QT 7 & QT 10 Firewire capture.

I have a 17" MBP running OS 10.8. If I capture video via firewire using QT 7, the file is poured onto the HD and when I stop the recording, the file is automatically saved and instantly playable. But QT 10 wont do this. It needs me to export the file before I can play it. This is time consuming with a 10 minute recording. Why the difference and can I get QT 10 to act like QT 7?

Indeed, a further search on the side lead me to this page :
http://perian.org/
and now it works again !
I still don't get how an update could change the system like this.
Anyway, thanks for the reply

While firewire capture works perfectly from time to time, it seems that more often it does not. Specifically, the capture freezes on the first frame present when opening the capture window. Sometimes it just starts working later in the day. Any ideas what conditions could exist to cause firewire capture to work perfectly sometimes but not others? It doesn't make a difference what deck or camera is attached. It is hit or miss with any device.

  • By passing  Kona for direct firewire capture/control

    Greetings
First let me qualify this by saying that it's quite possible I'm missing something very basic in FCP and MAC config and use. I'm not immune to overlooking the obvious or stupid mistakes. So having said that...
I'm running a FCP 5 on a MacPro with a Kona AJA card.
In the course of trying to capture HD video from a Sony HVR-M25U deck I've had problems matching capture res/format and deck control. Tried every possible combo of capture and control preset available.
To make a very long story short, the best I could do was capture 1080i via the "capture now". (Obviously I don't get TC from the tape which will cause problems in future edit sessions.)
In the course of many discussions a possible problem might be that the KONA card is some how preventing direct Firewire capture and control.
So my question is, is there an easy way during boot up to disable the KONA? If there is a way it would (probably) allow a standard firewire ingest.
    I hope this makes sense.
I guess what I'm asking for is a way to fool my Mac into thinking there is no KONA without having to physically remove it from the slot.

You don't have to disable the Kona to capture firewire, just select an appropriate easy setup (non Kona)
so you have a Kona LE?
What we usually do with HDV that needs to be repeatable or be used in other systems is bump to HDCam with new code (to avoid TC breaks) then capture the result of that.
If it doesn't need to be repeatable we come in pro res or DVCProHD so editing/ finishing is a frame based codec.
If you have hdmi on the deck and or camera you might want to look at

  • Is firewire capture broadcast quality?

I know the data rate from firewire is only 3.6MB per sec. i have only a sony DSR11 dv deck which has only firewire, i figured out that if i want uncompressed 8.5mb per sec i need component out, video capture card and a bigger deck. right now, my clients are happy with the output, and the tv stations are accepting the outputs i am giving but i wonder if it is really broadcast quality . thanks
    yours
    sameer

    Hi Sameer
What do you understand to mean by broadcast quality?
Generally, a broadcaster will provide a set of strict guidelines, on the technical side mainly related to legal chroma and luma limits, limitations on flashing imagery etc, and on the artistic side sometimes relating to the quality of image. Broadcasters differ and so do their levels of tolerance relating to these guidelines.
By firewire capture I think you mean DV quality footage. You can capture uncompressed footage over firewire too.
As Denis said, converting DV footage to uncompressed won't improve the quality of your footage - it is still originating from a compressed source - however it might allow you to perform more exacting grading on the images and bring it within legal broadcast limits.
Most of the broadcasters I have worked with have required footage to be provided on Digibeta masters but that doesn't mean you couldn't take a Mini DV tape to a facilities house and have them convert it over before you submit for broadcast.
At the end of the day, if the broadcaster accepts your footage, it is broadcast quality in their eyes and you have no problems. For your own peace of mind, though, do make a legalisation pass to make sure your footage will conform when seen on other televisions.

  • Noise in Firewire capturing

    Hi there!
We are using Flash Media Live Encoder 2.5, trying to capture
directly FLV files from a DV camera, trough a firewire connection
for both video and audio. On the contrary to what we have read in
these forums, everything is working properly with the firewire
connection... except for a strange noise we get.
With some of our tapes (not with all of them) we get a
strange high pitch noise in the FLV file. Of course, that noise is
not in our tape, as we always get perfect sound from a mixer. Which
can be the reason? Anyone else with these symptons?
    Thanks in advance!

    Try following:
click the Camera app, slide the photo-movie slider on the bottom right to movie then back completely. Close Camera app, double click home button twice and really quit camera.
If that does not help, do it again, then do a reset: hold both Home and Power button for about 10 seconds until you see the white apple logo then let go.

  • Firewire Capture Problem...

    Hello Community!
I am having problems capturing from any of my FireWire cameras in QT and FCP. I have posted three screenshots, they should be pretty self-explanatory.
http://mmathias.com/quicktime/ (I hope the link doesn't get filtered)
The problem started when I used QT to capture a clip and switched from "h.264" to "Device Native" in the Quicktime settings dialog. Has anybody seen something like this before? I don't think it's a hardware problem since it started when I changed the setting. I have tried several DV players and cameras and I also changed the Firewire cable and even tried the Firewire 800 port. Still, nothing changed.
The weird thing is that the blocks always stay in the same place.
Btw, audio is ok. Weird, huh?
    Can anybody help?
    Powerbook G4, 1.67MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have a similar problem. I was able to log and capture footage from a panasonic camera, but when I wanted to load more footage from the same tape and camera, I get a Timecode error, and it tells me to ensure VCR is in record mode. It is. It also tells me the firewire is missing! I am using the same equipment as before, when it worked okay. can anyone help?

  • HDV Firewire capture....audio monitoring

I came across this post while searching the forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7212884&#7212884
Has anyone found a solution to this problem of being forced to listen to the audio when capturing HDV over FireWire. I really need to work on another app and listen to audio and I don't want to listen to what is importing. Thanks in advance for any help.

The big plus with HDMI is an all digital uncompressed signal in a full raster 1920x1080 resolution 4:2:2 color space hardware conversion into the capture card. It is my opinion that the quality is the best it will ever be. Yes you can transcode to Pro Rez given you have an Intel unit or quad G5 to keep up with the software conversion. Yes by transcoding you will avoid HDV conforming. It is well known that converting to an all i-frame codec like DVC Pro HD or Pro Rez is a great way to work from HDV sources. And yes you can either monitor HDV or any other HD format with this card.
    Good Luck

  • Not able to firewire capture..

Recently in my schools tv lab, our cameras firewire out in the cameras has seemed to malfunction or break. None of the computers will reconize the cameras input. We have tried both apple, and PC? Could this be just a big fluke, or is there something were doing wrong. Either way, we lost our last camera, and our publicly funded high school tv lab, has no way of capturing any video at all.

HOT SWAP...pulling the plug while the device is connected and powered on. Big no no. Drives you can unmount, cameras, turn off...THEN disconnect. Even then people are paranoid and say only disconnect when all devices, even the computer, are off.
Just a quick hunch...upgrade to quicktime 7 or Tiger lately?

  • Firewire Capture

I am running Win8.1 with a Sony TRV 340 digital handycam. I installed a firewire card and it showed in Device Manager OK. In Adobe it is not recognized in Premiere Elements 11.  Any takers?

    flip
What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 11 running on?
    Given...
    a. firewire cable with correct pin configuration
    b. firewire cable going from DV port of camera to firewire port of computer
    c. camera on to "Play Edit"
What are you planning on doing DV data or HDV data capture firewire into the Premiere Elements 11 capture window?
Before starting the capture, are you...
    a. Assuring that the Premiere Elements 11 project preset is set correctly by you manually or the project automatically for
DV 4:3 - NTSC DV Standard
DV 16:9 - NTSC DV Widescreen
HDV - NTSC HDV HDV 1080i30
before you start the capture process?
If you have been there and done all that and your camera is being recognized in the Device Manager, then it is time to do
    some cross checking with
    a. capture firewire into Windows Movie Maker
    b. capture firewire into HDVSplit if HDV data involved - http://www.videohelp.com/tools/HDVSplit
Please rule in or out the above if you have not already and then let us know the outcome.
    Thanks.

  • FireWire Capture Pixel Size

I can capture BetaSP at work through a Kona system, but at home I only have FireWire. When I capture from MiniDV at home (consumer cam), I choose the DV 720x480 setup. When I open these clips in QuickTime player, they come up smaller:
    Format: DV, 720 x 480 (640 x 480), Millions
    FPS: 30.06
    Data Rate: 28.77 mbits/sec
    Normal Size: 640 x 480
    My Beta capture looks like:
    Format: DV, 720 x 480 (640 x 480), Millions
    FPS: 29.98
    Data Rate: 28.77 mbits/sec
    Normal Size: 720 x 480
It appears to show up fine in FCP, but do I need to change something? FYI, this is for cable TV. Thanks for any tips.
    --Alex

Ignore the QT player. Look at the clips info within FCP - it will give the true story.
However, you do want to be sure the DV capture is NOT running at 30.06fps. Sonys and Canons have been noted for doing this on occassion.
    good luck.

  • Balckmagic Intensity Pro Vs. HDV Firewire capture

Assuming a suitable computer and FCP6.
what are the benefits , if any, of capturing via the Intensity Pro card using the HDMI input?
so far what i know is that it uses mjpeg compression (better than HDV compression?)
and you can capture using ProRes codec.
thus avoiding the GOP timeline and long renders.
some suggest the image quality is quite a bit better too.
plus you get a HDMI output for a monitor which seems a big plus for the low cost.
anyone used this card like this?

  • How do I turn off live preview during HDV firewire captures?

My cpu uses a lot of cpu during HDV captures, and I know that a lot of it has to do with the live preview (ie, the window that shows you what is being captured). How do i turn this live preview off? Thanks

If the metronome got recorded on your track from a mic with it coming out of your speakers (the only way it could have been recorded) there's no way to take it out. When you say you turned it off, did you just uncheck it in the control menu? Or did you go to the preferences and change its behavior there? I have mine set for recording only, not on playback. But if you turned it off in the control menu, then it should not be present, unless you inadvertently recorded it from your speakers as I described, and it is not going anywhere. This is one reason it is best to monitor your recording with headphones and not speakers, since anything that comes out of them will be recorded with a live mic close by.

  • Firewire capturing won't work anymore...

Everytime I hook a DV or HDV cam to my mac and try to entering capture mode on any video editing application (Final cut Pro, Premiere Pro, iMovie, iMovie HD), the programm freezes up till I shut the camera off...and capturing works fine on a windows PC.
    I am using OSX 10.5.4, Quicktime 7.5, Sony VX1000e, Canon HV30 Pal.
Does someone has any idea what could be wrong with my system?

    - I just bought my Powerbook last summer, so I don't
think that battery problem applies to the 1.67 GHz
model. If it does, the doc doesn't list a part #.
It's very unlikely but you know we're talking about batteries so you can never be sure about 'em.
Anyway verify that your clock battery is fine:
-Fully charge your PB's external battery
-Work on the battery untill it drains out the PB goes to sleep
-Leave the PB asleeb for 2-5 minutes
-Plug in the mains adaptor, wake up the PB and reboot
If date+time is displayed correctly, then everything's fine + dandy with the battery
What I don't understand is why one of the drives has
yet to malfunction. It has gone through the same
environment as all the others, and I've yet to have a
    problem.
hmm unfortuantely IDE drives can fail for a myriad of reasons, keep in mind that they're only built for low price (not performance and reliability)
It's utilized the same cable, the same
enclosure, and the same software installations and
updates. Everything has been running fine until about
    a month ago.
Do you think the drives are now damaged
because of some software setting, or could the drive
    possibly work with another computer?
Since you had 2 drives fail on the same (and as you say intact/unchanged channel (environment)) then there's obviously somthing wrong with your channel in a physical/link level (at some point).
Or some malfuctioning software is causing corruption on your HD channel.
Did you go through a brody's faq? it's an excellent starting point

  • DVCPRO HD 720P25 FIREWIRE CAPTURE WARNING

I've just finished a job that required shooting DVCPROHD 720p25
As there's no PAL capture option yet we assumed that shooting on a Varicam over 60 frames and once captured at 720p60 it would convert over to a 720p25 timeline with no hassle.
    But we assumed wrong..........
This worked perfectly for 75% of the footage but the rest looked like it was playing a jumpy varispeed clip.
After hours of tests I found only way around it was to export the clip from an editing timebase 59.94 timeline, export as 720p25 and import back in.
(Trying to do this in the media manager rejected the process)
Again this either worked 1st time or took up to 5 attempts.
Eventually all the shots we wanted converted
I thought I'd share it with all you PAL editors waiting for Apple to pull their finger out and sort out a DVCPROHD 720p25 capture option
Come on Panasonic sort it out, the footage looks great but your doing us PAL boys no favours
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.33 GHz, 3GB Memory, Miglia Dualdisk 640GB (FW 800 88MB/Sec)

FCP 5.1.2 has support for PAL DVCPRO HD. 720p50 and 25. Your issue is that you shot 720p60 and are now trying to convert it to PAL. And you are doing so without using any converters.
You can try the Standards Converter from www.nattress.com (there is a demo available)...barring that you can have your footage transferred at a dub facility.
But converting NTSC to PAL isn't as simple as draggng it into a PAL timeline.

  • Scart VCR - capture card (firewire/usb) ??

    Hello,
I have a couple of old VHS tapes I would like to transfer to iMovie etc. The VCR I have is a Sony Hifi Stereo - (only output is Scart, and Component L & R for audio). I could get SCART to component cable if required.
Can anyone recommend a USB or Firewire Capture device? I have a Macbook Pro and would like to get something reasonably priced as - it's only 2 or 3 hours maximum of VHS footage I need to import.
There seem to be heaps available in the PC market..
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Alessandro

Hello, thanks ! Didn't think of that.. maybe I could even borrow someone's camcorder to do it? I'm not really in the market for a camcorder to be honest.
    Found this :
    http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/uk/Products/ConsumerProducts/Home+Video/Studio+Family/Pinnacle+Video+Capture+forMac.htm
Seems to be ok, but has only just been released or not even available yet in the UK.
Around $99 US would be cheaper than a new Camcorder too!
Are there any other ones people have used?
