Qosmio F20 - Display problem, possible driver issue

Good afternoon,
I am in posession of a Qosmio F20 type notebook, which belongs to a friend. She told me that the screen went all matrix like then was just blank. She claims not to have installed any software or updates recently.
When it is turned on, the Qosmio logo on a black background appears, then a black screen with lots of white lines vertically down it appears. It then brings up the Windows XP logo, but this time with green lines appearing vertically down the screen, a bit matrix style I guess! After this the screen goes completely blank, and the laptop will either reboot itself, or occasionaly I can hear it boot into windows.
I can enter into safe mode and view everything fine. If I uninstall the driver, it works fine and boots in as normal, then prompts me for a display driver. As soon as I install the driver which I have downloaded from the Toshiba website (NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600), and reboot, the same problem occurs. If I install the driver then choose not to reboot, it is ok. But as soon as I go into display settings and try and change anything, the screen goes instantly blank again.
I tried rolling back to an older driver which was dated 29/08/2005 v7.8.9.2, but still the same problem.
Can anyone suggest a possible solution for this? Or is there an issue with this driver that I am not aware of? The OS is Windows XP Media Center SP2. It has been working fine until yesterday morning apparently.

Hmm... really bad situation. As far as I know the warranty cannot be exchanged after an hardware problem.
The motherboard replacement is not cheap! You will have to spend a lot of money to get the motherboard replaced.
As you know, the board is a most expensive notebook part!
Anyway, I presume only the authorized service provider would be able to replace the board and to help you.

I had to format my HDD in my Qosmio F20-137. Then I have reinstalled operative system (XP) and all drivers I found on Toshiba support site. But I can't find any driver for the sound card and thus my PC is now soundless (except the beeps from the PC speaker).
Where do I find the right driver?

It is very easy to find the driver. You must search in archive and check for drivers listed for WXP MCE.
Anyway, the right sound driver you can find HERE .

[stow] perl problem: Possible precedence issue

It came with the last perl update that I am no longer able to run stow.
I already reinstalled the package but it still fails with the following error:
Possible precedence issue with control flow operator at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/Stow.pm line 1736.
Does someone know how to fix this issue?

It looks like it's just a warning that doesn't actually affect how it runs. Anyway, I know almost nothing about Perl, but this patch silences the warning:

Surface Pro 3 Display/Video/Graphics Driver Issues - DisplayPort, External Monitors, Windows 10 Build 9926

Surface Pro 3 - i5 with Intel HD Graphics 4400
Windows 10 build 9926
All Latest updates installed
Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.15.4079.
Latest system update released on Jan 22nd (which I understand is just the latest intel graphics driver?).
The display driver status has this error message: Windows has stopped this device because it
has reported problems. (Code 43) - I assume it's
reverting to the basic Microsoft driver when this occurs. Which explains why my displayport (External monitors) will not work.
I have uninstalled the driver completely (and deleted the driver files), tried the Windows basic driver,
and rebooted several times with no luck.
I cannot get my docking station displayport or the displayporton my surface pro 3 working.
According to Microsoft (see below), this is a known issue UNTIL you update to display driver
version 4079 - which I have.
Known issues on Surface after updating to Windows 10 January Technical Preview
On Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3, the Mini DisplayPort won’t work on the Windows 10 January Technical Preview until you’ve installed graphics driver 4079 or later. Check Windows Update often for the most recent graphics driver.
On Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3, you’ll notice poor graphics rendering on the Windows 10 January Technical Preview until you’ve installed graphics driver 4079 or newer from Windows Update. Check Windows Update often for the most recent graphics driver.
If you’re using video driver 3496, you may need to start in safe mode and remove that driver. Then restart Surface in normal mode and go to Windows Update to get the most recent graphics driver.

Possible drive issue

I say "possible" because I think I've ruled everything else out. I have a 20GB U2 special edition. Recently it began freezing up and, on restart, displayed the Apple iPod support URL. I've re-partitioned and formatted with Disk Utility then Restored software numerous times. Each time I think it's fixed I launch iTunes, the updating begins, the transfer is painfully slow, then, eventually I get a read/write error and have to force quit.
To rule out the computer, I went through the same steps on a different computer only to have the same results. I even went into Diagnostic Mode to check the drive with the read/write and scan options. They both passed. So now I'm in drive mode trying to transfer files directly. It claims that 6.78GB will take 4 hours to complete. It took 10 minutes just to transfer 37MB. And we're talking Firewire! It eventually timed out with an error.
One other clue is that checking IRAM in Diagnostic Mode caused a freeze.
Have I missed something? Does this sound like a replacement drive is in order? Will I be wasting my time installing a new drive?

iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

After two days of trying I somehow managed to revive my iPod. First, I re-partitioned for PC. Next, I reformatted for DOS and zeroed all data. Just for kicks I repeated the process for OSX extended. Finally, I ran Restore. It restored very quickly. I still wasn't convinced so I Restored several more times. This time when I updated my iTunes library to the iPod it transferred very quickly and without any apparent pauses.

by default the display is set to medium - 125%
I am running a play card app and i notice a problem on the display, the display of widows on the app is set to medium- 125% but the picture inside the windows remain small - 100% so the app is not displayed correctly
(to download the app GAME ALBLOT)
other problem on gamezer website the happy faces is not displayed correctly
to avoid this problem i reduced the dispaly to small - 100% but comes very small

Well, I don't think Toshiba forbids installation of any non-Toshiba applications at all ;-)
The OP has the problem that some apps won't display correctly when using a non-standard font size. This always is a problem in Windows, although it got much better in Win7.
I wouldn't recommend any other fontsize than 100% scaling. If that's too small for you, try a lower display resolution. The image quality isn't really than but you might switch it for applications as you like.
Sorry, but maybe the display resolution on this model isn't suitable for your eyes :-(

InDesign 5.5 Text layout problem--possible preference issue

I do a lot of book layout and recently upgraded from InDesign CS3 to 5.5. I've encountered a problem when I'm editing the text layout
When I make changes to one paragraph (i.e. change the spacing above or below a head or change leading in a particular paragraph), InDesign is automatically changing the word/letter spacing in the lines of the following paragraph. For instance, I added some space before a head. InDesign automattically shifted the spacing of words and letters in the first lines of the following paragraph instead of just shifting all of the text down. In another case I changed one word in a paragraph, and the letter/word spacing changed in the following paragraph.
This is unacceptable and didn't happen in CS3. How can I turn off this "function" ?

What I think is happening here is that you’re editing a layout done in a prior version.
When you open it, InDesign honors the prior text composition but the second you start to edit the new text engine takes over.
You can export the document out of CS3 as INX and open that which will force all the text to recompose at once and you can get it all over with or stick with CS3 to finish up this job.

T60p video problem (not driver issue)

I have a T60p (Model Number 8744-C9U). It has a ATI graphics chipset (exact model unknown).
Few weeks ago I had a Fan Error. I found a replacement fan assembly with help from this forum and replaced it. The replacement seems to have gone OK and I do not see the Fan Error on boot up. Heat is also being dissipated from the vents at the side and back.
But, the video on the LCD seems scrambled. I tried an external monitor with the same results. I can make out some letters sometimes but for the most part the graphics is wrong.
During initial boot, I can enter the setup screens and can read most of the screen fine. The laptop has Ubuntu on it and I can see the Ubuntu logo (though not 100% clear) as well. After that the screen is scrambled.
I tried to test with PC Doctor from the Lenovo forum. Most of the tests pass. I tried the video test as well and it seems to work, except that the lines or block are not clear.
Any suggestions on next steps? Could the graphics chipset be fried because of the earlier fan issue? Could I have done something wrong while replacing the fan assembly.

IMac Finder problem - possibly BootCamp issue

Hi all, AppleCare don't work on Sundays, so I'm getting a bit desperate!
My iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) is up to date running Snow Leopard and has BootCamp installed running Windows XP. I tried to boot into the PC this morning and it looped back to the Mac. Now, I get no response from the Finder - I can't force-quit applications, none of the keyboard commands are working. The mouse will track around the screen, but I can't click on anything. All I can do is hard restart. I've tried booting it in safe mode, and get as far as the login screen, but the keyboard won't work so I can't enter the password (the mouse will track around the screen, but I can't click on anything). I tried changing the target disk to boot into the PC and it went back to the Mac again. I tried booting from a CD to reinstall the OS, and the computer just keeps booting without accessing the CD. When I took my finger off the "C" button, it booted to the Mac with no Finder at all.
Any thoughts?

Oh, okay. Resetting the PRAM has done the trick. I hope.

The HTC hotspot works fine with everything else I connect to it.
Also - ipad will not connect to my HTC via bluetooth. Again, I can connect to everything else with my HTC other than my ipad.
I have to say this is my first venture into Apple products and I have always wanted to get away from my windows based laptop to get a MacBook, the problems I have had (flash player etc) & continue to have (as above) are putting me right off swapping over. I HATE technology that doesn't work and my ipad has been hard work!

I stated my ipad as being an ipad2, but I now think it is a 3??? It was new Jan this year and is the 64gb retina display version.
I really would like to get to the bottom on this problem wit mobile hotspots as it is sitting on my desk next to me now and I cannot get it to connect to my HTC mobile hotspot!!!! It might be taking a flying lesson soon at this rate!!! Grrrrrrr...........

Problems with a Qosmio F20/390L Network/Ethernet controller

Display and driver issues with Windows 7 on i5 MBP

Hello-
I just purchased one of the i5 Macbook Pros, and set out to get Windows 7 working through boot camp. I did this on an older model (32-bit) previously with no problems.
This time around, installation of Windows worked fine, but I have had some trouble getting all the drivers working. The setup.exe program on the OS X DVD didn't want to run at all, I had to do a workaround from the command line that I found on a forum (otherwise I just got a response of "Bootcamp x64 is unsupported on this computer model").
Eventually I got (at least some of) the drivers to work, but there are still some issues.
After installing the drivers, things like brightness and two-finger clicking started working. A number of other things still aren't, though:
- Display: My machine has a 1440x900 screen. But for some reason Windows refuses to go higher than 1280x800.
- Network: No wireless at all. Windows doesn't detect any wireless capability, and only gets on-line via ethernet.
There may be other issues, but these are the big ones. Can anyone provide suggestions on what to do to get everything working?

I just used winclone to move my Win 7 from my Core2Duo MPB to an i5 MBP and had to do a few updates and have eneded up in pretty much the same place as you. I won't bother installing from scratch. I'm guessing we just need to wait for some bootcamp updates for these new machines.
For those of you who are looking to migrate your bootcamp partition over, winclone made it easy - I followed the directions for resizing and Win7 boots, does a disk check, then installed many of the new drivers automatically. There are some drivers that are still needed however, wifi and video. I also so a USB driver issue but have to look at that a little closer before I comment.

Ogre 3D 'glGetString' Problem, May Be Driver Issue

I'm relatively new to Arch Linux, all I did till now was install it and get X running with the 'awesome' window manager. I must say, I like it, especially pacman, AUR and ABS.
I'm a hobbyist programmer and I generally write graphics applications (games) with Ogre 3D. I decided to get Ogre 3D and build it. I got the latest SVN HEAD, and built it, it built fine. However, when I run a sample, I get the following error (which occurs right when it tries to create the GLX subsystem):-
OgreGLSupport.cpp:57: virtual void Ogre::GLSupport::initialiseExtensions: Assertion `pcVer && "Problems getting GL version string using glGetString"' failed
I've run Ogre 3D applications both on Windows and Ubuntu on this very same laptop, so I don't think its a hardware issue. It may be a driver issue though. I have 'xf86-video-intel' installed, and hotplugging turned off with "AutoAddDevices" "False" in xorg.conf. 'lspci | grep VGA' gives:-
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
It is possible that it's an Ogre specific issue, but I still thought I'd mention it here because it could also have to do with drivers and other configuration stuff.
To check whether glGetString() works, I took the program from the second NeHe tutorial and modified it to spit out glGetString results, and it says "Vendor: Mesa Project, Renderer: Software Rasterizer, Version: 2.1 Mesa 7.2".
I've also run some other graphics applications (the Bullet physics engine (which I just built today) demos), and they run much slower than how they did on Windows and Ubuntu.
Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it?

Humnn... I don't know. How I "solved" it today: downgrade xorg-server to 1.5.3, catalyst to 9.4 and kernel to 2.6.28. Now I have my game working again. I think it was only a problem with the driver... I'll try to upgrade asap.

Qosmio F20-136 - Boot from USB Hard drive

Dear All,
Is it possible to enable the Qosmio F20-136 to boot from a second hard drive connected one of the USB ports? I know that you can hit F2 during the boot to get 4 different boot options, but this isn't one of them.
