Qemu+kqemu+winxp = crash

WinXP without kqemu works, but slow.
With kqemu it hangs on logo.
I boot it this way:
qemu -hda /dev/sda
(or file copied from /dev/sda)

Looks like our devs got permission to distribute kqemu, and now we have qemu+kqemu in extra.

  • Qemu, kqemu or kvm?

What are the differences between the qemu, kqemu and kvm packages in the extra repo? Currently I'm using qemu with -kernel-kvm, is there any difference?

  • Qemu, Kqemu, Kvm

I have recently started using the QEMU-launcher from the community repo. I am running Arch64 on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, emulating M$ Windows XP. I am wondering if I should use the QEMU accelerator, KQEMU, or KVM. From what I saw on the arch wiki about KVM, it looks like I need an i686... but I am using Arch64 on an AMD64... Also.... it looked like KQEMU is also just for i686... does anyone know? Also, if they are both good for Arch64, which one should I use, or should I use both? Please forgive me; I am a bit of a newbie, but I thought I should post this here as it pertains to workstation. Thanks in advance!

  • Itunes (WinXP) Crashes OS when importing CD

Hi all, My Sister is having a problem importing CDs into iTunes. She has tried importing the Mary J Blige The Essential collection and also the Killers Sams Town recently and its blue screened her laptop and then restarts. It manages to import around 3-4 tracks and then does it no matter what CD she puts in. Its happened at least 10 different times now. The blue screen message flashes up to quick to see what it says, but in EventViewer it lists a System Error with the following text:-
    Error code 100000d1, parameter1 0000000c, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 f6c85424.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Any ideas? Tried uninstalling & reinstalling iTunes, virus checked and its all fine, re-booted several times as you can imagine. Going to try some more CDs and also changing the import format to MP3 from Unprotected AAC but I don't think that will solve it. Anyone else had a similar problem when importing? Oh and there's more than enough disk space.

I have the exact same problem (just with certain music CDs). I can import several CDs and then put in a McCartney "Back in the US" CD and it starts to import, then blue screen crash and it reboots. Very frustrating. Would love to know if you learn anything. I was told to use the most recent version of ITunes (has some fixes for Windows interface), but I was already using highest ITunes version.

  • WinXP Crashed, need to transfer from iPod to new machine

My copy of Windows XP Pro crashed, and now I want to transfer my music from my iPod to my computer, with a fresh copy of XP Home. Is there any easy way to do this?
I saw a page on the Apple site that talked about switching to disk mode, but it's a little late for that...

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Reinstalling iTunes after a WinXP crash.

After a major system crash (XP Home SP3) I had to reinstall Windows. How can I reimport old iTunes content into a new iTunes installation (all files on a hard disc, but obviously inaktive...) THX for any help !!

If Windows was re-installed, it is unlikely the data still exists on the drive.
IF it does, simple hold <SHIFT> while launching iTunes.  When prompted to choose or create a new library, point it to the existing iTunesLibrary.itl file.
IF it does not exist, restore the data from the backup of the computer.  You do have a backup, correct?

  • IPod + Palm TX = WinXP crash

    Hi all,
I just got a new Palm TX PDA and 3 months ago, I got an iPod Photo. If I try to hotsync the TX to the PC (WinXP Pro SP2) while the iPod is connected (not updating), I get an istant BSOD and the PC reboots. Anyone else experienced this?
I can't tell if the Palm or iPod driver is causing this. For, now, I have to remember to disconnect the iPod before I hotsync the PDA. Any info will be appreciated.
BTW, I'm using Palm Desktop v4.2 with Hotsync v6.0.1. The iPod has firmware v1.2 and am using iTunes 6 (latest version).
    Thanks,

  • Plugging in Video iPod crashes WinXP (Blue screen)

I got my fiancee a Video iPod for Christmas. Unfortunately, WinXP crashes the moment the iPod is plugged in, giving a BSOD for usbport.sys. I've done a full reinstall of XP (needed to anyway), and all drivers/patches are completely up-to-date (yes, even checked the manufacturer's websites directly.) The really strange part is that the iPod connects correctly to my laptop. The issue goes beyod annoying though, since the computer with the problems is the PC we use as a media center i.e. it has the full audio/video library... any ideas?
    Thanks!

    hi Frostine!
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
we can sometimes narrow this down a bit by checking on the numerical and text codes showing up with the blue screen. (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm checking on:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
can you get that information for us from their PC?
(if the screen is specifying the file that Windows is crashing on, that would be helpful to know too.)

  • Kqemu doesn't accelerate qemu anymore under kernel 2.6.21

Up until a few days ago I still ran Arch with kernel 2.6.18-Arch #1 SMP.  Qemu 0.9.0-1 with kqemu worked like a champ on that system when testing Linux live CD ISO's; the live CD ISO's ran at almost half the native speed on the virtual machine.  At the time when I installed qemu + kqemu (April 07), the only binary kqemu module available in extra was for kernel 2.6.20.  Hence, I compiled kqemu myself from source for 2.6.18.  This kqemu module was working very well in accelerating qemu.
Then, a few days ago, I did a big 'pacman -Syu' which upgraded the kernel to 2.6.21.  Qemu is still at v.0.9.0-1 but kqemu in extra comes compiled for kernel 2.6.21.  This kqemu module doesn't work: it appears to be inserted into the kernel (e.g. I don't get the error "Could not open '/dev/kqemu'") but it doesn't provide any acceleration, i.e. there is no difference at all between running qemu with or without the command line parameter '-kernel-kqemu'.  It runs incredibly slowly, so slowly as to be useless (if it even makes it to fully booting to the Desktop; often it freezes somewhere in the boot process).  The same problem holds for a kqemu module that I compiled myself from source for kernel 2.6.21.
I'm using all the same configs that I used in the previous (functional) install, i.e.:
    1. running qemu as follows:
    $ qemu -cdrom /mnt/sdb2/home/robert/LinuxMint-3.0.iso -hda qemulinux.img -m 256 -boot d -kernel-kqemu
    2. /etc/modprobe.conf has the line
    options kqemu major=0
    3. added an entry to /etc/sysctl.conf to set the system timer to 1024 Hz:
    dev.rtc.max-user-freq=1024
    4. or tried the same thing as #3 by running '# echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq'
One thing that seems to be different after the system upgrade is how or whether the system timer is set.  E.g. I now always get the following error when I run qemu as under #1:
Error: Could not configure '/dev/rtc' to have a 1024 Hz timer. This is not a fatal
error, but for better emulation accuracy either use a 2.6 host Linux kernel or
    type 'echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq' as root.
However the latter file doesn't exist anymore, i.e. after typing the above line:
    # cat /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq
cat: /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq: No such file or directory
How do I fix this problem of kqemu not working properly under the new kernel?
    Robert

retsaw wrote:Perhaps this is related to the tickless kernel feature that was introduced in the 2.6.21 kernel. Try adding "nohz=off" to your kernel command line and reboot.
I tried that, i.e. by adding the line
    append="nohz=off"
to the Arch entry in my LILO.  It didn't make any difference.

JMF crashed with Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebook using latest driver
I can't register the webcam in JMF. WinXP crashed with Blue-screen-of-dead.
The crash occurs on installation of JMF when the installer tries to detect my capture devices.
Windows also crashes when i open the JMF Registry Editor and tell it to search for my capture devices.

  • ITunes crashes everytime I start it

    Hi,
I just got an iPod nano and downloaded and installed iTunes. That went quite fine. However, whenever I try to start iTunes it crashes on me (with the standard WinXP crash dialogue box asking me whether to send the error report or not). I haven't been able to start iTunes at all.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

    Additional information:
I tried to install some other utility that can replace iTunes (called vPod). This installed properly. However, when I tried to run the program, the same thing happened to vPod too, it crashed.
Obviously, its something wrong with my system, probably a bad .dll or something but I don't know how I can figure it out. Does anyone here have some detailed knowledge of iTunes internals?
    Thanks very much.
