Qosmio Q50 - game lag - is it overheating?

Hi all,
I took a break from playing games for a few months to concentrate on my studies. I started playing them again recently, but after about 10 minutes the fans become really loud (probably working at their full power) and the game lags to the extent that it is unplayable. The fans then calm down and the game plays normally again for another 5 minutes and then the same process occurs.
The process:
1-> Launch game and play for about 10 minutes
2-> The fans become very loud and the game lags greatly lasting around 1 minutes
3-> The fans calm down and the game plays smoothly
4-> After about 5 minutes we go back to step 2
I didn't used to experience this problem, and I do not know why I am suddenly experiencing it. Is my laptop overheating? Why would the game lag when the fans are working at there hardest and not when they are working quietly? Wouldn't it make more sense that the laptop would run smoother when the fans are working harder because the system should be cooler?
Is there anything I could do to fix this?

>Why would the game lag when the fans are working at there hardest and not when they are working quietly?
Fans work faster and harder because of the higher temperature.
The CPU and GPU would be clogged down to reduce the heat dissipation
What does this means? This means that both chips would run slower and this could affect game performance.
Is it more clear for you? I recommend reading some threads here regarding this theme

  • MacBook games lag :'(

Hey guys. I have a question i was hoping you guys would be able to answer. So basically, i have a MacBook Pro late 2011 with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, with 4GB of RAM. My graphics card is an Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB and pretty much all good games lag
    Any suggestions or tips?

    Hello,
Based on your current specs, I would imagine you're getting some lag. MacBooks aren't exactly the greatest at playing games (although the newer ones are quite capable), but there is always room for improvement. You can upgrade your RAM to up to 16GB which should make a noticeable difference, but 8 will also be fine.
As far as graphics cards go, not much you can change with MacBook Pro's, but I believe your model should have 2 - 1 integrated, and one dedicated. The computer should automatically switch between them (when it needs more power it'll switch to the dedicated). I dunno though, your computer may be different.
Next is the game settings. I've got an early 2011 MacBook pro with i7 and same amount of RAM as you, but it's just 2.0 GHz. Playing any games on highest settings is usually a lagfest (on Mac and Windows Bootcamp). I would reccomend turning off things such as anti-aliasing and various filtering. Another option that makes a big difference is resolution. If you can live with a little bit lower settings, this can be a big fps increaser. Try going from 1440x900 to 720p. This allows me to play games like Assassin's Creed III and Battlefield 3 with no hassle. Usually around 30 fps - could be better, but for a laptop, does great. Also, playing while plugged into AC power can help a little bit.
..another option is an external video card. Never used these, but I heard some of them are pretty good

  • G405s Games lagging when plugged in

When I start playing a game, for example FIFA 14, the game lags a bit as I use the software FRAPS and the FPS fluctuates a lot and goes down to around 45. As soon as I take out the power cord, the FPS rises to 60 and the game starts running smooth. Please tell me a solution to this!
I am currently using Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)

    Hi Candafaizan,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with games lags when the adapter is plugged in, in your G404s laptop.
As the only way to confirm the issue with adapter or the motherboard, you need to check with the other adapter, as you have mentioned that there is no extra adapter running only in battery mode is to remove the adapter and play with the hellp of the battery only, hence please visit the nearest service centre for further details.

  • Overheating/Game lag, on DV7-1270us

    Hello,
My problem is with over-heating, I've had this laptop for a while, and although I've maintained it, It has been used a lot. I've installed a few games, and while playing them it's not uncommon for the laptop to overheat and shut down. The laptop normally gets pretty hot, when it's on for extended periods of time (but doesn't usually shut down), the fan does work, and does go faster when the laptop's doing a lot of things.
My issue with this is, let's say for example I'm playing GTA IV; this laptop is equipped to play this game, based on the minimum recommended hardware, and also the recommended (besides CPU) so I would naturally assume playing it is going to be with no lag, or problems. This is not the case as with other newer games, Mafia II, Dead Island, and others gave me the same problem, starting them up and playing usually gives me good FPS (playable anyway) but after maybe ten minutes, very rough lag starts, I'd get like a maximum of 10FPS if even that, despite the fact I know my system can handle it.
    So far I've
    - Open the laptop, cleaned it out, ensuring no dust is in it
    - Defragmented the entire C drive, had over 50k fragments
    - I use gamebooster software when playing games to ensure no resources are wasted on background programs
    - Tweaked my nvidia geforce 3D settings to maximize performance
    - Tweaked settings in game, low graphics, etc
    - Updated Graphics card drivers to latest version
All of this maybe got me a few extra FPS, so you can see my frustrations, I've exhausted every option I know, which is why I've come here, the lag problems seem to be related to the overheating problem because like I said booting up the games from a cool laptop, usually means playable FPS, but lag starts as the laptop heats up, and uses 100% cpu power.
My only other thought would be replacing the thermal paste. This is a pretty strenuous operation that I don't want to even attempt unless I know it will help, are there any other causes that may explain why this is happening?
    My specs are:
    CPU: You Have: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz
CPU Speed: You Have: 2.4 GHz Performance Rated at: 27.048 GHz
    RAM: 4.0GB
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2
    Video Card:GeForce 9600m GT
300GB harddrive, 107GB free right now, direct x version 11
Any advice would be appreciated. I wouldn't be too concerned if it was just one game, but when it's all relatively new games that lag like this, despite being up-to-par with the requirements.
    This question was solved.

Your video lag 10 minutes in is an overheating symptom; the GPU throttles itself when temp is too high.
Here's how I cured my laptop's overheating issues:
    - Cleaned out the heat exchanger and fan.  *Blowing out the intake / outlet with canned air may not get all the dust/fluff!*  I found some in the fins after a thorough external dusting.  Not much, but YMMV.  Sad to say however, you pretty much have to pull the entire thing apart to get at the upstream side of the heat exchanger; not a task for the faint-hearted.  Good one, HP.
    - Replaced the thermal paste.  I figured why not, since I had it torn down anyway, and am glad I did.  Looked like they used the absolute cheapest compound (on the GPU) and tape (on the CPU) they could find.  Thoroughly cleaned off the heatsinks and chips, polished them up a little with a dremel tool and buffing compound (could probably have skipped this), and reassembled with arctic silver thermal compound.  Not sure how much good it did, but with desktops I've seen a 5-10 degree improvement with silver over the thermal tape - hate that stuff.
    - Airflow into that intake on the underside isn't spectacular, even when the laptop's on a hard, flat surface.  I bought a lap desk, and cut out a circle opposite the air intake.  This made more of a difference than you might think it would.
Result: Running Civilization V (which stresses the box a LOT more than you might think), went from 85-90 degrees C with occasional thermal shutdown to 60-65 and much quieter fan; still rather warm but not critically so.
By the by, the 9600GT doesn't support dx11, which means that some of your rendering is being done in software.  You might actually see a speedup by falling back to dx9.

  • Websites failing to load, games lag, but connectio...

    Hello,
Hoping someone here might be able to help me out with this one. For the past few days now some web pages havbe been failing to load and games are occasionally disconnecting. However the entire time our connection seems to be remaining stable and connected.
It appears to happen for no reason, and it only affects some websites. bbc.co.uk, google search, and these Broadband forums. Other sites will load perfectly fine, including both the BT speedtest and the ookla speedtest (both of which show our internet speed & ping to be perfectly fine.
I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this issue. I've set the DNS settings in my network adaptor to google DNS to see if that makes a difference, but the fact it affects online gaming in the form of lag makes me thing this is not the case.
I'm hoping to try a traceroute the next time the issue happens, and hopefully have it complete. The problem is by the time we confirm a non-working site and get part way through the traceroute the problem seems to fix itself so we cannot get confirmation of where the issue is coming from.
I'm wondering if anyone else is having similar problems, or has maybe had a similar problem in the past and can suggest any steps or tests I can take to find/remedy this problem?

nothing has been posted here about it have you checked the service status page or the status phone line 08001690199 and see if there is any problems in your area

  • When in group chat, skype has bad connection and games lag

Okay so I have searched almost every related post and cant find this exact issue and ive tried all the standard stuff to fix internet issuesWhat happens is So I moved to a new house and had no internet for 2 weeks starts may 20th about, and we got internet around june 5th. Ever since then when I join a group call with my 5 local friends Ive been in a group call with for 4 years i have bad connection and when i play online games it lags. It use to affect my internet browser, google chrome by making stuff stop loading but that isnt the case anymore. I have tried many things. Like recently I join skype group call and it seems to be fine but once i join their terraria server both skype lags and terraria and I end up losing connection. I have a theory but there still a lot of variables. Whenever my one friend is in the group call i lag a lot more than I usually do, but not everytime, and sometimes i still lag when hes not in the call. Its also him hosting the terraria server where its really bad. It has been like this for other games too though and I have tried many solutions. I feel like maybe its a bandwith thing but i get over 100 mbs download speed and around 15 mps upload speed and low ping. I can also download 2 games and play a online game with 0 problems but once skype is involved it becomes terrible.I really would like a fix, I have used skype forever and I dont think my friends really wanna use anything else.I got windows 10 about a week ago, the beta, but it did it on windows 7 too.I have also tried downloading older skypes but it keeps downloading the newer one automatically even with automatic updates off. Also when I lag on skype the little refreshing/connecting icons comes up and I lag to my friends, but I never hear them lag.

If you are swapping out operating systems and nothing is changing then the variables you need to look into are: 1,  Your wired/wireless connection.  Try wired if going wireless as you may have issues sustaining a good connection with the myriad of ports Skype uses.  This can be due to distance, interference or other factors. 2,  Try bypassing your router and go directly connected to your modem (if possible).  Issues with the router firmware, its configuration or the limitations of the  router itself could be causing bandwidth related issue.  Going wired to the modem would be ideal.  3. You can try disabling/enabling uPnP in your router to see if that makes a difference.  Some routers handle uPnP well, others have performance issues with it.  4  Cable modem/Line issues -  You could have stability issues due to the quality of the modem based off standard/tier.  You could have line conditions that affect upload/download stability or both, under load. I've had issues with Skype that were related to my wireless router firmware.  I've also had to swap out my modem to a more compatible and higher tier one (twice) when my ISP performed infrastructure changes.

  • IMac Retina (M290X). Games lagging @ 1280x1024. Whats wrong?

    Hello!
I just changed my previous iMac (with 2560x1440 display / GF680MX) to Retina / M290X
All the games are LAGGING now at any resolution!!! Whats wrong?!
Even Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 LAG violently! Why?!
In-game resolution is set to 1280x1024! They performed nice on my previous, GF680MX, model!

    Hello! Great thatnx for help!
    I managed to defeat lags:
    1) Lags GONE after clean reinstall (initially, I restored iMac state from Time Mcahine copy) AND turning ON frame syncronization (?!). Will continue investigation what exactly cause lags - as u know frame sync usually degrades performance and I cannot imagine how restoring state from TM could cause lags. Will try to fugure out what exactly caused them and report the result. Maybe some other people can come acrooss this problem!
    2) Just in case: in Russia return policy is the same

  • Packet Loss Causing Game Lag

For the past few days I've been experiencing severe lag while playing an online game.  The ping is normal, but the game stops responding or its response is delayed to such an extent that it's impossible to continue playing.  My friend attributed the problem to the packet loss that Verizon customers have been experiencing.  I'm curious as to when this issue will be resolved, as it's extremely annoying and has prompted me to consider switching to a different internet service provider.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon
    news.giganews.com
traceroute to 71.242.*.* (71.242.*.*), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
        1 gw1-g-vlan201.dca.giganews.com (216.196.98.4) 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms
        2 ash-bb1-link.telia.net (213.248.70.241) 39 ms 7 ms 7 ms
        3 TenGigE0-2-0-0.GW1.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.125.125.41) 4 ms 4 ms GigabitEthernet2-0-0.GW8.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.65.76.189) 4 ms
        4 so-7-1-0-0.PHIL-CORE-RTR1.verizon-gni.net (130.81.20.137) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        5 P3-0-0.PHIL-DSL-RTR11.verizon-gni.net (130.81.13.170) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        6 static-71-242-*-*.phlapa.east.verizon.net (71.242.*.*) 32 ms 32 ms 33 ms
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
#3 If you don't know how to get that info:
    a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
    b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

  • Why does the game lag in the beginning when connecting to gamecenter?

whenever i open a game such as temple run, or subway surfers the first 10 seconds lag a lot causing the screen to become unresponsive then after 10 sec gamecenter connects and its fine. it is very annoying and causes the game to crash sometimes.

It's a glitch. THe wallpaper app is determined to fill the whole screen, even if it zooms in to do it.
If you go in through the photos app, 'send' your photo to be a wallpaper by tapping the little square with an arrow poking out of it, you will have a bit more scalability. not as much as before, but more than you do through the wallpaper settings.
Also, the higher resolution image you use the better your result will be. No idea when or if there will be a fix.

  • Updated to iOS 7 - Some of games lag when I use assistive touch

I just recently updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 7 and always use assitive touch so I wont press the home button most often. But i notice that whenever i play games on my phone, it sometimes lag - its not fast like it used to when im using iOS 6. I have no idea whats wrong.

Hi, PrincErick. I personally experience lag on my iPad mini (1st generation) with AssistiveTouch enabled and Increase Contrast disabled on iOS 7.
You have two options to speed up your iPhone 5 in general:
    1) One is to disable AssistiveTouch since it's the main resource of the choppiness in iOS7 enabled devices. If you'd rather have AssistiveTouch enabled, then your other option is to
    2) Enable Increase Contrast in Accessibility.
Also, if you're playing graphics intensive games such as "COD: Strike Team" or "Infinity Blade 3", it is best if you do a reboot (Hold the sleep/wake button then slide to power off then hold the sleep/wake button once again) before you play these games for optimum system performance.
This is a software issue so the best we can hope for, and together with other people concerned with this matter, is for Apple to release a software update addressing this nasty AssistiveTouch bug.

  • Games lag

hi everyone i am Oliver and i bought  HP 15-g002ax Notebook PC just yesterday, here are the specs:
    -processor  : 2 GHz AMD Quad-Core A8-6410 APU with Radeon R5 Graphics
-graphic card: AMD Radeon HD 8570M Graphics (2 GB DDR3 dedicated)
-RAM: i've upgraded to 8GB (originally 4 gb)
    -HDD: 1 Tb
here is what i get from the Avanced Screen Resolution
Besides all the above specs i still cant run games smoothly (e.g.  GTA 4).  I will appreciate any suggestions or explanation from anyone.
    Thank you

Hello Oliver, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you're having an issue with playing games on your notebook. I will try to help you with this.
The first thing I recommend doing is running the HP Support Assistant to update the drivers for your notebook. This may help with a bit. You may want to make sure all Windows updates have complete as well. This is to ensure everything that can be is up to date.
Next, will depend on the game(s) being played.
This notebook, doesn't have the spec's to blow graphic settings out of the water. You could run some non graphic intense games at max settings. Make sure to be adjust each individual games settings to get the best results. Also, if any of these are online, your connection to the internet and the games servers could have an effect to the lag you experience.
By doing all the updates above, this should help with lag issue a bit for online gaming. However, you may have to look at other possibilities if that's an issue.
You'll have to then test each game to see how they perform for you. If you're still noticing lagging, please reply back with what game, if it's online or not and what settings you've tested with.
I look forward to hearing how things go.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
I worked on behalf of HP.

  • Handling Game Lag

    Hi Everyone,
I'm programming a multiplayer game, where several spaceships compete against each other. When the game is played over internet, the lag is acceptable, but the game does not run smooth.
    The Network-concept:
    - every game-cycle is calculated on each participating computer and only the controller-inputs and (rare) events are transmitted to the other computers via TCP-Sockets to reduce the amount of data as much as possible. the resulting lag is about 100 ms
    - every game-cycle-calculation takes exactly 10ms, so all participating computers calculate the next game-cycles at the exact same speed.
    - one computer is the arbiter who checks for collisions, etc... and informs the other computers about them. the others are 'dumb' and don't check for collisions.
    - the local controller-inputs are applied directly to the local game, so the local player does not notice any lag (some posts in this forum said, games like Q3 and Half-Life do it that way). At the same time, they are added to a queue from where they are sent to the arbiter.
    - all Sockets have the TCP-no-delay flag set to TRUE and all the assosiated outputstreams are flushed immediately after a message was written.
    - if the game run for some time, the positions of the spaceships would differ more and more on each computer, so the arbiters sends every spaceship's current position of his game to every participating computer each 500ms.
Problem: those position-updates are too old, because they are calculated from received controller-input which travelled already some time (lag), and the position-update itself needed some time to be transmitted (lag). If the position-update is applied to the local game, the local ship jumps back to a position it has been some time before (2 x lag).
Question: how do I synchronize the position of the spaceships on each computer without having to much lag and without having spaceship "jumping" to older positions?
    Best regards,
    Lost Crumb

In that scenario you have to be alert to cheating.
The server should check the positions of the ships regularly to detect whether they may have moved to places they're not supposed to go to (so having an unnaturally high speed which hints at cheating) and things like that.
If you do damage calculation on the client as well you'll also have to check whether damage is indeed being dealt. Say one side sends a message shooting a laser at the location of another ship doing 1000 points of damage and the other sends back that no damage was done that might indicate a cheater as well (depending on your game of course, if there's shielding etc. and chances to miss...).
Maybe better to calculate such things serverside.

  • Game Lag After Update

The game I Downloaded via Steam (Batman: Arkham City [Game of the Year Edition]) is lagging crazily!
This Never Happened when i updated to Mac OS X Mavericks from Mac OS X Mountain Lion!
But Suddenly after i Updated to Mac OS X Yosemite (after it was released officially on the App Store) everything in the game began lagging!
Im Sure it cant be hardware as it had been working fine before i updated!
The game played VERY Smoothly before!
Now I can't Even Play It anymore!
Its Too laggy to be played!
How do i Fix this or what should i do?

Could someone add this issue to our bug database?  When adding the bug, we'll get the fastest traction if we can get a reproducible test case (ie. sample project/app) and steps to reproduce attached.  We'll also want to know what devices this occurs with.  Once added, please post back with the bug number so that others can add their comments and I'll start the internal investigation.
    Thanks,
