Pyro A/V Link

I'm trying to output to VHS using a pyro a/v link. I'm set to View≥Video≥all frames Audio ≥ Default. But no matter what I try, I can't get audio to the tape. I've checked all of my cables and connections. Any ideas? Missing something obvious?

I don't have FCP open right now, but shouldn't the audio be set to "Audio Follows Video" or something of that nature?

  • Unable to capture video using FNC 5.1.1 Quicktime 7.1.2 using Pyro A/V link

Pyro A/V link is the capture device. They say if it works in iMovie HD then it works and they can't help me. It works in iMovie HD but not using Final Cut. I don't know what to do. Do I need quicktime pro? Is there some other driver I need? When I do log and capture it just does the beach ball and then nothing.

I use my camcorder it works with passthru.

  • PYRO A/V Link XP,Vista, & Win7 switch settings + info for use in PE7

I see a lot of confusion regarding capture glitches and switch settings using the PYRO A/V Link. I looked at Canopus and others before I bought this one because it fit my budget. After I bought it I went through the glitches and the Support system of ADS Tech problems that others are experiencing. The settings I use worked on my Vista 32 bit laptop and without a hitch when I got my Windows 7  64 bit desktop using PE7. I"m sure they will work for PE8. I have a ton of VHS tapes that I am working with so my point of reference is for VHS capture. I am also using NTSC.
If you are ordering one what you will be ordering is an API-558-EFS. Or maybe you are using one of the API-550 units. Thjis information should work fine for the 550.   There is NO API-558 unit unless this has changed since I bought mine. The BOX with an API-557, a power cord, and an outdated API-550 user manual is what constitutes an API-558. I know this because an irate ADS Tech rep told me. I emailed to find out why I didn't get an API-558 and that is what I was told. "We no cheat you. You got what you pay for".
I checked for updated drivers and info from ADS Tech and found a REVISION E. You can go online to their website and print it off if you like but I will dialog on this revision in the switch settings. I tried to get the ADS Tech rep to give me a serial number break as to when they changed from the 550 to the 557 units but did not get an answer. I think he said REV.E started with the API-557 but who knows seems to be answer.
Switch settings: I use #1 DOWN  #2 UP #3 DOWN #4 DOWN and here are the reasons why.
The API-550 booklet/user manual shows a few windows versions. I refer to Windows XP because Vista and Win 7 seem to be offshoots of XP.
SWITCH NO. 1   for the API-550 (the API-557 and Vista and Win 7 are not in there) says DOWN for NTSC and Up for PAL . REV E says this has been changed to a black level (Color IRE) down being 0 IRE and up being 7 IRE(default). The ADS Tech rep told me the new unit Automatically detects NTSC or PAL. Do I believe him? Not at this point in time.
SWITCH NO.2 was not changed with REV.E    UP for XP, Vista, and Win 7
SWITCH NO.3 was not changed with REV.E    DOWN for XP, Vista, and Win 7
SWITCH NO.4 was originally (for the API-550) DOWN for LOCKED AUDIO and Up for Unlocked Audio.  REV E. changed this to   Down =12-bit/32kHz and   Up =16-bit/48kHz Audio Sampling Rate
At this point in time I believe I have an API-550 with an API-557 sticker on it. My reasoning is that I import one long stream (60 to 90 minutes) of video  from VHS into PE7 without stopping and after making a DVD where the video and sound separated further and further to about 5 minutes off at the end. I went back to switch #4 LOCKED AUDIO. I also didn't care about black level so I set the #! Switch DOWN fo make sure of  NTSC. Depending on which unit you think you have you can experiment with the first and last switches. It is possible on short video you might not notice the video/audio separation. ALSO PE7 identifies the unit as an API-550 at the top of the capture screen/panel.(Capturing Device)  Whether or not this is the result of windows drivers I don't know.
Connections  I have a VHS/DVD Recorder unit with HDMI and Component Video (3 Video and R & L Audio) output. The PYRO AV link has Component Video IN which I use and the Canopus did not as I recall. I don't know what the other various units have as they were over my spending limit. The quality of Video I get seems really good.. If you are thinking about upgrading your VHS player look on the Back of the unit you think you want to buy and see if it has the Component Video output. The users guide says for DVD player out on my machine but works fine for VHS out. To connect the Pyro to computer you need Firewire as others have said. No USB connection.
One Major Glitch;   Get off the Internet (as others have said) before you start trying to do video. This is even more important with an underpowered computer. My laptop had a switch I would flip to disconnect. My desk top Internet connection has to be disabled. or unplugged from router, or turn router off if you don't need it for other computers. If you don't know how to watch your task manager learn how to bring it up and watch it to see cpu and memory usage and the ammount of processes being used. RESTART the computer maybe more than once. What you will notice will be the number of processes being used will drop and the ammount of memory being used will drop. Restarting seems to dump all the Internet garbage at least till you get back on again and surf around and collect it again. I used to leave mine off the internet for several days and the movie making went smoothly. On my laptop it took up to 10% of the memory and the desktop takes 6+% of 12GB just to be on the internet. I started noticing this early on when things would lock up and I would have to restart anyway.
Starting; After you get off the internet, restart, bring up the task manager, and watch till things settle down to about 0 cpu usage, start PE7 or whatever Video program you want. Watch the task manager again and when everything is down to about 0 cpu usage, start a new project in the welcome screen. Where you want to put your project and how you name it is up to you. I make a new folder and put Everything in there. If you use an external hard drive make sure you dont forget to have it hooked up and on when your video program goes looking for projects the next time you open one up.
After you push ok and the selections come up for what type of video you are working with Click on the  NTSC DV and it will give you a choice of 4:3 or 16:9 Wldescreen. I use the standard 4:3 because all of my footage is old and when playing a DVD later on, the newer TVs seem to be able to widen it out and on older TVs things look normal anyway. I click done and when mainscreen comes up select Get Media. I again select DV  ( Camcorder) and the capture Window opens up.
I fire up my VCR, put a tape in and plug in the PYRO unit. I don't know if that's bad or not, I just got tired of pushing the teeny power button on the unit so I just plug or unplug the PYRO power cord. If the red light is not on the front of the PYRO push the button next to it and hold briefly. When you let go the Red light should be on for Analog. When you hook up one of these to the computer Windows may install a driver. Some firewire devices say you don't need a driver. With the PYRO TURNED ON, if you open up DEVICE MANAGER you will see the Pyro show up under IMAGING Devices. Imaging Devices does not show up in my machine until the PYRO is plugged in. Then when Imaging Devices shows up mine says AD API-550. Click on properties, then driver, and windows shows a driver. Says its an older driver but it works. If you don't see it listed before you try to import video you may have other issues.
Play some video through your VCR and make sure the light stays Red on the Pyro. You should see the Video  in the Capture Window and also hear the audio. I let my VCR do some auto tracking, play and rewind and zero the counter when I reach the point I want to push the capture button. After a few times you can pretty much tell where the tape needs to be at the point you push capture. When capturing it will say capturing and a red line will appear around the window. If you push pause, that segment is pretty much a done deal. If it didn't capture enough video you may have to rewind and capture again and leave the first capture out of your project.
If you have glitches or the capture is screwy you may have to exit the project (save it if you alrerady have existing material in) RESTART and try again, or delete and start over. Once you learn what you want to do you shouldn't have that problem. I also learned early on to NEVER push the close button in the upper RH corner to close PE7 as you would normally do to close a window or program. PE7 didn't like that. Always use File and EXit.
Always wait for PE7 to settle down on each step before you try to do other things or you are going to lock things up depending on how fast your machine is. I have the Task manager to always be on top of other windows (under options at the top of Task Manager window). If it gets in the road I minimize the window and bring it back up whenever I think things are moving slow or I want to check something.
I have used this procedure for other movie programs and capture always works. Hope it works for others using PYRO. Hopefully I was to the point and this makes sense. Bill Hunt suggested I maybe post this to Muvipix but when I visited the Muvipix site there was Pyro stuff all over the place and I wasn't sure where to post. Maybe after he reads this he may not want me to post. Or If he thinks its ok material maybe he can scoot it over to Muvipix for me.  Thanks again. I will watch this post to see if I was unclear on anything. Or if you guys clear up any mistatements you think I made.

    Steve,
I am pleased you thought this was good info. Please use it as you think it will do the most good. The reason I posted it to the main forum is because I am a novice when it comes to forum use. I wasn't aware of the fact there were sub forums (so to speak) until recently. The same for Muvipix.
What I mean is, that when I first found Adobe forums I was only looking at the main forum for answers, as I would guess other novices are doing. I found the PE portion, and that was as far as I went unless you guys had links to other stuff, and even then it didn't dawn on me that there was a Tips & Tricks or hardware sections, etc. I would type in PYRO for example, and if nothing came up in the main forum first to redirect me to something else, I thought that was all there was. Don't know if there are other novices thinking the same thing.
I apologize for my ignorance on posting to Muvipix. The format seems to be different and I found Pyro discussions there which seemed to be in several sub forums? So I posted here first and the only knowledge I have about sending this material to Muvipix (outside of re-typing the whole thing) would be to copy and paste it. (Bring up Muvipix in a separate Internet window along side Adobe and copy/paste). Sounds dumb, but as I said I am still computer illiterate. Also which section of Muvipix would I post it under? I'm pretty sure you guys have a better way of posting the same material in both forums at the same time than copy/paste.        Thanks for the info.

  • Trouble with PYRO a/v link capture device & Tiger

    Hi, all.
    I am new to Tiger.
I was told that this PYRO A/V link was a good product and I bought it. Just ignored that there isn't written TIGER on it!
    What can I do now?
    Mac just doesn't see it!
    Help, please!

On the box it reads: os9 osX ... panther
By the way, I had a chance to make some tests, and I discovered that the Firewire port works (Phew!), I connected an Ipod to it, and it's OK.
I have been to the shop and they changed the PYRO, just to be sure, but the effect is the same.
Also, a previous poster said that he is OK with PYRO and Tiger...
Maybe he upgraded from Panther so he has got the 'old' firewire drivers...

  • Using PYRO A/V Link

I have a FW800 Dual 1.25GHz. I'm thinking about buying a Pyro A/V Link to import some analogue video. Is there anything I should do or know before I make this purchase? Is this a good product? Is this a good way to import video? Both API-557 and API-558 are available at different places. Is one substantially better than the other? I do like the FireWire interface. I would appreciate any advise anyone can supply.
    Dual 1.25 FW800 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I use my camcorder it works with passthru.

  • Is Pyro A/V Link still supported in PE10?

I have an old Pyro A/V Link device that is not being recognized by Premiere Elements 10. I hooked the Pyro up to a Mac and iMovie sees it fine. Has support for this device been dropped? It is not on the list of supported devices, but I didn't see any capture devices listed.
    Thanks.
    Rich

    Welcome to the forum.
I do not use the Pyro, but if the Mac is seeing it over FireWire, PrE should see it too. There are many Pyro users on the Muvipix forums, and I know that there are some DIP switches, that need to be set. I would post over there, and someone with that unit on a Mac will likely be able to tell you the exact switch settings that you need.
    Good luck,

  • Imac won't recognize Pyro A/V converter box

I can't seem to get my G-4 imac to recognize my Pyro A/V convertor box to use for importing analog video. I've tried resetting power, unplugging cables, etc. I'm pretty new to mac, so could someone help me with this?

I have same problem on G5 Dual. Used to work with Panther. Have your found any solution yet?
I have a Sony 8mm 72X camcorder ( with standard RCA output cables to an ADS Pyro A/V Link API -550 rev B converter box. I connect with firewire 400 to front of Mac G5 Dual with Tiger OS 10.4.7.
I also upgraded to iLife 6 recently
It used to work with Panther and iLife 4.
Now I cannot get iMovie HD to see the camcorder. Tried all the tips of restarting, unhooking etc. Neither does Final Express 5 or Premier 6 (Classic).
Looked at ADS help pages-not much help, but I downloaded and installed FireWire SDK version 19 for Mac OS X! No change.
    Any suggestions?

  • Help ADS Pyro A/V stops working on iMovie HD, iMac ?

In December 2006 I purchased an ASD Tech Pyro A/V Link which is supposed to enable the 2 way transfer of analog VHS videos to digital and vice vera (iMac 2 GHz, iMac 2gBG memory, 240 gig HD running Mac )S 10.4.8.
It worked for three weeks then became very erratic then stopped altogether.
When I try to grab a VHS video with iMovie HD 5.0.2 (111) usually nothing happens except a few flickering bars on a black screen. I have tried changing the iMovie preferences for Import and Playback.
When I try sharing a digital video to the VHS recorder, again nothing happens.
I have (repeatedly) repaired permissions, reinstalled Quicktime, fiddled with the connections. I contacted ASD who recommended I instal via Apple :-
    ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/XFireWireSDK16.dmg.bin
when that didnt work I tried thier second idea:-
    ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/XFireWireSDK19.dmg.bin
These were installed in a Developer's Folder - but didn't make any difference, So I deleted the Developer's Folder, not knowing what else to do.
My iMac has been downloading updates for a while now, so I don't know what has been changed in the System folder.
This is what the iMac System Profiler reports:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
    API-550:
    Manufacturer: ADS
    Model: 0x353530
    GUID: 0x50C5004E545301
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
    Sub-units:
    PYRO-AV-Link Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x10001
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA02D
I am about to return the A/V Link, but wondered if you can help with this matter.
    Thank you for any suggestions.

    Mike
"Capture: I can see the video that is playing on the DVD player even though "no communication" is at the bottom of the screen When the NOW button is pushed, the screen darkens and a message appears stating the I need to restart the computer. The computer hangs. After restart the problems repeats."
This sounds like a Kernell Panic. Usually it's hardware related. Double check all the cables and sockets. Sounds like the Pyro may be loosing power and the Mac can't find it during operation, that's a guess though.
The other question you have could be for the same reason or there are Timecode breaks on the tape.

  • Importing xbox 360 video clips into imovie 6.0.3sk

Hi, I have an xbox 360 that I would like to import some video clips off of onto my computer using imovie. I have a Powermac G4 with a dual 1.4 ghz cpu, 2 GB of RAM, and lots of HD disk space. I am using an ADS Pyro A/V link for capturing video. I have used this many times in imovie to capture video directly from a TV, VCR, DVD player, etc. For some reason when I hook up the cable from the xbox 360 to the Pyro (using either component connection or composite/RCA connection) and hit play in imovie to preview what's being converted, it can't process it. Sometimes it will show a bunch of pixelated squares, sometimes it won't show anything. Every once in a while it can process the sound, otherwise it doesn't show anything. After a few times, it says the pyro has been disconnected, although it obviously hasn't been. I've also tried directly importing without previewing it during the import, but that doesn't work either. I'm not sure if I need to set something a certain way? But I know you can import from the 360 because there are obviously many video clips floating around the internet taken straight from the xbox.
Anybody know anything about this or have any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Nevermind...I figured it out. There is a little button on the video cable that toggles HDTV on or off. Apparently it has to be off. So if anyone else has this problem, hopefully they can learn from my mistake.

  • S-Video or Composite video input

I need to connect a camcorder to my iMac but it has no digital output. Only s-video (which I prefer) and composite.
I know there exists converters which can convert this stuff to USB or Firewire but the ones I found are really expensive. $300-$500
I need it to be less than $100.
I looked for tv tuners and they seem to cost a lot less. But can anyone here suggest one that will work well with this ol' iMac?

    Hi,
First, if you are using Quicktime or iMovie to import video, you need firewire, USB won't do it.
My own search for such a converter ended with the ADS-Technology ADPYROAVL Pyro A/V Link, D-A Media Converter, $149.95 at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/. Shipping added 6.90 to that.
Having been using it for 2 or 3 weeks now, I'd say I made a pretty good choice, certainly for my main use, which is conversion of old VHS tapes. It can also export video from the computer onto an analog tape.
    Hope this helps.

  • High school basketball games highlight dvd help needed.

Problem: FCE 3.5 stops capturing at every time break.
Background: First of all I don't know much about FCE as it is my sons program and I am trying to help him out. Please bare with me if I don't get the terminology correct.
He is capturing basketball games recorded from a Panasonic model VDR-D210 camcorder that uses mini dvd discs. Because there is no firewire out port on this camera he is capturing thru a Pyro a/v Link analog to DV video converter, then firewire out to his intel imac running 10.4.11.
FCE 3.5 is capturing(video only no audio needed) thru this converter, but stops at every camera time break. He has about 20 games to go and it would be nice to be able to get the whole game without it stopping every minute or two.
He is volunteering to do this project for them but at this rate it will take forever. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim

    Hi Jim
DVD camcorders are not the easiest source for video editing. Since you are using an analog to digital converter, you need to change your FCE easy setup. In FCE open the drop down menu "Final Cut HD" > easy set up > DV -converter DV NTSC or DV - converter DV PAL depending on where in the world you are. > set up.
That should take care of your problem. FCE is a complex program. You'll face a steep learning curve to get your video done, especially since it sounds like you're under time constraints. You may be better off using iMovie 6. It's less complicated and is great for editing DV. You can create something that's simple or complicated. And, you'll face less of a learning curve.
If you already own imovie 8, you can download imovie 6 for free here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Good luck. Let us know how your project turns out.

  • How can I input data from dvd and VHS to iMovie 6?

I am trying to copy excerpts from a dvd that I recorded from a commercial dvd into iMovie for inclusion in a power point presentation. With the dvd in my super drive and using the help menu procecure of 1. Choose File >Import 2. Select the file you want to import 3. Click Open. When I select the dvd icon on my desktop and click Open, I ged a drop down window for importing files for about 20 seconds, but I never have any files presented in the clips squares on iMovie. I get the same results if I drag the dvd icon to the "drag clips her to build your project" strip. Same thing if I drag the icon to the clips squares. However, I never get any data presented in the areas and the play, reverse, review clips buttons. Same thing happens if I try to transfer the file on the dvd (VIDEO_TS) to the same locations. If I try to transfer the seven sub files individually, I get--The file could not be imported: The file “Hard Drive/Volumes/B04101500/VIDEO_TS/VTS_011.VOB” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048--. In all these situations there is no data presented in clips or display, but a gray clip area will go blank. This dvd is about 20 minutes in length and is not broken down into scenes in a menu. I recently upgraded to iMovie 6, so I reloaded the program to no avail. I have previously used iMovie 5, but it will not load as long as '6 is loaded.
Since I also have this data on a VHS tape, I tried to recode it through an ADS Tech Pyro A/V Link converter to enter it into iMovie. In the past this was a simple procedure--connect a VCR player to the converter, connect the converter to the firewire port on the iMac, the system profiler automatically recognizes the converter, start iMovie, then Play on the VCR, and press Import on the File menu. That starts the recording in the past. Now I get another drop down window with an "open" button. However, since there is no software for the Mac with the Pyro A/V, there is nothing to open. Has iMovie 6 made these procedures obsolete?? They have worked in the past.

Hi LesToile - welcome to the forum!
It is not possible to directly import material from a DVD as you are attempting. DVD is MPEG format - iMovie is incompatible with this. In order to use it, you must firstly convert it to DV format. Have a look here:

I have no knowledge of your A/V Link Converter, but if you have a vidcam you can use it to record from VHS to DV tape, and thence into iMovie (there are now problems with the alternative 'pass-through' method using the camera).

  • Final Cut Pro HD wont output to an external monitor?

I,m trying to monitor my work on the projector it will be presented on. My camera wont recognize the outputted PAL signal although I can import material from the camera. It worked very briefly then stopped so I've bought a Pyro A/V Link to stand in for the camera but the most I can acheive is an occasional single image and audio. This is VERY frustrating, I need to be able to see what I'm making. I've tried resetting the User Preferences. Please, please help.

  • Connecting Digital Converter to Firewire Port

I have an analog to digital converter (Pyro A/V Link) that I have been using to preview my video from Final Cut Pro on my television. I now want to set this up to convert some analog tapes and now my computer just randomly doesn't identify my converter when it is plugged into my firewire port. Now, when I plug it in to the computer and go to system profiler, I get a message that says it cannot read my firewire drives at all. When I unplug it, the profiler identifies my external hard drive. Can anyone please tell me what I need to do?
Note: The only change from before is I upgraded to the new Mac operating system, installed my Ram, and installed a newer version of Final Cut.
Thank you to the great person that may help me...I NEED IT!

I just switched the cables between the hard drive and the converter and now they are working. Now, just to figure out how to get this beta player footage to my computer...its a never ending battle.
I don't know if switching the cables worked or if it was something else...I guess I'll never know.
    Thank you!
