Qosmio G40-108 - dvd/video playback quality

Just bought the Qosmio G40-108 loaded with Vista Ultimate. Ead all the reports and went for the stunning display report. I am sorely disappointed with the quality of playback on DVD and avi (divX Xvid h264). The colors are wishy washy and not all that sharp.
Compared to my 3 year old Toshiba mid range machine running WXP it is pretty poor. I have not messed about with anything.
Am I missing something or is this the fault of Vista. I tried loading WXP but couldn't as it came up with the message "blocked" since WXP is a downgrade. Can anyone help?!! Please.

I presume you are speaking about this other thread;
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums//thread.jspa?threadID=29745&messageID=107523#107523
Well, according to the second thread which you have posted the same video quality appears on another computer. So I dont think that your notebooks would malfunction.
Regarding your XP installation;
The XP installation cannot be finished because you need to install firstly the Intel Matrix Storage Manger which can be downloaded from the Intel page or from the Toshiba page.

  • Qosmio G40-108 Recovery DVD needed

Hi. I have a Qosmio G40-108. Unfortunately my recovery DVD was damaged and i am now in need of it to restore my machine. I ordered one from Toshiba 5 weeks ago and they still can't tell me when i am going to receive one.
If there is anybody who could kindly do me a copy of this i will be grateful. I will gladly pay for it.
    Regards
    martin

    Hi
This forum is not an exchange market!
I presume at the moment the G40 recovery CD is not available and the authorized service provider has ordered the Recovery CD from the Toshiba head warehouse.
This takes a little bit longer.
But if you want you can install the OS from the original Microsoft Windows CD and all necessary Toshiba drivers you will find on the Toshiba European driver page!!!
    Bye

  • Qosmio G40: HD-DVD - BluRay drive replacement

    Hello,
Due to the latest events and Toshiba agreeing that it's lost the format war, I wonder if it is possible to replace that very-soon-unusable HD DVD drive to something that will be able to read/write upcoming movies WITHOUT loosing the warranty (G40).

Hi there, I have the same problem. I wanted a high-end laptop with a WUXGA screen and was torn between the Qosmio G40-108 and and another notebook. In the end I bought the Qosmio G40-108 because of HDMI 1.3 and the 512Mb nVidia graphics. Still it's a great laptop and the HDMI output on my Samsung HD TV is brilliant. I play everything using the latest PowerDVD Ultra and there's no need for standalones anymore.
In a way I'm glad that this latest format war is over (at least until the next new thing comes out).
I think the Qosmio drive is a 9.5mm SuperSlim drive. At this point I'm sure there are no BD drives of that size (and when they come out they'll be mega expensive anyway), so we have to wait and see.
I recently bought a Pioneer BDC-202 Blu-ray player/DVD recorder and I use that on the Qosmio via SATA to USB2 adapter, this setup covers all my BD playback needs.
It'be be good to know if changing the drive will invalidate warranty.

  • IPad 2 Video playback Quality Issue (Low Contrast and grayish black)

Does anyone notice that the video playback quality is really bad on the iPad 2? If you try to play any video (youtube, apple trailer, your own converted video) on the iPad 2, any black images will turn grayish... Just put your iPhone, iPod touch, or even the older iPad next to it, then you will notice a BIG difference. The color is similar to what happened when you set the gamma incorrectly on a display.
Also, you will notice this more if you change the orientation of the device, the contrast will be corrected for a fraction of a second.
I've tried this on other iPad 2 and they all share the same problem. I tried to talk to the Apple Genius Bar and they refused to give me a proper answer on this, instead simply claiming that is just the way it is... I wanted to refund this but I've passed the 14 days rule and also I got it from a authorized retailer and so Apple just won't take it back.
I believe it can be fixed by software... Any idea? or I shall throw it away T_T

I'm on the phone with apple support right now. I work at a post production house, and we/our clients keep having this issue - everything looks great on screen and on the ipad 1, and theres a huge gamma shift on the ipad 2. they need to fix this ASAP. like Jls21 already said, a lot of us use ipads for work purposes - unacceptable!
this thread ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/15100980#15100980 ) seems to blame the h.264 codec/compression settings…? does anyone know of another codec that prevents this gamma shift on the ipad 2?
this is from the tech specs page:
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
is there anything that jumps out to anyone regarding workarounds for this issue?
we've used both Compressor and MPEG Streamclip - there's no quality difference between them, in case anyone is trying that.
okay so, i was transferred to a senior technical rep and he looked it up - apparently apple is getting a bunch of complaints about this issue and they've submitted it to their developers. the more people that call and complain, the higher up on the priority list it goes to be fixed in a software update. there is no workaround known, and it's a standard issue across all ipad 2's.

  • Qosmio G40-108 fails to start

    Hi Gang
I am hoping there are some fine peeps out there who can save a double-glazed window from being mullared by this lappy.
I have had it (Qosmio G40-108 with 4Gb RAM) since Aug 2007. All has been fine till about two weeks ago, where it kept crashing when running a couple normal progs that I use.
Having read several posts from peeps with similar problems, I think it could be the PCI express graphics card. Is this right? Can I swap it out? Or any tips, blaggs, ideas or suggestions are really welcome. :)
*Remember: There is always someone worse off than you...........*

Such behaviour is typical for overheating. When notebooks hardware reaches critical temperature, notebook will simply switch off to avoid hardware damage.
Your notebook is petty old so I can imagine there is a lot of dust inside and dust can block cooling vents and cooling grill so notebook cannot be cooled down properly.
Have you ever cleaned your notebook up?

  • Why is HD video playback quality poor?

When I play YouTube high-definition (720 or 1080) videos in Firefox in full screen mode, the play back is blurry compared to Internet Explorer; the same video, the same resolution - just a different browser. Why is this happening and what do I need to change in Firefox to get the same crisp high-definition video playback that is available in IE?

  • ITunes video playback quality is not that smooth

    Hello:
    Two questions--
    1. Why do the music videos I purchase on iTunes (and then play on iTunes) freeze up for a few seconds after I push play, but then otherwise playback is OK?
    2. Why does the "spinning beachball" appear almost everytime I press play for a video?
    Comment--
Given that my Mac more than meets the minimum system requirements for video playback, I think the videos should play smoothly from start to finish, especially at $1.99 a piece. I suspect that the playback bugs listed above are the result of iTunes not being that good/powerful of a video player. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved upon future iTunes software updates. In the meantime, I will not purchase anymore videos.
    Thanks.

Just updated iTunes to most recent version. Now I'm getting jerky video playback in BOTH iTunes and QT Pro (latest version). CPU use is very high but random; ditto with video playback (i.e., doesn't hang up on the same scene/time).
I had this issue a little over a year ago after updating iTunes to the then latest version. Got nowhere with Apple's "Service" texts. I played around with configs for a while and also re-installed iTunes. It has worked fine until yesterday (same symptoms as last time). As for the past "fix": nothing I can hang a hat on. Methinks Apple updated the version I re-installed with (tho' the version # was unchanged).

  • Qosmio G40 and S-Video Input

    Hello there my friends,
    i have a problem here :( ...
What i want is simple, in theory. I have a VHS VCR that i have some tapes i want to convert to DVD. I noticed that G40 has a S-Video In, so what i did was, buy a cable that in one end is SCART and in the other is S-Video, i connected the VCR to the G40, pressed play in the VCR, started Ulead Factory for Toshiba, but nothing happens, i can't record anything, even getting any picture....the problem is not in the cable because i connected the VCR to the TV the same way (with the same cable) and it shows fine.
Does anyone have any idea of how to do this ? I'm really desperate, i've searched foruns and googlled it but can't get any answer.
    Kind regards,
    Ricardo Monteiro

Ricardo this is not solution for you. Using S-Video cable can be used for video signal transfer only.
Do you want to have picture without sound. I don't think so.
I have made similar experiments and I have copied old VHS cassettes to my old Qosmio G30. Later I have converted recorded material and created DVDs.
My Qosmio G30 has antenna in port and I have connected my VHS recorder to this port and transferred video and audio signal. I have for example started video on VHS recorder and started Windows media centre and scanned all channels and on channel 33 I saw my recorded material that comes from connected VHS recorder.
I have tested recording with Qosmioplayer and MCE. Using both options I was able to use record option and have video material on HDD.
I am sure the same can be done with G40. Check it out.

  • Qosmio G20-139 slow video playback sound ok

    Hi,
I no longer seem to be able to play video files, play DVDs, or watch TV as the playback is in slow motion but sound is ok except on the TV.
Have tried to uninstall Graphics driver but it won't let me saying something to the effect of unable to uninstall as required to boot.
Also looking into uninstalling /reinstalling Video driver but can't find what it is. Is it the same as the Graphics driver (NVIDIA Go Geforce 6600)?
This all started (i think) when i tried to use a netgear router insatllation CD but stopped it half way even though it said not to... Then whole system went incredibly slow and crashed a lot for a while (even Word, Excel and Powerpoint) but think some updates have sorted that out.. but it still doesn't seem to be able to handle too much going on at once like before... plus some site heavily using javascript have also gone ridiculously slow.
Besides using product restore CD as not to hand as moved to diff country... Any suggestions please????
    OS: Window XP MCE

The display driver and the graphic driver is the same ;) some people call it display driver and some people say graphic driver
Im not quite sure why you are not able to watch movie files properly but possibly you would need some kind of codex.
The codec can be downloaded from different pages and many packages contains different codex.
Personally Im using N K-Lite Mega Codec Pack because it contains most necessary codecs.
I think its worth a try to install it!
Furthermore I recommend cleaning the OS using the CCLeaner its free tool and I had a good experience with it

  • Qosmio G40: HD DVD player black bars are grey

Hello, When I play a HD DVDV movie in my new G40 the black is grey, you see it very well in the black bars that are on the buttom and top of the screen , but the black of the computerscreen around it is ok. How can I get it better. I'm sure it's not the HD DVD-movie itself. Does anyone have a clue (and is it clear what I mean?
    Thanks for (the) answers!
    John

Here is a suggestion. Go to the Nvidia control panel, choose video and television, and then videocolors (or something like that; I have a dutch version of Vista). You have to lower down the brightness (ie to 40-45%) and higher up contrast (ie 55-60%)
    Success!

  • Tecra 8100: DVD Video-Playback only with jerking/flickering under W2K

I cant play a normal DVD on my Tecra 8100 (P3-600MHz, 256 MB RAM, Windows 2000 with SP4)
without jerkings. Have already try to copy image from DVD to HDD and play directly from
HDD - same result. Therefore it is NOT a problem with the DVD-Drive, possibly a problem
    with the integrated S3 Savage/MX VGA-Card. S3 Display driver V 5.12.1.7002 installed.
Tested with PowerDVD 6 and VLC media player. Any special DVD-Playback software for the
8100 available ??? Please help, trying several hours to solve this problems, already
    talk with toshiba hotline !!!

    Hi
Well, the Tecra 8100 is not a high performance notebook and maybe its generally not possible to watch DVD jerking-free.
But I think you should check several settings before we will give up ;)
So check if the DMA and not the PIO mode is available and set on IDE controllers.
Check if you have installed the latest DirectX.
You said you use the latest graphic driver. Well maybe you will check this site:
    http://www.s3graphics.com/en/resources/drivers/legacy/software_archive.jsp#id_290298drv
Check also if the installation of some codex will help you:

  • Terrible video playback quality

    Hi all,
I am tearing my hair out wondering why all my video footage looks awful when played back in QT. I have tried playing .dv .mpg .avi files etc. and they are all jerky and disappointing. Footage has been captured by both SD camcorder and DV camcorder; even uncompressed PAL DV looks bad. However, when this footage is burned to DVD and watched on my TV DVD player the motion is silky smooth. I have even tried deinterlacing the footage with MPEG Streamclip but even that looks awful! In addition, self authored DVDs that look fine on a TV look rubbish when played on the Mac. Ideas?

Does it look bad AND jerky, or just stuttering?
Make a 6 second long snippet of one of the DV files. Save it as a self-contained movie. Try playing that. Any difference?
Now download VLC from videolan.org, play the same file and compare results.
Now repeat the process with the Activity Monitor CPU graph running. My wild guess is the video is crushing your CPU.

  • Qosmio G40-108: starange display issue with highest resolution

I just got mine but on its highest resolution all webpages have these 11 semi-rectangular blocks, barely visible, only the bottoms, each about an inch long, is this normal and should i send it back to be investigated?

    Hello
It is very nice to hear that you already have newest Qosmio notebook. About your issue I can not say much because without one screenshot it is not easy to understand what you mean exactly. On my Qosmio G30 (with the same HD resolution) I have no problems at all. Because of that I can really not understand what is wrong there.
If possible post a link where we can see how it looks like. Your description is not enough.
BTW: have you noticed this on web pages only?

  • Poor quality HD video playback when in full screen?

I've recently purchased a late 2013 iMac 21.5" mid-range model and finding the video playback quality poor when opening it up to full screen. Does anyone else have this issue?? I was expecting similar quality to my HD tv when using the iPlayer app, but i@m even finding it poor when watching the HBO trailer on the Apple website for Game of Thrones. I have also been into my local Stormfront and found the same issue on both their 21.5 and 27" models on the shop floor.
Am I being too picky? The quality when it is in the small window is amazing.

The quality when it is in the small window is amazing.
One thing that pops into my mind is: what is the resolution/size/quality of the video you are watching? If it was created in a smaller size, then forcing it into showing on a bigger screen will always impact the quality significantly. You cannot enlarge a picture or video without significant quality loss (fuzzy/pixelation).

  • Video playback slowdown (on window focus shift)

    Hi,
I have a Mac Mini 1.42GHz 512mb RAM 80GB machine that I've been using for light OS X 10.4.7 usage. I've noticed that when a Safari window playing a video (Quicktime plugin or Adobe Flash 9.0) loses focus, that means when I change to another window, the video playback becomes very choppy to the point of being unable to watch it. I've noticed this tendency in DVD Player as well. I was wondering if someone could tell how I could turn off this. It's a real bugger because I multitask quite a bit and would like to hear videos play smoothly (the audio chops too) while it is out of focus.
I'm a Windows user by default so I really don't know if this is proscribed behavior for OS X to facilitate higher process responsiveness while in focus. I've done a couple of searches regarding the issue and haven't found anything. Hope I'm not treading well worn paths
    Bonus question:
I've noticed DVD Player playback quality is atrocious with any dvds I've played on it, I haven't seen any major complaints regarding the Mini's playback quality so I was wondering if someone had any pointers? The quality level is about that of any regular mpeg2 video without any postprocessing attached, it looks very crude. I've had this 'issue' since Panther. Is this a problem related to ATI's 32mb graphics core or...?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mac Mini 1.42GHz PPC (512mb, 80GB, 10.4.7)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The video slowdown in the Flash player is a built in "feature" (I actually think it is a feature, but your milage may vary!) of Safari.
I actually recently read something about this, but I'm not sure I'll get it all exactly correct. And of course I can't remember where I saw it. But the long-short of it seems to be that Flash doesn't have its own clock. It relies on the hosting platform to feed it its time cues. Different browser manage this differently, but Safari is evidently designed to drop Flash (and probably other things) to about 4 frames per second when the window doesn't have focus.
There seemed to be a similar limitation within Firefox as well. The discussion I read was asking some Flash plug-in developer if they could bypass these controls. The developer pointed out that (especially in the Firefox case) that was a community decision as a way to limit folks from having the dreaded "Death of Five thousand little Flash banners."
So even with a more powerful computer I don't think you will be able to get around this issue. Maybe I'm wrong.
As for the DVDs issue all I can say is that with a Mini you probably won't be able to watch DVDs and do other stuff.
