Qmaster ate my quicktime - what the ...?

i finally got qmaster set up using a macpro 3ghz machine as both controller and renderer and a 1.67 hz G4 powerbook as a node.
after doing a test render of 1200 frames of a longer shake script i found that the original media that the script utilized had been wiped from its external firewire drive. (not the drive that I was rendering to, or so I thought.) this was a piece of media from a panasonic P2 card and it appears to be gone forever. what I've found in it's place is a weird 1200 frame image sequence that seems to bear no relation to the fileout node of the shake script that I thought I was rendering.
can someone give guidance? thanks in advance...
MacPro Dual 3ghz, Powerbook 1.67 hz g4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   also two lacie firewire drives, daisy chained to host machine

Just to confirm, do you mean that you opened a Pages 09 file in Pages 5.0, and then exported back to Pages 09 and found things messed up? If so, do you have a back-up file that you can use?
For example, this happened to me (Pages 5.0 messed up my formatting, killing linked text boxes, etc), so I used Time Machine to go back and get the file before it was opened in Pages 5.0.
I don't have another option for you, but there are plenty of people writing about and sharing options on these forums, so have a look.
Also, let Apple know your feelings via Pages Feedback.

after exporting to quicktime file, the file has sound but no video, what am I doing wrong?  The self contained movie box is not checked.

    Hi
Did You go via Compressor ?
Did You use QuickTime Conversion ?
    I don't
    I do
    • In TimeLine set In and Out-Points to the full Movie/Project
    • Select ALL - Clips and Audio
    • Go up to Sequence and down to Render Only - down to Mix Down Audio
    • then Sequense and Render Selected - Both (Video and Audio)
    • then Export and as QuickTime .mov (NOTHING ELSE)
    • I use to do - Not Self-Contained as it saves both time and space
Your Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk - Needs lot's of free space to work OK - I never go under 25Gb free space on this one,
Good Luck - Yours Bengt W

I have an .avi file Quicktime is refusing to play, yet the information says Quicktime does play .avi files. Does anyone know what the problem is?

AVI is a legacy file container originated by Microsoft back in 1992 and which has not been officially supported for more than a decade. Like the container, many of the codecs commonly used to create AVI content are also "legacy" compression formats most often supported on PC/Windows platforms. In fact, some codecs have never been transcoded for Mac use. Of those that have, many never made the transition to Mac OS X or the transition to Intel-based platforms. Those codecs that are still supported on the Mac can normally be found in the avi to quicktime converter available as an online download. While some common AVI compression formats may be supported by the QT X Player app, QT 7 currently provides a more compatible AVI playback environment for most "legacy" compression formats. If the codec(s) used in your AVI files are not supported by the avi to quicktime converter for QT use, you can try the VLC media player which may still support more esoteric compression formats. If  VLC does not support the files, the normal approach is to discover which specific audio and/or video codecs were used to create the file and perform an Internet search to see if a compatible Mac component is available for download.

  • Quicktime X... What the Heck!!!!

Quicktime X. Give me my old QT back. I have pro, but none of the features show up in QT X (10).
There isn't even a prefs option to see if it is registered. Also, I can't install QT 7.6.4 because of X.
What the Heck!!!! This version is so dumbed down, it blows!!!!!

    New kid on the block?
No, Not at all. Did think I should have to even look for another Quicktime. It's just that after 20 years of post production, this is not the Apple way of doing things.
I just find it incredibly odd that after so many years of putting this App in the Apps folder, that they would replace it with an inferior version, that has dummy presets and shiny buttons and move the "legendary" full featured app to the utilities folder.
I guess I have finally entered into the new "old school". Those of you who have fine tuned your encodes for optimal performance know what I'm talking about for sure.
    Thanks for the posts folks.

  • What the heck is going on with my Virtual Memory??!!

I'm not really sure why but when I check activity monitor and see my VM it says i'm using anywhere from 230-270 gigs of virtual memory. This is literally fresh out of restart when it says this much and never changes. I go through and check every process I see runing and create a quick estimate of the virtual memory being used, and it's definitely not over 10 gigs if even 5; honestly I think it's listing between 1-2.
What the heck could be causing this? Verified HD and came up clean. Should I be concerned? I'm not gonna lie this macbook isn't running the best it used to be. Watching videos, whether mp4, mkv, youtube, is pretty laggy. I'm aways sure to close all other processes to to try and maximize video performance, not that it helps much. I'm considering a fresh install and recovery via timemachine.

I excluded the list of fonts from step 4 as I'm a graphic design major and have well over a thousand...and I didn't want you to burn up your scroll wheel or rub the tips of your fingers off with the amount of scrolling you'd have to do had I included them .

"iTunes can not run because some of the required fields are missing.  Please reinstall iTunes."  What the ****?  Please help me figure this out.  I already removed quicktime (as another thread suggested).  I can't get in!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled more times than i care to count. but still i get
itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing.

  • ITunes/Quicktime problem "The older version of Quicktime cannot be removed"

Whenever I try installing iTunes 7, I get the message "The older version of Quicktime cannot be removed." A similar problem with the same wording similarly cropped when I downloaded iTunes 6.
Source of the problem is a failed System Restore which left files corrupted and such, I've tried using ccCleaner to remove iTunes and Quicktime from the registry but it simply isn't there, as is the case when I use regedit in Run.
Add/Remove Programs doesn't work as well, when I click on uninstall for iTunes/iPod/Quicktime there just isn't any response or window that pops up
    Any help?

okay, let's try the technique from the following post. (it includes instructions on what to do if Add/Remove isn't working for a program.)

  • Watching Iphoto on DVD is horrible!!! Whats the secret??

We are trying to export a slideshow to IDVD and watch it on a T.V. The slideshows look great in Iphoto, but as soon as played on DVD they look horrible. Whats the secret?? Also, any picture that is moving with black on the left and the right look REALLY CRAPPy.
    Thanks for the help.
    Parksy

    Parksy:
When you export a slideshow to iDVD you're compressing and encoding it in Quicktime to 640 x 480 pixels. Then in iDVD there's additional encoding which can compress it further depending on the size. What you're seeing in iPHoto are the full sized files being used. A big difference.
IMO, the best quality slideshows to be obtained in iDVD are those created solely in iDVD from the stills. True, you can have your Ken Burns effect but you can have titles and subtitles if desired and better quality images when played to a TV set.
If you can't live without the KB effect here are some tips from one of the top iMovie gurus on getting the best slideshows in iDVD from iMovie and iPhoto:
Karl Peterson’s Best Method to Create a Slideshow in iDVD
Here are my requirements for a slideshow: More than 99 photos. Music matched up to individual slides throughout the show (so idvd is out for creating the slideshow).
As everyone knows, the tough part is synching the slides to the music. iMovie 4's Bookmarks feature makes that pretty convenient. Here's one approach:
    • Be sure iMovie preferences are set to "Enable Timeline snapping" and "Play snap sounds". We'll use those features later to help fit the slides to the music.
    • Import the audio first. Save.
    • Set iMovie to timeline view.
    • Next, we create a series of bookmarks that matches the beat of the music for the entire movie. As the music plays, hold down the Command key (Apple key) and press the B key wherever you think a change of slide feels appropriate. There are no rules. You want a change of slides when it "feels" right. Don't worry about adding a few too many bookmarks; you can ignore some later.
    • Play the music from start to finish, watching to see if your bookmarks still look right. If not, close the project without saving, then redo them. If they look right, Save.
    • Create the leading title, if any. Set its length to match the first bookmark.
    • Turn off Ken Burns (so stills aren't rendered into clips). Set the KB duration to something convenient to work with, like 5 seconds. Import the first image.
    • Using iMovie's nondestructive editing, drag the right end of the image to match the second bookmark. Our preferences will cause iMovie to snap the slide to the bookmark.
    • Repeat with each new slide, dragging it to match the next bookmark. Note you can import several slides together, place them in the order you want, then drag each to fit the bookmark.
    • Play the movie occasionally to see if it looks right. You want to get it right the first time for it's hard to go back.
    • After all the images have been added, everything should play with the proper synch. Now you are ready to start your real editing.
    • Where you want image animation instead of a still, swap the still image for an animated Ken Burns zoom/pan of that image. Click on a thumbnail and turn on KB. KB will default to that duration. Configure your KB zoom/pan and Apply, which converts the timeline still into a clip (if it has animation). You can edit that thumbnail as many times as you need.
    • When all the clips are done, we're ready to add transitions. Note that some transitions add new frames to a movie, which is NOT what you want. They will mess up your synch. Try Overlap, which does NOT add frames. Set the Overlap duration to whatever you want, then apply it between two slides or, if you wish, to all the selected clips.
    • If there are stills that were never converted into clips be very careful burning the DVD. Do NOT press the Create iDVD Project button. That renders the stills into very poor quality clips with lots of jaggies. Instead, manually drag the project.mov into the iDVD window.
Hope I haven't missed a step, but you get the idea. It's probably a good idea to try this first on a small project.
Karl Peterson’s Recommendations for Higher Quality Stills in iMovie
To get started, here's an overview of key factors affecting image quality. To maximize still image quality in iMovie 4.0, try this:
    1. In iMovie preferences (playback quality section) turn on both "High quality (better image)" AND "Enhanced video playback". Otherwise the movie iMovie sends to iDVD is not best quality.
    2. The minimum image size is 640x480 for NTSC (768x576 for PAL), but anything larger should be okay.
If you plan to zoom in with the Ken Burns Effect, increase the minimum size accordingly. If doing a 2x zoom in Ken Burns, double the size. If doing a 3x zoom, triple the size. (You want to avoid Ken Burns upsampling the image.)
    3. For image quality on the DVD, force the Ken Burns Effect to render your still while importing. For rendering to occur, you must configure Ken Burns to create an animated zoom or pan.
    To force rendering, do this:
    a. Turn on the Ken Burns Effect.
    b. To discard (any) previous pan, press the Start button and drag the zoom thumb all the way left, then press the Finish button and drag the zoom thumb all the way left.
    c. Click the Start button. Wait for any animation to finish. Drag the zoom thumb to 1.02. (Do not type in the box.)
    d. Click the Finish button. Drag the zoom thumb to 1.00.
    e. Drag the Duration thumb to 10 seconds. (Which may be more than you usually need, but start there.)
    f. Press the Apply button or drag the image to the timeline.
    g. After the clip is rendered, trim off the last second (or more, if it's not needed). That's where all the zoom is. What's left is a very high quality "still" clip of your image.
If you add transitions, trimming may be unnecessary. The transition may hide the zoom.
Note: after applying this settings to a clip, clicking on that clip will cause KB to adopt these settings for the next import.
    4. Set iDVD preferences to burn the DVD at best quality.
    EXPLANATION
iMovie will offer to render UNrendered stills when you click the "Create iDVD Project" button. That's when iMovie renders a very low quality clip, containing lots of jaggies. That's NOT what you want for your DVD. Instead, you want a clip rendered by the Ken Burns Effect, which has great clarity.
Note that Ken Burns does NOT render a still when:
    a. Ken Burns Effect is turned OFF; or
    b. Ken Burns Effect is turned ON but there is no animated zoom or animated pan. That's why we apply a small zoom.
Using a small zoom-out animation causes Ken Burns to put all the zoom at the end, where it can be trimmed off.
Stills rendered after clicking the "Create iDVD Project" button cannot be improved. Re-import using the method described above.
This describes a way to include an iPhoto slideshow in an iMovie HD project.
    WHY USE iPHOTO?
Photo 5 lets you easily make great slideshows. You can automatically include very high quality random Ken Burns Effects on all slides, for example, and include several nice transitions not offered by iMovie HD. You can override default slideshow settings for individual images. (You can't add titles, of course, and include multiple songs, which is why you may want to use iMovie HD too.)
    SUMMARY
The iPhoto slideshow will be exported to an MPEG-4 movie (720x480). To better prepare that movie for import into iMovie HD, it will be opened in QuickTime Player Pro and exported to a different movie format. (QuickTime Pro is required, $30 from Apple.)
If you don't have QT Pro you can import the MPEG-4 movie directly to the iMovie HD DV project, but the quality of titles and transitions won't be as good. If the background video of titles is flawed, create titles over black, which will look fine. Placing titles over nom-animated still images also helps avoid problems, so if you know which images will receive the title, turn off Ken Burns for that photo in iPhoto and increase the play time to accept the title in iMovie HD.
    MAKING THE iPHOTO SLIDESHOW
    Create a slideshow in iPhoto.
    KEN BURNS
To include a random Ken Burns Effect for all images:
    • Click the "Settings" button.
    • Turn ON "Automatic Ken Burns Effect"
(Note you can also adjust the KBE below each image.)
    TRANSITIONS
To set the default transition between slides:
    • Click on the "Settings" button
    • Choose a default transition.
(Note you can also change to a different transition below each image.)
    AUDIO
To avoid audio problems later in iMovie HD, it may be best to NOT include music in the exported slideshow. Rather, import the song to your iMovie HD project.
If you want iPhoto to export the slideshow to fit the length of a song, here's how:
    • Click the "Settings" button.
    • Turn on "Fit Slideshow to Music"
    • Click the Music button and select the song.
    • After importing the iPhoto movie to the iMovie HD project, extract the audio.
    EXPORT FROM iPHOTO
Choose Share>Export, 720x480. iPhoto will export the slideshow to an MPEG-4 movie. Except for the dimensions, there are no other export options.
    EXPORT FROM QUICKTIME PLAYER PRO
Open the MPEG-4 movie in QuickTime Player and export to a QT format better suited for iMovie HD. (QuickTime Pro is required, $30 from Apple.)
    - Choose File > Export
    - Choose "Movie from QuickTime Movie" from the popup menu.
    - Click Options. In the Movie Settings window that opens, click Settings.
    - For NTSC, choose "DVC/DVCPRO-NTSC" from the top popUp menu, set Quality to Best, set Frames per second to 29.97.
    - For PAL, "choose DVCPRO PAL" from the popUp menu, set Frames per second to 25.
    - Click OK.
    - Back in the Movie Settings window, click Size.
    - Click "Use custom size", set to 720x480 for NTSC (720x576 for PAL).
CREATE YOUR iMOVIE HD "DV" PROJECT
    • Create a new iMovie HD project of the "DV" type. (Choose the project type in the disclosure arrow at the bottom of the dialog where you name the project.)
    • Import the QuickTime Player-exported movie to the project. (Or the MPEG-4 movie from iPhoto, if you skipped the QT export.)
    • Add your music to the iMovie project. Add titles, edit the music track, etc.
    • If a DVD is your goal, now is the time to burn it. If you see problems played on a TV -- pauses or audio problems -- try exporting the iMovie HD project to a "Full Quality" movie, then drag THAT movie to the iDVD window.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Whats the best external drive setup for FCP and accompanying software?

With all the external Hard Drives out there I am hoping that other users could suggest the best options when setting up FCP to work with an external drive. I am working with both SD and HD and am planning to use DVD Studio, Soundtrack Pro along with Motion and AE.
With all the info out there claiming to be the 'best' it gets a little confusing. I bought a 2T WD HD with Firewire 400, 800 and eSATA connections. With the amount of footage I have to capture this wont last long. And the intention is to archive this footage and making it easy to access in a year or two.
Which is best type of connection? Firewire 800 or eSata? Any Suggestions as to a really good external hard drive set up that I can add to as finances allow?

Not quite sure what this question has to do with Qmaster, but what the heck.
The simple response is get the fastest and biggest external you can. If you are getting a drive mechanism without swappable disks, purchase 2 mechanisms - 1 for use when editing and the second for backing up. Purchase a 3rd drive to back up your system drive.
If you go the swapable drive bay route, you'll pay more for the mechanism but you'll recoup the cost as you can purchase additional bare drives for a fraction of the cost of another whole mechanism.
The fastest connection speed is esata then FW800 then FW400. USB is not appropriate to editing video (but can be used for simple backups).
If you have the resources, something like a Caldigit HDOne is a high performer. If that's out of your range, look into their VR line or something from MacBurley. Granite Digitial also makes good basic devices.
    Have fun.

An unknown error occurred (0x80092013) what the **** is going on  from last six month i am unable to access i tune store?pls give me solution which should help me to shortout this problem as soon as possible. i have not expected this from apple

I have been trying for months to put iTunes on my laptop and kept getting installation errors in Windows 7. I gave up and just installed iTunes on my PC running XP.
Now I have to install Quicktime on the laptop and once again I get an installation error 0x800736FD.
All windows updates are fine, none failed.
I have removed all apple software from my laptop using CCleaner, common files and folders. Tried reinstalling and still the same error.
Could you offer any advice on how to get both quicktime and then iTunes working??
    Thank you in advance

  • 720x480 != 640x480... What the **** is going on?

    I've got a 720x486 non-compressed QT that I want to translate to a 720x480 DV QT.
In Compressor (3.05), Cropping is set to: 4x3 1.33x1 and Dimensions: 720x480 and NTSC 601/DV. Compression is set to DV/NTSC.
When I open the newly created QT in Quicktime Player, it says that it's 640x480. In the Finder Get Info, it says it's 720x480.
What the **** is going on? I've done this many times before. Why won't it create a 720x480 like I've told it?
    Crazy...

    DVD, Web & archive.
I'm a commercial director and for years (before HD) I would save every spot in DV format (I know it's not the best, but...). It made it simple to throw a reel together in FC.
Lately, as more spots are HD, I've been saving them as HD size in Apple ProRes.
But I still have to deal with all the SD spots for throwing them on a DVD and also converting them to a web format (typically H.264).
I'm open to suggestions, but this has been working pretty well.
Again, I don't know why Compressor won't create a 720x480 version when I ask it to. I tried it in Quicktime Player and it does the same thing. I've NEVER had this problem before.
    Anyone?

  • Will FCP tell me what the 'correct aspect ratio' is?

    Hi,
    This isn't a problem, I'm just curious.
When I import clips in to FCP I am allowed to view them in their correct aspect by checking 'Correct For Aspect Ratio' using the 'Window Zoom' button in the canvas.
Is there a way of seeing the correct aspect frame size in the browser?
For example, I shoot in 'squeeze' mode on my DVX100b. That footage is recorded/imported at 720x480. FCP allows me to edit it as it should look. And then it's up to me to 'un-squeeze' it. That's fine, no problem. But I'm wondering if final cut pro has any idea what the un-squeezed frame size should be (or is it just automatic) and does it tell me anywhere.
    Just wondering.
    Thanks,
    Double ohh

The unsqueezed size is 720x480, and you'll see it in the browser under "frame size" (you may have to enable this by control-clicking on the top of any browser column).
If the anamorphic column is checked in the browser, you'll always get a correct display in FCP. As you've discovered, you'll have to modify your output files (either by changing the frame size or changing the movie properties in quicktime player) to get them to display correctly on a computer screen. Your DVD or video player will always display widescreen material correctly once you've authored your disks in widescreen and set up your DVD player to match your TV screen aspect.
    Best of luck.

  • What the HECK!  FCP decided to go bonko on me!

    Hello:
so i've been using FCP 4.5 with my Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 for a couple of years, running fine...no problemo. Two days ago I started a new project and everything now is slow. If I render a slow motion...slow. If I add an effect...slow. Is there a way to know if a processor has gone berzerk? I have used FCP Rescue to trash the preferences. I have even re-installed FCP 4.5. Still it is incredibly slow. Whats the doodle? This is driving me nutz!

The cron routines run every morning at about 4am. There are Daily, Weekly and Monthly routines. The first time you run MacJanitor, it will probably take several minutes to run everything, but it shouldn't take more than 10 or 20 minutes, I wouldn't think.
Since you're running FCP 4,5, the best combination is Mac OS X v10.3.9 and QuickTime 6.5.2. When I run Software Update, I select Install & Keep Package from the Update menu. I think that's called something different in v10.3. The idea is that SU will install the updates, but also save the update file in the /Library/Packages folder on your boot volume.
If you do that, then you can copy all those files to another volume before doing the Erase & Install, so you won't need to download them again.
Yes, Erase & Install wipes the boot volume clean before doing a fresh and new installation of the OS. During the Install, when it gets to the Type od Install step, click on the Option button and choose Erase & Install.

  • Couldn't write on the firmware???What the ****???

I'm sorry for my English, I'm italian..well, this morning I buyed my new iPod (60gb) and I follow the istruction for installing software on so on BUT the videos won't get into the iPod!The format that I try to put on are: mpeg, quicktime, move and other but NOTHING!Then I restored my iPod but the software said "impossible to restore the iPod, impossible to write on the firmware" and my beautiful coloured display change into the black and white way with the folder and the exclamation mark...good, it is?
Now I try to restore the iPod with my boyfriend's eMac and now it functioned. BUT the videos still work into iPod and now also in iTunes!!!What the ****?????
Thanks a lot for any suggestion!

    Solutions:
    Try this:
    I had the same issue, however I used this program to transfer ...avi,mpg,wma..etc...;
    http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/
    If the program is used the converted files will be in a folder called;
    C:\Program Files\videoraipodConverter\vodeos
I'm pasting this from the Videora site, the settings worked for me when others didn't, enjoy:
    Configuring videora converter
    0) Start Videora iPod converter.
    1) Click setup in the left nav.
    1.5) Click the profiles tab.
    2) Click new profile.
    3) Now, configure that profile:
    profile name: ipod
    in the video settings section...
    mode: MPEG-4 > CBR
    resolution: 320x240
    passes: one
bitrate: 768 kbps (384 kbps also works)
    framerate: 29.97 fps
    in the audio settings section...
    bitrate: 128 kbps
    sample rate: Input
    channels: stereo
    4) Click apply to save the profile.
    Now, you're ready to transcode.
    1) Click convert on the left nav.
    2) Click the transcode new video button.
    3) Pick your source video. Mine was an AVI from a torrent.
    4) Under quality profile, choose "ipod", the profile you created using the steps above.
    5) Click start.
Now you're ready to get the video on your ipod
    1) In iTunes, under the File menu, select add file to library. Find the transcoded one. By default, the transcoded videos pop out under the Videora install directory.
    2) Drag and drop to your ipod.
    Questions/observations:
    1) I haven't been able to get H264 anything to work. Is it broken? How much smaller than MPEG4 is it?
    2) 768 kbps video was about 400 megs/hour; 384 kbps video was about 231 megs/hour. I could readily see a difference in video quality.

I am not a computer savy person.  I just need to plug in and have the machine do what it should do.
Not a problem, but that indicates you have a lot to learn.
File extensions like mpeg, mp4., avi, wmv, etc. are just wrappers. It is like a box the audio or video content is placed inside. The audio and video content must be encoded with a codec before it is placed in the box. There are thousands of codecs. Not all are installed on your Mac. You must have the same codec installed that encoded the video in order to play it. So, while Quicktime does support mpeg wrapper, it may not have the codecs to decode the internal video.
Some programs have lots of the codecs available to them, like VLC, Niceplayer, MPlayerX, etc.
You can also get "plug-ins" for Quicktime that add codecs to Quicktime, like Perian. Although it is no longer being developed, Perian still works well.
Why is it so difficult? Probably because they are always working on ways to compress the video to get better playback.
