QT Image Degrades

Good morning.
I recently exported a sequence from FCP using the 'QuickTime Movie' option with 'current settings'.
When I play this in FCP (default) all is clear and looks sharp. But when I play the exported sequence using QuickTime there is a very noticeable degradation of quality (lettering is blurry and sharpness of images is nowhere near what they are in the actual footage).
What is happening here?

Have no fear, your video is almost certainly perfect.
You need to set your QT Player to "High Quality" which is found in Window>Show Movie Properties>Video Track. Tick the "High Quality" box near the bottom right.
This only affects playback in QT player ....... it doesn't affect the quality of your video which will always be high.

Quality of some images degrading on export

A customer of ours created a PDF from Indesign CS4 6.0.5 using our custom PDF export presets and noticed that the quality of some of her images degraded or became pixilated jagged however the resolution did not change. They checked the original images and they were fine. The images were layered .psd files, by the way.
I asked our customer for the original document and I was able to re-create the situation on our end. After much testing, I discovered that this only happens on PDF export. Postscripting and distilling the page gave much improved results. Replacing the images fresh on the page also fixed the problem. After speaking with others here, this is not the first time this has happened.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a setting somewhere that will fix it?

It can definitely be seen on print. It is harder to see on screen. The quality of the image is not stellar to start with. We are a magazine printing company and our export setting are set up to not flatten the PDFs.
The problem acts like some sort of corruption in the picture box.

Photo Image Degradation

Thank you for considering my post. I have suffered for years
in making my sites on Frontpage. When it came to working with their
tables and cells I was convinced either they or I was demonically
possesed. I have decided to do my next website in Dreamweaver. I
have MX.
I noticed on my old site (Frontpage), that when I saved and
posted an image to my site, that photo image degraded from its
original clarity (in photography talk, this degradation is called
'noise.') My photos are shot from an 8.3 Canon 20D and it takes
very impressive, sharp and color rich photos. The photos were
originally resized, cropped and saved in Image Composer (and an old
version at that). So I always blamed the loss of clarity on
Frontpage or Image Composer.
In Dreamweaver, I find that when I construct a page which has
a photo image, and when I push that button that lets me see the
page in my browser, I still see a degradation of the photo. I must
admit, I am still using Image Composer to crop, resize and save the
original (now modified) image.
I ask you the following: What causes my photos to loose their
sharpness and color quality? Have you experienced a loss in quality
in posting your photos, and if so, how did you cure it?
I have Fireworks MX, it's just that I don't know if using it
will fix the problem. What should I do? Is some special technique
used in saving photos for a website? Does clarity change if I work
from bitmap images or .jpegs? If so, what format should I use and
work in?

Without a basic understanding of how HTML tables work, you
will likey run
afoul of the same demons in DW as you did in FP. Spend some
time running
through the table tutorials at the DW FAQ link in my sig to
prepare your
skills....

If the image is clear when you put it on the web page, and if
you DO NOT
RESIZE IT ON THE PAGE, then it'll be clear on the web, even
if you make the
page in Notepad. The HTML authoring system makes no
difference at all.

Resizing in the browser.

Nope - not if the image is clear when I export it from the
graphics editor.

Photo-quality images should always be exported as JPG, unless
you have a
special reason for using PNGs.

RAW workflow questions - image degradation over several edits with 08?

I currently use Aperture to manage (and edit) my digital photo library. After reading about iphoto 08, the only major thing I can see preventing me from using it would be the RAW editing.
An example would be a photo taken in RAW format and edited in iPhoto. It is saved as a JPEG. Any future editing ontop of that jpeg and the image begins degrading as levels of compression are added ontop of it (I think).
In Aperture, the raw file is maintained and any editing to the RAW file becomes non-destructive as the RAW format is retained in "real time" (so to speak).
I know iPhoto also retains the original RAW file, but not the edited RAW file.
My question is this: with the great extra features of iPhoto (such as easier integration with .Mac) I am seriously considering a switch, but am concerned about image degradation. For all the semi-pro users, what is your RAW workflow in regards to iPhoto? Do you edit the file once, then when editing is required in the future just re-edit the JPEG or go back to the original RAW?
For any former Aperture users who switched to iPhoto, was it worth it?

Once again, thank you for a most helpful answer. I was wondering about the same issue. I guess this means that when you edit RAW files in iPhoto, it uses a similar approach than Aperture and Lightroom now. With far less options of course, but if you just doing basic editing of white balance and shadow/highlight, iPhoto is an appealing alternative.
If I understand correctly the Raw conversion is done at the system level, so iPhoto and APerture even use the same conversion engine, right?

Images degrading when rendered-

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me. I am working on Fincal Cut HD express and am trying important some images into my edit, make them move using motion/keyframes, however as soon as I render the files the image degrades and the quality becomes so poor it is unusable. I am importing the images as PSD files, 300dpi with no layers (as I need the image to float with no background). I have tried importing them as jpegs, gifs etc however this then gives the image a background and therefore is unusable anyway and anyway the still degrade on rendering. So the image looks fantastic when it is first imported, however as soon as it is rendered it degrades dramatically…..

Welcome to the discussions. As well as Tech2's advice, it's best to resize the images to be appropriate to your needs.
IOW, don't use images that are too large. DPI MEANS NOTHING. Never refer to it again. Dimensions, dimensions, dimensions. What size are you using?

IPad Image Degradation

As professional photographer I was thinking of creating some wallpaper imagery for the iPad so I asked somebody that owns one to put some of my photos on his so I could look at them. When we did the quality was awful: you might say grainy or pixelated.
The images were originally 1024x768 which I understood to be the native resolution of the iPad. In an effort to track down where the image degradation was taking place I had him send an image back to me, once straight from Mail on the iPad and again from his web based Yahoo Mail page. The image that came back from Yahoo was fine, but the image that came back from the iPad via Mail had been reduced in size to 640x480.
The only think I could figure out is that for some reason the iPad reduced the image size which left me rather puzzled. why have a display with a resolution of 1024x768 if the device reduces images to 640x480.
What do I not understand here?

The best way to create wallpaper for the iPad is to start with an image much greater in resolution than the iPad's 1024x768. If you do that then you benefit in two ways.
First, save the image to your iPad, then go into settings, then wallpaper and then select your image in your saved photos. Since the image is large you can pinch and zoom in and out and you can move it around to recompose the image to your liking. Be sure you are satisfied with what it looks like in landscape and portrait by rotating the iPad before setting the image as your wallpaper. It will then save your zoom factor and your recompositioning of the image.
The iPad zooms into your wallpaper when viewed in portrait so as long as your stay within the resolution of your original image in that position before you save your setting then it will look tack sharp in both landscape and portrait, assuming your image was sharp to begin with.
The minimum image resolution for ipad's wallpaper is 1024x1024 if you do not wish the image to be degraded. That's fine if you are happy with the look that you get but you will not be able to pinch and zoom in without severe image degradation and you will not be able to reposition to your image the way you could with a much larger image.
I have no answer to your e-mailing issue as I am not yet using my iPad for e-mail.

Importing full-page images into iBooks Author (without image degradation)

Hi ,, I have had little success importing images created with paint programs such as Corel Sketchpad, Photoshop, Corel Painter, etc. Everything seems to work just fine, but there are pixelated artifacts in the final image that shows on the iPad. I create the orginal images at 1024 x 768 ... and save them as high-qulaity jpgs and pngs .... but still poor qualiting especially where large blocks of solid colors are adjacent to one another.
When I use a vector program such as Flash or Illustrator and export those images as jpgs ... they look perfect on my iPad. I don't want to use a vector program however ... I want to use paint programs.
Anyway have success with paint program images? If so, what is your step-by-step process? Hopefully Apple will fix this bug so that paint program's exported jpgs don't have pixelated artifacts at edge areas. There is also a very noticeable color shift in the imported image .. much ligher and less saturated colors.
In the image below you can see the imported image showing artifacts and the orignal image is not showing artifacts.

An iPad 2 screen is 132 - new ipad is 264.
In cases where you're seeing noticable degradation I wouldn't work with less than 132.
Start high and reduce....don't try to make low do something it can't by simply adjusting the resolution up.
I tend to avoid those 'paint programs' And remember, this isn't just about iBooks Author....iOS does the heavy lifting, but sure, it can only do as good as iBA spits out. I think they're working to trim the sails on compression etc. and it will only get better over time.
The @2x scheme is working well for iOS - I have some stunning graphics for the new iPad in my latest app.

Still Images degrade when exporting

Hi. I am making an audio slide show with IMovie 09, using only still images shot with a Canon 5D. The images I import to Imovie have a very high resolutition and file size(300 dpi and about 5MB compressed), yet when I export the final project, the images are degraded. I can not find anything in preferences or in the help section about why this would be happening. Any thoughts?

How did you perform the export?
I was able to get a pretty good image export by exporting to Quicktime, making a 1440x1080 (my work is 4:3) H264 file at whatever the best quality settings were, audio to big endian 48 kHz, 16 bit.
The share-to-media-browser menu option also makes an H264 file, but I believe the quality setting is lowered and in my case I could only get "Large", which was half the resolution of the settings above.

Exporting advice & image degradation problem-

I am making a short trailer on final cut HD express, which comprises video and still images (made to move using motion/keyframes). The images are imported as PSD files from Photoshop (with no layers and no background). When imported the images look fantastic, however when rendered they degrade dramatically and look awful. I have tried importing them in many different formats but all others give the images a background and still degrade on rendering. I have tried de interlacing them, sharpening the edges etc however once rendering happens the images are degraded. I am trying to view the trailer on an external monitor but in order to do so I first need to burn to disc and do not want to loose further quality in the compression process and therefore was wondering if anyone could recommend the best process. I only have QuickTime as an option but am unsure as to the exact details I should be setting it to to get the best quality final DVD?

PDF preview of iPhoto book shows image degradation

For years I have made iPhoto books first designing pages with text and color imagery in InDesign, then exporting PDFs of the pages to iPhoto via Automator, and then placing the designed pages into blank pages of the iPhoto book. Prior to printing I preview the book by going to Preview in the print dialog box. The preview images have always been spot on regarding what the image quality of the finished book would be. Now I'm trying to make a large book incorporating both color and black and white images. These are elegant, black and white images that have been lovingly restored in Photoshop and feature full tonal ranges. They are TIFF images. Subsequent to making a small, trial run book, I discovered that if I kept the images as grayscale images, they printed too dark. AS a result of phone conversations with Apple and trying the Adobe discussion site, I found that if I resaved the BW images as RGB, the page PDFs I generated when exporting the pages out of InDesign reproduced the BW images perfectly. Likewise, throughout the process of assembling the new iPhoto book, when I placed the pages, the BW images looked gorgeous. However, just prior to uploading the book, I decided to preview the pages and generated a PDF preview in the print dialog box. Lo and behold, all the images show up noticeably different; the BW images lack good blacks--the dark areas seem distinctly muddy compared to the originals. Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening and how I might regain the original look? Thanks. I'm using iPhoto 11 with Snow Leopard on a new iMac.

I don't think you're doing anything incorrectly. I think that the inside page is automatic in the printing process and is not included in the pdf file that is created. Only the cover and pages 1-20 or whatever are added to the pdf file.

How can I avoid pixilation and image degradation when I import PhotoShop files into Final Cut Pro X.9?

When ever I import a RGP file (11.8 MB) into FC 10.9 I get pixilation with jagged images showing up on the full screen view.
Any way or possiblity of solving this problem?

An RGP file? Not officially supported by FCP X. Now, if you're going through Photoshop, save it out as a PSD or PNG, you'll be fine. And make sure the frame size matches the frame size of your FCP Project tilmeline. If it is smaller, and must be enlarged to fit the frame, it will pixelate. Can't enlarge digital images much without distroying them.

Drag & drop; image degradation; preview for web screen

Image degradation caused by rotation question

When I rotate an image from a horizontal to vertical orientation using iPhoto8 on my 24" Intel-based iMac, the image is reduced in size and loses sharpness. Is this loss in sharpness because the monitor is no longer displaying the image at a correct pixel ratio or is it a software problem like the lack of a lossless rotation routine in iPhoto?

I may be making some assumptions here but let me try and answer. Since the 24" iMac screen is almost twice as wide as it is tall, it stands to reason that when you rotate an image it will reduce in size. Or at least that will be the case if you were using a large portion of the wide screen to display the image horizontally in a landscape orientation. Anytime an image is reduced in size, it stands to reason that detail will suffer because fewer pixels are being used to render the image on the screen. Does that make sense or am I totally misunderstanding the question?

Why does the export quality of my vector image degrade when effects are applied?

I am unsure as to where I am going wrong...
Basically, I created a patterned background on AI and imported it straight into AE, where I set keyframes for it to rotate. I added fractal noise (got my desired effect).
On separate layers in the same composition I simulated ccParticle World, for which I created a shape layer to link to the texture - I added 'glow' to this. I also added another ccParticle World layer using 'faded sphere' to which I also added 'glow' and altered the opacity etc.
My compostion is HDTV 1080 25, square pixels.
I have Production Premium CS5.
I am trying to export the video as Windows Media: HDTV 1080p 25 HQ.
When I export the video in HD (using Media Encoder) the vector background from AI is slightly grainy and not smooth and the edges are almost pixelated. I have tried exporting the rotating background on its own without any other layers and it looks fine - it is just when I make the other layers visible. It looks perfect in AE too even with the layers visible: it is just when I export the whole composition.
H.264: 1080p & 720p HQ seem to work fine, but I really need the export to be WMV to be compatible with certain programs myself and clients are using.
I have got the continuously rasterize box checked.
Am I missing something?

Pages Image Quality Degrades When Dropped from Desktop or Inserted

I'm having a problem with image degradation when dropping an image from my desktop into Pages. Even though it's a large file, the quality and resolution is obviously reduced when it's dropped into Pages. I can view the file on Preview and in Pages side-by-side and see a dramatic difference.
I'm trying to keep the total file size of a Pages document smaller and more manageable. I'm a photographer too, so I'm familiar with the file size needed for proper resolution, but I'm just not seeing it come through in Pages.
Anyone else having a similar experience? Any ideas what could be wrong?

Not really surprising.
Pages works using a given resolution (I don't know which one).
When you display a picture from an other app, the res is not the same.
As Pages goal is to print documents, I may easily assume that to spare time, the algorhytm used to display on screen is not a high quality, keeping the high quality one to build the map to print.
