Q using ease in the motion editor

I really like the motion editor in CS4. A lot is easier than before, particularly working with ease. But I wounder how you use the custom curve when having a complicated motion with a lot of keyframes. In programs like AE it's easy to select a key and tell if it's going to be a easy in/out or both, and then I select next key and tell how that key should ease. In Flash CS4 I allways get a easy curve that range the entire tween. Is the workflow to brake everything apart so you tween every single motion, or is it another way doing it?

Hi Jimmy,
What you're needing to do is ease between keyframes. There is one way of doing this for spatial properties (X, Y, Z properties), and two ways of doing this for all other properties (such as blur, rotation, etc). This blog post explains how to do it:
http://flashthusiast.com/2008/11/20/flash-cs4-how-to-ease-between-keyframes-using-new-moti on-tweens/
In a nutshell, if you are doing eases for any property that is not X, Y or Z, simply smooth the curve in/out from the property keyframe in the graph. You will need to use a custom ease for X, Y, and Z.
As for all the keyframes in the custom ease (assuming you still need it), there isn't a way to avoid that if you have that many keyframes that you need to ease in and out from.  However, there is a "snapping" feature in the custom ease graph (described in the article above) that may help you place each keyframe and after you get used to it, working with the graph may end up easier.

Now that the Motion Editor is deprecated, how can we do complex easing in our animations?

    Hi All,
Flash Pro CC 2014 (v 14.0.0.110) is now available for download via the Creative Cloud App.
We have included an all new Motion Editor along with several other new features with this release of Flash Pro. The new Motion Editor is completely redesigned, intuitive and easy to use while preserving the core functionalities and backward compatibility with Flash CS6
To Invoke the Motion Editor, simply Double-Click on your Motion Tween span on Timeline (or Right-Click and select 'Refine Motion') and the Motion Editor opens up in-context in the Timeline itself. Double-Click again to collapse once you have made your adjustments.

  • Move multiple frames in the motion editor?

Hi! Is there a way to move multiple frames in the motion editor (CS4)? Like now I have to move them one by one and it's hard to make them keep their values coz the shift+move doesn't seem to work. Or should it?
    Regards / Jimmy

You can move multiple property keyframes for a single property in the Motion editor. Shift-click them and then drag. You cannot move keyframes across different properties, however.
If you want to move *all* keyframes on mutliple frames, you want to do this on the main timeline. Ctrl/cmd+drag across the frames to select the multiple frames, and then drag them on the tween span.

  • In Flash CS5, I can't choose Smooth point in the Motion Editor.

I'm working on the Flash CS5 Classoom in a book lessons, and in Lesson 4, in the Motion Editor, right-clicking on the keyframe in the Alpha property doesn't bring up a Smooth point menu selection, just an Add a keyframe option. Is there another way to access the Smooth point option?

  • Using Pages as the email Editor in Mail

I find OS X Mail very limited in spelling error correction and grammar correction. Is there any way to use Pages as my email editor or would it be faster to learn how to spell?

Pages is a word processor, not a text editor, and Mail compose is not a Word processor in its capabilities. Apple Mail makes no provision for an external text editor, and I would advise against using copy/paste between Pages and Apple Mail. I find Apple Mail spelling and grammar checking adequate, when properly enabled.
In Apple Mail, you can enable Spell Check as you type (or before sending), and Check Grammar with Spelling. This would not let me type incorrect or incomplete words. For words that it does not know about, you right-click, and tell it to learn that spelling. People are basically patternistic, and draw from the same basic word choices in communication. You could also keep Apple's Dictionary app in your Dock, and refer to it as needed — I do.

  • Easing with the CS4 motion editor - ridiculously hard

Is it just me or is creating and applying custom easing with the motion editor absurdly difficult?
Firstly, the bezier curve tool for custom easing has a mind of its own. It will change the curve at a different anchor point to the one you're editing on a whim and every time you get close to where you want the curve it does it again and you're back to square one.
Second, you have to recreate a custom ease for EVERY TWEEN as there's no way to save them. It's impossible to create two custom eases exactly the same!
The entire motion editor seems designed to infuriate me and parts of it don't seem to have been tested AT ALL.

    Hi Jen
Thanks for your replies. Your advice regarding manipulating the bezier curves certainly fixed that particular issue for me - I think the problem in making the switch from CS3 to CS4 in this regard is that CS3 FORCES you to click on an anchor point because clicking on the curve itself creates a NEW anchor point. In CS4 you can be manipulating all of the anchor points without even knowing it (as I did).
I haven't been successful in copying and pasting a custom easing curve to another tween. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. This was very useful in CS3 and in my opinion negated the need for custom easing presets.
My main problems with the motion editor are firstly how obtrusive it is, taking up at least a third of my screen real estate to be useful and secondly how counter intuitive it is - to me it seems that you have to do a lot of the work that CS3 did for you.
I think that if you have to explain how things work to people like me who've been using Flash for years, then something's wrong. I realise that CS4's motion editor is more powerful but I'd suggest this comes as a cost to productivity and an increase in sheer frustration. It's not just the time it takes to figure out how things work, but it also slows my computer down to a snail's pace sometimes. And, of the 10-15 rows of information there, I'm usually only using one row at a time. One suggestion I have here is to minimise each category (eg 'Transformation') by default, rather than having to click through the arrows of the categories you aren't using. After Effects certainly doesn't open up every property of every layer by default. It also gives you the ability to completely hide what you don't want and shortcut keys eg p to give you only the position properties.
Another major issue for me is that the visual relationship between the length of the ease and the length of the tween is kind of lost. It took me a while to realise that they are actually one and the same and I think this may be one of the major problems with the functionality: why do they need to correspond to each other? In After Effects there is no such relationship (correct me if I'm wrong) and in CS3 the visual representation of a custom ease (in a popup) had no relationship to the length of the tween itself either. I think it's too much to look at all at once and actually reminds me more of a music sequencer like Cubase, giving you the ability to change volume, panning, effects etc of a track. If all I want to do is ease from one x position to another why am I shown the tween on the timeline, the tween for the x property in the motion editor (along with all the other properties with numbers for each) and also the curve for the ease?
I also question the changes to the way tweens are created on the timeline - to me it seems counter intuitive and an interruption to workflow - but that's another issue altogether!
    Thanks
    John

  • Please Help, Motion Editor Easing Problem

    Hi,
I'm having trouble with the Motion Editor. I'm working on a Flash banner in AS2, publishing to Flash Player 8.
I have a movie clip whose timeline I right-click and select 'Create Motion Tween.' I move position the playhead later in the timeline and move the movie clip down about 200 pixels. I add a Spring easing and assign it to the movie clip's Y property. Something weird happens- the animation jumps down to the next Y keyframe without springing. The green dashed easing line in the track does not look like the spring easing formula either. It looks like the formula for the spring is being clipped...the whole wave shape seems to be above the track (if that makes sense)...see image, below. I've reduced the spring amount to 1 and to 0...but even that does not help...it does not restore the spring. This is for a deadline tomorrow, so if you can, PLEASE please help.

In answer to my own problem and for anyone else's future reference -
having flip4mac or Divx can corrupt the codec is compressor and corrupt your M2v files when you bring them into DVDSP.
You can go into your Quicktime Folder in your HD Library and remove the Flip4mac and/or Divx components (But keep them somewhere else if you intend to use these software applications again).

How are we supposed to work with the new motion tweens if there's no motion editor anymore? Without motion editor we can't see what kind of keyframes are set and we can't set any accelerations anywhere. Does Adobe now want us to go back and use the old motion tweens?

  • Flash CS5 crashes while inserting a keyframe in Motion Editor

When I try to insert a keyframe in Motion Editor, Flash CS5 crashes.
I tried to use two computers running the same Mac OS X 10.5.8 with the same specs and only one of the machines crashes.
    Any ideas?

Is it any FLA on that machine?  As in, you can open a brand new FLA with nothing in it, draw a square, turn it into a tween, and inserting any keyframe in the motion editor crashes Flash?  That said, since you cannot reproduce on another system that's identical, it sounds like something went wrong in the install process.  I'm not sure what it might be, as we haven't encountered that kind of problem internally (or a crash on property keyframe insert).

  • Bezier Handles not showing in motion editor

I can get them to display for every property except for x and y which I find them the most necessary. I control+click to add a new keyframe while in the motion editor then alt click to convert it to a smooth keyframe. All of them let me adjust the bezier handles except for the x and y properties. It seems to automaticaly smooth but i would like more control.

This happen to me a few weeks ago and this is how I fixed it.
Try this... Make a new user account on your Mac. If the canvas shows in Motion using the new user account do this:
    1) Go to the Finder Menu, Go...
    2) Hold down the Option key...
    3) Go... Library....
    4) Application Support... Motion... Layouts... Modified... Delete Default.ModuleLayout and delete Motion.saved.moduleLayout files.
Restart Motion and see if that works for you.
