original post. One interesting UEFI feature is that it introduces "UEFI variables" (as I read online), and as far as I understand there is +not+ a way to interact with them in UEFI setup (at least not on my PC!). If the problem was a wrongly set UEFI variable, maybe doing a "load default" did reset both UEFI parameters +and+ variables.
And since UEFI variables are intended to be modified by programs too (unlike legacy BIOS parameters stored in CMOS), I think we may have some scenarios where programs could potentially trigger the problem again. *michael_toshiba_forum* said in his other thread that his problem was triggered after upgrading to Win8.1. Maybe in my case this is due to the second OS I installed (Kubuntu 13.04) just after buying my laptop.
Anyway, I'll do some tests again and do some research and report my findings.
IMHO, if my theory is right, Toshiba should create a README for this, the solution to this problem looks not so obvious (nor me neither Toshiba support thought about it).

I will need to know in more detail how your system is behaving to give you better tips, so please feel free to send me more information.
For now, let me send you a couple of troubleshooting tips:
Cable connection
Make sure both ends of the copper cable are well connected to the PCI-MXI-3 and the PXI-MXI-3 boards. Be careful when disconnecting the copper connectors. you need to push down the plastic connector so it does not get damaged. Damaged connectors could result in bad MXI-3 links.
If the connector has not been used properly, it could be broken (this rarely happens). Make sure you are not connecting the cable backwards.
Power - Up order.
It seems you are controlling your PXI chassis using a PCI-to-PXI extender (copper cable). Make sure you are powering up the PXI chassis BEFORE powering up the PC.
PXI is built on top of the CompactPCI spec, so it uses the PCI high speed bus. The MXI-3 extender is really a PCI-to-PCI bridge toyour computer, so for your PC, all the slots in the PXI chassis look like more PCI slots. In other words, your computer suddenly has more PCI slots.
It is very important to power up the PXI chassis first before powering up the computer, because at power up the PC enumerates all PCI slots. If the PXI chassis is OFF during boot up, the slots in the PXI chassis will never get enumerated and your PC will never see the board installed in the PXI chassis.
Normal Power up LED sequence
Each MXI-3 board has four LED light on its front panel: two green lights (POWER and LINK) and two orange lights (Tx and Rx). When you power up the PXI chassis you should see one green light and one orange light ON steadily (POWER and ). Then, when you power up the PC, both green lights shoudl be ON steadily and the orange lights shoudl flicker.
If you do not see this behaviour at power up, most probably one of your boards its damage.
If you have another MXI-3 extender kit, try to set up the system mixing the boards from the two kits to try isolate which board is the one that is damaged.
Run the MXI-3 Optimization Software
The MXI-3 Optimizaton Software makes sure that the link between the PC and the PXI chassis has been set up properly. It will show you an error otherwise.

The PC powers up fine if the PXI chassis is OFF, but if I turn on the PXI chassis first and then try to power up my PC, my PC does not boot
There are several things that could be causing this behaviour:
It could be that your PC has an old BIOS that has issues detecting PCI-to-PCI bridges. You could try upgrading the BIOS.
A part of the hardware could be damaged. If you have a main-stream computer (like a DELL or HP PC, for example), test your MXI-3 extender in it to make sure that the hardware is in good conditions. Main-stream computers tend to use new Motherboards with good BIOS.

Well lets trace back the steps. It started happening at the time you added the 480.
I don't want to be a pessimist, but there is the possibility that an overload on the PSU may have caused a problem on the 12V circuit of the PSU causing other damage on the 12V board input circuits.
but how motherboard could be damaged, this psu ocz fatal1ty 550w is about 1,5 year old, and its sufficient to turn on it gtx 480, even pc didn't turn on when i changed on gtx 480. -
Mac Mini (2011) can't boot, no screen display.
Hi, my mac mini (2011) finally won't startup today.
It was since two weeks ago, the mini goes freeze very frequently, I discovered that the fan speed was always below 2000rpm, meantime, the CPU temp was around 80-90 degree, it is around 25 degree in the room, last Friday I installed a software named smcfancontrol, which can manually speed up the fan, and it seems better, and the computer runs faster, I think the CPU is running in full speed.
Today, I opened a video to watch, after about ten minutes, the computer goes freeze again, and of course I force powered it down by pressing the power button on the back, then the tragic came:
- when I try to boot up the machine, the front light turns on, then off with a "ka" sounds like the hard drive shutting down(force powering it down)
- after around two seconds, the light goes on again, and the fan smoothly goes to full speed, there is nothing shows up on screen, as well as no apple boot up sound.
- I tried to reset smc (power down, unplug power cable, wait 15 seconds, plug in power cable, wait 5 seconds, power on), no luck.
- I tried to reset pmu (at least internet says it's pmu, it seems apple website did not mention how to reset pmu on mac mini, power down, hold power button for five seconds, power on), no luck
- I also tried to unplug the memory, try with every single one to boot, no luck
- last Friday, when I can still boot up the computer, I thought there might too much dust, I removed the fan and cleaned it up, it looks a small piece of plastic on the fan plug were damaged, but the smcfancontrol app still can control its speed, therefore I think the fan is OK.
- during many retry, there was one time, the fan goes full speed at startup, with no front light off,(my current status is fan goes to full speed gently).
- the computer is connected with an AV amplifier, then output to a plasma TV, when the computer is powered off, the TV displays a background of amp, when I startup the computer, although no video output from computer, the TV goes to a "No Signal" status, I dont's think this is related to my problem.
the computer is out of warrentee, but bought only for less than two years... I really want it back to work, can someone help me? many thanks!
wish you all have a good day.Hard to troubleshoot when you can't turn on the computer on any more. One option is to bring it to an Apple store to have them look at it. They will tell you what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix. I have never heard of them charging for a diagnostic and an estimate.
If your CPU was running hot all the time and your fan had small plastic pieaces, in my opinion, something got fried. The mini is so compact, that the excessive heat may have also over heated your hard drive causing thd "ka" sound.
If you decide to continue in to use a Mac Mini as a media server, may I would suggest using iStat to monitor it. I use iStat on my 2011 Mac Mini Media Server to monitor CPU usage, all sensors, and internet incoming and outcoming.
