Qosmio F50 series - Slow boot up time

My laptop is just one day old. Why is the boot up time so slow. On Windows it takes forever to get past the "Please wait" screen, about 1-2 mins. Is this the case with everybodies.

BIOS update results in slower boot up time

I have an HP dv5 laptop running Vista x64 SP2 with an Intel duo core 2.53GHz CPU with 4Gb of RAM. The BIOS was version F09A up until yesterday, when I happened to notice that the latest BIOS available is F21A. I checked the prior BIOS updates and noticed that F16A had an update for supporting SP2. I had already updated my system with SP2 earlier this year and didn't notice any issues, but I figured I should do this anyway. I flashed my BIOS with F21A.
The update worked fine. However, I noticed my cold start up time to be considerably longer, perhaps 25-50% longer. So, rather than continuing with this I rolled back to the 2nd latest firmware that noted SP2 support, version F16A. Still, I have the same kind of sluggish start-up.
I don't really understand why this is happening. Is it normal for BIOS revisions to affect boot up times like this? I'm wondering if I should just roll back to F09A... but now I'm worried that this may trip something up, going backwards like this. Everything was generally working well before this...
Any advice?

I'm definitely noticing a slower boot up time after upgrading my BIOS. Is it OK to roll back to the previous BIOS I was using? Is it a 100% fresh "reset", or is it possible it may not be completely as before?

Slow boot up time on new Macbook Air

I just got the new Macbook Air a day ago and have already experienced significantly slow boot up time. It takes about 3-5 minutes to get to the log in screen. I know when it was released, it was boasted that it only took seconds to start up after being turned off. Any idea on what I could do to change this or what the issue is?
Also, I just switched from a PC so have very limited knowledge on the Macbooks.

Try Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Qosmio f60 14q, slow boot

my laptop has an extremly slow boot time so i downloaded soluto to check if a program is causing it and after multiple tests it takes 4-5 mins till i can use it. so i used the hdd recovery and reinstalled windows 7. and now it takes ~3 mins to boot. also soluto showed that the"system" takes 40-60 secs to open which is high compared to "weaker" machines in my house (~18 secs)

Can you see the HDD details in the BIOS?
Check this access the BIOS (press F2 while booting) and the HDD details should be mentioned on the first page.
If the HDD is not listed...well then the HDD is faulty

I have read the various threads regarding slow boot up times, on my 2009 MBP it takes 1 minute to get a usable interface but without doing anything else the HD is active for a further minute, is this reasonable ?

My MBP after the Lion upgrade takes 1 minute to put something usable on screen and without doing anything else the HD is active for another minute.
I have visited the Genius bar where they went through some maintenance routines and permissions repaired etc but the boot up time remains the same.
I have cleared the cache as suggested in other threads but is this the best I can expect as with SL the computer booted up in about 30 seconds ?
I recall reading there may be unwanted programs loading at boot up time but I do not know where to look in the system to check.

I use my MBP for working on and storing my photographic images following my Photoshop adjustments, these individual image files are between 50 to 60Mb, I was reading about OSX self defragmenting files below 20Mb, these files are not intended as start up items but do you think storing approx 200Gb of these files could be having so effect ? I am a fromt end user so my limited knowledge is restricted to repairing permissions etc. I am probably clutching at straws but it be better to store these images on an external HD in addition to my backups on other HD's.

Slow boot up time after attempts to speed it up

I recently found my Macbook starting to run slowly so as with what I did every now and then with Vista I erased the hard drive and re-installed leopard. That really didn't help just a pain for not being able to use the computer for about a day.
I know you have to keep about 15%-20% of your hard drive free but I have 148.73GB hard drive and I have 85.14GB free so well above the 15-20%.
I reset the PRAM yet that has caused it to slow down even more. What I think the main problem is finder. Once I log on it takes an age to start running or that could be an effect from a slow boot up. I don;t have any log in items so that can't be causing any problems, so what other ways are there of speeding it up HELP!!

Restart your mac:
Safe Boot: Hold down the shift key after the chime until the Apple logo appears and the gear is moving.
It will take awhile but you will be asked to login.
Go to your Applications folder> Utilities and launch Disk Utility.
In the left side column, highlight your drive, select First Aid and repair permissions.( button down below)
Empty the trash.
Restart your mac.
If that doesn't help run Onyx using the settings in the screenshot

Slow Boot up times W520 - HELP!

Hi All,
I can't take it any longer!!!
I just timed my W520 boot up time into Windows 7.
60 seconds to welcome screen
80 seconds till desktop
180 seconds until everything appears to have loaded at bootup (by this I mean even when the desktop appears it's clear windows is still loading bits and pieces and the system doesn't feel entirely usuable during that period).
After that, everything seems fine and feels very snappy.
However, those boot up times can't be right can they??? It's madness. My boot in Mint Linux on the same laptop takes no more than 20 seconds and I'm at a usable desktop.
Any pointers on how I can end this boot nightmare?? (p.s. I do have rapidboot installed).

My W520 hits desktop at 23 seconds and will load IE/Maxthon by 40s. Firefox chugs in at 60s, likely due to my bloated profile.

If you are indeed on spinning media, try defragging it.
Also updating to the latest Intel Rapid Storage driver (11.5 as found here: http://www.station-drivers.com/telechargement/intel/sata/intel_rst_11.5.0.1171beta(www.station-drive... sped up boots for me)

Slow Boot Up Time for 13inch Macbook Air?

I just bought the $1199 Macbook Air (2012). It works great but the start up time from when I hit the power button is significantly slower than my 2011 Macbook air. My 2012 takes about 35-40 seconds to boot-up. My 2011 takes about 15-10 seconds. I have downloaded all the updates and restarted several times but every time its still 35-40 seconds, Is this normal for the 2012's? Thanks.

Gbowen.. i had the same problem .. i found this to be the solution:
"If your computer starts up after a brief delay or displays a question mark while starting up, you may need to select a startup disk. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and select a disk."
I selected macintosh (although it was the only disk there & then restarted... now boot up is 10sec instead of 40 seconds.. WOW!)

Slow Boot Up Time on 2012 Macbook Pro (i7)

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro (8 GB RAM, i7 Processor, 10.8.3) and it takes just over a minute to boot up and get to the home screen. I have a 130 GB Bootcamp partition with 45 GB free space and four login items (BetterSnapTool, Yoink, Dropbox, Alfred 2).
I have tried all of the following and nothing has changed considerably:
     -No icons on desktop
     -500 GB of disk space free
     -Ran all Maintenance and Cleaning scripts in OnyX
I was reading this post and I have posted a two minute timeframe from the time I turned on the computer. Can someone please advise me on what might be causing this delayed start up?

Try Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Slow boot up time MacBook pro 20mins+

My 2012 13inch macbook pro is taking about 20-30mins booting up before I can open any application or folder. Once it's done loading I can open an application and everything is fine then it randomly slows down and freezes/loads for 30sec to 5mins. I have lots of free ram and my cpu usage is low. I don't have any application to launch on boot up. I have about 300gb free on the hdd.
I have booted into recovery mode and used to disk utility to repair the disk and it says it ok. When I relaunched it seemed slightly faster but still took around 15min to boot.
I'm thinking the hdd is failing but the disk utility says its ok.
Is there anything else i can try? Or should I just go ahead and replace the hdd?

Well start up or waking up MacBook seems to be taking longer & longer!
why? my research so far says Lion upgrade and also a suggestion to go into permissions and clean up cache. no idea how to find Permissions or what todo regarding cleaning up 'cache'. please help with simple step by step directiions.

Slow boot up time and I want to fix.

I am running 10.8.2 on my macbook pro that is a little over a year old. It could just be me but I remember when it would bot up in a matter of seconds....now it seems to take its time which is ok but if it can be faster I would love that. I have a lot of material added lately to my itunes which consist of music and videos right now but photos will soon become managed through that as well. So if anyone can help I will appreciate this. I have three quick questions to ask:
1. My MacBook (bought in late 2008, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 160 GB HD, running Leopard/10.5.8) boots up quite slow. It can take a while to boot up and shut down.
Question: What should I do to reduce the boot up time?
I haven't done a clean up for a while, and am a MacBook newbie (after 4 years, still) for the tools. I think I need to remove some applications but don't know exactly how. Also I am looking for stuff like System Defragment / Compression (tools available for Windows OS) to tune the hard disk performance, if possible.
2. Sort of related to this slow boot-up time - should I bother to upgrade to Snow Leopard (pay $ 29.00) and then upgrade to Lion (another $ 29 ?) for some 250 new features that I am not exactly sure if I will need it (or my 2008 MacBook can handle it well)?
My friend has a 2011 MacPro which he let me use it for a while, so I think I am already using Lion, but frankly I can't tell much difference from the user experience (am just a very average Mac user!).
Question: Should I bother the money and the time (I heard the downloading and installation time for Lion is very long) if all I care is boot-up time?
3. One last question - How long can my MacBook last? Is there a way to find out the battery life? Any indication that my MacBook might be on the edge of its life cycle anytime soon?
I heard that typically the life for a laptop (PC or Mac) is 2 years. I am not a heavy user, and I guess that's why my MacBook is still alive after 4 years. But should I expect that to be failing any time soon?

I'll try to make it short but with your questios, might be impossible.
I own both late 2008 MB Uni with 2Ghz and a brand new late 2011 MBP 13 inch.
I have lion running on both Macbooks with no slow down or issues.
The late 2008 I upgraded to 8GB Crucial DDR3 Memory and 320GB Seagate Hard Drive. Total cost to me? $140 CDN ( i live in Canada ).
My MB Uni's battery has 1047 cycle count and I still get 3-1/2 - 4 hours of battery life depending on what applications I'm using.
As for typical life of a PC or MAC ( I own both ). The PC's life is shorter than a MB. I have a 4 year old Dell Vostro that I had to do a RAM upgrade so Windows 7 would run properly.
My late 08 MB had 4GB of RAM when I upgraded to Lion with no issues. i just decided to go 8GB because it was cheap.
A 2GB MB will boot up and run faster than a 4GB PC with windows 7.
Nothing is obsolete if you can still do your stuff on your MB.
To make it boot up faster, see what's loading on startup and take them off if you don't need them.

My fix for slow boot after Leopard Upgrade

I was having the same issue as a lot of others in posts about extremely slow boot up times after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple Support but in the end I stumbled across a fix for my situation.
After power up and getting to the login screen (about 5-6 seconds), it would take about 3 minutes to fully populate the desktop after entering my password. Most of that time just sitting at the login screen. Extremely painful.
My MacBook connects to a Windows Active Directory network. I was able to fix my slowness by disabling the Active Directory service. I was concerned at first but my bound volumes still work. I don't use a lot of AD services from my Mac so I at this point I have not found any issue with this fix.
To disable, go to Directory Utility, select services and if you have Active Directory enabled, disable it.
My boot time increased from 3 minutes to less than 15 seconds. Better than Tiger.
Tech Support is aware of this issue and has reported it the OS team for a fix.

If you don't have a Tiger volume to test on, I would consider such as an important troubleshooting step

There are no issues with the AGP slot in relation to an OS version.

Slow boot up after 10.6.8 issue resolved?

OK here goes. It's not really a question. Just to get your attention about how I may have figured out why my iMac was having slow booting problems. As much as 6 minutes long! It seems after reading somewhere online about issues with Norton Security software not being compatible with Lion, I decided to uninstall it and voila, it seems to have fixed my slow boot issues thus far. I've been dealing with problems with the whole booting process ever since my computer auto updated itself to 10.6.8. So if this helps anybody else, you may want to consider this option. I got this "free" security software from my Internet provider, (Xfinity) if that helps. It could be that other anti virus software might affect your slower boot up times. I'm back to a reasonable minute or less on boot ups now. Not sure if I actually solved my own problem. I hope so. I haven't tried out my printer or other peripheral except Time Machine which was helpful when I had to reform my drive because of all of this. Who knew, right?

Run ALL the cleaning and maintenance features of the free OnyX and reboot, should regain some speed there too.
Carbon Copy Cloning your boot drive to a external powered HFS+journaled drive, hold option and booting from it, checking it out completely, then reverse cloning back onto the internal drive, booting from it, then running all of OnyX again will also speed up the computer (with a hard drive) as it optimizes the drive.
