Qmaster: The only reason to keep my G4
I have been learning the programs of Final Cut Studio for about 4 months now. Until I upgraded to a Dual 2ghz G5 recently, I was using my good 'ole G4 867mhz. I am thinking of selling my G4 to get a new monitor. The only reason I can think of to keep it is to use it for rendering via the qmaster program. Would this even make sense or is it more hassle than it's really worth, given how much slower my G4 is? Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.
We have eight dual G4s which we have configured into a QMaster cluster with G5 as the server. The G5 dual 2.5ghz is fast but you can definately see the additional rendering capabilities of the cluster as each node is tasked and begins it's rendering activities. I can't say that it is as fast as "real time" but I recently converted 114 MOV files to WMV using Compressor 2 and our Qmaster cluster. It took less than 2 hours to run the entire batch. The last time I did this it was an all night job.
Our G4s range in speed from 867ghz to 1.42 ghz speeds. I'm not sure what kind of impact that has but we have also set up a separate GBit ethernet subnet for this "render farm". It is fast enough right now to justify keeping our aging G4s before investing in a hardware rendering solution at a several thousand dollar cost.
Then again I don't need real time rendering either so a slower workflow is oke with us.

Running that utility will erase any music stored on it. An iPod shouldn't be the only place your music is or be considered a backup device.

I've read similar questions and have studied the answers, but I am still terrified to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard on my macbook pro. The only reason for doing it is in order to sync my macbook pro with my iPad. I do have an external drive which automatically backs up every hour. BUT.......I am techno-ignorant as well as techno-paranoid. I have the disks to update to snow leopard but knowing doing so may likely change/alter/lose/obliterate my current set-up, it actually makes me feel sick to think of it.
Years ago when updating via Apple Protection Plan tech support, my screen actually went blank, everything gone! The tech told me not to worry, that "we" would be able to restore things, but several hours later I was still looking at a primitive looking screen that wasn't anything like what I had before. His language was too technical, in that there was an assumption I understood things I had zero understanding of. Example: partition my external drive.
Anyway, living hundreds of miles from an Apple service provider, and no Apple techs in my community, I had to wait for a trip to an Apple Store where one of the wonderful guys at the genius bar spent a ton of time getting things back to normal and actually explaining it enough that I had a vague understanding.
So now I am in the predicament again and won't know what to do after installing the new disks and finding a likely mess or absence of documents etc. on my computer. I don't know how to access the external drive, and even if I did I wouldn't know how to move stuff from that to my computer.
Anyone have any suggestions?I'm in the same boat as you, I've used Mac's since day one and neglected my Windows education and now it has come to haunt me as I have to learn it like a school kid.

You can't run a older OS X version longterm like you have with 10.5 anymore, Mac's are being targeted for attacks and older OS X versions are dropped for security updates.

1-1.5 years is the OS X upgrade cycle. Change everytime like it or not.
So I'm thinking about your long term future and how you obviously don't like change, need local assistance like it appears you first claimed.
So buy a new Mac and upgrade your OS X version whenever Apple shows it in AppStore.
When your machine can no longer upgrade to the newest OS X version, then you've got about another 2 more years of security updates before you have to buy a new machine or risk running a insecure one.
Learn here how to go about fixing your own machine and creating backups/bootable clones this way your not having to drive several hundred miles for a software or boot drive repair. Simply reverse clone your troubles away.

I'm of the maturity and experience that I know a Mac isn't always the best solution for everyone and even Apple doesn't provide the proper hardware, support or features for everyone. Why only store locations in high traffic ritzy areas?
Our SteveJobs fan here is under 18 years old with good eyes, he's not older like we are with bad or failing eyesight.
The new Mac's have hard to see glossy screens and the type/UI can't be scaled up easily to accomadate our older eyes, however a Windows 7 machine does allow up to 150% scale of the UI, type etc., and also there are anti-glare screen PC's and just about no more anti-glare screen Mac's.
I wrote this User tip in case you have trouble seeing the screen, at least you can scale the web browsing up

Apple might still be selling the anti-glare 15" non-retina on their online store, it's the "high resolution/anti-glare model"
But I can get a 17" 1080i HD anti-glare Windows 7 laptop at Sager for a lot more performance and screen size for the price than a Mac.

Screen size is important as the UI and text can be scaled up for easier reading.
Of course you do now have the option of having Windows pre-installed alongside OS X to begin your transition to the dark side.

Is the only way to keep a behaviour's setting after finish via a keyframe
Is the only way to keep the final value of a movement behaviour (ie scale, thow etc), once the behaviour ends but the element to which the behaviour was attached hasn't ended, by converting the behaviour to keyframes?
I can see no other way, although I hope there is one, such as a hold frame or something like that?
Thanks in advance.There's a "End Offset" slider in most behaviors, adjusting that will create a hold value at the end of the behavior. You'll have to extend the behavior's length in the timeline by the same amount as the End Offset to keep the original animation before the hold.

Is MS exchange the only way to keep mail synced across all devices? Can Mac mail do this without exchange? I have iPhone,iPad and new MacBook Pro, and looking for advice please.
As Bob says, any iMap service can do this. GMail can, iCLoud mail can too.

Hello Nokia, I've been a costumer of Nokia for a while now (3310) was my first phone.
I loved the N8 in theory and bought it as soon as possible and got over 6 months of waiting for updates that made the phone somewhat usable. in that same time frame other companies announced amazing devices then launched them , it really felt like my phone was out of the synq with whats cool/useful with the constant hangs and bugs.
then came the N9, it was by everymean a complete product on arrival with less bugs than any Nokia i've owned and in the first 3 months, it got all the firmware updates that made the experience amazing and i felt i used the phone to it's full potinitial and never was afraid of openning a certain app or activating NFC or Nokia drive , Never was i worried that i would hook it to a charger and wake up only to find it dead and unresponsive and have to reset the phone ...
Now that I own the Lumia 920 i'm always making a choice between my usage of Games and NFC and my phone not dying on me .
My phone died on me so much this 2 weeks and the only thing i could think of as a reason , is everything worth a damn , if the back of my phone got just a little bit hot , a while later it will die without me noticing.
Yesterday i bought the wireless charging plate from Nokia, i put my phone to take a power nap , and went to sleep , woke up and apparently my phone just swallowed its tounge and died AGAIN , and the battery isn't even fully charged when i woke it up.
Since i live in a Saudi Arabia and the return policy is just 3 days , and since Nokia Care in Saudi would only flash it with the same software.
Nokia , Microsoft is failing you in the one thing you got on board with it , faster updates ...

Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;

If the iPad is an older model or one of smaller capacity, try fully unloading it before running the app as a test.
Double-tap Home so the list of loaded apps shows up, then terminate all by swiping upwards on each. This does NOT erase anything. Tap Home to finish when the only item left is the home screen. Then do a force-restart by holding down Home and Sleep simultaneously until the screen goes dark and the white Apple logo appears, then wait till it finishes starting up. -
Moving the playback window is the only way to keep video from stuttering
I have a problem where video stutters every second or two. The playback will freeze, audio continues to play, and then the video will unfreeze to sync with the audio. It always fixes when I reboot the computer, but only for a few days. Then it returns. Simply logging out and back in does not fix the problem.
The biggest clue, it seems, is that the stuttering does not occur if I click on the player window and move the window around. It plays just fine while I'm doing that, but the moment I stop moving the window, even with the mouse button still held down, the problem returns.
It happens with all video players, including Quicktime player and VLC.
It happens in all 5 logins.
It happens with all video file types.
It happens reading from both my internal drives and my external firewire drive.
I have 21 gigs free on my 160 gig HD. Even when I freed up more space it didn't help.
TechTool reports no problems with any subsystem (video, memory, etc.). I tried swapping RAM and even buying new RAM and still the problem occurs.
I tried repairing permissions and checking the drive for errors.
I've spent hours trying to find a solution to this problem. If you have any suggestions please let me know.
(Yes, I posted this problem a while back in a separate topic, but I got nowhere so I thought I'd try a different topic subject)

so is there a reasonable price to bring a 27" imac to israel why wont apple help people from israel who wants reasonable prices it costs double here wich is 10,000 shekels and this is not reasonable and to take it by plane or send it is really difficult.(if i take it by plane i wont want to check it in as over size i want to carry it on because the way they treat peoples item they toss around and it is going to break for sure and apple isnt making it any easier
So as I mentioned earlier it is up to you to look for a reseller willing to work with you. There isn't a thing we can do to assist you, unfortunately that is the cost of doing business. I empathize with your plight but you're pretty much on your own. If you want to visit a country where there is an Apple Store then you can do that. Living in Israel I believe you would need to travel to Europe for the closest store. Factor in travel, shipping, duties, and local taxes you will probably find it is easier and less expensive to deal with your local reseller. The license resellers sign with Apple does not allow them to ship out of their area so you cannot find a reseller that is willing to ship out of their area.

I was so much after the ipad mini..
but released with the non-retina display and this put me down a lot and I didnt buy this one at all.
Now I am looking one but with a larger screen and where i can use that as a phone around 4.5" min.
ThanksThere are a few "phablets", small tablets that are also phones, but Apple does not make one. Thus far these "phablets" are not proving to be very popular, but if you think one would meet your needs, by all means look into them.

As clearly stated on the Apple website, Siri is NOT available on the iPhone 4. iOS 6 does NOT install Siri on that model. If you want Siri on abn iPhone, you need to upgrade to the iPhone 4S or 5.

I have great difficulty with remembering what I've just read due to the fact that I have adhd and other learning disabilities and I use printed material to help me using programs,software etc.I can swap out drives and motherboards when the power supply goes south but thats it.I would love to use mozilla exclusively but I have yet to find a traditional printed user manual any where at any price.I'm pretty sure I'm not alone...thanks
Ubuntu has a book but still coudn't make any sense of it so I gave it to the friend who encouraged me to try the program.He certainly didn't the book but his idea of fairly straightforward was so much different than mine.
