Q about Automatically Downloading Podcasts

Hi. I have an Imac running OS X 10.5.2. I also have the latest version
of Itunes, 7.6.2.
I just discovered podcasts tonight and I subscribed to a few of them. I
then went to Itunes Preferences and to the Podcasts section to set
Itunes to look for new episodes on a daily basis.
My problem is that Itunes doesn't seem to let me choose a specific time
for downloading the daily podcasts. I would like to set Itunes so that
it downloads the podcasts early in the morning, around 2AM or 3AM, when
I'm asleep and not using my computer.
However, when I select the "Every day' from the "Check for new
episodes", it shows that the next time it will check for new episodes is
"Tomorrow, 9:50 PM." I don't know how it's picking 9:50PM as the time
to checking podcasts. Like I said, I'd like to change the time to 2AM
or 3AM. I browsed through the Itunes Help and I couldn't find an answer
to my question.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

The 'daily' check always means 24 hours from that last time iTunes checked for podcasts. In other words, if you did a manual check at 2 a.m. then iTunes would perform the next automated check at 2 a.m. the next day.

  • Automatically downloading podcasts - issue!

Ok, I have had an unfortunate situation.
I only have 5 gig on my peak d/l from my new isp of a week.
I have SERVERAL podcasts that I download each week.
I have NO internet service unless I use the off peak as itunes downloaded all my podcasts without me knowind - taking the bandwith.
How can I stop this and manually download when I want??
    Regards,
    Chris

Hi - I have an Airport Express 'n' version. Its connected to my DSL modem via an ethernet cable and to my stereo via cable as well. When I do stream music through it via itunes, it does cut out fairly frequently. I think this is happening when iTunes is automatically downloading podcasts. Is this an issue with the capacity of the Express? Or the capacity of my laptop (its a 2007 basic white Macbook)? Or even my cable modem?
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
It's probably related to the quality of the Wi-Fi signal between your MacBook and AirPort Express. Launch AirPort Utility, invoke "manual setup" mode, pull down the Base Station menu and select the "Logs & Statistics" item, then select the "Wireless Clients" tab. That will show you information about that connection, including whether the times when the signal cuts out correspond to drops in the signal strength.

  • Automatically download podcasts directly to iPod?

I'm trying to find a way to have my iPod automatically check for a new podcast (via my home WiFi), download new content, and shut itself off again. Does anyone know of something like this?
The reason I want this is that I would like to keep my iPod in my car's glove box connected via USB. When I drive to work in the morning, I want to listen to the most recent CNET podcast. Currently, I have to manually remove it from the glove box, navigate to the podcast page, select download on the latest one, and wait 4 minutes while it downloads. I want this to be automatic. Ideas?

    I would love this too.

  • Automatic download of new issues in Newsstand

    Hi,
I recieved a notice, on the iPad, that a new issue of Wired was available. I went into the Newsstand and was surprised that I had to iniated the download I thought Newsstand automatically updates them in the background. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Funny but I just received this email from Wired that had a highlighted section about automatic downloads.
The only problem is that when you go into the App Store tab there are two interfaces for Automatic Downloads. There’s one under Automatic Download for all Apps and a specific one for Wired magazine to automatically download new content when on Wi-Fi.
So the question I’m facing is, do I need to have Automatic Downloads for all Apps on as well. Unfortunately the notification from Wired is a bit ambiguous.

  • Automatic download issues

I am having major difficulties getting iTunes purchases to automatically download to my iPod touch or iMac.  I've checked to make sure all settings are correct and then made a few purchases on each device.  For example, I click the following on my iPod:
    1. iTunes
    2. Purchased
    3. Music
    4. "Not On This iPod"
The result is a message that says all my available music has already been downloded.  However, this is not accurate; I have three purchases on my iMac waiting to transfer over.  I also have a purchase on my iPod waiting to reach my iMac, but again, to no avail.
To the best of my knowledge I have set everything up properly, however I'm sure it's possible I'm missing something.  Anyone with similar issues who has found a resolution, please share!
iCloud seems like a great idea but of course, only if it works!  Contacts and calendars are syncing up just fine, now I just have to get my music to do the same.
    Thank you kindly in advance.

I can no longer manually select podcast episodes to download. It automatically downloads the most recent. I have been downloading a few past episodes at a time due to limited memory of my Shuffle. Is there a work-around for this?

Similar problem here. My Ical refuses to edit or delete events. Viewing is possible, though sometimes the whole screen turns grey. Adding new events from mail is still possible. The task-pane completely disappeared. My local apple technic-centre messed about with disk utility for a bit and than told me to reinstall leopard. I could of course do that, but it seems to me that reinstalling Leopard just to fix iCal events is a bit invasive.
I tried also tried removing everything, installing a new copy of iCal from the leopard-cd, software updates, all to no avail.
At the moment I'm open to all suggestions that do not include a complete leopard reinstall.

  • How do I download podcasts automatically?

For some reason my podcasts don't download automatically, although I have set them to download automatically.  Do I have to have the Podcast app open on top or can it be running in the back?

    Hello haackeg,
It sounds like your Podcasts app is downloading episodes automatically and you would like to stop that. This function is called Auto Download and is a setting you can turn off in the Podcasts app itself:
    Use Auto Download
With Auto Download, you can automatically download new podcast episodes in the background as they become available:
After you subscribe to a podcast, navigate to My Podcasts.
Tap the podcast to bring up the podcast details.
    Tap Settings > Auto-Downloads.
From: iOS: About the Podcasts app for iOS
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5295
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • How do I stop podcasts from automatically downloading?

I've tried everything including changing the settings for my entire library to just refresh the feeds, but iTunes is still automatically downloading episodes.
What is worse though, is many times its going back into certain feeds to download older, and usually years old, episodes, so that obviously clogs up memory and CPU space on my computer, with no seemingly end in site when dealing with podcasts that have episode numbers in the hundreds and for some reason the feed is downloading dozens of them from several years ago.
I don't understand that at all, in terms of why iTunes refreshing a feed would go back and download episodes going way back in the feed's history as opposed to the latest one, or the ones that showed up, since the last time the feed was refreshed, with the proper later dates, but I'd just want to stop the automatic process and just simply have all the feeds refreshed so I can pick and choose what I want to download, instead of all at once.  What am I doing wrong?

Go to iTunes > Preferences > Store and Uncheck the option to Sync podcast subscriptions, settings and stations, then set up each machine as you want it.

  • Is there any way to get rid of this stupid feature in iTunes for Windows? You've subscribed to a podcast but have more than five unplayed episodes. iTunes will stop automatically downloading newer episodes.

s there any way to get rid of this stupid feature in iTunes for Windows?
You've subscribed to a podcast but have more than five unplayed episodes. iTunes will stop automatically downloading newer episodes. You may get the following message:
iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?
You can click Yes to continue downloading additional episodes. Or you can just listen to any part of any episode and a new episode will download at the next update.

I believe that feature was added in order to reduce wasted costs to the Podcaster.
Podcasts incur costs - that have to be paid for, by someone. That cost will be the cost of hosting the Podcast on a server somewhere and more crucially (with regard to your point), the cost of the Podcast being downloaded to your computer. Every download costs the Podcaster money (typically, charged by bytes downloaded).
If that Podcaster pays for the whole thing personally, obviously they want to keep down any unnecessary cost to themselves. If the Podcaster is earning money for his or her Podcast (typically from advertising within the programme) then obviously, the advertiser only wants to pay for advertisements heard by listeners. So a download, not heard by the downloader, is waste of the Podcaster's money or no payment from the advertiser.
My own experience is that I only have to resume downloading once per programme. I'm usually several episodes behind on two different Podcasts that I follow, but I do not recall having to repeat the resume Podcast after that first time.

  • Podcast not automatically downloading for subscribers.

Subscribers to our podcast have reported that the new episodes do not automatically download for them. I have no idea why. In the iTunes store the podcast seems to be working properly. All episodes are there and the most recent one can be played or downloaded directly from the store. But something seems to be broken with subscriptions and automatic downloads.
I tried to subscribe myself before submitting this question and didn't seem to be able to get any file to download.
The name of the podcast is Church of the Cross Boston.
I searched this forum for an answer and wasn't able to find one that matched this particular problem. Any help would be appreciated. I'm happy to provide more info if needed.

Please always include the URLs of your Store page and feed to save me having to search for them. For references, your Store page is at
    https://itunes.apple.com/podcast/church-of-the-cross/id317330237
and your feed is at http://www.cotcboston.org/Podcast.xml
You have introduced a fatal error into your feed which is rendering it unreadable. The title for the entry of 24 November 2013 is given as
    <title>Love's Durability & Permanence</title>
You cannot have an ampersand ('&') by itself in a feed because in XML it signifies the beginning of a code sequence; as this is never completed it blocks everything afterwards in the feed, and as this includes the closing tags it blocks the opening tags too.
You must replace the ampersand with either the word 'and' or the code

  • Apple TV 2.0 Podcast Automatic Download

Has anyone found away to automatically download the latest versions of selected PodCasts? I'd like to stop syncing my podcasts from my iTunes PC and just use the Apple TV to manage my video podcasts.
Apple, PLEASE add this feature to the next version of Apple TV firmware. Thanks...

We're talking subscribing to Podcasts and TV Shows directly from Apple TV. This has nothing to do with iTunes in your computer

  • My iTunes is not downloading podcasts automatically.

Only one of my podcasts is not updating and I can't figure out why. It is Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram daily podcast. I have to manually search the iTunes store to download it but it doesn't give a brief synopsis like all the others. I have already sent an email to Living on the Edge to see if there is any reason from their end. Does anyone have a solution for this?

In the latest version of iTunes (v12), you might see an exclamation point near the podcast. This might mean that iTunes has decided you have not listened to the podcast recently and has stopped downloading podcasts automatically. The way around this is to view the podcasts in the "Podcasts" mode, not the episode list mode. (See right hand of iTunes for how to list podcasts, above the list).
Once viewed in Podcast mode, you will see the exclamation point again and you can see the problem.
This feature is terrible for several reasons.
    1) It's wrong. I have been listening to the podcast on my shuffle. Are shuffles no longer supported?
    2) You have no clue what the exclamation point means in list mode. No tool tip, etc.
    3) It should bring a pop-up stating the issue when you try to refresh said podcast automatically. If I am trying to refresh a podcast, I want to download it. Shouldn't the program tell me at that point that it is not downloading podcasts?
This is user interface "fail" of major proportions. The iTunes team needs a refresh!

  • What's that message about not being able to do automatic downloads if I download purchased music from an old account?

I wanted to download music to my iPad from an old iTunes account so I logged of my current account and logged in with the old one. I went to the purchased section and hit download on a song and when I did, I received a warning that my iPad was linked to another account (my new account) and that if I downloaded the files I wouldn't be able to do automatic downloads for 90 days.
I don't quite understand what that is about.
Can anybody tell me what will actually happen if I DO download music from my old iTunes account and then switch back to my new account?
How else can I download all my old purchases without affecting my new account?
What does that warning actually mean?
I don't have a computer so that rules out uploading from a PC or Mac.
    Thanks a lot!

Well I tried your suggestion in the Permissions screen for Components There isn't an Owner Tab.  I made the suggested changes but I still got the error.
    The Owner data is:
So what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks.

  • Possible to automatically download specific episodes from subscribed podcast?

I'm wondering if it's at all possible to automatically download only specific episodes in a subscribed podcast without downloading any of the other episodes.
IE: I subscribe to G4TV.com Web Shows Podcast specifically to watch the MMO Report episodes. I have no interest in any of the other episodes that form part of the podcast so I don't want to waste precious bandwidth downloading them automatically. Is there any way to setup a smart way to download only episodes with specific words or phrases in the title in the subscribed podcast? I love the auto download option of podcasts so I don't really want to have to manually go and check for new episodes to download.

No, there is no ftp server in the TC so it won't work.. upload the file to service. There are tons of places on the web whereby you can share a few files.. google sites excellent.
