QoS - Why DSCP AF-41 for Video

Guys,
I wanted to ask the forum one question why DSCP AF-41 marking is used for Video. I know Cisco designed and recommedded it in that way, but is there any other technical reason behind it?
Cheers,
Sugata

Hi Sugata,
Firstly as you may know already, traffic marking are done to classify traffic into different classes according to the priority so that they are meted with a different behaviour. It ensures smaller and critical traffic does not get stuck behind bulkier traffic which may not need priority.
Among the real time traffic, audio is the most critical. The Cisco recommended markings are according to the priority of the traffic type. Voice has a higher priority than video. Video is further separated into two categories - Interactive (Video conferencing etc.) and Streaming (playing a unicast or multicast video). The order of priority and reason for that is below:
1) Audio - Voice traffic is very sensitive to packet loss, latency. It requires no packet loss and latency of about 150 ms.
2) Interactive Video - Sensitive but can tolerate packet loss of about 1% and latency almost same as voice
3) Streaming Video - Less sensitive - can tolerate about 4-5% packet loss and latency of about 4-5 seconds
So it’s a general guideline\standard from Cisco to mark voice with a dscp 46 or ef, Interactive video 34 or af41, Streaming video as dscp 32 or cs4. Since this is Cisco recommended best practise, Cisco's most UC apps by default mark the traffic like this.
You can change it but strongly not advised unless you have a very good reason. Another reason not to change is some of the auto templates etc. you can normally use at access level catalyst switches use these markings, which otherwise you will have to manually change the mappings etc.
Hope this clarifies - if you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

  • A philosophical question - why does FCP 'Prepare for Video Display'?

After using it for years, I suddenly pause to wonder:
    What is it doing?
Why do some cuts require it pretty much every move you make, and other not?
Do I need to change the way I use FCP to reduce it?
I'm quite messy while I assemble, a lot of dragging around, a lot of layers of un-used material on the timeline...
    Any gentle guidance gratefully received.
    TJ

Yup. Sequences with tons of cuts will do it and sequences with large still images will do it. I have 2 gigs or RAM and usually only have the problem with the large still images but once in a while a cutty sequences will do this as well.
    I know--"Buy more RAM, it's cheap!"

  • QoS and DSCP settings for Video Streaming

So I've got this beautiful topology at home that consists of three WAP 121 and a RV320 as the default gateway.
How should I tweak their QoS and DSCP parameters to optimize Video Streaming applications like YouTube, Netflix and such?
    Thanks community!

Open the set up page of the router by typing the IP address of 192.168.1.1 or open Cisco connection go to router settings
Then go to advanced settings and  then click copy password and hit OK ..once you on the router page
Go to wireless and click manual after that create network name (SSID) Then set the wireless security as WPA2 personal
Which would give you stabilize connectivity then upgrade the latest firmware on  the router and reduced the MTU to 1462..
Unplug the power from  the modem and  the router
Wait for 1 minute and plug them back wait for 1 minute and then check the speed .

  • Configuring QoS on Cisco 3845 router for Polycom Video Conferecing

    Dear All,
We have implemented a Polycom Video Conferecing solution at our Head Office. Using this we communicate with other branch offices through WAN (2mbps, MPLS).
The problem is that this WAN link is also used for data. When the traffic is high on the link, the voice and the video quality goes down drastically and we experience connection drops.
At the moment we have configured our Polycom box to communicate at 512kbps speed and we would like to reserve it in our WAN link. In case, video conferencing is not happening we would like it to be utilised by other traffic.
Can we configure QoS on our Cisco 3845 router to do this? I'm not a Cisco expert and have pressures from Management to correct this before the next conference.
I have already googled a fair bit but couldn't find something for me.
Could someone please tell me the exact commands that need to be given on our router to achieve this.
I'll be very thankful for this help.
    Best Regards.

    Hi,
You can use something like the following to guarantee 5122k of bandwidth to your video-conferencing bandwidth but to allow that bandwidth to be used by other traffic when it is not being used for video-conferencing:
    class-map VDOConf
    match ip dscp af41
    policy-map WANPolicy
    class VDOConf
    bandwidth 512
    interface
    service-policy output WANPolicy
Note that the above assumes that your video conferencing traffic is being marked to AF41. If that is not the case, you can always match on the IP address of your polycom device using an ACL:
    class-map VDOConf
    match access-group 101
    access-list 101 permit ip .....
Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.

  • QoS for Video Data

    Hello Together,
I like to implement a QoS Policy class to prioritise "Windows Netmeeting". Does somebody know the well known port number and can somebody recommend an bandwidth that i should provide at least to this class ?
    Thanks in advance.

As you can find in the Netmeeting IP ports table below, netmeeting uses dynamic ports for Video streaming. So I am not really sure how you can configure QoS for the same.
Anyone has a good tip to achieve this.?
    Port Purpose
    389 Internet Locator Server (TCP)
    522 User Location Server (TCP)
    1503 T.120 (TCP)
    1720 H.323 call setup (TCP)
    1731 Audio call control (TCP)
    Dynamic H.323 call control (TCP)
Dynamic H.323 streaming (RTP over UDP)

  • Why does mls qos trust dscp dissapear after reboot?

The command takes but after reboot, Invlaid inputs detected show up and "mls qos tust dscp" is gone from every interface.
    Happens on both 2960-24PC-S / 2960-48PST-S switches.

    Hi,
    thanks for your reply.
    mls qos
    interface GigabitEthernet3/34
    description *** DATA VLAN 35 - VOICE VLAN 34 ***
    switchport
    switchport trunk native vlan 36
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 34,36
    switchport mode trunk
    mls qos trust dscp
    no cdp enable
    spanning-tree portfast trunk
If i don't include the global 'mls qos' command then the voice packets keep the dscp 46 value.  If I add the mls qos command this causes the switch to set the dscp values to zero.
    Thanks again
ps.  there are some other mls commands on the switch... i don't know if these could interfere but they were already on there so i'm reluctant to remove them..

There's a program called "File Manager" that lets you move/copy and delete files from your device. It's usually under Tools.
If you put videos in "My Videos" folder I think they don't show up in the Gallery. Also files in "Videos" don't show up in Video Center but they do in the Gallery.
What do you mean "memory search"?,
About the little shield, I have no idea what it means. I guess it's about the DRM protection, but I'm not 100% sure.

  • QoS config for Video Traffic

    Hello all,
I have a campus network with several remote sites, at the campus I have a 6509 at the core and 3560 and 3750 switches at the access layer. I do have QoS enable on the 6509 and I am using auto QoS on the 3560 and 3750 switches and all seems to be working fine with my existing VOIP environment. But now as I am in the middle of rolling out a video conferencing solution with the existing QoS config I am experiencing a noticeable delay between audio and video. Example like during a video call I can tell that the voice and the lips of the person speaking are not in synch.
Has anyone run into this issue ? can someone provide me a sample QoS config for the 6509 and 3560/3750 switches ?
P.S. I am using a Tandberg/Codian solution for video conferencing with Tandberg/Codian MCU, IP Gateway, ISDN Gateway and Tandberg endpoints. And both the endpoints and the back-end infrastructure devices and are set for IP Precedence 5.
Thank you very much in advance !!!
    Danny

The main concern with configuring your back-end infrastructure devices with IP Precedence value 5 is that the 3560/3750 auto-qos will map this value to Q1 which is ordinarily the strict priority Q.
In most cases auto-qos will also configure or map Video to Q3, you can see this as a majority SRR bandwidth is assigned to the Q.
In order to use the strict priority queue, it has to be enabled on the interface 'priority-queue out', without it Q1 will not be emptied before the others. It will be serviced according to the weight.
With auto-qos Q1 will not have enough bandwidth as it will be assigned to Q3. Therefore you could initially enable priority-queue if not already enabled so that Q1 is emptied first, or you increase the weight.
The next question is whether you are using egress scheduling within the Core? and this conforms to your edge classification for Video?
    HTH.

  • Using 3750 switches & 2821 router for video & http qos

    Hello all,
I know that the 3750 switches and 2821 routers are aging platforms, though, was curious if it they are capable of providing QoS for video (such as WebEx) and HTTP/HTTPS, in addition to voice traffic?
    Thanks

    Thank you Reza.
One reason we're looking into this, is that we wanted to see if we could give priority to traffic destined for, and arriving from, certain servers  (in addition to certain classes of traffic).   Is that possible?  Most of our switches have IPBase images (12.2(55)SE1).
    Thanks

Why has the download/buffering speed slowed down for videos?

The problem is with your router, your internet service provider or you have a marginal connection with your router.
Locate your iPad close to your wifi router and see if the problem persists.

  • Why do I get the error message for video chat only with a select few?  :(

I've been trying for weeks trying to get video chat going to a few people with my invitation for video chat timing out and giving me the error message. At first I thought it may be the other people's systems, but they told me I was the only one in their list that this happens. With a few people it works just fine; is it my setup? I have an Airport Base Station connected to the DSL modem and running WIFi in the house and a Power Mac G5 with ethernet going to the Base Station.
Please give me an heads up what might be the issue. Thanks in advance!!!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
So we have DSL Modem <-> Base Station <-> Computer connected by Ethernet.
    Is the Modem Routing ?
Is the Base Station set to "Share An IP" ?
(i.e are there two DHCP servers on your LAN ?)
Is Internet Sharing On in th G5s System Preferences > Sharing pane ?
In the Base Station is Port Mapping Protocol Enabled if it is doing routing ?
It is in the NAT tab of the Internet Pane.
Is the G5 also doing WiFi to the Base Station ?
Also check the Modem is not Blocking PINGS as this log shows no PING (But I am not sure it even got that far)

  • Your opinion - why should we (or should we not) use flash as our primary platform for video delivery?

    Hi,
I work at a college that is delivering courses online at a
distance. Currently, we are using a Windows Media Streaming server
as our main platform for video. We definitely want to be able to
stream, as our students are from all over the world and have many
different connection speeds - from t3 all the way down to dial up.
With Windows Media Streaming, we can configure the video at
multiple bit rates, within a single file, to address these various
speeds. The file is delivered at a speed appropriate to each user's
connection. We can also choose to force authentication for any
given fie, while still having most of our video clips available to
    anyone.
We are currently evaluating our setup and looking into
various options. A lot has been said about Flash. I would love to
hear pros and cons for using flash as our primary platform. I have
heard that one advantage to Flash is that there is a way of setting
up your files, so that no player is needed. I would also like to
know if that is true. I sense that it is not - I had removed flash
from my computer, and could not play anything with a swf extension.
As I would suspect, my computer had no idea what it was without the
    flash player installed.
I have also heard that the concept of streaming is inherent
within the Flash technology - that Flash files will automatically
stream in a similar manner to our current setup, where the speed
and flow of the delivery is dependent on the user's connection. Can
    anyone comment on that?
Additonally, we would need a separate server, as we do not
want anything conflicting on the server where we house our Course
Management System. Is there anything to be aware of with this type
    of setup?
Some of the video files that we use would need to be limited
to a certain audience - (due to copyright and contractual issues).
Is there a way for Flash to handle such issues? With Windows Media
STreaming server, we can opt to have any file require a username
and password. this requires manual addition of these credentials to
the server though, and is not a very efficient approach.
Please feel free to add any additional comments that you
think might be helpful. Thanks for any information you can give me.

  • Basic qos for video using mqc

I have two 2800 routers connected via T1. I need a basic configuration for prioritizing my video using MQC and LLQ.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
you have to build only 2 priorization-queues. One for Voice and one for Video (with lower performance).
The third queue will be a wfq-queue with lfi to be sure that big-packets are not reasons for bad voice or video.
the signalling should be in the voice-queue.

  • Why cant  i search the net for VIDEOS only

In  Elements 9 it was  possible to search the net specifically for VIDEOS.   This facility doesn't seem to be available in elements 10.
Is there anyway around   this  problem  or am  I missing something???
    Mike

By "searching the net" do you mean looking for tutorials in the inspiration browser? If so, the video tutorials can now be found at tv.adobe.com.
