  • SVM: migrating to a new disk device

    Hello,
We have a 70GB LUN from one SAN disk array on a Solaris 10 server. This LUN has been configured into SVM using a single disk device and then carved up into soft partitions. We will need to migrate this LUN to a new disk array. Since SVM only sees this LUN as a disk slice and not as a metavolume, is there any way to mirror/replace the disk without disabling the applications that have been built on the soft partitions? In this case, we have several active Solaris Containers root file systems living on these soft partitions. Some metastat output to give you a better picture:
    # metastat -c

I looked at the manual for "metareplace" and the language indicates that it would only work with a metavolume and not directly with the disk device.
    Thanks.

Okay, there's two ways to use SPs and mirrors. The easist way in most cases is to create a large mirror, then carve the SPs out of it. But you really have to start off doing that. Trying to convert this layout to that would be annoying, assuming it's possible at all.
The other way is to take the SP, toss a concat/stripe on it, then use that as the submirror base. It's a bit more annoying because you have to create the SPs on the other disk in the same manner.
So you'd take a look at 'metastat -p' output. That shows the commands to recreate the current layout. Use the SP creation items, but run them on the second disk. This sets up a second set of SPs.
    Then take all the SPs and put a concat/stripe on them. So for one of the existing SPs (like d101), you'd do like this;
    metainit d151 1 1 d101
Do that for all the SPs (on both disks). Now you can create the one-way mirrors from the currently-used side. As an example:
    metainit d201 -m d151
Now you've got the mirror. The problem is that the filesystem is still mounted from d101. You've got to unmount from d101 and mount d201 before you can sync the mirror to the other side (that's the only step that can't be done online). Once the side is no longer mounted, you can sync up.
metattach d201 d171 (or whatever you've named it).
    Good luck.

  • After add (in a wrong way)  a new disk in ASM, cluster don´t start

    Hi,
    Environment:
    Oracle RAC 10gR2
    2 nodes windows 2003 advanced server (node1 called "database1" and node2 called "database2").
    ASM
    san storage
    Case:
My client has tried to add a new disk (in a environment san) in ASM with the next steps:
    1. database1 and database2 are up.
    2. instance ASM1 from database is up and instance ASM2 from database2 is down (I don´t know why¿¿¿¿¿¿¿??????????).
    3. add a new disc from san storage to instance ASM1. At the end, a lot of errors show in screen due to  instance ASM2 was down.
    4. client tried to up +ASM2 and then , all the cluster crashed.
    5. reboot boths nodes database1 and database2 , and Windows 2003 Server don´t start well (hung up, due to services from oracle cluster are "automatically start"-
    6. disable oracle services in "not automatically start" and windows 2003 server start well.
    7. now oracle rac don´t start, ASM don start, instances don´t start ....
what can I do? any idea?
    Regards.
    Laura

Did you try to bring the U1 and it's associated ASM instance up while the other node is shutdown? Are you using Oracle clusterware?

  • I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard.  Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?

I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard.  Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • Can someone please tell me how to format a new disk to ZFS format?

I have a Sun v240 with Solaris 10 update 8 installed on a single 73GB harddisk. Everything is working fine. I just purchased a another identical harddisk online. I plugged the disk into my v240 and ran 'devfsadm' and solaris found the new disk. I want to add this disk to my existing ZFS pool as a mirror. However, this disk was originally formatted with a UFS file system. So when I run:
zpool attach rpool c1t0d0 c1t1d0I get:
/dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 contains a ufs filesystem.I understand the error message but I don't know how to format the disk to have a ZFS file system instead. Note that I am extremely new to Solaris, ZFS, and pretty much everything Sun - I bought this server on eBay so that I could learn more about it. It's been pretty fun so far but need some help here and there.
For some reason I can't find a single hit on Google telling me how to just simply format a disk to ZFS. Can I use the 'format' command? Maybe you don't "format" disks for ZFS? I have no idea. I might not have the right terminology. If so, apologies. Can anyone help me on this?
    Thanks a lot! =D

Yes, you were right. The partitions were totally different. Here is what I saw:
    For c1t0d0:
    # format
Part      Tag    Flag     Cylinders         Size            Blocks
      0       root    wm       0 - 14086       68.35GB    (14087/0/0) 143349312

      7 unassigned    wm       0                0         (0/0/0)             0For c1t1d0:

      7 unassigned    wm       0                0         (0/0/0)             0So then I ran the following:
    # prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0 | fmthard -s - /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0
fmthard:  New volume table of contents now in place. Then I rechecked the partition table for c1t1d0:
    # format
Part      Tag    Flag     Cylinders         Size            Blocks
      0       root    wm       0 - 14086       68.35GB    (14087/0/0) 143349312

      7 unassigned    wu       0                0         (0/0/0)             0Woo-hoo!! It matches the first disk now! :)
Then I tried to attach the new disk to the pool again:
    # zpool attach -f rpool c1t0d0s0 c1t1d0s0
Please be sure to invoke installboot(1M) to make 'c1t1d0s0' bootable.
Make sure to wait until resilver is done before rebooting.
    bash-3.00# zpool status

Then, after resilvering completed I ran:
    # installboot -F zfs /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/zfs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0I think I'm starting to understand this now. I also shutdown the server to the OpenBoot prompt and booted off of the new disk and it worked! Also, my bootup time to login has drastically decreased - I would say it's about half the time it was before I added the mirror disk. So I believe the server is properly reading from both disks simultaneously in order to get better bandwidth. Cool! :)
    Thanks for the help!

  • Memory exhaust on SLES 10 SP1 ECC6

    Hello dear forum members,
We have ECC6 running on SLES 10 SP1.
    Kernel : 700 patchlevel 146  created in  :  Linux GNU SLES-9 x86_64 cc3.3.3
The database runs on a seperate server.
The SLES box has 12 GB extended, 8 GB dedicated to ECC6.
When SAP starts all is fine, but in st06
in the memory/history it shows that every hour the
    average free memory diminishes.
TOP on OS level shows that the shown values in ST06 are correct.
SAP appears to release the memory correctly.
This goes on untill approx. 300 MB EM is left. This takes around 2 days.
Then the system starts paging untill it runs out of swap space (slowly but surely using more and more of it) until the system finally freezes.
The only note I can find is 724140 but I am not sure if it will solve the problem.
Has anyone had a similar experience or a good idea where to look for a solution?
    Many thanks
    Han

    Dear forum members,
Linux ran on a VM (VMware)
The configuration was not according to note 1122388 and the mentioned VMware white papers.
To (drastically) resolve all issues, a choice was made to move to a different box, not in a Virtual Machine anymore.
    This solved the memory issue.
    Kindest regards
    Han

  • Creating a new disk inage

I am trying to make a new dvd from another one and in disc utilities when new image is clicked the error message tells me "permission is denied. " If I click, verify permissions, before clicking New Image it tells me"Not available because the selected disk is set to ignore ownership." The disk I am trying to make a copy of has an allowance of 100 copies from the author.
How can I fix this??? Also my disk self ejects sometimes 20 seconds after I insert it.

    Duplicate a CD or DVD
    1. Insert the DVD/CD;
    2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
    4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
    5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
    6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

  • Recovery from time machine onto new disk drive

i am replacing my failed G5 internal disk drive with a new disk drive. can i recover everything (including OS) from my time machine backup or do i need to install the OS (Leopard) first and then recover from time machine?

You can boot off your 10.5 installer disc that was usable to install 10.5 on your G5 and run the restore from its Time Machine restore in the Utilities menu of the installer.  Assuming the backup of course was done of the entire hard disk when you did a Time Machine backup.  If it wasn't of the entire hard disk, then the restored backup won't be bootable, and you'll need to install 10.5 first.

  • I am going to buy a bigger hard drive. i am operating on Lion. how do i install my os on the new disk? i can't use time machine.

i am going to buy a bigger hard drive. i am operating on Lion. how do i install my os on the new disk? i can't use time machine.

Plug this new drive as an external drive, boot from lion recovery "command-R" more info here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/
Open disk utility, format and partition the disk at your will (allways Mac OS plus...) and go ahead with the install, don't care if it tells you to whait thousands of hours, I did get installed in 2 hours and a half last week.
If you can't plug the disk as an external one, you'll have first to do an USB disk recovery utility, as easy as download the recovery utility and install it in an USB disk, you can find anything from the link above, plug the disk as a single master, and boot from the USB you created before.
    Tell me how it went!!!

  • Restore Files & App's From Damaged Start-Up Disk (10.4) to New Disk (10.5)

I appreciate any help all of you can give me. This is kind of a weird one, so I'll try and be brief. I have a G5 that had problems with a malfunctioning start-up disk. I purchased a new hard drive and went to install 10.4 and found that it was an upgrade disk, not an original install disk. As the computer had a former owner, I originally purchased it and all of its software from him but evidently I only got the 10.4 Upgrade disk from him, not the full install. I have since purchased Leopard and installed it on the new start-up disk. Diskwarrior and Disk Utility will both allow me to open my old disk in a read-only manner, but I'm wondering now if there is an easy way to move all of my app's, files, email's, etc. over to the new disk.
I did partition the disk so that I could make an image and copy over the old disk to the new partitioned volume, but since it would then have a copy of 10.4 on it will this cause issues with my start-up volume running 10.5? Will my app's run alright under Leopard? What about running the files from that disk? Also since I had directory issues, I'm worried that by making an image and copying to the new one I may create more issues (Diskwarrior would not replace the old directory due to a disk malfunction).
I could reinstall most of the app's (include Final Cut Studio, Adobe After Affects, etc.) but I'm just not looking forward to going through each one individually. Also, is there an easy way to copy over my user files (doc's, email's, etc.) from that old drive?
The biggest thing is I just don't want to screw up the new drive and install. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Did you do the Super Duper clone before you tried to reinstall the OS? If so, the original install disc is likely earlier than 10.4.11, and that may be why you are getting the message.
When trying to reinstall the OS, did you select the "Archive and Install" option? If not, you might try that. Here's a link that might help:

    Good luck!

  • Clean install from Leopard to M. Lion on new disk

I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro with 10.5.8 and a too small disk. I just purchased a 500GB internal disk. I'd like to do a clean install from Leopard to Mountain Lion using the new disk. What is the recommended procedure? I'd like to avoid the extra step of installing Snow Leopard first as documented.

Well, I wouldn't do it that way, too many steps.
    I would:
    1. Clone your current drive to the external drive, instead of using Time Machine. (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper)
    2. Boot from your external drive, update it to Snow Leopard.
    3. Purchase and download ML from that external boot. Save a copy of the installer to a location other than the Applications folder, that way it won't be erased after you use it. (verify that you've made a copy and not just an alias)
    4. Install your new drive, format it.
    5. Boot from your external, run the ML installer, select your new empty internal as the install destination, when prompted, use Setup Assistant to migrate your data from the external to the internal.
    6. When done, you should have a fresh install of ML on your new internal and a bootable SL on your external as a backup. If you decide that you want to go back to SL, you can just erase the internal and clone the external back to the internal.
Note: You don't need to make a bootable USB installer, they're too slow anyway. Just keep a copy of the ML installer on your external, bootable drive, so that you won't have to download it again.
Another option: Since you're replacing the intrenal with a 500 Gig drive, you could partition it to two 250 Gig partitions. Put ML on one and SL on the other, i.e.,

  • My disk drive does not play any original dvd or cd anymore, but the copies work fine, no matter which format. Do I need a new disk drive?

    Hello All,
since last week my disk drive does not play any original DVD or CD anymore, but copied ones, no matter which format work fine. I am a bit confused that the copied ones still work.
Anybody experienced the same? Will I have to get a new disk drive? Unfortunately the warranty expired last month
Looking forward to your answers and thanks,
    Yvonne

An external DVD drive from http://www.macsales.com/ may solve your problems.

  • Original iMac will not boot from new disk

I am having considerable difficulty getting a new disk to boot in an original 'Bondi blue' iMac.
I think I have researched this issue reasonably well and found a few references to it but no solution. I have more resources than most and have tried every trick I know. The story at the following link is not dissimilar to my experience:
    http://www.applefritter.com/node/20518
    Details:
iMac - original 233 MHz revision A with 160 MB RAM
New disk - 120 GB 7200 rpm Western Digital disk type WD1200SB
Format - HFS+ with 7 GB first partition and 107 GB second partition
Jumpers - both CD and disk set to master - normal for this iMac I believe
The iMac will seldom boot from OS X 10.3 on first partition or OS 9.2.2 on second partition with or without the other OS totally removed. I have reformatted several times and played with several disk drivers. I have zapped PRAM a few times. I sometimes get a grey screen but more frequently get a flashing question mark.
I can mount both volumes when booted from a CD and every test shows that they behave as expected. The disk boots properly in a G4.
I am prepared to try anything but I would particularly appreciate advice from somebody who knows what the problem is.

Eureka - it works - thanks very much.
It now boots from OS 9.2.2 on both partitions every time. I have yet to replaced the OS X that I removed earlier but I am not expecting difficulties.
My view is that http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25249 is badly written. I assume that item 4 should read 'OS X' and not "Mac OS". It may have been written on the assumption that users only want OS X and Classic on a single partition. My experience, particularly with early iMacs, is that it pays to have 2 bootable partitions and it is expedient to have OS X on one and OS 9.2.2 on the other with the OS 9.2.2 being used for Classic and for direct booting into OS 9.2.2.
My error was in paying insufficient attention to
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=1277&pcreated=1095792241#jumper
which clearly indicates jumper positions for single drives although a few words about it would underline the point. I had already discovered that these iMacs normally have both CD and disk set to master so should have realised that strictly they are 'single drives'. I had initially used the clear, but misleading, drive silk screen printing, ie CS, slave, master to set the jumper but should have changed it when checking the WD site later. Perhaps they could use this thread to update their FAQs - I will mention it to them.
In answer to those, on this thread and elsewhere, who were not happy with my sloppy copying of OS 9.x, I discovered some years ago that as long as you 'blessed' the end result in situ with one of the free OS 9.x updaters it is surprising what you can get away with. - I am not advising anybody to do this unless it is within the terms of their Apple license!
Now I wonder if I should stick with OS X 10.3 or if it is worth trying OS X 10.4 with
    http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/Framework.cfm?page=XPostFacto.htm l
Does anybody know how satisfactory it is and if it has serious memory or speed implications? My only slightly unusual software is Cisco VPN client.

  • New Disk Image - Says my iPhoto Library is locked?

I am using OS X 10.9.1. I created a new disk image so that I can share an iPhoto library between two different users on the same Mac. When I try and open iPhoto having linked the new library it says that I cannot because either the library or the disk is locked or I do not have permissions. I have checked the sharing set up for both the new library and the drive but I can not find anything wrong. Any suggestions?

    directions are here - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
However it generally is much more successful to use the external hard drive with ownership ignored option than the disk image option
