Qosmio F50 very dim display issue

Hi everyone
Recently my Qosmio F50-10z has started suffering a very weird problem. Often the screen goes absolutely dim. I can see a very very faint image if I concentrate very hard. External monitors when connected stay well lit and bright. The most weird bit is that when this happens I have to literally slam the lid shut and open the lid immediately to make the screen light up again.
I know it is either the inverter or the screen cable. My question is how do I find out whether it is the VGA cable or the inverter and where do I buy the part from!
Please help!
Thanks!

In my opinion its an FL inverter issue since the picture on the external monitor is ok.
The FL inverter controls the display backlight and the issue sounds like FL inverter malfunction.
You can purchase and order all compatible parts from an local ASP.
The authorized service partner would be helpful and could also replace the part.
I would recommend this because notebook disassembling is very tricky.

  • Qosmio G40-108: starange display issue with highest resolution

I just got mine but on its highest resolution all webpages have these 11 semi-rectangular blocks, barely visible, only the bottoms, each about an inch long, is this normal and should i send it back to be investigated?

    Hello
It is very nice to hear that you already have newest Qosmio notebook. About your issue I can not say much because without one screenshot it is not easy to understand what you mean exactly. On my Qosmio G30 (with the same HD resolution) I have no problems at all. Because of that I can really not understand what is wrong there.
If possible post a link where we can see how it looks like. Your description is not enough.
BTW: have you noticed this on web pages only?

  • Black/very dim display

The screen is almost black.  You can barely see it, but has it not usable.  You can't see any part of screen during bootup.  Display on HDMI works fine.  The screen started to have lines, and now has gone dark.  Computer works fine.  I replaced the screen (panel) and there was no change.  It appears there is no inverter, so I have no idea what to do now.  Computer is almost 2 years old.  It has 1366x 768 resolution, AMD processor and ATI Video.

It is perhaps the flex cable. The screen may not have been bad. The only way to tell is to replace the cable.

  • Qosmio G50-10h - strange display issues

My Qosmio G50 was running less brightly for a few months, then experienced intermittent fault whereby Qosmio logo would show on the screen, then the windows logo for a split second, then the screen would black-out completely. Restarting or hitting function f5 might resolve the situation. Now the problem has become permanent. I cannot get the screen working other than to show the qosmio logo, then a bit of the windows start up, then black-out.
I have been through the maintenance manual and options are Inverter? Screen? fluoro? System board? That is the question... Without all the spares, it's difficult to determine what is the cause... I Have an inverter on order but they have sent two wrong parts and when the right one does eventually arrive i am not sure that's going to cure the problems
Really need to use the computer. Your thoughts and assistance will be greatly appreciated
    Kind regards
    Simon Riley
    (ironysmile)

    Macius, thanks for your thoughts...
I tried f8 at start (don't know how to do the bios thing)... The f8 resulted in a black screen which I was able to flip into working for a second by pressing fn f5 twice (switch screens and backs again)... This cause a slight fizzing noise from the area of the inverted and then blackout again... Did this a few times as start up took place and then it stopped working and was irretrievably blacked out
Does this help narrow down the search any further?

  • Ipod w/ dim display

My iPod 3rd gen. has a very dim display. Adjust the dimmer setting has no effect.

Try the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPOd
If you still have the the problem then an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • T500 display very dim , possible mechanical failure?

    Hello,
It seems that my T500 LCD display has become very very dim, the display is barely visible.
After repeatedly turning it on/off it suddenly was able to display full brightness during one debug session... I even restarted it / shut it down multiple times, and it worked. HOWEVER, it seemed that the brightness was dependent on the angle at which the LCD was hinged, if I opened it all the way the screen became bright again (something over 90 degrees), if i started to close it (roughtly 30 degrees?), it became very dim. To me this sounds like a mechanical issue, possible a loose cable. Unfortuantely, I was not able to reproduce this again after this debug session, I suspected that as i was transporting it to/from work i may have changed some internal mechanical configuration.
Is there an actual 'mechanical' switch which drives the LCD brightness depending on the angular position of the LCD? I tried reading through the service manual here:
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6630_04.pdf
I couldnt find any mention of any sort of LCD brightness mechanical hinge switch
    === other info===
From googling, the issue could also be :
    a) inverter issues
    b) backlight issues
    c) fuse on mother board?
As a quick test, i hooked up the VGA output to a secondary monitor and that works fine, so long as I go to the BIOS and set it to boot to the VGA first as the primary display.
    Any suggestions would be great!

Try going into the BIOS and switching to Integrated Graphics only. Does the screen still remains dark/dim?

sounds like you broke the display when you dropped it.  There's nothing we users here can do for you.
Since the iPhone warranty does not cover accidental damage, you will have to pay to have your phone repaired or replaced.  You can bring it into Apple for an out of warranty exchange in the country of purchase, or you can find a 3rd party iPhone repair store in your area.

  • Card Reader issue on Qosmio F50-10Z

I have had this issue for a while, It began with the original os Vista 32 bit, so i decided to buy the toshiba upgrade cd for windows 7, after upgrading everything worked fine, except the card reader, no matter how many times i installed/uninstalled,installed the driver it would not work!.
So I used the recovery cd, not once BUT TWICE, and to no avail i sent it off to repair.
I got a message on a piece of paper telling me it would work on the original os, i thought they had fixed something.
So i used the recovery cd yet AGAIN, and to my short lifted excitement of seeing no yellow explanation marks i put in a micro sd card (2gb) which initially worked when i first bought this laptop, and got no response.
The bigger problem is my warranty is now finished!, So basicly i have been BUMPED OVER, cause the memory card slot is NOT WORKING, and it wasnt an software related problem!
    Any reccomendations?.

    Hi karimtarek,
Which driver version you are using on Vista and Windows 7? My Qosmio F50 is running Windows 7 and Im using driver version 1.00.29.02 from the Toshiba page.
Are you using the same version?
Furthermore it would be interesting to know if the SD card slot worked after you got the notebook from service center back. Have you tested this before or have you started recovery installation immediately?
Have you tried different brand of SD cards? I always use SanDisk Extreme cards because they never made any problems.
Furthermore you could try updating the BIOS. Maybe it works if you using a pretty old version
Last but not least if its still not work and you think its a hardware malfunction, ask the service centre again. If you speak a little bit with technicians, maybe they can repair it as a gesture of goodwill.
    Good luck! :)

  • Qosmio F50-108 - Front operation panel issue

Hello, I have qosmio F50-108 and the front panel does not work me, I think I uninstal a program. Please link to the driver. thanks akem
    sorry for my bad english

    Hi Akem
Sorry but I dont understand what you are meaning exactly by front panel?
Do you mean the Toshiba Control buttons like (play, pause stop, etc)
If you are meaning these buttons and if you have removed an drivers which controls these buttons then a solution should be easy.
First of al you should try to set the OS back to the early time point before you have removed this driver. For this you have to use the system restore utility.
Secondly if the procedure described above will not work, try to reinstall the VAP (Value Added Package).

  • EMac Still Humming Along - Display Issues Though ... Any Help?

I have a strange display issue to run by the forum here:
Obviously my 2002 eMac is going to be suffering some display issues
with the age the Mac is and all ... but besides the slightly "softer" screen focus
(due to aging tube), I only have one other constant issue with the display.
I know the brightness and contrast are not what they used to be when the eMac
was newer, but here is the issue I am having. At least once a day now (after a few hours
of use), I seem to be constantly adjusting the "brightness" and "contrast" setting to get the
screen to a very usable brighter white field color. Normally now, the screen will get kind
of "dim gray" and less "contrast white" ... without any brightness or contrast range left for
me to adjust (the brightness and contrast settings in the system preferences/display pane
    are usually maxed out).
To kind of fix this, what I've noticed lately, is that if I open the system preferences pane
and go to the "display" settings, lower both brightness and contrast down to the lowest settings,
then close out of system preferences .... then open system preferences again, and adjust the brightness and contrast up to slightly higher than the normal middle settings .... the screen brightness and contast are better and I have more "adjustment range.
Here's my question: What would be making the "brightness" and "contrast" settings come back to
a more "normal state" by performing the above sequence? I once thought the screen display was
getting older and as a result, dimming normally. But now I am thinking that it may be more of a "software" issue that isn't keeping the brightness or contrast settings in hold.
I pretty much perform all the basic maintenance procedures on a regular basis (ie: Permissions,
repair, disc repair/check, DiscWarrior directory repair/check, etc.), so am I missing anything
    important here?
Any thoughts or ideas what is happening here, or how to make the "brightness" and "contrast"
    hold their settings longer?
    Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks

One other thing to look at is the setting in System Preferences, Universal Access, *Enhance Contrast* slider to make sure it is set to normal before you make the adjustment in Display.
Have you ever tried calibrating your screen? It can also be done under Display?
Generally an increasingly darker display is hardware related caused by heat, as well as the aging of the tube as you have indicated.
I used to like cleaning out the dust from the interior of the eMac periodically using a large soft artist's brush to dust and a running vacuum cleaner to suck up the dust as it flew. Most dust accumulates on the fan blades and it always seemed to run quieter afterwards, though 'quieter' is a relative term on an eMac.
The only tricky bit to this operation is the micro plug that connects to the power button. It is very small and fiddly to reattach.
Only consider the above course of action if your are naturally happy with opening electrical equipment and realize it must be completely disconnected from any power outlet before you even start. Otherwise don't do it if you feel unsure.
Your problem is unusual in your saying that it appears to be software related, from opening and closing your Sys. Prefs dialogue. It makes me wonder if anything is corrupting that file, and the settings it contains? It is peculiar.
I wonder if deleting that particular file would help. With System Preferences closed, in Finder locate,
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
and drag it to the trash.
It will be recreated next time your open Sys. Prefs.
I doubt if that will be the fix, but you might as well try it. As an experiment, instead of doing your described technique, instead try trashing that .plist and see if it achieves the same.
Lastly when was the last time you replaced your PRAM battery? It is a cheap thing to do, and I mention it only because the PRAM chip does control some video settings and removing a possible aberrant voltage from the equation is a one more thing you can do.

  • Thinkpad W500 screen - seems very dim. typical? faulty?

Having issues with the apparent brightness of my Lenovo W500 (suspected Samsung display) in reasonable ambient light levels,  I thought I'd try measuring the lux with a tool I found at  ->http://www.tuug.fi/~toni/serendipity/index.php?/archives/12-Luxus-light-meter-desktop-widget-for-N90...  -- just for a more objective, albeit uncalibrated view on brightness.
In each case I placed the proximity sensor directly over the panel, so it was around 5cm "in" from the edge & displayed an all-white window.
    Here's my rough results
    Lenovo W500 (full)                            R=083 L=063 T=060
    Dell 2005fp desktop (normal)                  R=151 L=155 T=142
    old? HP 17" 4:3 (normal)                      R=157 L=143 T=180
    Dell Studio 15 1920 laptop led (in dark room) R=104 L=111 T=110
    Dell Studio 15 1920 laptop led (full)         R=214 L=212 T=226
    Dell Studio 17 laptop led (full)              R=300 L=314 T=297
    ? HP 19" unknown (low lighting)               L=098 R=107 T=113
    ? HP 19" unknown (full)                       L=138 R=153 T=162
From this "comfortable" is IMO in the region 130-150 - the W500 fals way way below this.
    Has anyone else measured?
    What's reasonable?
I believe the spec is around 175-180 -- but that's obviously a calibrated test
The dell 2005fp is rated at 300 yet I score 150 above (though this is NOT on max, just normal)
The dell studio 17 is rated around 317 on full -- and the score above shows this as close
I can only conclude therefore my measurements are in the right ball park
The W500 is on full brightness & using the appropriate monitor.inf under win 7
What I should really do is have a proper colorimiter calibration and measurement done.
The "spec" of the W500 panel is 180-200 I believe - it's clearly not fair to use the numbers literally, but something is very very wrong.
Does this suggest my panel is faulty? To be honest I don't think I've seen a "good" W500 but I wonder if it meets the spec?
Anyone else fancy measuring a "current" laptop for comparison -- especially any other W500 owners (some of which have samsung panels, some have LG panels)

I no longer have W500 but I do remember screen being very dim. Notebookcheck measured a much higher value (130 on average?) even in comparison to other notebooks so I also suggest you try to get a replacement. I guess it is ok to use the manufacturer values when reporting a faulty screen.

  • Cannot Install Graphical Video Library 2.2 Qosmio F50

Hi, I'm looking for some help installed the Toshiba Graphical Video Library 2.2 update for Windows 7.
I done a clean install of Windows 7 ultimate on my Toshiba Qosmio F50-10Z, everything installed fine including the Flash Cards. But I have a problem installing the Graphical Video Library 2.2 update. I downloaded the Windows 7 GVL version from the support page and found that the update includes 2 folders 1.2 (?) and 2.2.
I've ran the 1.2 update first and installed ok, but when I try to install the 2.2 update it displays a dialog telling me that the installation cannot continue because the old graphical video library database was found.
Does anyone have any idea in how to get this update installed?
    Thanks

yeah, I've tried that as well, I've completely removed the older Graphical Video Library from the system, rebooted and then installed the latest GVL, however everytime I run the GVL it complains that there is a DB connection error and then exits the application. I've noticed that the older versions of the GVL had SQL Server 2005 installed, but the latest 2.2/2.1 doesn't do this, it just seems to install the application (with no TVRconversion utility either) which shows the error when run. Would really appreciate any insight into this issue.
    Thanks again
my login seems to have stopped working so had to create a new one, hence the different name

    Hey @teddyredhead ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand the display on your Chromebook is dim but works fine via HDMI.
Try performing a hard reset on your Chromebook by pressing Refresh+Power.
If that doesnt help try Performing a System Recovery on Your HP Chromebook (Chrome OS).
If neither of those help I would suggest contacting HP Phone Support for service options as the inverter or motherboard may be having an issue. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836.
