Q: How do I Mask/Layer a color photo with a black and white photo?

This is what I want to do. I've done it before but cannot remember for the life of me how to do it again. I want to put a color photo under (its own) black and white photo and then erase or remove or something (I can't remember the tool to do it) but I want to be able to see some of the color photo in my black and white photo. For example, say I have a pic of the Disneyland Castle. I want to make the pic black and white and then with a layer or mask (whichever one) have the exact colors of the picture underneith it show up after I have used the paint brush to remove the black and white...is anyone understanding me? When I did it before I know I did it in only a few steps, it wasn't super complicated, and I'm probably stupid for not knowing how to do it now. Thanks!

Lindsey,
First, look at the Channels in the B/W. Probably, you can use one of those as a Selection and then as a Layer Mask. If not perfect, then you can likely get close. If you need to, you might want to Blend more than one of those Channels.
If you have an issue "collecting" the Channels, just get your B/W into a separate Image, and then drag individual Channels back to your composite image, and use them, as is necessary.

BTW - turn OFF the color for Channels, so that you can see them as B/W, as that will help you see their makeup.

Hi,
From the application used to print open the print dialog.
Click Properties / Preferences / Settings to access the Printing Preferences dialog.
Click the Advanced button.
Under Printing Features set the Print in Grayscale value as Black Ink Only.

Colored texture pasting as black and white into a layer mask

Hello all,
First time poster, long time lurker here.
I'm pasting a colored layer into a layer mask I created in order to texturize a shape I made. Whenever I Option + Click the layer mask and then paste the texture, it pastes in black and white instead of color, see screen capture below (pardon the watermark):

If you want to add a texture to a shape, create a new layer, fill it with your texture, then ALT+click their separation line in the layers panel.
This creates a what is called a Clipping Mask: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/revealing-layers-clipping-masks.html.

How do i get Firefox to print web pages in black and white only (colors are interpreted in grayscale and some are too light to be read)?

i have a black and white laser printer. Firefox prints web pages by sending color images to my printer. The printer uses greyscale to interpret the colors. i really want Firefox to send black and white images to my printer, because with greyscale some of the colors are translated to print that is too light to be seen clearly.
Can this be done?

i just tried disabling adblock and checking if i had any no script or noscript sort of addon. i do not have a script killer. disabling adblock did not solve the issue.

How to set default to convert a document to a black and white pdf file?

I have dozens of color Word files that I need to convert to black and white pdf files on a weekly cycle. I figured out that I can do this for individual files by clicking "print", "properties", then choose the "paper/quality" tab, and then click on "black and white". However, I cannot make the "black and white" selection permanent. That is, the next file requires me to go through the same four-step process to convert a Word file to a black and white pdf file. Any suggestions on how to make the "black and white" selection permenant?

Sorry. I forgot to mention that I am using Acrobat Adobe Pro 9.4.2.

i did a clean install of photoshop cs6 , i guess they are the dafault

Ask the lab but I'd be shocked if they asked you for a grayscale document, assuming this Epson is for output of photographic images
they work with psd files and jpg
(but the when i save a photo edited with for example an adjustament layer(black&white) photoshop convert it in a grayscale image ,isn't it?
but photoshop should warns about mismatch profile ,should it? or does it work only with color space
Dot gain would account for whatever dot gain you're aiming for on the press, so you'd have to ask.
Gamma would be used for output to an emissive display, so something like 2.2 to mimic sRGB behavior might be one option
. but may i ask a question?

Gray and Spot settings are related only to convert from rgb to mode grayscale
or these settings influence what i see in the monitor when for example i add a black and white adjustament layer?
by the way gray and spot set both at dot gain 20% , are the dafault?

Y70-70 screen : problems with the black and white colors

Hi all, I just bought a Lenovo Y70-70 Touch and already encountered several problems with the screen :- I had to change the notebook twice because of clearer zones on the black and because of dead pixels- The model I have now still presents irregularities in the black : if the screen is black, I can still see a few clearer zones on it, especially (but not exclusively) on the edges- concerning the white, I am a bit disappointed too : this color present zones that are sometimes ok, sometimes more yellow. Even if it is subtle, I nevertheless particularily see this effect when reading or typing, due to an optical effect that amplifies the phenomenom when text is displayed which tires my eyes. I also see it on colors like beige or grey. As I use this computer to play but also to work, it is uncomfortable. What I would like to know is if these problems are inherent to the screen, or if it is a defect. What should I do ? Did other people encounter the same problems ? I didn't find any setting to improve it. There can be several things that could effect your issue. If you are using a color calibration device, it may change your white balance. Check and verify that you really are using pure white when filling, a value of 255, 255, 255 thats red, green, and blue. Check and see what color mode you are in, are you in 8 bit, 16 or 32 bit. Are you in RGB, CMYK, or other color mode.
I am sure there are a few other things, that I haven't thought of at the moment that can effect your issue.
The next question is what do you mean by black and white? or should I say how did you make it that way. Was it already a black and white (grayscale)? or did you convert it in photoshop and if so how. The reason I ask is there are more than one way to convert a color image to black and white and how you do it will effect the final outcome.

My printer is a HP Officejet Pro 6830, and my computer operating system is Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
I do not have an option on my word program that allows me to 'greyscale' or any type of colour option.

Hi,
Follow the steps below to print using Black Ink only:
1. From the application used to print, click the File menu and select Print. The Print window appears.
NOTE: The Print window might be minimized: Click the Show Details button to see all available settings.
2. To access the color options, click the lowest selection box listed as the name of the program (e.g. TextEdit)
Will appear as Copies & Pages within Microsoft Office applications.
3. Select Paper Type/Quality from the drop-down menu.
4. Click the triangle next to Color Options to expend the settings.
5. Set the Color field as Grayscale.
6. Set the Grayscale Mode as Black Ink Cartridge Only.
You may save the settings for future use by clicking Presets > Save Current Settings as Preset...
Any used preset will remain default so simply select teh standard preset to print in color.

Color switches to a black and white screen after login

iMac 700MHZ Graphite 10.3.9 color issue. When I am logging in the screen is in color but after login when it switches to my desktop the color also switches to a black and white screen. The other user of this computer does not have any problem with the color on his desktop. Has anyone run into this problem before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Installation of Mavericks is the culprit here. Lightroom versions 4.4 and earlier are not fully compatible with OS 10.9.x. There will be no more updates to Lightroom version 4.x so the only fix is to upgrade Lightroom to 5.0 or later or reinstall an older OS on Mac.
