QT Movie Player vs. iTunes

My downloaded TV shows look fine when viewing in iTunes ... Howerver, when I try to play them in the Movie Player (which I like to do, because I like the controls better), they have white artifacts all over the movie once it is enlarged 2x or 3x (full screen).
Can anyone tell me what causes this, and if it can be fixed. I'm pretty sure this started to happen after upgrading to QT 7.x

the TV shows I have downloaded from iTunes Music Store ... and they used to work FINE in QT Movie Player before vers 7.
Uh, no, they couldn't. The videos from the iTunes Music Store are all in protected h.264 format which can't play in versions of QuickTime prior to QuickTime 7.
If you haven't updated to QuickTime 7.1, you might give that a try, since among the problems is addresses is some issues with playback of h.264 content. If that doesn't help, if you have any third-party codecs installed (DivX, 3ivx, etc.) you might try removing them and see if that makes a difference.

None of my movies or Tv shows play on my iTunes player. The player starts and runs but there is no audio or video. The counter is counting like the movie is playing, but there is nothing there. Can anybody please help me? I am using a PC with windows 7.

This is what fixed it for me: I changed the native format it defaulted to when double-clicking the file, from Windows Media Player to iTunes.
So, I guess I would say to check that. When you go to the .m4v file and double-click it, what program does the file load in? If it doesn't load iTunes, or load In iTunes, then that could be your problem. At least that's what I found.
Instructions for Windows:
1. Right-click the video file -- it has an .m4v extension -- and select Properties
2. In the Properties dialog, near the top, where it says "Type of file:" and then "Opens with:", click the "Change" button.
3. In the "Open with" dialog that displays, select the iTunes icon and click "OK" (or click "Browse" and navigate to the iTunes.exe, if iTunes isn't in the list).
Result: That action changes all of your .m4vs to automatically load iTunes when you double-click. Once I did that, any movie I play from iTunes always plays.

I would like to play audio from movies in the MacBook DVD player using iTunes or Airplay? Is this possible?

Is it important that the music come from a video, or are you just looking to listen to music in the background, while doing something else. If the later, you can certainly play music from the Music App, Pandora, or iHeart Radio, etc., and with the music playing, tap your home button to go to your home page and open anything else you want and the music will continue.
I don't have any videos to try out right now, but you try the same thing out and if the music continues, it works. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

You should be able to download a codec that will allow Windows Media Player to play non-protected AAC files from the iTunes library. I believe this function is built in to WMP for Windows 7 and 8.

I start itunes movie player, i click to start movie and it freezes.

need help. i start i tunes movie player. the timer starts sometimes. no picture or sound. click anywhere on the screen and it locks up. i can transfer to my iphone or ipod and they work fine. i have gone thru the troubleshooting , and reinstalled itunes a few times.

Can I move only my iTunes movies, not my iTunes music, onto a flash drive? And, is there a program (apart from iTunes) that can play movies on MacBook Air?

I have a MacBook Air and I need to free up space...
1) I have three series of a tv show on my itunes which are taking up loads of memory - see image - I want to move these movie files onto a Flash Drive. However I do not want to move my itunes Music onto the flash drive, only my Movies, and want to keep my music on my hard drive.
Is this possible?
2) I have managed to copy the movie files onto the flash drive, however when I tried to play one to check that they were loaded properly it didn't have a program that could run the file (they have copied over in a m4V format). Do the MacBook Air's not have a separate program other than itunes that can play movies? If so, is there a program I can get to solve this problem? I went onto the App Store to see if there was something I could download, but all the apps were for creating DVD's, not simply playing them.
3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?

If you can play the movies in iTunes, you should be able to open the movie files using Quicktime, which should already be on your system. If you have already transferred the files to your flash drive, open the flash drive in Finder, and hold control when you click on the movie file (or right click if you have the enabled) and select Open With Quicktime Player. This should play the movie directly from the flash drive.

You can move the TV shows to your flash drive by dragging them from the iTunes window to your flash drive in Finder or the flash drive icon on the desktop. When you are sure everything is transferred over to your external device, you can delete the movie from iTunes. I recommend playing the videos from the flash drive first before deleting them in iTunes.
To delete the videos from iTunes, you can highlight them and press the delete key on your keyboard. In the next prompt, you would want to move it to the trash so that it is deleted from your internal hard drive.

Use the ATV sync settings in iTunes to set the shows you want to sync, then they will remain on the ATV hard disk until you remove them from your iTunes library. She will be able to watch the synced content even if your laptop is out of the house.

Can't add movies to my ITunes Library

I have spent the last hour attempting to add some movies to my ITunes library. These files are all in mp4 format.
I have never had trouble before today, but whether I try to add them to the library through the menu, or drag and drop, nothing happens.
I have the most recent ITunes software and am using a MacBook Pro with Lion.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Convert the movie to mp4 (even though it is already mp4) with MPEG Streamclip or Handbrake (both free programs).
Do you mean save the mp4 movie as mp4? Converting (vs. saving it) it just results in more quality loss as the streams are re-coded again.
HB only does full re-coding (I don't know about the newest version). Streamclip lets you save a mp4, basically repackaging the existing streams without recoding. Mind you, those streams still have to be something iTunes finds acceptable. iTunes isn't really designed as a comprehensive video player since its video capabilities evolved at the same time Apple started selling movies, so it's up to the reader to figure out where the development priorities lay.

Using DVD player or Itunes with lid shut

Is it possible to to use the dvd player or itunes with the lid shut? When I hook the computer up to my tv to watch a movie I would prefer to close the lid. But when I close the lid the system goes to sleep and the player stops.

Turn up the monitor brightness.
If these are not iTunes Store movies you could try viewing them in a player such as VLC which I believe offers video adjustment features in one of the many options.

Can hear audio but get no video in QT player or iTunes or Safari

I can hear audio, but get no video (ie just a blank window or the "first frame" of the video) when playing basic ".mov" movies using QT Player. I also get the same behaviour when trying to watch movie previews in iTunes. I get the same behaviour when trying to watch QT movies in Safari (for example the latest apple advertisements from apple.com), although ironically I was able to watch the entire Macworld keynote without a hitch in QT Player?!?!
I know my mac is now "getting on", but I know it is still capable of displaying "ipod" sized movie trailers in iTunes.
Real player, cameraid, graphic converter and btv pro can all play the movies QT Player cant. Firefox can play the movies that Safari cant play. Unfortunately there isnt an alternative for iTunes.
Can anyone give any reason or solution to the fact that the core Apple applications are unable to play Apples own movie format when out of date, 5 year old, 3rd party software can?
I have tried
1) deleting the QT plist files
2) reinstalling flip4mac, perian, realplayer and flash, and
3) have just updated QT an iTunes to the latest version.
Any ideas?
The only hint I can think of, is that when playing a movie in QT Player, if you minimise the movie to the dock, and then bring it back to the desktop....it displays the "current" frame of the movie which sits there "frozen" until you do it again ... and just repeating, audio is fine.

Yes Techmo, persistence is the secret.
After the QT 6.4.5 update once again made no difference, I gave up with a brand spanking new 2.8Ghz iMac only a couple of days away.
On cleaning out the old mac getting ready to transfer files to the new mac, I unplugged everything but (of course) power, keyboard and mouse.
I dont know why, but I tried a movie...and it worked like a charm.
I dont know what was plugged in that was giving QT grief, but I suspect it may have been my ageing Orange Micro iBot webcam. Too late now to find out (and I no longer care as I gaze on my new 24 inches of beautiful screen real estate), but for all those with this problem....try unplugging everything as I did and see what happens. At least it might be a starting point to solving your problem.
Strange it only affected Apples own applications though???

Random movie player?

I need a movie player which will play movies randomly. On a basic level, this is similar to the “Shuffle” function on iTunes. Or, in screensaver, where you can choose a folder containing still images to be played in random order, with a few parameters (like transition, fit to screen, etc).
The application for me is for a project I am working on made up of, eventually, hundreds of movies (of a particular place, event or person). These are HD (Apple ProRes) 1080p 24fps movies. They have no sound. They can all be grouped in one folder, say. I tell the movie player to play the movies continuously, in random order, from this folder, simple as that. They can be simple cut transitions, so there does not have to be any rendering, but the cuts must be smooth (ie, no jumps or black spaces inbetween).
Anybody know of anything like this out there?

You might explore digital video disc jockey applications. I know of no way to tell any application like QT Player to pick random movies. That requires some scripting to generate a random number and to then use that number to select an item from a folder and then to push play and then to wait for the movie to end before running the script again.
But... You might open up the documentation for Automator and see if it can be done in QT Player. Someone may have already written a shuffle script.
