PXI wont boot past BIOS, strange characters displayed (possible HDD failure)

I've just acquired a PXI-1042 with a much older 8186 Controller which does not boot past the BIOS.
Once powered up the sytem recognizes the HDD and available ram and even does a ram check but then it displays some strange characters; what appear to be "AC" and two dos smiley faces.
CMOS battery has been changed and system time has been updated as well. HDD is recognized in bios and is selected as the boot priority.
This could be a bad HDD since I know nothing of functionality of this PXI, other than its "hardly been used".
Just figure I'd ask around before going through the trouble of purchasing a new drive through IT.

It's possible the drive is fine, but just does not have an operating system installed.  If this PXI-8186 controller originally shipped with Windows, it may have an OS recovery partition.  This KnowledgeBase article is a good reference:  Hard Drive Recovery and OS Installation.
If you want to check the integrity of the drive itself, here is another relevant KnowledgeBase article: Hard Disk Drive Diagnostic Tool for PXI and PXIe Embedded Controllers.

  • Macbook pro a1150 wont boot past kernel, stuck on gray screen.

got a macbook pro a1150 ati 1600 gpu.  last for characters in sn are vww.  will not boot past gray screen after the gray screen with the apple logo.  it has a fresh install of 10.6 on a new hard drive from a laptop of the same exact kind.  when in target mode and its Hard Drive used as a boot divice, it will boot.  no broken graphic on startup with the apple icon and the pin wheel spinning.  boots to safe mode just fine, will even do updates.  but will not boot from the NEW hard drive or the dvd rom.  when i put the old hard drive in with 10.5 it wont boot past the blue screen and the same with the 10.5 install disc i baught.  reset pram, changed ram, removed wifi card and even tried disconnecting the dvd rom but still will not go to the login screen.  even disabled auto login (when it was in target mode).  do i reflow the gpu? is it a gpu problem?  one thing strange.... in safe mode, lines show up on the mouse icon and just that.  the rest of the screen shows everything fine, i've seen this before with the nvidia chipset but not with ati.  how do i fix it?

to better explain... the macbook pro in question never get to the blue startup screen which happenes before the login menu.  not though dvd rom, hard drive, external dvd rom or external hard drive.  just stop there.  i hear the hard drive working / dvd spinning and the computer reading the disc but after a few min of just seeing the grey screen both would spin down.

  • Power Mac G5 wont boot past the Apple Logo

    Mac: Power Mac G5 2.7Ghz DP w/ 4gb RAM (2x1gb, 4x512mb), Leopard
Last week, I formated this computer and reinstalled OS X 10.5. I updated everything, reinstalled all my applications and replaced my documents. Everything was good for a couple days. I have and HP 1350 all-in-one printer (which HP no long has mac support for that model, so I can only use the scanner as a photocopier, but that's not the issue, it prints fine and I have printed files since the formatting) The printer is connect via USB to my Power Mac and then shared on my home network, wirelessly, with 2 other MacBooks and a 27" iMac. My roommate was trying to print something from his MacBook. In the printer queue on the MacBook, the file would say it was printing, but nothing would actually printer. When I went to the printer settings on the Power Mac, the dialog box said the printer was "in use." I reset the printer, nothing happened. I restarted the Power Mac, properly, and now the computer wont boot past the Apple logo. The spinning gear appears and spins for a minute or 2 and then it will just reboot on its own. It will just keep doing this in a continuous loop.
I've tried to boot into safe mode (holding shift) but it still does the same thing.
I manage to get the CD drive open by booting into open Firmware. I restarted the computer and was able to boot from the Leopard disc. I ran disk utility, and repaired the drive and the permission but everything was ok.
I've unplugged any USB device connect but to no avail.
I really don't want to reinstall Leopard again. it took almost 8 hours to install all the applications (such as Logic, Komplete 5, etc) and I had not setup time machine. There are some document files that I would prefer not to loose, but could deal with the loss.
    any suggestions?

Ok, so I reinstalled Leopard, all my documents were in the "Previous Systems" folder, and the applications where present. I went to Software Updates to download all the need updates, which included 10.5.8, itunes, security fixes, etc. It notified my that I would have to restart. I click ok, everything was logged out and the updates started installing. As the computer restarted itself after the updates, i had the same issue again, where it would go to the Apple logo and then restart itself. The second time around, it just froze and the warning "You need to restart your computer" with the power logo in the background came up. So I manually restarted my computer and everything logged in correctly. I restarted it a couple time to see if I could duplicate the errors but everything keeps working properly. Now I'm kind of scare to restart my computer.
Any suggestions as to why this would be happening? Is this most likely a software issue or a hardware issue? This never happened before I formatted last week. The last time I formatted the computer prior to that was less than a year ago.

  • HPE-552SC and ASUS GTX750TI - wont get past BIOS

Hi. My graphiccard delivered with the HPE-552SC has failed and I bought a new ASUS GForce GTX 750TI. After installing it the computer wont go past BIOS. Looking at some posts in support forums, some solutions could be to turn off UEFI - how ever when I press "ESC" on BIOS startup I cant run the application "Run UEFI Application" - see picture below.  BIOS is updated to 7.15. What to do? Best regards,Andree

andrewmorgan98,The OP had a GTX460 160W  (that is what comes in that model unit). The GTX460 is superior to a GTX750ti card in all performance marks.  That is why the GTX660 140W  - 660Ti  150  was suggested. Those two cards have better performance marks that the OP's original GTX 460, and are within the wattage of the original PSU.  Why would the OP want to step down in performance?BTW, the GTX460 required two 6pin PCIE, so the OP has the required Watts and required PCIE plugs. The 660 needs 1, the 660Ti needs 2.

  • HP8540w (540M) ram upgrade, won't boot past bios

I have recently acquired new RAM. First it was 2 x 8 gb but I found out later this is not supported by my specific model.
But now I switched it with 2 x 4gb PC12800 CL11, from a newer hp model and it still won't boot past the BIOS, which has been upgraded to the latest version.
The Bios recognizes the RAM perfectly but still it won't boot into windows. When I see the windows 8.1 logo it gives a sudden shutdown which is followed by a restart. In theory the pc12800 should work, albeit clocked down to 10600 to match the motherboard & processor.
It feels inadequate to have a 3 year old laptop which is not able to go past the 4gb, especially because I bought it since it was the elitebook version and military graded. I wanted to have something future proof, not a machine that needs to be replaced after 3 years. It feels like just threw 150 dollars out of the window.
So I'm hoping that there's another solution that I might have overlooked.
    This question was solved.

Well the recommended memory is PC3-10600 aka DDR3-1333. On some models it actually downclocks to DDR3-1066 speed. I think the memory you have installed from a newer model is just not compatible. If it is DDR3-1600 it might even be low voltage memory which is almost certain not to work.

    Hi there,
    Please can someone help.....
I got a Imac G4 at the weekend for a bargin, but it wont boot up.  When i turn it on it makes the noise and comes up with a grey screen with the apple logo and the loading circle.  It doesnt go past this screen and after about 15 mins turns itself off.
Any ideas how i can get this running again (havent tried anything yet to be honest as im not sure what to do).  I love these machines as i just think they are querky and would love to get it working again to use as my home pc (as even though its old it will still probably be quicker than my old microsoft laptop)
    Thanks!

Did you try a PRAM reset?

    >I can't get the disk drive to open either
If  the optical drive tray cannot be opened, what happens if you hold down the mouse button during startup?
As a brody indicated, a faulty hard drive cannot be ruled out. Instructions for removing this drive can be found in the ifixit.com guides as well.
If you can gain access to the optical drive, the best way forward would be to use an appropriate Mac OS X system CD in an attempt to start from that disc (holding down the C key).
If it is not possible to locate a correct system CD right now, another way could possibly be to try to boot from an Ubuntu CD for PowerPC instead (once again, holding down the C key) just to see whether the computer is capable of booting at all.

  • Cisco UCS C220 MS SFF won't boot past BIOS screen with 2x1.2TB SAS drives installed

We have been running a few of these servers with only a 500GB 6GB SATA 7.2K drive installed with all VM's (Hyper-V) sitting on an attached SAN.
For various reasons we needed some local storage on the server and installed 2 1.2TB SAS drives (10K 2.5"). They hot installed okay but the server had to be brought down to enter the MegaRaid software to configure the RAID.
Unfortunately  with the drives installed, the server won't boot past the initial BIOS screen and certainly doesn't get to the RAID screens.
Does anybody have any idea why this would happen?  Is there some BIOS update required to support these drives and/or MegaRaid software upgrade?
The servers are up and running at the moment so I can't find the version of the RAID software running.
    Thanks
    Larry

    Hi Lauren,
If you don't have a PCI or a mezzanine based controller and you are using the embedded raid controller you need a chip for the embedded raid controller to support SAS drives. By default the embedded controller only supports SATA drives. See page 9 of the link below
Please let me know if you are not using the embedded controller

  • K9N Diamond - Wont boot after BIOS update

Just attempted to update the BIOS on my PC and it now wont boot.  Used LiveUpdate with the Windows flash option (don't have FD drive).  The lights on the D-Bracket 2  get as far as LED 2 Green, 1,3,4 Red.  I have already tried to Clear CMOS with no joy.
Any suggestions on how to proceed much appreciated  - and yes, I already know, I've probably done something stupid
    Thanks
    Grant.

power down PC, remove power cord from the PSU, push several times power button to drain capacitors, then Clear CMOS and leave only one memory stick into DIMM slot close to CPU socket. pull back power cord and try to boot.
in a future do not update the BIOS for no reason....(only becouse its new, only becouse new BIOS maybe got a new logo and e.g...)
Looks like I'm back in business now.  I found similar instructions at this location  http://www.bosamar.com/K9N/trouble.html and followed the First Procedure.
Booted ok with one mem stick, in bios fail safe mode.  I counted 7 short beeps while booting then one long beep.  Not sure if this is ok.  Read about bios beeps here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=82221.0 and the final long beep seems to indicate a pass???.  Anyway, Vista appeared to come up ok and I checked everything in the hardware device manager and all looked fine.
Proceed to reboot with all mem sticks back in place, again same beeps but Vista coming up ok.
Next I switched bios to optimized defaults, but now 6 short beeps - no long beep.  Windows looks ok.  6 beeps appear to indicate a keyboard problem, but kbd seems to work fine???
System looks ok now, but not sure if i should look into those beeps a bit more?  BIOS now at 1.3, should I leave as is or revert to an earlier revision?
One thing I know that I am going to do is to install the FD drive from my old PC
    Thanks for all the help.
BTW, the reason I did the BIOS flash was as a last resort to get my sound to work.  Tried the various creative driver as suggest elsewhere on this forum but without success (as of yet there is no official vista compatible audio driver for my mb from MSI).  The JAUD1 connector looks to be connected as specified in manual (but no audio from either the front nor real panel audio connectors).

  • New Neo 4 Platinum Wont boot past WIN XP :(

Hi, Im hoping someone can help me, I just built my system, its
    MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
    AMD 64 3200+ 939 0.09
    2 x PC4000 Crucial Ballistix (running at 200mhz)
    4 Lighted Fans, Lighted case,
    DVD RW, CD ROM ,
    Floppy with Multimedia,
    XFX Geforce 6600GT 128mb
    Antec Trupower 430w  26a on the 12V, 36A on the +5V and 28A on the +3.3V
Ok, Everything works fine, till WINDOWS boots up ... And it wont boot, before the windows XP loading screen, it stays black, and freezes.. now.. to me it seems like memory/ power supply issue. lowered timings, raised Memory to 2.8v (Crucial suggest this voltage for the ram) ... no go... now my power supply is a good power supply.. but its only 20pin, and the nforce 4 ultra (well MSI) is 24pins ATX 2.0.. mine is a standard ATX12V... its supposed to still work, but Ive had mixed bagss of peopel saying it worked for them, and others that said it didnt.. but with this power supply, shouldnt I have been fine.. PLEASE someone help me, this is eating me alive...

Oh man this sounds familiar., i'm having some of the same probs. I just redid the install of XP Pro sp2 cause i needed the nvidia raid drivers for the NCQ on the Seagate i got.
The first install went fine but i couldn't  oc more then 220fsb with this Corsair pc4400, so
i was like ok let's just get everything running sweet and then play. So after i added the
printer a usb scanner and a usb memcard reader for the camera, it would just hang after the boot logo for xp then it would hang on the Platinum screen sometimes too.
So i played with the voltages which seemed to help for a little bit., i went 3.3%+ on the cpu, 1.5 on the north bridge, and 2.70 on the mem. So i reformatted and used the 6.39 chipset drivers and the latest vid drivers from the manufacturer and everything seemed ok. So i proceeded to add the printer, scanner and card reader again 1 at a time and it seems like it's after the mobo gets warmed up is when it hangs on booting XP after the bootscreen., Cpu temps are at 35C and this mobo in a Cooler Master Cavalier case runs kinda warm for me like at 36 - 37C (According to Cool n Quiet) after it gets all warmed up. So i'm kinda at a loss here too.  I got the same psu as the first poster. Memtest 86 ran for 4hrs, with no errors, and Sandra burned in for a couple hours with no problems.
Oh and the mobo say's the bios is the 1.1 dated 1-12-2005
So i'm hoping it's a bois thing that will be resolved soon, or is it this psu. Seems like some other fellas have had no probs with lesser psu's. Oh and do those 20 to 24 pin adapters make a difference?

  • 2010 MacBook wont boot past grey screen, even after a new hard drive and install CD.

Hey guys, I received a 2010 Macbook last year as a gift (no warranty). It worked fine untill a few days ago. It wouldn't boot past the grey apple logo. I took it in to an Apple store and they said it was a bad HDD. Since I didn't have much stored on it, and I have everything backed up to my desktop, I got a new, larger capacity HDD and replaced it with no issues. I started the Macbook with the OSX Leopard install CD, but it didn't identify the HDD, and now it won't boot past the grey screen.
Any ideas? Is it the motherboard?
    Thanks a lot!

Leopard is done for, call Apple via phone and order the 10.6.3 white retail disks and use those.

  • G5 wont boot past white Apple screen.

To anybody that may have some advice. I hadn't used my power mac in about 4 days then when I turned it on last night it wouldn't boot past the white apple screen. I still have the chime my fans and processor still spin up. I tried resetting the SMU, and I also took out 3rd party ram I had installed and tried booting up to see if that was the problem. I'm prepared to take it to the apple store, I just thought somebody might have some advice before I take it there. So again when I boot up it reaches the white screen with the grey apple and then it just gives me the little grey spinning dial and just spins and spins. Thanks in advance to anybody with any advice.
Dual 2.0 GHz Power mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Well first I booted holding option and it just booted into target disk mode or something like it, a screen that would allow me boot from a different drive if I had one that was formatted with Tiger. So then I rebooted holding >shift and OPtion. And it kernel paniced, it said it didnt have the driver for this version Tiger 7,2 or something along those lines and then it gave me apples screen of death asking me to restart.

  • Strange characters displaying in place of file upload

Has this happened to anyone before?
I've built a form that includes a file upload option, but where the field box and button should be there are funny characters displaying (see screenshot) - Clicking on the characters behaves as it should and an upload dialog pops up. However, in the WYSIWYG editor in BC the box displays as it should.

my laptp doesnt boot past the windows logo, it just shows the windows logo but thats it, it doesnt get past that, I have tried the hard rest, took out the battery and the poer cable, even did the safe mode thing but nothing works...please help me fix this problem

    I'd recommend testing the HDD:
    tap F2 at startup
select either hard drive check or component tests then hard drive
    run a quick test
if this fails then the HDD will need to be replaced, otherwise, I'd suggest a full system recovery:
    tap F11 at startup
    Win8:
    select Troubleshoot
    select Recovery Manager
select system recovery or minimised image recovery
    follow on screen prompts
    Win7:
