Q: HD players and carving up large files

Greetings,
First of all, this is what I'm using:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
8 gigs of RAM
External 2TB drive, internal 1TB drive (for media only)
Windows Vista, 64-bit
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4
First question, what is a good media player to play back MTS and M2TS files? I know there are several of them that come recommended on various sites, but I'm interested in knowing which ones to trust, which ones have the best options, and which ones some of you have had good luck with.
But my biggest problem is that a recent client gave me some very large files with which to work, and it's been like trying to shove an elephant through a drinking straw. They gave me an external hard drive with a ton of AVCHD footage on it (1440 x 1080, 29.97). No problem...I thought. They wanted to use the footage for a time lapse sequence of a big construction job of a unique dome they're building. The way they had described it to me, they were going to record the site over a long period of time, programming the camera to capture a few seconds every few hours.
Well, someone screwed the pooch. The camera was turned on almost every day, but they let the thing run all day! So, some of these files are over 30 gigs, and it's been murder trying to import them and get them to play. As I expected, it was pointless to try to use the external hard drive as a source since it's not even firewire but USB, and getting the files to play back in PP was not a good experience; I could practically hear the drive choking to death. But even when I transferred a couple of large files to my internal terabyte, they still played back terribly in PP, in both the viewer and on the timeline. When I moved the sequence marker, it would hang up the system for long periods of time, and then playback was choppy at best.
I imagine it could be processor speed - or lack thereof. I know a quad would be better, but I've played back smaller MTS files with no problem, and right now getting more processor speed isn't an option - if that's even the main problem. The thing that adds insult to injury is that this project is going to mix SD (DVCAM, I think) with this AVCHD, so I don't even think shooting the timelapse stuff in HD was even necessary (they had a small Sony camera they wanted to use). I know I could convert the m2ts files to AVIs or something like that, but that would take forever since I'm going to need to use a little chunk of each file (to edit the time lapse).
So, my second question is, is it possible to carve up these large files somehow, so that I can import smaller files into PP and use the (source) viewer in PP to scan the footage more easily? Like I said, it's been difficult to scan a 7-hour, 35 gig clip without missing something and/or hanging up the system. I don't have that problem with smaller source files. Unfortunately, I have a feeling carving up these m2ts isn't possible without converting the files to another format....?
I don't know, maybe it isn't the files and it has something else to do with my computer. But I've been editing SD without much trouble at all, and also some HD (with smaller files), so something tells me these files are just too big. My drive is 7200 rpm, and I don't have anything else on this computer except some other Adobe stuff (PowerPoint, Reader; the "garbage" is minimal. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Paul

I would be declining to take on this project on the basis of what you have told us about what you
have been supplied with...unless they are prepared to acknowledge the scale of the task (problem) and pay on an hourly basis.
Its going to take a lot of time!

  • Excel 2010 Freezes while saving and computing when large files are opened.

    Hi
The issue with with MS Office Excel 2010, where in if i open big files like greater than 40 or 50 mb file while saving or computing it takes lot of time
like say 10 to 15 seconds and some times more also.
This file i am referring is having around 5,000 row data and with around 15 sheets and has formula's and functions built into it.
As and when i try to delete or update one of the same the status bar show processing message and starts processing from 0 to 100% this takes
lot of time and during i feel my excel is frozen or system hanged kind of situation.
The query is what is the limitation of file size which can be opened in Excel 2010 where i can work with the same without any freeze or hanging.
need the same for Excel 2007 and 2013 versions also.
Note : other office products like work, power point works fine without any issue.

    Hi,
I didn't find the exact size of the limitation of size for Excel 2010, but as for Excel 2013, I can tell you this:
32-bit environment is subject to 2 gigabytes (GB) of virtual address space, shared by Excel, the workbook, and add-ins that run in the same process. A data model’s share of the address space might run up to 500 – 700 megabytes (MB), but could be less if
other data models and add-ins are loaded.
64-bit environment imposes no hard limits on file size. Workbook size is limited only by available memory and system resources.
I think the articles below will be very helpful to you:

Anyway, many factors may cause the freeze, such as hardware and add-ins, you may try starting Excel in Safe Mode to determine if it's add-ins related:
Press Win + R and type “excel /safe” in the blank box, then press Enter.
If there’s no problem in Safe Mode, disable the suspicious add-ins to verify which add-ins caused this issue.

  • Airport Extreme, Airdisk, and Vista - large file problem with a twist

    Hi all,
I'm having a problem moving large-ish files to an external drive attached to my Airport Extreme SOMETIMES. Let me explain.
My system - Macbook Pro, 4gb ram, 10gb free HD space on macbook, running latest updates for mac and vista, external hard drive on AE is an internal WD in an enclosure w/ 25gb free (its formatted for pc, but I've used it directly connected to multiple computers, mac and pc, without fail), AE is using firmware 7.3.2, and im only allowing 802.11n. The problem occurs on the Vista side - havent checked the mac side yet.
The Good - I have bit torrents set up, using utorrent, to automatically copy files over to my airdisk once they've completed. This works flawlessly. If i connect the hard drive directly to my laptop (macbook running bootcamp w/ vista, all updates applied), large files copy over without a hitch as well.
The Bad - For the past couple weeks (could be longer, but I've just noticed it recently being a problem - is that a firmware problem clue?) If i download the files to my Vista desktop and copy them over manually, the copy just sits for a while and eventually fails with a "try again" error. If i try to copy any file over 300mb, the same error occurs.
What I've tried - well, not a lot. The first thing i did was to make sure my hard drive was error free, and worked when physically connected - it is and it did. I've read a few posts about formatting the drive for mac, but this really isnt a good option for me since all of my music is on this drive, and itunes pulls from it (which also works without a problem). I do however get the hang in itunes if i try to import large files (movies). I've also read about trying to go back to an earlier AE firmware, but the posts were outdated. I can try the mac side and see if large files move over, but again, i prefer to do this in windows vista.
this is my first post, so im sure im leaving out vital info. If anyone wants to take a stab at helping, I'd love to discuss. Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
Just noticed the other day that I am having the same problem. I have two Vista machines attached to TC w/ a Western Digital 500 gig USB'd. I can write to the TC (any file size) with no problem, however I cannot write larger files to my attached WD drive. I can write smaller folders of music and such, but I cannot back up larger video files. Yet, if I directly attach the drive to my laptop I can copy over the files, no problem. I could not find any setting in the Airport Utility with regards to file size limits or anything of the like. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

  • Unable to transfer large files from MB to External HDs

    Hi,
This may be an unusual one. My 1st edition Macbook won't let me transfer large files to my external hard-drives, either by USB, Ethernet or wirelessly through my home wi-fi network.
I've started video editing so I'm importing DVcam tapes through firewire from the camera. A full DV tape translates to about 8-12gb I think.
Using iMovie and saving the import to my Freecom 3.5inch network harddrive vis USB or ethernet, it fails saying 'Unexpected error, error code 1309'.
When I try quicktime pro instead to import the tape to the external HD, I get 'Operation could not be completed, An attempt to add a resource to the file failed'. This happens too with my WD 2.5inch external drive.
However, there is no such problem when I import to the MB's internal harddrive. When I then try and shift the large file off the laptop to an external drive, via USB, ethernet of wirelessly, for editing and save keeping, it fails half way through.
I have the same problem when I try back-up my 17gb virtual windows machine I use with VMware fusion off the laptop to an external drive.
I am currently burning an 18gb iMovie project from the MB's internal HD, over 5 DVDs using Toast's disc-spanning and will reimport them to the external, which is really time consuming.
Also to note, Final Cut Express doesn't have these problems as it seems to break up what would be an 18gb movie file into several smaller files, which my MB is quiet happy to let go onto an external drive. However, the problem re-emerges on Final Cut Ex when I try and import a HDV tape. Possibly FCE isn't breaking them up into small enough pieces for my MB to handle?
Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? Or does this mean a new laptop?

I'm a bit late to the party, but specifically there's a 4GB file size limit in the FAT32 format that is standard on many external hard drives. I've run across this problem before, and usually it copies over most of the file and then quits when it reaches the limit.

  • Partition External HD to store large files

Can I partition my WD My Book for Mac external hard drive so that I can place large files such as movies from my Macbook Pro, to the newly created partiton on the external HD, then delete it off my MacBook Pro? I assume I would need to format it Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?  Also, I use time machine to backup the Macbook Pro to the external HD, so I have not downloaded the WD Smartware software.  Without downloading WD's software, can I manually place and retrieve the large files using the Macbook Pro's Finder I'm assumiung? And how difficult would it be?
    Thanks in advance,
    AndrewMx17

So I was able to shrink my partition on the exteral HD that I was using Time Machine to backup to so I wouldn't lose my backup, and create another partiton for my large files I would like to store, then use Finder to place and retrieve files.  One thing I did encounter was the partition I was using to backup the Macbook was found to be corrupt but the 'First Aid' tool in Disk Utility was able to fix it so I could partition the drive.

  • FTP Sender Adapter with EOIO for Large files

    Hi Experts,
I am Using XI 3.0 version,
My scenario is File->XI->FIle, I need to pick the files from FTP Server , there are around 50 files in it each of 10 MB Size.
So i have to pick the files from FTP folder in the same order as they put into folder , i,e.., FIFO.
So in Sender FTP Comm channel , i am Specifying
    Qos = EOIO
    queue name =  ACCOUNT
whether the files will be picked in FIFO into the queue XBTO_ACCOUNT?
      So my question is,
what is the procedure to specify the parameters so that it will process in FIFO?
What would be the BEST PRACTICE to acheive it for better performance point of view.
    Thanks
    Sai.

    Hi spantaleoni ,
I want to process the files using FTP protocol which should be in FIFO ,
ie.., Files placed first in a folder should be picked up first and remaining one next and so on.
So if i use FTP ,
Then to process the files in sequence i.e, FIFO
    the processing parameters
    Qos= EOIO
    Queue name = ACCOUNT
would process the files in FIFO.
and to process large files (10MB size) what would be the best  Polling interval secs.
    Thanks,
    Sai

  • Multiple files as book vs. single large file

I am beginning two projects with a coworker. Both are multi-page publications (large newsletter and an annual report). We've run into the problem before of both needing to be in the same file at the same time and having to go back and forth opening and closing the files over and over, which quickly becomes a huge hassle. We don't have InCopy or any of the software that would allow us to both work on the same file.
So my question is should I create a file for each spread in the publications and then compile them together in a master ID file as a "book" or just deal with it and create two larger files?

I do a magazine every two months
And every article is a separate file and compiled in a book.
I design, and someone else edits.
So I'm all for the Book, it really works.

  • How do I convert a large file which show error after is converting?

I've tried to export a PDF to Excel and  word file and have not been able, show error after downloading and show converting in progress
File is les 100MB and 936 pages

    Hi Large Files to Convert,
Even when a PDF file is under the 100-MB file size limit, it could be that the large number of pages is adding a level of complexity that causes the ExportPDF service to timeout before it can finish the conversion.
If the PDF file wasn't created from a scanned document, you can simplify the conversion somewhat by disabling OCR as described in this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (O... | Adobe Community
Otherwise, you might want to consider using a free trial of Acrobat to convert that large file. For more information, see www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.

  • E1000 wifi dead whenever I copy a large file between 2 PC's

Whenever I try to copy a large file (eg. 200 MB) from one PC to another (both connected wirelessly to the Linksys E1000 router), the wifi on the router dies.  I can see the wifi indicator light on the router go off, and my PC's lose their connection (of course).
I understand that the E1000 is a low-end router so if it copies really slowly I can accept it.  But how can the wifi just die out like that?  Is there something I didn't setup properly?
btw, this issue is present even after I upgraded to the latest firmware (2.1.02 build 5).
    Would greatly appreciate any advice.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your reply.
    1.  Problem not due to firmware upgrade.  The problem existed before the firmware upgrade, and persist after the upgrade. But yes, I did power off and power on my router again.
    2. I followed some instructions on this forum to chnage the following settings:
    Channel: 11
    MTU: 1340
    Beacon: 75
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2304
    RTS: 2304
And strangely enough, it works now!
    3.  This morning, upon seeing your reply, I decided to do some investigation to see which setting did the trick. I modified each setting back to the default, one by one, and tested the large file copy each time I revert something back to default.
Surprisingly, the file copy operation was successful throughout the tests, even upon reverting all settings back to default.
So, what is the "problem" with this router? I had problems for 1 month with the default settings, and then suddenly all problems disappear?

  • Should 2GB Video Files be Combined into Full-Length Larger Files Before Editing in PP CS 5.5?

I shoot with a Canon Vixia HF S21.
It creates AVCHD files on the came, and when I transfer them off the camera, longer takes come off in 2GB segments.
Sometimes I have long takes, 30-60 minutes for example, and one take will be 4-8 2GB files.
The Canon export utility software will automatically combine these files into a larger complete single file of the single take.
I am wondering if this is a good idea or a bad idea to combine these files with the Canon Utility, and edit in PP CS5.5 using the single, larger 8-12GB raw source video file?
What I like about letting the Canon combine the files, is I know I won't make any mistakes in "splicing" the files together.
What I don't like is now I have added double the amount of raw video storage space I am using up on my system.
Perhaps it doesn't matter whether I use the single larger combined file vs. the individual 2GB files... I just don't know.
Is there any downside to using the larger file?
Is it better to use the smaller files?

Read http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1015001?tstart=0 to learn WHY the files must be combined... either by the Canon software, or by PPro by importing from the complete folder that you copy from camera to hard drive
I don't understand "double the amount of raw video storage space"
Does that mean you have BOTH one large file AND the individual files?
If it was me, and the one large file contained everything in the individual files, I would simply delete the individual files

  • Laptop struggling large files

I work a bit on my laptop (vista premium, 4gb ram) and especially with large files the ram soon get maxed out and the scratch disk is used a lot (haven't run out, have about 150-170gb free).
I was wondering if putting the scratch onto a (partitioned - 1st for scratch) portable esata hdd would help?
Have a link but don't want to look as though i'm advertising.
Has anyone had any first-hand experience?
    Thanks for any replies.

  • Transferring large file over internet

    Hi,
I am attempting to transfer a large file over the internet (around 8GB), and I'm not sure what the best way of doing it is.
This file is currently located on my desktop at home, and want to get it onto my laptop here (not going to be home for another month or so, so going home to get it isn't really an option!)
I'm suscribed to MobileMe, but the maximum upload file size for iDisk was 1GB. If there is a way around this, let me know! Another option I had was using back to my back and just copying the file over, but this will take quite a while (not a problem, as I'm expecting it to take a while however I do it!)
Any other suggestions? So far, the best option I have is just simply copying it using Back to my Mac, but please chime in if anyone as any better ideas!
    Thanks!

  • TC and WD500 External drive - Locks up when copying large files

I have a TC with a Western Digital 500GB my Book connected to the USB port on the TC that I use for network Storage. Everything works fine until I try to copy large files or directories from the Finder mounted share. After the copy freezes the external drive can no longer be seen by airport utility. If I look at disks it sees the disk but no partition. I have to power cycle the external drive to have TC see the drive again. Then I disconnect the drive and plug it in directly to the MAC and run disk utility and his repairs the journal. I have to do the repair every time it locks up. Should the external drive be formatted different or does it have to be connected to a USB hub. Or is this just a bug with the TC and afp ?

I have this very same problem.
I tried to copy a 4GB+ folder from the Macbook to the 500GB MyBook attached to my TC and it froze.
Now the the files on the MyBook are invisible when attached to the TC ("0 Items") but are available when the drive is connected directly to the Macbook. I have run disk utility but it hasn't helped. The disk is FAT 32 formatted and the files on the MyBook are still invisible over the network.
When the drive attached to the Macbook directly I can see a 'phantom' file with the same title as the 4GB+ folder I'd tried to copy. This file is "ZERO KB" and it cannot be deleted (error code -43).
Anyone have a clue what is happening here?

  • In making a "highlights" movie, using clips from different imported iMovie events, can I delete the larger iMovie event file from the Events browser and still work w the smaller clips in the Projects browser w/o having the larger files still loaded?

I have sucessfully imported 150 Sony digital 8mm movies (each one hour in length) into iMovie as 150 iMovie events. I have since successfully converted them from their original 13 Gb (.dv) file to an exported smaller 1.3 Gb (.4mv "large file") movie that I am happy with, using the iMovie projects browser. So now I have 150 " .4mv" movies on my internal HD as well as about half of my original raw data " .dv " movies on my internal hard drive.
Due to their large size (over 2 Tb), I do not have all the larger raw data (.dv) files on my 2Tb internal drive, just about half of them. What I want to do now is to create a new project in the Projects browser for each of my kids, and reload, starting with Tape #1, each of these larger files and do a highlights movie for each of my kids, wherein I pick out smaller clips from each 1 hour .dv iMovie event and paste them into the appropriate kid's Highlights project in the Projects browser.
Here's my question: If I load the first 5 large files back onto my internal HD, and paste in various shorter clips into each of my kids' Highlights project, and then if I delete those first 5 large files (they are backed up on 2 other 3Tb external HDs), can I keep doing this (reloading the next 5 large .dv files to work with), and ultimately take each of my kid's Highlights project and export as a .4mv movie EVEN THOUGH the earlier large .dv files are no longer on my internal HD, OR does my iMac need to have all these larger files loaded on my internal HD for me to eventually export each of my kid's Highlights project to a .4mv movie?
I have a 2011 era 27" iMac desktop w 2Tb HD internal and 250 Gb flash drive, and Lion OSX and iMovie 11.

Thanks. I tested it out and you were correct. I loaded 2 .dv movies from my external HD back onto my internal HD, and got them re-imported into iMovie, took a few short clips from each of the 2 iMovie events and pasted them into a new project in the Project Browser. Then I deleted these 2  "source clips" from my internal HD, closed iMovie and then re-opened it and found that iMovie would NOT export the smaller clips for a "highlights" .4mv movie without the "source clips" being available.
I read your link on Quicktime. It talks about mostly trimming, which is what I did with each iMovie event before I took each one as a project to export as a smaller .4mv file. But if I use Quicktime (do I need QT Pro or basic), what advantage is it to me to use QT over iMovie (I must admit I am a novice at iMovie and have never used QT or QT Pro as a tool)? Will it then convert any edits I make to a .m4v movie or do I need iMovie to do that?
Does QT allow trimming multiple segments out of a movie during one edit session, or can you only do 1 at a time? By that I mean that, for example, when I use Sonys Picture Motion Browser for my .mts movies, you can only set one Start and one End point for each edit/trim you do: it does not allow you to set multiple Start Stop points like iMovie allows in its Event or Project browser. You can only do one "trim" at a time, save it and then reopen to do another trim. not very useful.

  • I have been working on movies in iMovie but after downloading dropbox and exporting iMovies as large files I can no longer open up imovie on the computer.  If I download imovie again, will I have lost all my work ?

Yesterday I was working in imovie.  I exported the files as both Quicktime movies and as large files which I then placed in a Dropbox account.  Subsequently, perhaps because the files were so large, I have been unable to open the imovie programme.  The menu appears but nothing else happens. If I download the software again will I loose all my previous work ?  Has anyone any suggestions ?
