Qt applications over ssh tunnel: very slow redrawing

Regularly I do not use many Qt applications, mostly Skype. I run it over ssh tunnel from another computer within the same local network for long time. After recent system update I noticed it became very slow refreshing its graphics. I checked several Gtk and Qt applications and found that Gtk ones work almost with the "native" speed, while Qt ones with that damn slow redrawing...
I tried ssh with both "ForwardX11" and "ForwardX11Trusted" - there is no difference. I'm using no DE with xmonad WM (tried TWM - no difference either) in x86_64 box.
Any directions/advices/ideas?
Thanks!

  • Slow performance of fetching BLOB data over network is very slow

    Dear Experts,
    We are deploying a GIS application which handles with BLOB datatypes. Database Server is in RHEL and in 11gR2. The application is using asp.net 3.5 and using ODP.NET to connect with Oracle. But here is a performance chart which shows that performance is very slow when application and database server lie on different subnetwork.
    Case      Login Time
    Same Server(Both in 192.168.9.23)     20-25 sec
    Same Subnet (DB:192.168.9.25) (App: 192.168.9.23)     60-80 sec
    Different Subnet (DB:192.168.11.153) (App:192.168.9.23)     More then 5 minutes
    So what is the reason behind this and how can I improve performance if I want to keep application and database in diff machine?
    Thanks in advance.

    Also, look into the various lob settings in ODP.NET.
    I believe that by default in ODP.NET the LOB will be fetched in separate roundtrips but you can change this my messing with certain properties or using certain methods - apologies, a bit imprecise.
    If you have a network issue then doing more roundtrips than you need to is just going to exacerbate the situation.
    Trace the session - if it's networking or roundtrips you should see symptoms of it in a 10046 trace.

  • Localhost Application seems to be very slow?

    Hey,
    i built an Air App wich use Colfusion to query a database and stuff like that...
    On my mashine, this is real fast - If i run the App on another Pc in our local-Network the requests are very very slow. Is that normal ?
    Greetings from germany, nico

    I don't know anything about AIR, but where's the DB in relation to your machine, and then again in relation to the other machines that are slow?  Any network differences?
    What's performance like on the slow machines if you use a standard DB client to make the same queries that the AIR app is making?

  • File copy over AFP / SMB very slow on Mavericks

    Hi guys.
    I have a retina macbook pro (early 2013) and a mac mini (late 2012).
    Both are running 10.9.1. The mac mini has OS X server installed and 2 USB 3.0 harddisks attached to it in RAID0.
    I have a Thunderbolt display hooked up to my MBP. I have a 1gbit wired network between the two machines.
    Now comes the problem: file copy from the USB 3.0 RAID array to the macbook pro over AFP or SMB is slow, I only get around 8 MB/sec.
    First I thought it was a wiring issue (I created my own ethernet cables). However, I tried copying the file via SCP (i.e. SSH) and then I get 50 MB/sec. Still not close to the maximum for gigabit, but at least a lot higher than 8 MB/sec.
    I tried googling if anybody else has the same issue, but couldn't really find definitive answers.
    I have tried everything with both jumbo frames of and on. Both give the same results.
    What's even stranger is if I connect my MBP over 5 GHz to my airport instead of wired, I get 20 MB/sec over AFP....
    As far as I know the problem did not arise in the pre-Mavericks time.
    Does anybody have any suggestions or solutions? 8 MB/sec is not really that nice

    Have you checked your ethernet speed/duplex settings on the ethernet port and XP machine?

  • Ssh access very slow to some accounts

    I have OS X Server 10.6.2 up and running. If I ssh from a client machine to the server as the admin user, I get a password prompt, and on entering the password I immediately get to a shell prompt. If I do the same but specify another user, I get a password prompt and then there is a long wait of about a minute after entering the password before I get a shell prompt.
    I believe I have DNS set up correctly. Both forward and reverse DNS is working for both addresses on my local network and for external addresses. Running the "sudo changeip -checkhostname" command shows no problems.
    On examining the logs I see a few worrying looking entries such as:
    Dec 14 11:10:39 mms edu.mit.Kerberos.CCacheServer[1478]: launchctl start error: No such process
    But I still see that the user that saw the long delay before logging in successfully has valid Kerberos tickets, as per the output of the "klist" command:
    mms:~ sh$ klist
    Kerberos 5 ticket cache: 'API:Initial default ccache'
    Default principal: [email protected]
    Valid Starting Expires Service Principal
    12/14/09 11:31:04 12/14/09 21:31:04 krbtgt/[email protected]
    renew until 12/15/09 11:30:33
    12/14/09 11:31:34 12/14/09 21:31:04 host/[email protected]
    renew until 12/15/09 11:30:33
    Which would imply that Kerberos is doing its job correctly?
    Any suggestions about what might be causing the delays I'm seeing and what I might do to correct the problem?

    I'm still struggling with this and drawing a blank searching for similar reports. Does anyone else see this problem? I'm beginning to suspect it might be something unique to my setup.
    To add a further piece of information, the home directory of the account which is slow to connect to is an afp mount and the first thing I see in the system log after the long delay is a line like the following:
    Feb 9 11:21:36 mms sshd[50749]: afp home directory mount succeeded
    A pwd run from this account shows:
    /Network/Servers/mms.marske.local/Users/sh
    and the mount command shows the following info:
    map -fstab on /Network/Servers (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    I was thinking that maybe it was the afp automount that was taking so long except for two things.
    1) The disk is local to the server, and
    2) If I logout of this account an issue the command "ls /Network/Servers/mms.marske.local/Users/sh" from another account, the directory listing returns immediately.
    Any thoughts?

  • Time Capsule: First backup over ethernet is very slow

    My understanding is that a direct ethernet connection between my Imac and Time Capsule would make the initial backup process faster, but I did not notice any improvement whatsoever and the first backup is proceeding veeeeeeery slow. I was wondering if there was something I was missing when I connected by cable.
    Thank you for your help!

    Felix,
    The first backup I did was wirelessly and it was slow.
    So, I erased the TC Hard Disk and hooked it up via ethernet.
    It went much faster.
    I was doing about 1.1 GB every 5 minutes using ethernet.

  • Rearranging application using iTunes is very slow

    I was trying to rearrange my applications on my iPhone using iTunes and everytime I dragged and dropped an application to a new spot iTunes got stuck and the pinwheel of death appeared.  I would say that after each drop iTunes became unresponsive for approximately 5 seconds (sometimes longer).  I have just upgraded to iTunes 11.1 on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) and I also just upgraded my iPhone to iOS 7 (AT&T iPhone 5).  Does anybody else have this issue?  It makes the feature in iTunes unusable.  I got more done faster by just dragging the apps around on my iPhone screen...

    This thread discusses what may be the same issue as the one you are having.

  • OIM BP1 over PS1 is very slow

    Hi All,
    Thought I share with you some information, in case you run into a similar situation.
    When applying BP1 on a 11.1.1.5 PS1 system, it can take a long time to run.
    On our system with has been in production for around 8 months, it took 1 day and 8 hours to run.
    SR was created to ask Oracle to speed up the "create materialized view" task which is the problem area.

  • Very slow redraw

    Hi - this video shows Photoshop CS4 (without Open GL enabled - since it's completely useless with a fully updated Nvidia 7300) trying to hide and show guides on a simple image.
    This has to be the first time since my old IBM that I'm the one waiting for the computer to finish.

    Well If I was that update, I'd be pissed for only giving me a .0.1 status. I may not be a full version update like the big guys, but it sure would have been nice to be a respectable .0.5
    Thanks, worked like a charm.

  • MacBook PRO very slow Tiger performance

    dear all,
    I have seen this topic many times but unfortunetly none of the tips mentioned has solved my issues.
    Basically I am running OS X Tiger on a Mac Book PRO with 1G of RAM.
    CPU wise, no problem, as far as I can see the usage is 30% CPU on average.
    RAM wise, about 70% of the RAM is in use.
    Now, when I use usual OS X application, the whole systems becomes very slow, for example I have a few (2 or 3) text files open with SubEthaEdit, one terminal window open with just a SSH connection to another machine, and then the regular apps like itunes, Mail, Safari, Address Book, Calendar, Transmit and AdiumX running as well as a few widgets like Clock, Calculator and the Stock Market quotes.
    Now, for example when I put my mouse on the Dock, it fails to respond immediately, taking a few seconds to actually display the app name.
    More over, if for example a Terminal window is down in the task bar and I click on, it sometime takes 10 seconds to come up.
    Same with Adium, I click on one of my contacts, it takes 10 / 20 secs to display the chat window, and if I am lucky I can start typing in it.
    Generally, just after a boot, the system is fine, but as soon as I start a few applications, the systems becomes very slow, even sometimes fails to respond.
    One particularity is that I work with a Japanese username under a English OS X, as far as I know, this shouldn't be a problem.
    Other thing is that I enabled the OS X firewall, but I am still experiencing the same issue when not connected to any network.
    I hope those are enough informations concerning my issue, one more detail is that I did disable startup items and check if no extra deamon was running on the system (I did Repair my disk permission as well)
    If anyone has an idea on where to check next and what could cause this slowdown issues, that would be great.
    Thanks in Advance!
    Alexis

    20 GB of swap? something is definitely wrong. I run more applications than you, which are more memory-intensive, and my swap never goes above 512 MB. Granted, I have 1.5 GB of RAM, but still...
    Putting swap on a different partition of the same disk won't help at all. The bottleneck is still disk I/O, plus now the heads of the hard disk must seek farther to go between swap and reading/writing your actual data.
    I would open your applications one by one, from a fresh boot, and see which one eats up all the memory. 20 GB is an obscene amount, and points to a problem.
    Edit: I checked again. Menumeters says I'm using 256 MB of total swap space right now, but in Activity Monitor my VM size is listed as 5.46 GB. I'm assuming that's what you're looking at in Activity Monitor. Still, 20 GB of VM size seems obscene to me.

  • Mac Pro with OS mountain lion working very slow

    I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.2. the mac is working very slow. It takes a lot of time to boot. Much longer than windows PC. Applications are also running very slow. How to speed up the mac and improve its performance? Plz help!!!

    We're a workstation/tower forum.
    Having more RAM has little or diminishing affect unless you are runnning apps that need and can use it (graphics being one, such as CS5 and later).
    Many laptop owners and desktop like SSD for shorter boot (Mac always boots fast, quicker than Windows, use both).
    If it were me I would
    Backup of coure, TimeMachine and maybe one other method or set is useful, then do a clean install and reload the OS and let it do all the updates.
    Most of the time after a lot of digging around and questions and answers, it gets down to "Did you install xyz" and a list of 3rd party programs, drivers and apps that you added that aren't part of the core OS or from Apple. Whether Norton (notorious) or some "cleaner" program or even something you need but which may not be compatible with or needed with OS X and Mountain Lion.
    You can also set aside 100GB and run Windows natively as well as a guest VM OS.
    Along with monitoring RAM, disk activity, I've seen RAM DIMMs that were 'loose' or not fully seated - even though Lion OS ran well the second that they tried to install Windows 7 on their MacBook Pro it had errors and could not complete. They had upgraded the RAM on their own. Just odd that OS X was that immune and insensitive.
    But this is best off where others with the very same topic can be found in Mountain Lion and MacBook Pro forums. (we get way too many MBP in Mac Tower Pro) MacBook Pro

  • Applewroks is very slow when initiating or when opening any file.

    Every certain time, after erasing my hard disk and installing operating system and appleworks, the application begins with a symptom that is put recurrent more and more, when trying to execute the application this is put very slow and if attempt to open a file happens exactly the same.
    I cannot give with which it causes this fault, the other applications (OS x 10.2.8, MS Word X, Saffari, etc.) they work without no problem.
    I would like to know if there is some user who happens something to him similar and which would be the solution that it avoids to erase everything and to return to install?

    I wonder if anybody tried to run ibm pcomm application over smart tunnel to connect to the mainframe. It is telnet like software. I am trying to make it work but I think I am missing something. By the way I can RDP to Wintel on the same subnet. It works fine using port forwarding but to confusing for end users. Thank you in advance.

    Are you referencing the correct process in the Smart Tunnel list?

  • Sqlsrv very slow over network

    I'm using sqlsrv (php_pdo_sqlsrv_55_ts.dll and php_sqlsrv_55_ts.dll) in PHP (5.5.12, CLI version on Windows 8.1) to connect to a SQL Server 2012 over a VPN tunnel. But the transfer rate for large result sets is very slow.
    Testing SSMS on the same PC over the same VPN tunnel for this query (query is just for testing purposes, I also tried other queries with large data sets and all showed the same performance issues):
        SELECT *
        FROM [Data].[dbo].[Logins]
        WHERE date >= '2014-01-27 00:00:00.000' AND date < '2014-01-29 00:00:00.000'
    returns about 100,000 rows in 4 seconds. Checking the transfer rate on my firewall/VPN shows 2,500 KB/s (on a 100mbit network) while the query is running.
    Using PHP:
        sqlsrv_configure('ClientBufferMaxKBSize', 1024*1024);
        $dbconnect = "SERVER\\HERE";
        $dbconinfo = array("UID" => "user", "PWD" => "pass", "Database" => "Data")
        $conn = sqlsrv_connect( $dbconnect, $dbconinfo);
        $sql = "
        SELECT *
        FROM [dbo].[Logins]
        WHERE date >= '2014-01-27 00:00:00.000' AND date < '2014-01-29 00:00:00.000'
        $options = array();
        $options["Scrollable"] = SQLSRV_CURSOR_CLIENT_BUFFERED;
        $options["QueryTimeout"] = 30000;
        $stmt = sqlsrv_query( $conn, $sql, array(), $options);
    runs 40 seconds and the firewall/VPN shows less than 150 KB/s while the query is running. Task-Manager shows around 5% CPU load for the script.
    I used SQLSRV_CURSOR_CLIENT_BUFFERED just for testing, because it reads the result in its own buffer without any further PHP code. Fetching each set of data without buffering is just a little bit slower (around 45 seconds).
    I also tried a PDO version which lead to the same result.
    ConnectionPooling 0 or 1 didn't make any difference either.
    Changing server name to DNS vs. IP adress also made no difference.
    LogSubsystems -1 and LogSeverity -1 did not show any issues or anything helpful at all.
    I even used Wireshark to watch the network traffic but couldn't find any big differences between PHP and SSMS versions. But I don't know too much about networking layers.
    So the CPU load is low, there is no HDD use at all, the network transfer rate is extremely slow and the SQL server would be capable to deliver the results very much faster. And it actually is a lot faster with SSMS on the same PC and network connection.
    Why is sqlsrv so very slow?
    Any ideas what might be the issue or what I could try to speed up PHP/sqlsrv would be greatly appreciated.

    Please tell us what are waits assigned to query, you can use below tsql code to get the information.
    select session_id, t.text, start_time, status, command, db_name(database_id) As DBname, USER_NAME(user_id) As UserName, blocking_session_id, wait_type, wait_time, wait_resource, percent_complete from sys.dm_exec_requests
    CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(sql_handle) as t
    This information can help us to understand the problem.
    Thanks,
    Shashikant
    Sadly I don't have the rights on the SQL Server for this query. But from what I gathered from similar issues on the web, SQL Server is most likely waiting for the client.
    I also tried the same testing query now with Power Query in Excel. It's as fast as with SSMS. Just with sqlsrv on PHP it's extremly slow.
    Testing the query on a local SQL Server, it's pretty much instantaneous with SSMS, Excel and sqlsrv on PHP as well.

    While the Deployment Utility appears to be a great tool, it does some things that I'd rather it didn't. One is that it modifies all paths in sequence that it is including from Absolute to Relative. While this is a nice feature for many reasons, it is
