QT 7.1.5: How to merge Video and Audio tracks?

I have a movie without a sound track and a mp3-file which I want to merge. I know that both should have the same length.
First I opened the audio file, selected all, copied it - then opened the video file, selected all and pasted it. Sounds good and functioned properly.
Trying to start the movie on another Macintosh, QT asks for the mp3-file. What went wrong, what to do?

You failed to save the new file as "self-contained".
You should use Save As and check the box for self-contained.

How to unlink video and audio in FCPX

I am new in FCPX.. can someone tell me how to unlink video and audio in FCPX ? and how to mute audio rather than low the -db ?

There's no 'Unlink' audio (as such) in FCP X but if you select a clip in the timeline, and press Shift+Ctrl+S, the audio breaks away from the clip. Select this, and you can toggle it on and off by pressing V.
Take care with this, because it's easy to get the audio out of sync. You need to move the audio and video together if you have to move them, so I would select them both and press Option+G to make them into a Compound Clip (to preserve sync).
To mute the audio embedded in a clip, select the clip in the timeline and press Cmd+4 to open the Inspector.
Click the Audio Tab at the top of the Inspector and uncheck the Audio Waveform(s). Your Audio will be muted.
To mute audio for the entire project, go to the Roles tab in the Timeline Index (next to the film reel icon) and uncheck Audio or Dialogue (as appropriate).

How many video and audio tracks now?

If there is one single bad thing in iMovie is the lack of tracks. Most "consumer editors" would like at least 3 sets of stereo audio tracks and the titles would be nicer on a separate track. But in the iMovie site there is no mention to those things. Strange, every video app site has some specs about video and audio tracks, even the free ones.

Unfortunately the iMovie '06 has the exact same arrangement as '05: One video track and two audio tracks. I was so badly hoping for at least a second video track in the new version because that makes things so much better, but for some reason they didn't add one. They probably know that less people would shell out $300 for Final Cut Express if they added a second video track to iMovie. sigh
A big disappointment.

Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.

Thank you for the replies. Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems. I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work. I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic. When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones. This actually helped. I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems. I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac. I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed. Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

Independant video and audio tracks separate

I am using Premiere Elements 12 on a PC. I am working on a multimedia project combining video, stills and audio. Independant video and audio tracks separate when I insert a still image on another track. The tracks are not grouped or linked together. I do not know how to prevent this happening. The manual suggests pressing the Alt button when inserting but this does not work.

Holding down the Alt key of the computer main keyboard does work and works well under most ordinary conditions. Please practice and refine your Alt technique with care patience. But....
Have you tried keeping certain parts of your established track content together by using the Group command after selecting a
bunch of clips all at one time?

Video and Audio Track Destination in FC Pro

Sometimes my Source Bar (In the Timeline) doesn't allow me to execute it. That is in the video and audio tracks.

Hi there,
I just came across this problem. I had a clip in the viewer with video and audio and a sequence in the timeline. But somehow FCP wouldn't let me edit the video into the timeline, I couldn't patch the video.
So I opened up another sequence. Same thing.
Third sequence, and the video track selector miraculously appears.
Any ideas? After I quit and restarted FCP, it all worked normally.
Tales from the not-so-far-side, I guess.....

Can I link and lock video and audio tracks - layers - as in Photoshop?

I'd like to link and lock entire clips of video and audio tracks, as I might in Photoshop, so that I can insert some material ahead of this group without having to move each separate tack in my timeline. I have a group of clips which works well together now, and it would be so nice to be able to link them, lock them together as on unit, and just insert the new material into the timeline ahead of this piece. Any ideas?

What version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system?
For now, a generalized Premiere Elements Windows answer.....
You would select all the clips (all at one time) that you want to move together, then Clip Menu/Group.
Or right click anywhere in the selection to bring up the pop up menu including the Group option.
Have you been there and done that yet?
Please supply more information so that we can fine tune the information that you seek.

Combining Separate Video and Audio tracks

Hi, what's the best way to combine a video and audio tracks into a single file? We will be given the video and audio from 13 volleyball games, and each game will be coming as a file.mpg (mpeg2) video and an mp3 file.
We're looking for a way to either manually bring it in, or bulk automate a way of combining the two tracks for each game to have one file that is in a format that doesn't need to be rendered in FCP.

Not if they're form separate devices or in different codecs. the MPEG2 files are the big problem, next time, have your people shoot conventional DV and use the audio interface to bring in a feed from your announce booth or radio station or whatever so it's in sync.

Video and Audio Track Selection

Is there any quick way to do this? Nothing in the keyboard shortcuts menu that seems close to "Sleect Video Track 1", "Select Audio Track 1", etc. Is it only achieveable with a mouse? Thanks all.

I have made custom keyboard shortcuts for video and audio tracks using Toggle Track.
I use numbers 1 to 7 for Video and Shift 1-7 for Audio.
In conjunction with Mouse clicking and shift mouse clicking on tracks..does all that I need.

Importing iMovie08 sequence via XML ends up with unlinked video and audio channel (only one of the stereo channels; see other post).
It is possible to link each clips audio and video track individualy.
Is there a way to do it in batch mode for all the clips in de timeline??

If you set an IN point in two clips you can merge them using the Merge Clips... command with the in points option. The IN points you choose can be anywhere and for anything. They can be where the clapper hits and sounds, they can be where a drum stick hits a cymbal, they can be where someone is clapping, they can be where a body falls from a building onto the sidewalk... Anything that helps you sync the sound with picture.

Clips - video and audio tracks

Hi all. I am quite confused about the a couple things when adding a video clip to the timeline...
First, when I add the clip I want the audio to be added to A1 and A2, but I am not sure how to make sure the audio tracks go there rather than other audio tracks - they seem to want to go to A7 & A8. I tried selecting and deselecting the auto select buttons of the audio tracks, without either helping. I tried looking through the manual for help but did not find help (or did not understand what was there).
Second, when I add the clips now, only 1 audio channel is added (to A7) if I add the clip from the Bin to the video track. If I drag the clip to the audio section of the timeline, both audio tracks are added as is the video. I could move the video if I want, but doing things this was does not allow the audio and video to be linked.
I do not know what is going on here.

What video track are you using? V4? With default patch, (v1/V1, a1/A1, a2/A2), I think a video clip put on V4 will send audio to A7 & A8. In other words, default patch will retain relationships among V1/A1/A2, V2/A3/A4, etc.
Move your v1 patch to the desired video track and leave the a1 & a2 tabs at A1 & A2 and your audio should go to A1 & A2.
A side question: Why does it matter? You should mix down your audio before export anyway.
If none of this helps, you might try trashing the FCE preferences, always a good idea when the app behaves strangely. Here's how:
