QLA 3.5 broken since java update
The latest java update from apple was installed on our G5 PPC last week. Since then our clients are unable to access the Quark License Administrator (ver 3.3, 3.5, 4.0). It worked fine before the update. The java prefs are set to use 1.4.2 first. We now get the following error:
-A suitable JVM could not be found. Pleas run the program again using the option -is:javahome [java home directory]
[process completed].
The Quark techs sent me a script that didn't work. They also sent me the unreleased 4.0 version. It errored saying "Unable to locate java on your system. You must install java to install the QLA 4.0 software".
Does anyone have any suggestions/tips/tricks/advice?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is used for higher education and classes started today.

Try this - I beleive it will deal with all the various issues- including permissions and Java versions- First change Java versions per earlier post
he following worked for me with QLA 3.5:
1. Run the application /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/Java Preferences
2. In the 'General' tab of this application, select to use "J2SE 1.4.2" as the version of Java to use in the 'Java Applet Runtime Settings'.
3. In the 'Java Application Runtime Settings', drag & drop J2SE 1.4.2 to the top of the list (above J2SE 5.0).
4. Click 'Save'.
5. In command line type - sudo su root
6. Feed in password
7. Execute the following (paste it in to save typing)
/Volumes/QLA\ 3.5/Mac/QLA\ 3.5\ Installers/QLA\ Server\ 3.5\ Install.command -is:javahome /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Home/ ; exit
8. You should see
InstallShield Wizard
Initializing InstallShield Wizard...
Searching for Java(tm) Virtual Machine...
........exit
9. Go growl at Quark for making us have to do such silly things.

Problem running Java applets since Java update 2 (1.6.0_20)
Hi,
Since I upgraded to Java update 2, Java applets started having problems. The most noticeable ones are:
Non-modal windows appear behing the browser Window (tested Safari 4, 5, Chrome 5).
Double buffering not working as usual (slower, white boxes appear when dragging a window, etc.)
Slower rendering in general
The same applications run perfectly using Java Web Start. And they used to work very well also in Java update 1.
The application can be tested here (press ok if a login prompt appears):
Java applet: http://jmap3.k2geospatial.com/montreal_applet/
Java Web Start: http://jmap3.k2geospatial.com/montreal_jws/dockingClient.jnlp
Our applications running in applets use the new plug-in 2 with JNLP files.
Notice the Java startup splash (the animated sun-like logo) is not moving as smoothly as usual. It is very jerky now.
Are these problems known by anyone?
How can I downgrade Java to previous version?
sorry I cross-posted this in Unix forum also. I think it is better here.
Thank you,
Jean-Robert
K2 GeospatialSince the last Java update on mac, all my OpenGL applets stop working and now just shows a white screen on Chrome, Firefox and Opera. They was working well on all browsers (Safari/WebKit,Chrome,Firefox,Opera) just before the update.
The trouble maker seem to be the java plugin 2 and the new offscreen rendering pipeline, as reported by jrhaddad with the disucssion linked to the different Java/OpenGL community forums.
This is a huge regression for me, and I think for all hobbies/ independent developers and all companies who are doing some Java/OpenGL develoment. All our work just stop working since this update.
If would really want to know from Apple if they are working on this problem and/or how this can be solved.
Should this be fixed by Apple with a new java update, or should the various browsers must upgrade their applet support plugins according to the new java plugin 2 changes ?
Best Regards,

Safari & system problems since Java updat
Since updating to the new Java update (Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2), Safari will occasionally hang and it also hangs OS X. The only way to recover is to reboot. I have cleaned all the Java caches using the Java utilities. Have not done anything with the 'plist' area yet.
Anyone else having similar problems?Hi Jimo
There is considerable discussion on this subject as recent as an hour ago at this link (Safari freezes Tiger) including my own comments about a possible workaround involving disabling tabbed browsing.

Asset Generator broken since recent update to Photoshop CC
With this latest update to Photoshop CC, the asset generator no longer seems to support having masks on a folder - asset will NOT generate if this is the case. Seems the only work-around is to clip everything down to a shape layer, which is highly awkward. Is this a bug? Can it please be fixed? This used to work just fine and has only been broken since the most recent update.
My team is having the same issue. I'd love to hear about a fix to this.

First, follow the instructions for uninstalling Glims here > How do I uninstall Glims?
Then quit and relaunch Safari to test. If it crashes again, go to: /Library/ScriptingAdditions/DeliciousSafari Addition.osax/Contents/MacOS/DeliciousSafari Addition
Move the DeliciousSafari Addition.osax/Contents/MacOS/DeliciousSafari Addition file to the Trash.
Then quit and relaunch Safari. If it still crashes, you need to troubleshoot the extensions noted above.
Since Safari crashes as soon as it's launched, you will have to boot in Safe Mode then uninstall one exension at a time in Safari > Preferences > Extensions. Quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find one or more of the extensions that is causing Safari to crash.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.

Mail broken since security update 2008-004, multiple symptoms
Unfortunately, I can't sum this up in a snappy headline.
To get this started: the machine is an iMac 800MHz, which is running Mac OS X Server 10.4.11. It's not running Leopard, which might cure several issues, because it can't be installed on that machine.
The load is very light (low-traffic web site, DNS server for a low-traffic domain, mail server for essentially one user). I just mention this before I get the "you should not run this on an iMac" type of replies, which are not to the point. The computer ran Mac OS X Server ever since I got it years ago, and it can keep up with the load just fine. It can't keep up with the fragile nature of the Cyrus/postfix/whatever combination, which e.g. after a power outage, or worse, after a software update seems to leave the system semi-regularly in a state that's utterly undefined.
So the system was running very smoothly, for the first time in quite a while, until that security update 2008-004 came along. In installed it, rebooted the system, and now Mail service is down.
If I try to look at the settings for Mail with Server Admin, I get this error message:
"A Service has encountered an error - Try to refresh the view (MY.FIXED.IP.ADDRESS/Mail). Report the problem to the administrator if it persists. (Cannot allocate memory)"
Usually, when Mail acts up, I have this standard routine that I execute, and in 98% of cases that fixes everything:
+serveradmin stop mail+
+serveradmin stop mail+
+find /private/var/imap/socket/ -name "lock" -print -exec rm -rf {} \;+
+rm /private/var/imap/socket/lmtpunix*+
+rm /private//var/imap/socket/lmtp+
+sudo -u cyrusimap /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/ctl_cyrusdb -r+
+sudo -u cyrusimap /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/chk_cyrus+
+serveradmin start mail+
+serveradmin start mail+
+postfix check+
+postfix start+
Typically, when the ctl_cyrusdb -r runs, I see all the various IMAP folders listed as they are being processed. This is NOT happing now, even though if I navigate into /var/spool/imap/user/someUserName they are all there in the proper hierarchy
I ran DiskUtility's repair permissions, just in case something was screwed up by the ugprade. Also no dice.
Any hints highly appreciated...Thanks for your suggestions. I knew that a full rebuild of the database would likely get things going again, and I ended up doing just that, because there server was reaching the point of down-time where permanent delivery failures would result if I didn't bring it back up.
The problem with the mailbox rebuild approach is, that all flags and read/unread status are lost, with is a MAJOR problem. I wish Apple's Mail had a feature where you can push cached message status back to the server, overriding server side message attributes with those cached on the client. Unfortunately this isn't available.
So Mail is running again, but I can't really consider this problem "solved" because all my flagged messages are unflagged, and all messages, read or unread, are now marked unread. If you have a mail archive of several GB dating back to the early 90s, then losing the flagged status on messages is a major issue, as is trying to ge a few hundred thousand messages to get unread again...
I do however take some exception to what you write:
pterobyte wrote:
You shouldn't have to rebuild your database after a restart or update. If you have to something is wrong on your server. A power outage is a different issue. Any database in the world can get inconsistent because of a sudden power cut. This is what an UPS is for.
That is akin to saying, it's OK if a file system is in a messed up state when the power goes down. That's what atomic operations, transactions, journaling, etc. were invented for. This day and age, there's no excuse for a database to end up in a messed up state because power went down, or for that matter, the system crashes, because no UPS will protect from the latter.
Critical systems, and mail delivery belongs to these, must handle failure gracefully, and the technology to do so, does exist.
pterobyte wrote:
Also, on OS X Server you should NOT use "postfix stop|start". Use Server Admin or launchctl to stop the launchd item. Furthermore, you should not manually interact with the Cyrus database and remove files. Cyrus is capable of handling its locks and sockets.
I know that this is how things SHOULD be. Unfortunately, postfix will not start properly when mail services are started with server admin. It will stop properly when I stop mail services though.
I had posted a question about that ages ago, but nobody could figure out what is going on. So in the mean time I have resigned to the fact that I have to start postfix manually after each reboot.
I'd more than happy to get past that issue. Here a link to my question regarding this matter:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=904736&tstart=0
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=908174&tstart=0
Similarly, I had once issus where cyrus would refuse to start up, and I found in some support forum the instructions to remove some of these lock files and pipes. That indeed got cyrus going again, and since it recreates these files automatically, I ended up adding the removal of these files to my "try this procedure if mail acts up" routine. It doesn't seem to harm the setup from what I can tell, and it has gotten a stuck system back to work more than once. -
Since the last update, firefox is failing to operate correctly. For example javascript embeded inside of tables fails completely, also more and more web sites are now, no longer accessable with Firefox!
The details aside suggest you are using Firefox3.6.12 if so that is not secure, it should be Firefox 3.6.27.
There is a possibility some sites will still expect Firerfox 3.6 but that will not be supported for much longer, the current Release is Firefox 10.0.2
More Information
...All I can say is that it is a Government web site that involves money!!!
If you are using a Government financial site why not consult their IT department for advice on what browsers are secure and supported. If problems persist please post back once you have upgraded to a secure version of Firefox, and say what problems you get on publicly available sites. -
Playback in viewer and canvass broken since QT update
I have a Macbook (OS10.5.8) 4 GB RAM, running FCP 7.0.3 that I use to capture video when I'm on a dive trip. I am working with HDV 1080 captured from a Sony DC9 camera. Everything worked fine until I updated QT to 7.6.9. Now playback in the canvass and viewer is messed up. It looks grainy amd and almost like some channels(?) are missing. I tried trashing preferences but that didn't help. When I log and capture, the capture window plays normally. If I put the clips in iMovie, they play normally. If I put the clips in the QT player itself, they play normally. View in FCP is sent to RGB. When will I learn not to update things when everything is working OK. I can't believe my stupidity!
SteveFirst, download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (http://www.digitalrebellion.com/) and delete your fcp preferences. May help. If that doesn't work, you could try converting your material to prores using compressor. Do a short test first to see if it solves the problem. It will take a while and use up a fair amount of drive space, but prores is a much better format to work with.
Then, once you have a stable, working OS and Application combo, make a bootable clone of your startup drive using something like carboncopycloner. Once you've done this, you can update OS and Apps with impunity. If things go south, you can simply clone back to your startup drive and be back at work in an hour or two. I've got a clone on a second internal drive so I can simply change my startup disk and be back at work in a couple of minutes. -

gnome.ui.App.add_toolbar(self, toolbar, name, behavior, 0, band, 0, 0)
AttributeError: type object 'gnome.ui.App' has no attribute 'add_toolbar'
The program just sits here and doesn't finish initializing. I'm hoping i'm just missing dependency or something, as i don't have the full gnome desktop environment installed, just the handful of dependencies that other applications required. Thanks for any pointers.

the latest gnome-python update today seems to have fixed the issue.

I checked the thread mentioned by graysky (BTW: I am a Disturbed fan, too) and when I read WonderWoofy's post about dead symlinks, I tried
systemctl stop nfs-server.service
systemctl disable nfs-server.service
systemctl enable nfs-server.service
systemctl start nfs-server.service
and that helped.
Thanks a lot to both of you. Marking thread as SOLVED. -
Bloomberg video no longer plays since last system or Java update - I do not recall which.
In last 45 days or so, Bloomberg video no longer plays.
This is the result of a system or Java update - I do not recall which. I've tried all the tips that Bloomberg has suggested to no avail... and they are no longer assisting me! Please help, friends. I've been a Macintosh user since 1986 (really!), please help, friends.
Below is that they have said to me about this issue:

Hello:
-Please confirm that JavaScript is enabled in your web browser.
-We recommend you check the Flash Player settings on your computer. You can use
the following link to check the "Global Storage Settings" tab:

Make sure to check the box that said "Allow third-party Flash content to store

HELP, please! I've done all that you've suggested, and I'm still unable to view
Bloomberg videos. Can you help me? I 'think' it started with a recent Java
update on MAC OS, but I'm not totally sure.

Hello,
We are sorry we are unable to assist you further with this query. We are not
experiencing this issue and are unable to duplicate at this time.
Sincerely,
Bloomberg Website Feedback TeamDo you use Glimmerblocker, or any other advert/content/security blocking/filtering software ?
Yes, I use Sophos. But, recall that with another browser (Chrome), video plays fine. So the issue is not with Sophos per se.
Safari-Preferences-Extensions is set to OFF ?
I just turned Safari-Preferences-Extensions to OFF. Video will sill not play.
Regarding;"
check System Preferences - Flash Player - Storage tab to see that 'allow sites to save information..." is on.
In the Advanced tab - click 'delete all' ?"
I did this, but, I an unable to delete all the Site Data; I get an error box: "Flash Player was unable to delete all local storage. The files may be locked by another program. Close all browsers or restart your computer, and try again."
I get this error even with all the browsers are closed.
I think this points to our bug: Only in my Mac OS user profile and only in Safari there seems to be some Flash Player file which is either 'open' or 'locked' to deleting.
Where could that pesky file be???? -
Java will no longer run on my MacBook pro since I updated my java
Java will no longer run on my MacBook pro since I updated my java - what the heck is with that? When I try to do as suggested and go under Java preferences it wont allow me make any changes this is the error message I get "Cannot launch "java preference" no compatible version of Java 1.5 + is available."
Then it gives the option to open java preferences or quit. It will only allow me to quit as it won't open java preferences. Stupid updates!Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

I wonder if somebody can help me. I am not able to use my internet bank anymore, since Java launched their latest update (7.51) a few days ago. Appearently this one is not compatible with my hardware. I am using Mac OSX version 10.6.8, and Java version 17.0, which seems to be the newest one for my op sys. Anybody know how I can solve this? In advance thank you!
Apple support article to enable Java 6.
Java 6 Enable -
There is an java app that I have run for years without any problem Within the last few days it started running very slowly. I went to the Apple store and ran the same app and experienced exactly the same problem
Yesterday I tried running this app on a Windows based machine and it ran perfectly.
I was all set to download the latest java when I saw that Apple supplied the java version on the MAC.
I have run sotware updates and get results that all software is uptodate.
Any suggestions? There are many people who have posted about persistent export failures since the update. A search will uncover a number of threads just within the past month. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to these problems – and if there is common fix, I haven't heard about it.
However, the update hasn't been a problem for me – nor presumably has it been for the majority of users.

Sky+ HD box broken since recent software update? what to do?
I'm going round in circles...SKY+ box now is not working since software update !.. I've been on the phone and online chat about the broken sky box ( account and box approx 3 years old ). I spoke to someone on chat who re-negotiated my package "cheaper" which was very nice but a bit pointless without a working sky box...was advise he would transfer me to different department to discuss replacement of the sky+ box, got through to other department and they had no idea why I'd been put through to them had no record of my previous conversation .. and unable to help!.. Yes I'm now getting agitated !.. phoned 03442 414 141 instead, on his advice and they said we can give you a new sky box for £214.00 ! , or get multiroom? for another £11 a month?? not helping ... annoyed as prior to the sky software update the box wasnt the problem !... Ive been then trying the fix by following the solutions online to still be in the state of amber light and no sky TV.... it then directs me to an engineer call out at £65. Who apparantly will either fix the old box ( until the next time ) or replace it with a refurbished one ? Obviously looking on e-bay etc you can buy boxes for between £10 to £40 ...feel annoyed why as a customer for well over 14 years I'm being shoved away at a massive cost to myself. Oh and look... a new customer could potentially have £125 from being recommend via friend, TV or Tesco /M&S £100 voucher... I'm annoyed and what do I do next ?.....
Same problem for me, 1TB Sky box. Box updated on the 22nd of July 2015. Scheduled recordings now do technical fault 7 (33) picture breaks up on play back, but not all the time. Others fail with fault 10. Done the full software, re-download (backup and switch on), new install, planner rebuild. Even down to a full system reset. All other features work. On demand works only if I let it download to 100%. Try any sooner and TF7 (33) faults again. All I can think is the update is causing excessive CPU usage. Call out this Sunday bringing a reconditioned box. So if it's same 1TB and same EPG I might get the same problem. I'll post more after the engineer had been.
