QT Plugin 7.1.5 can't play local files

I have several webpages that use the embedded quicktime plugin to play movies on the page. These movies are large so they are downloaded to the local machine in advance where the plugin plays them from the local file. This has worked fine until upgrading to the QT Plugin version 7.1.5. With the new version, if I try and play the movie from a local file, the movie wont play, instead I get the quicktime logo with a question mark. I can play the movie just fine from the full quicktime install, or if I use the plugin to stream the video from a url off the server, instead of the local hard drive. This problem exists when viewing the webpage in Internet Explorer 6, I have not tried IE 7 or Firefox yet.
Is there a parameter within the QT Plugin, or within the browser that I need to set to allow playing a local file from a html page served by a remote server, or is this a case where tightened security is going to kill me? Thanks for any suggestions.

The link above is a QuickTime Media Link file. Simple text based URL that will download a very tiny file to the viewers computer (Mac or PC).
It will launch the QuickTIme Player app (bypassing the browser plug-in).
You could use the QuickTime files already on your server (and already being downloaded) as the "source" in the Media Link file so there is no increase in your bandwidth load. Viewers can also load your file (from cache) by clicking on the .qtl file again saving you some bandwidth.

Dmp 4400 can't play local files

I am using a DMP-4400 with firmware v.5.2.2. The unit connects to the network fine and is able to display webpages from the internet without problem; the ftp server is working fine also. However, when I attempt to play any type of local file ( located at /tmp/ftproot/usb_1/) the screen remains blank. I am assuming that the files are being found because the failover URL is not being displayed for either .mpg or .html files. I am using MPEG-1 type video files for testing. I have attached one of these videos along with a sample .html file I am planning to use to loop multiple files.
Video files are being run using:
"/tmp/ftproot/usb_1/melt.mpg" entered into the 'Local Storage Path' dialog under 'Play Video File Stored Locally' within the GUI.
HTML is being launched using:
"file:///tmp/ftproot/usb_1/play-local-mpg.html" entered into the 'URL' dialog under 'URL To Be Displayed' within the GUI.
These problems persist whether the files are located on internal memory or external USB drive. Any help will be much appreciated.

I was able to fix it, The issue seems to be with the content, I transcoded it with VLC Player to MPEG-TS and it works. Kindly find the attached transcoded file.

Cant play local files on mobile

Posting again and hoping for a response before I have to cancel Premium because of it. Hello, I have a Droid Razr M, and I can't play my local files on my Android phone. I have premium, and when I download a playlist/songs to my phone, they come up as (Song Name) Unknown Artist, Unknown Album, and completely grey instead of white with the Dowload Icon next to them. My Phone and my Desktop Spotify are sync'd and I switch between them often.
I used to have success transferring files when working off my Macbook Air to my phone, but no such luck with my HP desktop. I do not have the Macbook anymore so it isn't a solution to this problem. I have connected my phone to my PC yet it does nothing within the Spotify window. When I'm playing a local file on the PC and I try to switch to mobile using connect, it just black screens and I have to back arrow out of that to get back to my playlist, where it resumes fine playing no song. This was not a problem a couple patches ago, yet it may make me unsubscribe because it is my most essential value to my Spotify experience. I will provide more information to solve the problem, if necessary

Yeh it won't sync local files under the latest version of Android.
It's not that it doesnt actually sync it, but on the phone on android. There is no option for local files.
It doesn't come up. Tho it is on the computer Spotify app.
The only way to do it, is to make a playlist. Drag everything from local files into the playlist. Then sync.
You can even click offline mode for what its worth. Obviously its already on the computer as its local files.
It seems files that are not on Spotify are faded out. It is very inconsistent about it. But none the less you can play everything.
Once you have it all on your new shiny playlist. Sync it to the phone. And just sync that playlist which just has local files.
There is no way to work out the bitrate of the files on the spotify app for Andoid, so I can see the kbps. So I know if it is a local version or what the sound quality is either. Anyway you can sync local files only through making a playlist.
The problem lies in the Spotify app. It has the option to click sync local files. And it actually does it, but this is useless as there is no way to search or play these files unless they are in a playlist on the latest Android App. And because it isn't in a playlist you cannot play it.
So yeh Make playlist. Copy Local Files into Playlist. Sync Android Phone with that Playlist. You can now play local files.

*1st of all*: Dont pay attention to QuickTime, no matter what movie you want to view
just download and install VLC Media Player and your worries about formats, video codecs, audio codecs, multi zone dvd reproduction will be over in a sec!
just "open as" > VLC Media Player and you will see everything and if you have a subtitle file, just drag it into the movie

Did you bounce at 44.1kHz, 16 bit? AIFF or AAC or MP3 should be fine for iTunes, but sample rate and bit depth is important.

Just take a look at the last few days posts here and you'll see many people with the same problem and some possible solutions.
But you should never do any software updates unless you have a bootable backup of your startup drive. FCP7 is no longer being supported by apple and updating anything is fraught with dangers.

Can't play .mov files in Xine

I am pretty new to Arch but it is great so far. I am running vanilla KDE4 with Xine as the Phonon backend. One problem I'm having is that I can't play .mov files. Other stuff like .wmv and .avi play ok. I also have the codecs package installed.

Welcome to the forums DeKay.
This isn't going to help, but I can confirm this using Xine 1.2 (dev) and almost a pure FFmpeg backend. ffplay and Mplayer can both play this file properly, so it's without a doubt a Xine problem. I ran a gdb trace on it and didn't really get anything to report upstream either.

HT3775 can't play wmv file on quicktime?

I can't play .wmv files on quicktime. I installed both QuickTime MPEG2 and Flip4Mac WMV hoping that this would solve the problem but it did not. When trying to play any audio .wmv file I get an error box stating "the document (filename).wmv could not be opened. The movie is not in a format the QuickTime Player understands. You may need to install additional software to open this type of file". Anyone know what I might need here?

Hmm, Perian should provide flv playback in Quicktime. Maybe you need to update Perian? I used to always use Perian but since upgrading to Lion I have not installed it and now rely on VLC for non-apple standard media playback. Deluxe can handle the flv-format.It will convert flv to mov. Hope it helps

I had heard that MIDI worked in Lion, but don't currently have it to test.
There's a somewhat involved way to get it working described here, or you may be able to download the files & play them locally.

HT4072 can't play video files (mp4, avi, mkv) with 5.1 audio tracks

I have two Macs, one with a mini-optical out and no audio through its mini-displayport, and the other that supports digital audio out through its mini-displayport. On either of my Macs, how can I play video files (mp4, avi, mkv) in 5.1 using Quicktime or iTunes or VLC? I've heard I need Perian. Is this true? If so, how do I configure it on either machine?
Note that when I connect the computer that supports audio through the mini-displayport to my receiver, my home theater receiver detects a PCM audio connection, but the audio I get out of my speakers is still stereo.
Both computers are running Snow Leopard. I haven't had the need to upgrade to Lion yet, but if the answer is that I need Lion do do this, I'd spend the $29.

that's because now mplayer they switch to libavformat demuxer for mkv and ogg and i think is a bug in smplayer because is making some configuration for files in file_settings in which is sets demuxer & co. this switch is confusing smplayer and it should be reported upstream
p.s if you actually select demuxer from smplayer to mkv it would work perfectly

Itunes can't play the file because the original file can not be found

There is many things wrong with that message and I don't know why.
I had around 30 songs off an album on my computer
I put the album on Itunes
I edited them and then they played fine
I put them on my ipod and then deleted them off coz i wanted to put something else on
but i found out I had more space to put the other 30 songs I had from before back on so I went to the album
when I wanted to play a song it said "Itunes Can't play the file because the original file can not be found"
1) The original file was on my computer, in the exact place where I left it last time when Itunes played it
2) I did not change the file path name
3) I did not change the folder path name
4) The songs aren't corrupted
5) They play fine on other programs
I deleted them all off and took them on again and they played fine but whey did they keep stuffing up before?

The "missing file" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then say no when asked to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. I can provide a step by step guide if you give me the two paths.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps and locate the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links. Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

The referenced article is quite explicit. Nothing has changed since its 2010 posting. Either codecs are supported or they arenot supported. If not supported, then the proper codec(s) must be installed IF AVAILABLE to support the data in the AVI file container. In some cases, depending on which QT player app you are trying to use, the data may not be supported in the AVI file container but may be supported in an MOV, TS, MPG, or MPEG file container. Thay is why you need to follow the instructions and determine which specific compression formats were used to create the file. AVI is a "legacy" file container that has not been officially supported by Microsoft for more than a decade. If you do not want to determine the specific problem preventing your viewing of the file and fix it, then download a third-party player like VLC that employs its own internal FFmpeg codec support and does not rely on your Apple's system configuration for palyback or use a converter app like Handbrake that has presets that will convert the AVI file to QT compatible compression formats in QT compatible file containers and suffer some possible loss in video quality.
