QT Movie or QT Reference File. Which is lossless?

Hi,
I have a project on a timeline that I want to export as lossless. It was shot and editied at 1440 x 1080i HDV.
Should I export it as a Quicktime File (Self Contained) or a QT Reference File?
Which will give me a Lossless file?
What settings should I use when I go to File ------ Export ------ Quicktime?
Current Settings?
Thanks in advance.
FCP 7
Mac Pro
Intel Xeon
10 GB RAM

Which will give me a Lossless file?
Neither. If the video was recorded in HDV, imported/captured as HDV, and edited as HDV, then the resulting QT file will also be HDV (unless you re-render it) which is not a "lossless" codec. A "standalone" file simply contains all data within your output file container. Instead, a "reference" file contains a combination of "pointers" to data that is contained in the raw captured file and rendered data created during your editing process. "References" file are much smaller and faster to write but require both the "reference" file and the "resource" file be available for use. (I.e., you cannot create a "reference" file and sent it to someone else as an independently playable file.)
If you are using the term "lossless" in the sense of "unmodified," then it makse no difference since the same data is "copied" or "resourced" to both types of file whether it is the raw source data or the rendered data created by your edits within the project.

  • Mov reference file will not open in QuickTime 7.7.4 for Windows

    Hi,
I have a mov reference file which opened fine in QuickTime 7.6.2 but since upgrading to 7.7.4 the file will no open. I get the following error:
Error -2002: a bad public movie atom was found in the movie.
The file contains one PAL MPEG2 video track and one stereo PCM audio track. It also contains a timecode track.
    See movie inspector below:
Can anyone help me understand why this file will not open with the latest version of QuickTime. I cannot supply the file but can give any information about atoms etc. which can be read using QTAtomViewer.
I am using Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008.
    Many thanks,
    Kate

For those who want to call, the following menu options will get you to the Quick Time install tech support:
2 - takes you to the Quick Time submenu
2 - takes you to tech support
then, choose 1 for Mac or 2 for windows
Initially, I was told by tier 1 tech rep Shawn that the update server may not be up or that it may be a firewall issue on my side.
After telling him that I have confirmed that it is a problem with the update server sending a NULL (0 byte) response to the update query, he said I would have to just download the latest one in order to have the most up-to-date version and "just check back periodically to see if the update server is working".
He mentioned there was a Quick Time standalone download available (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html), but that is still ~20MB & doesn't help the fact that probably over 90% of the people who run Quick Time have the option to automatically check for updates set and will never realize they're running an old, vulnerable version of Quick Time.
He gave me a case number after I asked for one: 58027568
If you'd like to add to mine and/or Rob's, it surely couldn't hurt.
I suppose my next course is to try emailing contacts at apple to see what kind of response they have. Considering this problem has been there ever since QT 7 for Windows has been released (I don't remember ever checking for updates when running QT 7 beta), it's strange that it's still a problem.

  • I can't reproduce correctly a reference file .mov in full screen in iTunes

Hi everybody. Today I have been trying to organize my film collection in iTunes. First, I read that the best way if I had the films in a hard drive was creating a reference file, called .mov. I tried different ways to create it, first with QuickTime 7 but finally I used iFlicks, which looked for information about the film automatically. This iFlicks, automatically puts the film in iTunes, everything perfect, but here comes the problem. When I reproduce the film via iTunes, it reproduces quite bad, and if I try to put it on full screen (what I always want), it appears only in the left corner, and the other part of the screen black.
I hope you can help me.
    P.D.: sorry for my English.

You might want to change your application setting for PDFs. Try here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Applications
Type pdf in the search box and pause while Firefox filters the list. You should get one or two lines. Is Foxit available? Is Adobe Reader available? Try a couple things if you can and see whether any of them work correctly.

Mov is a container format, you'd need to look at the codec used by the movie file inside the container to know whether it will work with the Apple TV or not.

I created project in iMovie then exported it to MP4 and also MOV file at highest definition possible + I added it to iDVD and had a number issues about encoding errors regarding the mp4 file. MOV worked but the quality was terrible.....
    MOV file is as follows:
    4.08GB
    Codecs: H.264, ACC
    Colour Profile: HD (1-1-1)
    Dimensions: 1920 x 1080
    Duration: 12:33
    Audio Channels: 2
    MP4 File is as follows:
    3.02GB
    Codecs: H.264, ACC
    Colour Profile: HD (1-1-1)
    Dimensions: 1280 x 720

First of all, Hunt--thanks for responding!
"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • Unit Tests VS 2013 - Manifest references file 'vstest.executionengine.appcontainer.exe' which is not part of the payload

I am working on a Windows 8.1 Store App and I created Unit Tests. Last week everything worked out fine, but since a few days I am not able to build my Unit-Test-Projects.
Every Unit-Test-Project has the following two errors:
Manifest references file 'vstest.executionengine.appcontainer.exe' which is not part of the payload. [PathToTest].Logic.Tests\Package.appxmanifest
Manifest references file 'vstest.executionengine.appcontainer.x86.exe' which is not part of the payload. [PathToTest].Logic.Tests\Package.appxmanifest
I already tried to re-install VS 2013 with no success.
    Any ideas?

  • How do I move a smart catalogue file from my Vista computer which has LR4 to my IMac which has LR Creative Cloud. Please explain in layman's terms!

How do I move a smart catalogue file from LR 4 on a Vista laptop to an IMac where I'm using LR CC? Please use layman's terms as I am new to the IMac.

You might think so. But it's difficult to decide what people mean. You understood the question, I didn't. If you copied the catalog and everything from the old computer to the new one and utilized the old catalog, the smart collections should still be in place. The old catalog would have to be converted to the new format, and you might have to relink missing images. But after that is all done the smart collections should be in place.

  • How to tell if a movie is a reference after the fact and components issue..

    Hello,
I am unsure if a quicktime movie I made is self-contained or a reference movie. It is not playing and I was told I need components to play it (though I am not sure which ones) .... but what got me thinking is I looked at the data size in the inspector window and it says 20 gb and the file size says 2 gb. Is there a way to know if it's a ref movie or self-contained?
This will solve my first question, and of course my next is how do I get it to play? What do I need to install? How do I know what components are needed? It was exported as a DVCPRO HD 720p60. I have quicktime Pro - I think it's version 7.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that the movie is self-contained...I am seeing (in the properties window, resources tab) the original movie pointing to one .mov file and ten .mov1-10 files underneath. Does that sound self-contained?
No, afraid not. When I said "the file will point to itself," I meant the resource will be the same as the open file's physical location on your hard drive. If it is pointing to other files with different names/locations or to a URL on the internet, then it is a reference file.
I don't have FCP on my system. Do you know what components for QT I need to install to playback the DVCPro HD movie? Is it possible to play such a file w/out having FCP?
Sorry my answer was so vague. QT Kirk has already "nailed" the answer for you. You have to install the FCP application. This application will install an entire set of encoding and decoding "DVCPROHD" components. Since your system does not have FCP installed, you should ask whoever provided these files to either transcode the files to AIC/AIFF for editing on a non-FCP system or export their FCP completed project to a common distribution/delivery format like H.264/AAC.

  • Can you export a Quick Time REFERENCE file from Final Cut Pro X?

Used to be in FCP-7, you could export your timeline and at the bottom of the Export dialog box, there was a check box where you could check "Make the movie self-contained," which would export a full Quick Time .mov file, or you could UNCHECK that box and FCP would export a Quick Time REFERENCE file (referencing the source media used within the timeline), which you could then bring in to any one of a number of different encoding apps.
I prefer to use Sorenson Squeeze to do my encoding, as it's much, much faster than Compressor and has infinitely more format options (Flash, Windows Media, Real, etc., etc.).
But now, I don't see a way to export a Quick Time Reference file from the Final Cut Pro timeline, er, uh, storyline, er, uh, project.
Anybody know if there's a way to export a Quick Time REFERENCE file (not a full Quick Time .mov)?

    R&B wrote:

I do the same thing with Final Cut Express, actually.  Only I then open the reference file up in QuickTime Pro and re-export it to an h.264 mp4.  I can do that multiple times in the background vs. getting caught up in Final Cut's pathetically non-threaded user interface when it's saving/exporting.
I was going to ask the exact same question here, but you beat me to it.  And so far it sounds like the answer is "no" ... :-(

  • QT Reference files from QT 6.5.2 won't open in QT 7.1

My QT Reference files created with Avid Xpress Pro 4.6, which used Quicktime 6.5.2, won't open in QT7.1. This is causing me a lot of headaches trying to compress/encode/etc. my older projects. In order to use the newer program to encode these files, I need QT7 (since these newer programs -- like Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 -- require QT7.) Since QT7 can't open these files, however, I am unable to use Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 to encode these these files.
Is there some "trick" to get my QT 6.5.2 QTRef files to work on a QT7.1 system? I thought that QT7 was supposed to be fully backwards compatible with older QT files, INCLUDING QTRef files.
Thanks for any help with this,
    Larry
      Windows XP Pro

What error message are you getting on these
"reference" movies when opened with QT 7?
No error message -- the QT screen is just white and the file doesn't play.
Are they (and the source files) on the same drive
that holds the QT Player app?
No. The QT Player is on C, but the QTRef and the sources for the reference file are not (I use dedicated video drives for that.) The drive letters ARE correct, however -- i.e. the sources are where the Ref file knows where to find them. It doesn't appear to be an issue where QT7 can't "find" the source files. It's an issue where it just can't open the file at ALL.
I got a response from Sorenson Media tech support that said that QTRef files from QT6.5.2 were not compatible with QT7.1. Is this really the case? Is there really no way of getting QT6.5.2 ref files to work with QT7.1? It seems rather shocking that QT7 would not be backwards compatible with QT6.5.2 Reference files.
    Thanks again,
    Larry

  • Changes in reference files

I have in iDVD project a movie which is exported from FCE as a reference file (not self contained).
In that FCE sequence, the audiotrack is mastered in other audio editor.
When I make polishing changes to this audio file (compression and EQ), it automatically updates itself in FCE. Which is nice.
How it is, when the project is exported as reference movie, and some changes are made in audio track, does the reference movie get updated as well, or should I export it again?

In the project where I needed it, the situation developed so that I could not make enough tests to be sure if it did work or not, and for now I became the owner of the DVD Studio Pro which means that the answer does not matter any more.
At least, to keep project simple and to be sure that DVD is as it should be, the re-exporting might be considered as more reliabe way of updating the project.

  • HELLLLP!! I was trying to save my completed project to an external hard drive and I did it improperly. (I just wanted the final edit, not any of the reference files...) So I deleted it...and I guess went to far. Now my project is missing!  Tips??

I duplicated it impropelry. I didn't want to duplicate all the reference files etc... I deleted it...and perhaps went too far in deleting other items. Now my project is gone from my timeline. Is there anything I can do to retrieve my work?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?
