Qosmio G15 HDD failure - time for a system refresh - advice please

Hey Folks,
So it appears as though my C drive has died on my G15. I've managed to recover most of my data and I'm still running scans now. However I don't think I'll be able to trust the machine and have purchased a new hard drive. Now things go from messy to messier.
Apparently it's pretty easy to do a system refresh if you have some recovery CD that is supposed to come with the machine.
However the only recovery CD my laptop came with is the Qosmio Player Recovery. Not terribly useful since I don't use the player anyway.
So I'm now wondering what my best bet is? I've been open to trying Linux, or would love to go back to Win 2K.
However it seems like most of the drivers are for Win XP?
Since I don't have the recovery disc, it looks like I may have to go with regular XP Pro. Is that going to be a problem? Also there are tons of drivers listed on the Toshiba site. Are there any best practices for how they all need to go in? I've come across some threads here that suggest that the drivers need to be installed in a very particular fashion. I also noticed some threads alluded to threads which detail the XP installation process, but I could not find such threads.
I'm quite computer literate and mostly know what I'm doing. But I want to get this all right on the first attempt, not the 3rd or 4th, or 5th etc... I need to get this machine back up and running asap so I can get back to work. I've already spent a week doing drive scans and trying to recover what data I can.
I got really excited when I discovered there was a G15 recovery disc, and I might be able to do a quicker refresh than I had thought. Then very disappointed when I discovered that I never got one of these recovery discs with my cpu!
Thanks for any help you can offer!

My G15 AV501 (supposedly the top of the line when I bought it 3 yrs ago) has been in the shop or sent back to Toshiba for repairs (motherboard or HD replacement) 12 times. Yes. 12. The motherboard needed replacing 5 times and the HD, 4 times). And still, the hard drive made a whining or grinding noise during use. Now, after losing my data and putting in the Recovery and Applications Driver, it just froze and made a grinding noise eventually halting about halfway thru the installation. Great. I asked Toshiba for a replacement. Out of warranty. Sorry. Even though this is an ongoing problem since day 1. _*My theory is that the problem isn't the motherboard or the hard drive, I really think it's the motor or whatever device that spins or runs the HD.*_
So my question: I am trying to simply start over but all I can get is a black (dark grey) screen with a small white blinking cursor in the top left corner. The Recovery Disk will not load by itself. F10 or F8 key does nothing. Restarting with disk in/out... same result. How can I get the disk to load?
Also, did you ever get those recovery discs? I do have a set too I can loan you.

  • Looking for a web font - advice please

Hi, I know this isn't a DW question, but I'm hoping somebody might be able to guide me.
I'm looking for a font (preferably on google fonts) that resembles Edwardian Script. If anybody knows off the top of their head a font that is similar, could you advise me please?
    Thanks.

Please cite a case where a commercial website was sued for violating the fonts license?  In UK Harrods tried to sue a coffee shop for using Harrods fonts and they lost with heavy legal costs.  Fonts can never be patented and people are free to use whenever they can.
Some bully boys will try anything but people have to stand for their rights.  I am currently in dispute with easy Jet because I have registered one website with name like easy XXXXX.  Now they tried to bully me for using the word easy and I challenged them to sue me.  Their solicitors wrote to me and intimidating me and I won the first round.  They are appealing and so the case continues.  The court has decided that I should not promote the website until the appeal is heard but in the meantime, I have notified easy jet the revenue I am losing because of this restrictions. The court is aware of this and if I win the case, I shall be entitled to millions of pounds in compensation due to lost revenues.

  • Is it time for a new SSD? Please read my story, my battle with my M4 Crucial SSD

This is whats been happening the past couple of days and what I have been doing to try and isolate what is causing my fresh win7 install to have so many issues running. IMO, i've narrowed it down to be an issue with my SSD, and not my RAM. Please read, and advise.  So I changed out my p8z68 MB and ivy bridge CPU for a new maximus VII hero and Devils Canyon Haswell cpu. After installing windows I noticed it was running sluggish and would not install updates successfully or without crashing.Over 3 attempts of reinstalling win7 64bit. The build kept crashing, failed to fix windows startup, MBR error 01 or getting the BSOD. I firt tested my RAM... I ran memtest86 with 100% pass and found and isolated that  1 of the 4 x4gb of my Black Vengeance Corsair ram had errors on it (ram is 3 years old in use). I ended up taking those out and replacing with brand new 2 x 4gb Gskill sniper sticks I had still in packaging. I re-ran Memtest86 on the new RAM just to be sure and ....no errors.  I want to emphasise that by now I've reinstalled window 3 times on this build upgrade....noticing a lot of lag, in windows after fresh install . Especially when opening programs like windows update windows  as well as other things like, device manager or even a Web browser. If I have more than one window open. My hard SSD LED on my front panel, lights up  like it's busy, browser and programs freeze or I get a program "not responding"  error, on top until I wait it out...then it disapears.  Finally I did another OS install..this time and after much research,  I made sure to run a Secure Clean All, on my Crucial M4 SSD (it too has been used for the past 3 year). I had already updated its firmware to 070H a long time ago.  I also made sure I had the most current Intel, SATA, VGA, LAN, and sound drivers were downloaded.  Durring Windows update it reached 140 of 149 updates before receiving a BSOD again even with the new ram!  After Reboot... I went in and this time before running Windows update...again, I made sure all my services were closed and did a "CLEAN" Boot to windows. Doing this finally made my system able to dowload all the updates successfuly.  Ok so now that Win7 is fully updated, I got my antivirus ..norton on. More updates, with little  issue. But I still notice while my SSD is writing, I say thats what its doing when my computers fornt panel LED is flashing, that the program / software/ game im installing freezes, until it has a chance to "Catch up" , Or install fails, or for instance dowloading patches, updated to games..they have been failing oh and just now for the second time...SKYPE has disconnected itself giving me a I/O error. So these are all my symptoms and what I've tried. To my knowlege the M4 SSD model doesnt have any kind of software to help aid in determining its health . And is why I am here now typing to you all .  Is it time to get a new SSD?? What else can I try? Thanks, Christopher.

    Hi cswann821,
Is the system overclocked or with default clocks?
Note that your motherboard has two SATA controllers, Intel Z97 with SATA6G_1-6 red connectors and ASMedia controller also with red connectors SATA6G_E1/2. Are you using Intel or ASMedia controlled port?
What do you mean by 'Secure Clean All', what exactly did you do? It is probably not relevant to former issues but note that some tools do 'overwrite with zeroes'. It is not good for SSDs and works completely different than ATA command 'secure erase'.
Check what SATA port is being used and if it is Intel make sure what driver version is in use. You can check it with Device manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers -> right click on the selected controller -> Properties -> Driver tab
To check health of the SSD you can use CrystalDiskInfo. Please post SMART data of the drive - use 'Edit > Copy' option, just please remove drive's serial number.

  • Estimated time for a query execution -- URGENT PLEASE

    Hi,
I am interested in knowing the time of execution of a query before actually running it. Is there any stored procedures/methods that gives us this feature.
    Thanks.

Without actually running the query, there's no way to find out how long it will take to run. I'm not even sure that there's a theoretical way to do this.
You can use the v$long_ops table to see roughly how far along a long-running query is while it's running.

  • Time to upgrade to Xserve-Advice Please

    Hi,
I'm currently the default "IT" guy at my company. We are a small company without any kind of dedicated IT department. We started out 15-20 years ago with a single Mac and have grown throughout the years. We now have 16 stations with 4 of them being PCs. At first we had our network setup with a simple file sharing setup. When we need to share files, each computer would connect with which ever other computer we needed to. This worked ok for a while but then we had the problem of archiving all of our data. I would manually compile everyone's work on a specific project and back it up to an external hard drive. This was not the most efficient solution, but it was effective and we used this method for many years. We've recently expanded our business to include Maya work which is done on PCs. At the same time we introduced 2x 2TB Lacie Ethernet network storage devices. Now I have everyone working within the same folder on the Lacie drives. This makes my life easier as far as archiving. Part of the problem I've got now is with the PCs. We've had them for a few months now and I've never really gotten them fully integrated into our environment. I have a single PC at home, but the work environment has always been completely Mac based. Meaning I have some PC knowledge but really none as far as networking goes. I know that we need to get a server to accomplish a couple of different things.
    1) Better integration of PCs and Macs
    2) Improved Rendering for Maya (PC based Maya)-We are going to implement a render farm into the mix as well- we are currently looking at a Boxx system and an SGI system as well
    3) Central Storage with backup
    4) Improved speed (with the Lacie storage devices, there is some slowdown when first connecting)
    5) Remote login--i.e. something like the ability to login from home and set up a render over the weekend
I would prefer to go with an Xserve because of my familiarity with Mac products. My problem is that when I look at the specs for the Xserve, I really don't know what anything is. I have no idea how to price anything for the boss.
It makes me feel like I am getting in over my head, but at the same time, I am confident enough in my abilities that if I get the correct system set up, I should have no problem administering it for our needs.
    A) I imagine I'd want to go with the 8 core to start with
    B) What kind of performance boost-and in what areas-would I get with upgrading to the 2.93 or 2.66 GHz?
    C) I imagine I should get the most RAM we could fit into the budget?
    D) what is the Solid State drive? Do I need it?
    E) I can have 3 hard drives. How many do I need? why would I need more than one?
    F) Extra power supply..I understand why this makes sense
    G) XSan? what is it? do I need it?
We currently also only have everything connected via ethernet. What's the deal with Fibre channel? Do I need to install a Fibre channel card in each workstation plus run all new wiring? If so then this is a very pricey deal and way unrealistic as far as budget at this time.
I'm also wondering about the render farm. Will either a Boxx system or a SGI system integrate well with an Xserve when rendering PC Maya files? Would there be an option to configure an Xserve as a render farm? If so could I render PC Maya files on it?
Sorry for the long winded post. I'm lost and need some help from some experts. Hopefully there is someone out there who can lead me in the right direction.
    Thanks for your help.
    Phil

    Hi
    My two cents.
+I know that we need to get a server to accomplish a couple of different things+
Apart from load balancing etc you don't really mention anything that either a 3rd-Party product might provide and what you've already got in place.
+1) Better integration of PCs and Macs+
With the environment you're describing you don't specifically need a Server for this although it depends on what you want to achieve.
+2) Improved Rendering for Maya (PC based Maya)-We are going to implement a render farm into the mix as well- we are currently looking at a Boxx system and an SGI system as well+
Perhaps XGrid might fit the bill?
    +3) Central Storage with backup+
Depending on what Configuration you choose (Standard, Workgroup or Advanced) this could be easily achieved with what's already built in to the Server OS. On a side note the XServe is not the Server. The OS is. OSX Server can be installed on any qualifying hardware. The XServe is dedicated Server hardware built specifically to perform a Server (with all that that means) role. Redundancy is built-in. With what you're describing perhaps a suitable MacPro would be better?
With the XServe you have to consider a rack as well as noise if a rack is not an option.
+4) Improved speed (with the Lacie storage devices, there is some slowdown when first connecting)+
This is probably due to the fact the drives are connected to a client machine and OS that is now not coping with the amount of client access required. I'm guessing someone is also working at that client mac?
+5) Remote login--i.e. something like the ability to login from home and set up a render over the weekend+
This might be possible with XGrid although you might have a real problem with bandwidth
+I would prefer to go with an Xserve because of my familiarity with Mac products. My problem is that when I look at the specs for the Xserve, I really don't know what anything is. I have no idea how to price anything for the boss.+
+It makes me feel like I am getting in over my head, but at the same time, I am confident enough in my abilities that if I get the correct system set up, I should have no problem administering it for our needs.+
Leopard Server is a whole new ballgame and if not approached correctly Apple's marketing slogan of "No IT Required" may seem like a sick joke
+A) I imagine I'd want to go with the 8 core to start with+
If you have the budget get the best you can afford
+B) What kind of performance boost-and in what areas-would I get with upgrading to the 2.93 or 2.66 GHz?+
This would depend on what you want and what you're expecting. You won't really know until some time has passed. Besides how could you compare it? Unless you buy and bench test them both you can't really know? It might be possible you know someone who has exactly the same environment as you, doing exactly the same work and wanting exactly the same solution. However if you use google you should be able to find some performance bench test results? Whether they're applicable to your environment is another question.
+C) I imagine I should get the most RAM we could fit into the budget?+
    See (A)
+D) what is the Solid State drive? Do I need it?+
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP511
    http://www.apple.com/xserve/features/storage.html
    http://blogs.computerworld.com/newapple_xserves_offer_additional_ssdbay
+E) I can have 3 hard drives. How many do I need? why would I need more than one?+
See (A). To be honest only you would really know? With the optional Apple RAID Card you could have 3x1TB Drives as a RAID 5. This provides some measure of redundancy (which is not a back-up) as well as performance. However you could as easily use a MacPro that has the 4 drive bays. Potentially 3+TB of Storage. A simple rule of thumb would be: How much data do I have now? Does the Storage I have now cope with it? Will the amount of Data grow over time? Do I have enough storage to cope with that growth?
+F) Extra power supply..I understand why this makes sense+
The XServe can be built-to-order with two PSUs providing redundancy. You should factor in a UPS as well. You don't want a power cut to potentially ruin all your data?
+G) XSan? what is it? do I need it?+
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/xsan/XsanGettingStarted.pdf
I think this would be way too much in terms of your environment as well as your budget. However read the pdf and come to a reasoned judgment.
+We currently also only have everything connected via ethernet. What's the deal with Fibre channel? Do I need to install a Fibre channel card in each workstation plus run all new wiring? If so then this is a very pricey deal and way unrealistic as far as budget at this time.+
No to the first two questions. Read the XSan pdf.
+I'm also wondering about the render farm. Will either a Boxx system or a SGI system integrate well with an Xserve when rendering PC Maya files? Would there be an option to configure an Xserve as a render farm? If so could I render PC Maya files on it?+
I have no experience of either of the two products you mention. Perhaps someone who does may post?
    Does this help? Tony

  • Office 365 ability for a specific setup - advice please

I have a client, that has 1 main company with 2 areas HM is the main company HC is the secondary company which is part of HM
All of the staff work for HM and HC, and have roles within both... but to clients have a slightly different outward appearance
I have managed to sell the idea of Office 365 to them as they are a small company (one company)
They have 2 domains HM.com and HC.com all of the work towards the HM division go to HM and from HM, and all of the work to the HC area go to and from HC.
This is where the difficulty sets in.
I have sold the idea of a hosted exchange setup as they have used Exchange in the past and see the immense value... but as a small company and SBS no longer available Office 365 is clearly the way to go.
They will definitely be going for a Office E3 plan at £15 a month per user for Office and Exchange (although I do wonder can we combine E3 and Business Premium as not all users require Access?)
Now this will be to the main company of HM as that is the primary company.
The second division of the company HC do need email too though. Now I know I can tie multiple domains into the 1 Exchange email account
So all emails to HP.com and HC.com would be received the 1 user mailbox
    However it is the sending from that is important.... can it be set up so;
    1. if they reply to an email received to HC it will be from HC (i.e. so the customers don't see their email to HC coming from HM)
    2. If they do a new email can they chose to send from HC instead of HM (HM would be the typical default)
If this set up is possible can anyone forward me to a guide as I would like to test or advise
Or would they need to do an Office 365 E3 for HM
and then a hosted Exchange plan from Microsoft for HC
Any help would b gratefully appreciated
    thanks

  • Windows 7 won't load properly / possible HDD failure?

Well I will start off by saying I've been having problems with this since I've bought it.  It used to be under warranty and I had to ship it back twice, and I've had to do countless system recoveries but this time I'm at a loss.  My current problem started about 4 days ago.  I had skype downloaded, and my skype started freezing randomly, but only for 30 seconds to a minute, and then come right back to working.  Then this started happening more frequently, and then it got to the point to where it wasn't just skype that would freeze, it was my computer.  It must have only been explorer.exe that was freezing or something because my mouse still moved, and if I was in a skype call the skype call would work but I couldnt type or click on skype without it saying that it wasn't responding.  Then yesterday that problem upgraded again to nothing working very well.  My computer (again I can only assume it was explorer or something) would start up normally, and then once I got to my desktop the load light would come on my tower and freeze / slow down anything and everything.  Example was I had VLC media player open watching a show and the video would freeze for 2 to 5 minutes, play for 10 seconds, then freeze again.  Beforehand it was only slight lock ups, but then it became full blown lockups.  Once that load light came on it stayed on and never wavered and I would be forced to restart my computer to even give it a chance to run properly for a few minutes before this same problem would occur.  Yesterday however the problem upgraded once again, and my computer wouldn't even let me get to my desktop normally.  I was able to load into safemode with networking to try some solutions but nothing worked.  Then the hangup issue started occuring in safe mode as well, forcing me to restart again.  This is where it just keeps getting worse sadly.  My computer would get to the "Starting Windows" screen, sit there for a couple minutes, then maybe 1 out of 10 attempts it would get to the "Welcome" screen as if it was trying to load my desktop but never would load it, and on the other 9 attempts I didn't make it to the "Welcome" screen it just sat a black screen with the load light going and it would never do anything.  My mouse has never been frozen at any point so it's not a full on freeze situation, but something isn't right.  I did a sytem recovery last night, put it back once again to factory settings and it still locked up a little but nothing compared to how it had been.  I turned my pc off and went to sleep, and then this morning it did the usual not getting past the "starting windows" screen.  Sometimes it wouldn't even recognize my hard drive, giving me the old "insert media and boot from disc" or "No media found", I also got two errors, PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable, and the other message was PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM.   Then after receiving those messages my computer would restart and give me the choice to hit a button to load from disk.  Throught the course of this problem I tried startup repairs, smart tests, anti viruses, nothing did anything to help.  So I decided once again it was going to be time for a system recovery, but now when I hit f11 to go into the system recovery options, all of it is blacked out.  I can't even click on system recovery anymore.  So at this point Windows 7 won't load at all, not even in safe mode, and I'm lucky to even be given the OPTION to start it in safe mode.  Half of the time it seems my computer doesnt even recognize my harddrive, and I can't even do a system recovery or repair tools, but the repair tools didn't really do anything anyway.  So I have no way to use that computer, and Im thinking it might be HDD failure but I'm not hearing any noises coming from it and my computer has always been a little slow so it's not like things have slowed down by a lot so I'm not so sure its my HDD but I have no idea what to do or where to start since I've exhausted all my of resources on trying to fix this issue myself.  I know this problem is probably way too vague to try to get an accurate idea of what is wrong, but I will check back now and then and answer any questions to the best of my ability (I'm not tech savy so if you need really fancy PC information you wil most likely need to tell me how to acquire said information).  I mean I guess if I have to I will get a new HDD, but that means I will most likely need to get a new OS, and I love windows 7 with all my heart and I don't want to upgrade at windows 8.  I feel like it's my OS but it could very well be anything at this point.

  • Time for more RAM: OWC, Patriot, others?

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded from a 400 MHz G3 PowerBook with 1 GB RAM running 10.4.11 to a 2011 MBP with 4 GB running 10.6.7. Even with 4x the RAM, it seems to run out of free memory at about the same level of usage as my old system. I think the easiest solution is to throw more memory at it.
Does anyone have experience with either of these?
    Patriot PSD38G1333SK
    http://www.patriotmemory.com/products/detailp.jsp?prodline=3&catid=34&prodgroupi d=77&id=960&type=5
    OWC 1333DDR3S08S
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S08S/
The spec sheet seem to report different things, like cycle time for OWC vs. refresh interval for Patriot. OWC specifies that it is 64-bit wide memory, while Patriot does not, though I would assume that the SODIMM pinout spec dictates that.
Does it matter much, or does it come down to price?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Just want to throw my $0.02 in on the Patriot PSD38G1333SK modules.
I just picked it up at Fry's for $89 (no rebate). Crucial was a little cheaper but only by $8 and I didn't want to wait for shipping.
The Patriot looks to be running smoothly. When I first installed it, I ran AHT for three cycles (1 Quick, then 2 Extended)--all passed OK.
CAS 9 latency on the Patriot modules, same as the Hynix modules that came with the i7 2.2Ghz MBP I just bought on Monday.
The speed difference is noticeable on bootup only, it shaved off probably 4-6sec approximately. I'm still running the stock 5400RPM Toshiba for now but the speed difference is pretty outstanding.

  • Background job is taking lot of time for processing the job.

One background job - which is processing Idocs is processing a job for more than 2000+ seconds.. and completed tho.
But this is happening for the past few days.. is there any way to trouble shoot, or find from any logs of this completed job, to find out why it was taking lot of time for processing.
Can you please tell me the steps of analyzing / trouble shooting why it was taking lot of time daily.

    Hi Satish,
Run DB stat from db13 it will improve the performance.
Check number of idocs. You can send part by part, instead of sending huge data.

    Hi Experts,

    Hi,
please check if some of following OSS notes are not valid for your problem:
[Note 838036 - AFS: Performance issues during GR with ref. to PO|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/838036]
[Note 391142 - Performance: Goods receipt for inbound delivery|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/391142]
[Note 1414418 - Goods receipt for customer returns: Various corrections|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1414418]
The other idea is not to commit each call, but executing commit of packages e.g. after 1000 BAPI calls.
But otherwise, I am afraid you can not do a lot about performance of standard BAPI. Maybe there is some customer enhancement which is taking too long inside the BAPI, but this has to be analysed by you. To analyse performance, just execute your program via tr. SE30.

Using a Power Query connection, is it possible to extend the time-out time for scheduled data refreshes? The amount of data to be retrieved is rather limited, but there's thousands of rows (NAV server).

  • Suspension Times for Crawler Jobs

    Hello
I'm having trouble understanding why the suspension times for my "Document Refresh" and "Search Update 1" crawlers are not actually suspending the starting of these. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob

does this unit of issue of material have anything to do with the payment settlement while creating purchase order.
We are facing problem with the material movement for wirecut and machining subcontracting jobs. The PO created are not able to settle the subcontractor payment. So while goods receipt, we are cancelling the PO, in result the material comes and sits in our stock as it is, as if no operation has been done on the materials.
Scrap valuation is not being done due to the same case.
    What u suggest??

  • Adding transports to import queue after System Refresh

    Hello All,
Every time we do system refresh from PRD to Sandbox as a part of post refresh activity we need to import all the transports which are in the import queue of PRD(which are not yet imported to PRD) to our Sandbox.
But its a tedious job, as in the import queue many old transports which are still not yet imported to PRD will b there.
So may b around 150+ transport requests in the import queue of PRD, which we need to add those manually from path
    Extras---->other requests -
    > Add. doing same for 150 times. cant even imagine dat work.
So my question is, Is there any way to get the replica of import queue of PRD to Sandbox.
Some where i read like transport buffer in the path  /usr/sap/trans/buffer/<SID> of the system will have list of all transports in the import queue.
So can i copy dat file and replace SID with Sandbox SID and place it in the Sandbox under same path.
Please suggest or give me a correct solution.
    Regards,
    Ravi

Thanks a lot for your reply.
I had read about using script like tp addtobuffer inorder to add the transports to the import queue some time back.
But forwarding transports is a new method i got to know here which even looks easy too. It would be great if any 1 tell me how forwarding works.
Also it would b fine if who all uses this method of forwarding to add transports to import queue do reply about any  problems faced while forwarding requests.
Bcoz in our landscape , transport route is as below
Dev to QA and Sandbox then from QA transports will move to Production.
So after refresh forwarding Transports from PRD to Sandbox, how does this work. Please share your suggestions.
    Regards,
    Ravi
