  • QOSMIO X505-Q887 - System Recovery

The disk drive on my Qosmio x505-q865 crashed.  Orderd and receiived a new drive and recovery disks.  Installation and recovery went smoothly, but some of  the drivers are different than the equipment installed on my computer.  There were severral error messages as recovery progressed and I am left with no sound but most importantly no internet at all.  I can't load new drivers without internet.  How do I solve  this problem?  I was disappointed that after providing my model number that the restore disks didn't have a choice of drivers to address these issues.  The computer otherwise works but is of no use to me without wifi or cable internet - I can even get along without sound.  Can someone help.

That's unfortunately what happens when you restore to a disk having advanced-format technology. See this message from three years ago. Nearly all drives now have AFT. So we've had lots of experience with this.
The fix is to install a new storage driver as early in the process as possible.

If you have messed around with the drivers, you will probably need to repeat the restore.

  • Qosmio X505 - Q870 Freezing Problem PLS HELP !!!

    hello everyone
    i have toshiba qosmio x505 q870 with nvidia gts 360m. core i7 q720 @1.6
i have this strange problem .. the laptop freezes recently alot that im not being to use it, it happens not in particular situation .. it may happen in any time in anything you are doing. last time happened, i was logging in.
i wish to know whats the problem .. after freezing the only thing that i can do is ahard shut down by keep pressing the power button.
i tried mem test to check the rams .. no errors i have 8gb ram.
i tried scanning the hard disk for bad sectors .. also nth, i have 128 gb ssd
( the laptop came with 500gb hitachi 7200rpm, i added SSD 128gb Kingston later )
and another 500gb seagate 7200 rpm.
i tried replacing rams .. still happening.
i used the laptop without battery only on power still happening.
i used the battery alone also happened.
i changed the windows copy yes it freezed.
some times when it happens i take off the battery and take of the rams and keep pressing the power button to reset the laptop thing about electricity, thats what they told me .
Then it will happen but after awhile. one time i did this thing:
i disassembled the laptop with eveything out and did a cleaning for eveyrhing ( bearing in mind it wasnt full of dust or anything it was clean ) and then reinstalled everything in place.
    That was a while ago..
After that it took awhile before rehappening, something about a month . and one time happened during the installtion of windows =S
i tried eveything .. i updated all the drivers, uninstall reinstall, i did a recovery i did eveything with no results no over heating problems
i asked the support center and they didnt figure out whats causing. they did not figure out the problem soo... to show me that they are a good costumer care center they told me that they want to replace :
    1. motherboard 280 $
    2. graphic card 600 $
    3. 2 x 4 gb ram 100 $
    4. HDD 70 $
the laptop is out of warranty and im sure i wont do such a thing ..
all of that to be replaced just because they did not figure out.
and im the one whos gonna cry !
im sure that this solution is not the right one.
i tried four different HDD same result and as i mentioned .. one of them was during the installation of windows during the recovery ...
i almost tried eveything i tried to run with one memory module, then the other module, and see if either provides more stability. For clarity, let's call one RAM 1 and the other RAM 2. and i have two slots; call them slot 1 and slot 2. Try RAM 1 in slot 1 with slot 2 empty. If that does not allow the system to work well, try RAM 1 in slot 2 with slot 1 empty. If that does not provide more stability, try RAM 2 in slot 1 with slot 2 empty. If that still is not stable, try RAM 2 in slot 2 with slot 1 empty. still freezing =(
    Plus .. i tried 8 different rams modules 1 in 1 , 1 in 2, 2 in 1, 2 in 2 and goes on .. etc .. still freezing .. i tried eveything humanty can do ..
i guess im gonna buy a robot and let him set, think, work, and figure out whats causing ..
after all im guessing its sth about electricity .. i think thats theres atiny black thing in the motherboard causing loose or giving more static or delivering more or less electricity to some parts or anything like this .
who knows ... my humanty after i did all that made think like this .. or lets say its BY LOGIC .. Please Anyone can Help ... !!
anyone can help =( im disperate

A FIX THAT WORKS SO FAR!
I have a x505 - q870 myself and have had problems with freezing for a long time - till a few days ago, it began to freeze at random times even 15 minutes after boot, making the laptop unusable. I use a cooling pad, and that didn't help either. I thought it maybe a corrupt OS, bad memory or a heating problem.
I found this toshiba form post and on advice decided to unseat and reseat the CMOS battery. WARNING: this takes time and patience, you have to disassemble the entire laptop to get to the motherboard. I'll attach an X505 service manual that I found a while ago.
While getting to the CMOS battery, I also discovered that the fans had a carpet layer of dust/lint covering the rear vents (after 2 years heavy travel and use). I cleaned these out (with air), unseated and reseated the battery, and reassembled the laptop. You will have to update system time on first boot. VOILA! I have had the laptop working for two days now, no freezing yet! I am guessing a couple of reasons:
    1. Hard resetting the motherboard did something magical - worth a try.
    2. Cleaning dirt blocking vents under the motherboard definitely helped heating issues. You may not have this problem. But in any case, do you use a cooling pad?
If you are out of warranty (like me) and have some technical knowledge, I suggest you give this a try. Since I did this I have not had a freeze yet after constant use! This after having repeated freezes every hour of use is definitely an improvement.

  • Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q870 power button unresponsive but laptop powers up using media control button

Well this is perplexing, I could really use some help.
My power button on my Qosmio X505-Q870 is completely unresponsive. I've tried holding it for 30 seconds, but to no avail. I removed the battery & replaced the battery, testing the power button by pressing it for 30 seconds or rapidly pressing it - makes no difference whatsoever.  But then, I noticed if I touch the media touch button, the computer powers up! (And opens up Windows Media Player) Very stealthy...
Now when the laptop is already powered up, pressing the media button does not turn it off. It only opens Windows Media Player.
Here is some background info that may or may not be helpful:
    1 1/2 years ago:
RAM was upgraded to 8 MB
I replaced the HDD with a SSD, and then installed the HDD into the 2nd bay.
Computer has been running fine since these changes, aside from running hot when gaming.
    2 days ago:
I upgraded the SSD to a larger drive.
Then, I disassembled the laptop with the intent to apply some thermal compound and clean the fans to address the temperature issues.  I could not complete this task because 2 screws were stripped and I couldn't get the cover off, afterall.
I did not swap any connections, but did notice one seemed a bit loose after carefully lifting up the keyboard so I gently eased it back in to place.
I put the laptop back together, and that is when the power button and media center button issue began. So it must be a result of either opening the case or upgrading the SSD.
Any thoughts on what could be causing this to happen?
And if anyone has a trick to remove stripped screws without taking a drill to my laptop - I'd love to hear your ideas. Thanks!!

nTia89 wrote:try to downgrade the kernel with a working version
Thanks for your reply! Actually, yesterday I upgraded to the new kernel (version 3.4.3-1) and my laptop has not freezed since then. So, maybe I will wait for a couple of days and hopefully mark this as solved.

  • Toshiba Qosmio x505-q870 Issues

Hi, i'm a proud owner of this laptop and its served me very well for the past 3 years.
Recently i'm having some heat issues where i think the computer is starting to hang/freeze around 75c.  I've checked some other forums and folks say thermal shutdown is MUCH higher than that so i'm kinda curious at why its happening.  Naturally i've cleaned out all the vents, got a laptop cooler, got rid of as much bloatware, and minimized my HDD usage for as much efficiency as i can squeeze out of the machine.  Not too sure what the next step would be to try to minimize the heat.  At rest with the cooler fan i'm looking at 50c while during intense gaming 65-75c, which is where the freezing, BSOD, and other bad things occur.
I've also ugraded my RAM.  i bought 2 sticks of 4 gig Patriot PC3-12800 1600 MHz CL11 1.35v RAM, which are technically compatible as they are the same speed and size as the ram also sold via the Toshiba website.  My first game with the new RAM showed massive improvement in FPS.  However shortly into the next round it froze up where i needed to do a cold shutdown.  Thinking nothing of it, I restarted and began another game and the same thing happened again where it froze.  After that point i stopped to reassess my options.  Heat was also extremely high, but that was nothing out of the norm for my current situation.
After some quick research on what i shoud do, i ran Memtest86 which came back clean after 20 passes, updated my BIOs from v2.3 to v2.9, and tried to get into the BIOs to try to change the voltage being sent into the RAM.  My old ram had 1.5v while the new ones were at 1.35v.  I ran the program cpu-z to see what voltage it was being run at, and it was set at 1.28v so apparently there's something going on.  Unfortunately in the BIOs i couldnt find how to change the voltage settings, so i'm currently at a loss what to do.  Some more reading has brought to my attention that the fans might not also be working at full capacity.  I also tried to see how i can adjust my fan speeds in the BIOs and again came to a loss.
What do i do to try to minimize my heat burden and try to get my RAM integrated smoothly?

  • Media Controls for the Qosmio x505 q870

    Hi there,
I recently purchased the Qosmio X505 q870 machine, and it came with the side media center control panel. Everytime one of those buttons is pushed, a loud beep is produced, and even muting the speakers still causes this beep. I am wondering if there is anyway to remove this beep from the machine, and still keep the functionality of the media control panel.
    Thanks, Jesse.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

  • Qosmio X505-Q870

I had my laptop for about two years now and it has worked great with the exception of it overheating. Now I am starting to have a number of issues:
    1. Blue screen memory dump while playing games. It said something about Kendal hardware. I did research and it said that this is an idication of hardware damage.
    2. Computer freezing while playing games
    3. Computer freezing just being on desk top.
    4. Blue screen memory dump while on desk top
    5. Screen going black while playing games.
    6. screen going black while on desk top
    7. Windows freezing while computer is starting up.
    8. I was playing a game and my computer started making a random noise then shut down.
    9. was doing a memory diagnostic and it completed but when windows was starting up again my computer froze so I was not able to see the report.
I did scan disk, did a computer restore point, defragment and some other stuff. I think it may be hardware damage because the computer over heated. And all of these problems just started happening all at once.. it did not snow ball or anything. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

I agree with GordOfTheJungle, it is probably due to the overheating issue.  If it is under warranty, definitely take advantage of the factory service.  If it isn't, and you are not a "do it yourself" type person, then a repair center is the way to go.  If you work on your own systems, the X505 is a little more complex to service than most of the laptops I have worked on, but not by much.
I would highly recommend cleaning the vents at least once a year, and applying fresh Artic Silver thermal compound to the processor.  Even running an extreme processor in my X505, I have not experienced any cooling issues.

  • Qosmio X500/00X System Recovery (Factory Reset) From Hard Disk Drive or Separate Disk

    Hey Guys,
Looking for your advice and any links if any...cheers in advance
    My Situation
    In December 2009 I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X500 - Model No. PQX33A-00X00J
At the time I upgraded my purchase from Toshiba Reseller BD4U, going from the standard 1x 500GB Sata drive + 1x 64GB SSD... to instead having 2x 500GB sata drives. I purchased with 3 year onsite next business day warranty, that is is now expired.
It came loaded with MS Win 7 Premium Home Edition - but no disks provided.
    My Needs
I need/want to factory reset my PC - its starting to run slow
I need to re-partition from my existing 4x partitions to just having 2
    The Issues
Possibly as a result of upgrading the disk drives at time of purchase, I don't believe I have a hidden Recovery partition in order to do a System Recovery from the Hard Disk Drive - see image of my current partitions attached
I don't have Win 7 OS installation disks or Toshiba Driver disks as they should have been installed by Toshiba
    My Questions
Do You agree that I DONT have a Recovery Partition - when looking at the partition image? I'm confused on this point coz people say its hidden!?
Given I have no Toshiba Drivers Disk or Windows 7 OS disks - what should I do? I'm thinking of downloading Win 7 (use my product key from sticker under PC) and making a disk/USB (but need to learn how)
Is this where I get ALL necessary Toshiba drivers for my PC from?
Does Toshiba provide a link on its site and instructions on where to get Win 7 from so I can make a recover disk??
    Notes
Tried to email Toshiba support but at step 1 of their email process validation failed due to my PC being out of warranty so will call them on Monday instead
THANK YOU THANK YOU, for any help you can give big ro small
    Cheers
    Rick

WOW, thanks Macius for that great, full and thorough reply...cheers mate
I suspected I didn't have a recovery partition - so thanks for confirming it as I planned to risk it and try! I guess it doesn't really matter why, and it would be futile to go and blame the re-seller or Toshiba at this late stage in the game in hopes they would help...
Yeah, I just went to Microsoft Software Recovery hoping to download Win 7 OS and create a recovery disk but of course Microsoft would NOT allow it due to it being software that was pre-installed on the device blah blah blah (see error image)
And I didn't bother back then in 2009 to create recovery media as you wisely descibed, mostly due to laziness and mentally putting it in the 'too hard basket'...I didn't really understand it - or much about computers at the time.
Re - your Option #2 - thanks for confirming Toshiba drivers. I could/can do this - but don't really want to buy something I already have, perhaps I'll check out ebay or see if a friend has a disk
Re - your Option #1 - I'm currently based in Vietnam and wont be back in Oz till late in the year, so will see if I can find a reliable Toshiba service provider here - but wont hold me breath on this one
I'm thinking that IF Option #1 is a No-Go then - maybe Plan B or Option #3 could be:
Do an Audit of Programs to identify those I don't need and can safely remove - then remove using Control Panel/ Remove Programs tool
Reformat all other drives (not C:// where OS is)
    Then use some re-partition software e.g. Disk-Partiton.com
    Any final thoughts???
Anyhow - thanks very much again
    Rick

  • Qosmio X505-Q870 Performance Issues While on Battery

    Hello to All,
I am new to the forum and wanted to present an issue to the knowledgeable regarding performance (gaming) while on battery.  I've noticed that the Q870 performs very well in all facets of gaming, and there are very few games that this system cannot run.  While connected to the wall outlet, the laptop consistently pumps out 45-75 fps in BFBC2 and the same framerate for other games such as COD: World at War and COD: Modern Warfare.  The problem is the battery....
As soon as I unplug the laptop from AC power, the framerate drops to 15 fps and, in some cases with Crysis, 7 fps.  I have the Power Options set to High Performance, but that doesn't seem to matter.  I understand that the battery will be quickly depleted if games are run at full framerate, however, what's the purpose of a gaming laptop if the battery cannot handle the performance?  I plan to augment the existing battery with a 20,000MaH external battery, however, I need to figure a solution to this problem or else the battery will be useless.  Please help!!

  • Qosmio X505-Q870 with "slow" disk access

i"ve got a several month old X505 870 with 4GB of memory and TWO Hitachi 7200 rpm 500GB SATA II hard drives. The system is used primarily for initial examination of digital images, with each image being around 20MB. Accessing images to display previews is perceptibly slow. YES, the system is tuned to the best of my ability. YES, both disks have been, and are REGULARLY defragmented - both show 0% fragmentation. YES, I've thrown away the original O/S with all the trialware, stupidity, and goop, and installed W7, 64-bit. YES, all the drivers I'm aware of are current, including the Intel storage drivers. NO, other than the periodic Side-By-Side errors that show up every couple days, I'm NOT getting application or system errors.
In Bridge or Lightroom I"m not getting CPU bound, but this thing beats on the disk(s) quite a bit, and takes MUCH longer than the desktop system to display images. YES, the desktop is a slightly faster CPU, but it
also has standard 7200 rpm drives for images, and it's SIGNIFICANTLY faster at retrieving and displaying images in Bridge or Lightroom...
Is there any PRACTICAL (no, putting in 2, 500GB SSD drives is NOT practical) thing that can be done to improve disk performance on this box, 'cause right now it certainly isn't any speedster?

I don't have any empirical evidence about whether the original installation was this slow, but my recollection is the reason I dumped an re-installed a clean W7 was because the original was REALLY a dog. I also wanted to put partitions on the drives and the original installation caused problems with the partitioning... But, I'm confident that the original was definitely not faster...
As far as drivers, I believe I have everything current.
My antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials, but I currently have it turned off. So that's probably not the issue.....
As far as "is it really slow", I can't say. It's SLOWER, but I suppose if you're not doing anything very demanding it'd probably be all right. It's just significantly slower doing what I do, than my desktop. I don't have anything else to compare it to, but it SEEMS (the ever popular "seems") to me that a quad-core with 4GB of memory and 7200 rpm drives should be extremely quick to pull up images and render previews. But, I'll admit my expectations may be too high.
Which is why I'm hoping there's something I've neglected that'll make things perform better. I even dumbed down the interface with the "best performance versus best appearance" thing to see if that'd help. Didn't.

  • Toshiba Qosmio x505 Q870 problem.

I have just installed Battlefield 3 , and i was playing for a while untill my screen went off.
when the screen turned off i was able to hear a loud sound from the laptop might be caused by either the DVD or by some fan inside (I am not sure)
i tried to normally press the shutdown button (Physical touch button on the left side of my keyboard) and then i tried holding it down for a few seconds to force shotdown more than once.
    nothing happened.
I also tried also to press the button NUM LOCK and there was no response.
After a while 10~50mins i found the laptop on the login to windows account screen , and then i logged in and typed in this post
This was the first time such a thing ever happens with me , and i am looking for any explanations and suggestions

I just updated my Video card , and then i started playing BFBC2 with a heat monitoring program on.
CPU cores were at 94 (MAX)
and the GPU were at 70 (MAX).
I am a little bit worried and i would appreciate it to know what did happen exactly

  • Qosmio X505-Q870 Graphics Constantly Crashing

    Hey guys,
I purchased by laptop mid-March and since late-April, this odd behavior has been occuring.
So, while I'm doing work on the laptop (regardless of game, autocad, or just document work) sometimes, the screen will go black, it'll come back on without any card running, go black, and then come back up with a little notice at the right bottom corner of Windows saying that the NVIDIA graphic driver crashed and has been restored.
    Anyone know what's up?
I paid 1.5 grand for this and am worried that there may be a problem with the graphic card.
    Thanks.
    OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

I still have this same problem.  If you get any resolution to this, please let me know.
    Thanks,
