QT Pro nor iSquint will export using both CPUs - MacBook Pro

Hello!
I've got a few videos (of various codecs) that I want to export for my iPod, at the high-res 640x480 level. Because I want more control over export settings than iTunes gives, I usually export with Quicktime Pro, or sometimes iSquint, depending on the quality I want and the codecs used.
Exporting takes a lot of time - as it does on any computer. Unfortunately, both Quicktime and iSquint seem to refuse to export using both CPU cores in my 2.2 Ghz MacBook Pro. They both suck down the entire power of one core, but the other sits idle. This greatly increases the export time, which is annoying when I've got a lot of videos to convert.
Oddly enough, when I tried exporting said source movies to a DVD via iDVD, it used both cores. In other words, QT is actually capable of using 2 cores to export videos in iDVD, but not via QT Pro itself - very very odd.
Is this a "feature" of the program - that is, QT Pro does not support dual-core encoding except through other programs - or some bug? Since iSquint does the same thing, I'm fairly sure the problem does not actually lie with Quicktime as iSquint uses the FFmpeg codecs to convert videos.
Any ideas what the problem is, and how to work around it? If it's a bug in the software, I can reinstall said application.

The "grey curtain" indicates a kernal panic. KPs are usually the result of hardware based problems or unrecoverable software issues that are system wide. I say system wide because OSX is designed to contain a balky program and will allow you to kill the program without affecting the OS.
Unplug all external devices except the keyboard and mouse and try it.
Does it work reliably?
• If so, start connecting your externals one by one until you find the one that causes issues.
• if not, you can try a full erase and reinstall of the software and OS. This may help.
If not, it is likely that you have a hardware issue that will need to be addressed by a certified repair technician.
good luck.

  • Will frequent use of my Macbook Pro diminish battery capacity?

    I just got my MacBook Pro a few days ago and use it on a regular basis - I charge it to nearly 100%, use it until it goes from 5-15%, and then I plug it into the wall while using it again until it's up to nearly 100% again.  Is this bad?  Will it wear down my battery's capacity?

    Allow the battery to drain as least as possible.
    2 years, only 14 cycles (mostly by accident or power goes off) and 98% charge on my machine here.
    I've heard of people with 3 months, hundreds of cycles and only charges to like 87% or so now.
    If you really want the machine to last, avoid using the keyboard and trackpad, use that thin plastic packaging and cover up the keyboard area with it.
    Prevents dirt and liquid spills from getting inside the machine, don't tape it tight, allow the air to get underneath to get inside the machine.
    Use external devices instead and the ports and optical drive as little as possible.
    Avoid 3D gaming or other uses where a lot of duxt can get inhaled into the machine, there are cooling fins that get clogged and actually need to be cleanned annually but Apple doesn't tell anyone, just lets their machines overheat and die in three years.
    It's that or they make a newer OS X version that won't run on your older machine.

  • Application running on both cpus under Linux

    Hi there,
    I'm using Zynq + PetaLinux that is supposed to use both cpus by default, and I can see that calling the top command. However, when I launch an APP it's just run in one CPU.
    We have an APP with 2 threads:
    (1) Reads from BRAM in PL (using mmap) and store bytes in main memory.
    (2) If there's new data read from bram, send it to PC using Ethernet.
    In order to execute each thread in different CPUs, I use the following snippet in each thread (where core_id=0 for thread1 and core_id=1 for thread2):
            int core_id = 0;
            cpu_set_t cpuset;
            CPU_ZERO(&cpuset);
            CPU_SET(core_id, &cpuset);
            pthread_t current_thread = pthread_self();
            pthread_setaffinity_np(current_thread, sizeof(cpu_set_t), &cpuset);
    The performance does, in fact, get better with this code, but shouldn't I be able to find both cpus being used calling top command or somewhere else? Because it just shows that cpu0 is being used.
    Thank you,
    Leroy.

    Hi Leroy,
    Interesting, you've actually got a slightly newer version of busybox that I am using. Looking at the more recent source code, it appears that threads option has been made configurable. Evidently your version was compiled without this feature.
    I was going to suggest trying "ps -T" instead, but it looks like that command also has configurable thread reporting now... and most likely that will be switched off too.
    I would suggest compiling your own busybox (even if you only use it for "top"). Or you could also compile the real "top" command from the procps (or procps-ng) package.
    If you want something quick, you can look directly in /proc filesystem. Specifically, you can do "cat /proc/PID/status" where PID is the process ID of your task. The "status" file contains a field called "Threads" that tells you how many threads there are. If you want more details on each of the threads, use "ls /proc/PID/task" to get a list of the process ID of each of the threads. Then for each thread, you can consult it's /proc/PID/... fields (for details see http://linux.die.net/man/5/proc).

  • How do I take 300 dpi photos with my iPhone 4s? And how do I export them to my MacBook Pro at 300 dpi to use as I want to print photos.

    How do I take 300 dpi photos with my iPhone 4s?
    And how do I export them to my MacBook Pro at 300 dpi to use as I want to print photos.
    I have been using the standard camera on the iPhone and require 300 dpi to create photo books as the photos are resized according the layout.
    Your time and assistance in appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Tonefox!
    After looking at a few of the links I found a mathematical equation that assisted me.
    Inches = Pixels/DPI
    eg: 3 inches = 300 pixels/100 DPI
    Using this equation and the fact that iPhone 4s takes photos that are 3264 x 2448 I was able to work out the largest print I could make with 300 DPI.
    Width 3264 pix/ 300 DPI = 10.88 inches
    Height 2448 pix/ 300 DPI = 8.16 inches
    Therefore, the largest print (with 300DPI) I can make of these photos is 10.88 inches x 8.16 inches.
    Which is great!
    So is it critical for me to change the dpi in say photoshop or does it not matter as long as I don't go above the 10.88 inches x 8.16 inches?
    From what I can gather the smaller I resize the photo the higher the DPI and the bigger I stretch the photo the lower the DPI?
    Further clarification will be much appreciated. Thanks

  • 2 thunderbolt displays worked fine daisy chained, moved one to work in other room, now only one will work.  both work independantly or both plugged into my macbook pro.

    I have 2 thunderbolt displays and have had them daisy chained for months where I only would plug one into my macbook pro 15" retina and both displays have worked great.  The other day I moved one of them into the conference room, connected also a HDMI cord to a projector to do some work with staff on software design.
    I brought my thunderbolt back into my office and plugged it back into the other thunderbolt dispay, then plugged the other display back into my macbook and started it up and now I can only get one to work daisy chained.  They both work great independantly or if both of them are plugged into my macbook pro, but not daisy chained any longer.
    Is there a setting I need to look at to maybe reset so that my macbook pro will use both thunderbolt displays daisy chained?
    Thanks for anyones advice and sharing any similar issues and how you fixed the issue.

    Hi there,
    The first thing that I would recomend is resetting the PRAM on your portable.
    OS X Mountain Lion: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph11243
    If the issues persist, then you may need to force the device to detect displays.
    OS X Mountain Lion: About the Display pane of System Preferences
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5369
    How can I detect displays?
    If the detect displays option is not available, hold down the Option key while you are in the Display pane.

  • HP Laserjet Pro 400 Printer unable to print docs using both letter and legal paper

    HELP!!  Have been using an HP Laserjet Pro 400 M425dn dual tray printer for 2 years, along with a Dell laptop.  Always had ability to send documents to print using both letter and legal size paper.  Under print set-up on laptop, the option checked was always set to "Choose Paper Source by PDF Paper Size".  Now I've just purchased an HP Envy All-in-One Desktop, which does not offer that option under Print Set-Up.  While it allows for 'Auto Selection' of paper size, you are required to choose either letter or legal size paper.  I've called tech support 3 times, the latest call earlier this am, only to be disconnected.  Yesterday I was told that I should go on hp/support and update drivers.  My husband downloaded drivers, but still no fix.  Unless this issue is resolved asap, I will have no option but to return this Envy Desktop, as I cannot run my business without this option.
    Anyone have a similar problem?  How was it resolved?

    The available options will (probably) be determined by the printer driver in use.
    This , in turn, will be determined partly by which Operating System and version you are using.
    Once a printer model has been out in the field for some time (generally when the next generation (or two?) of devices has been announced to supersede it) that model becomes a 'legacy' device, and 'full-specification' printer drivers may no longer be supplied by the printer manufacturer, but basic (i.e. without too many options) drivers will (probably) instead be supplied with the operating system.

  • Need a RAID that will work on both new and old Mac Pro

    Desperately need to expand my RAID storage, and also not quite ready to buy the new Mac Pro.   Are there any high quality 6TB+ RAID enclosures that will work on both the new and older non-firebolt Mac Pros?  I already have a sh*t load of 2TB 3.5 drives, so I only need an enclosure.
    Even when i get the new macpro, I will use the old mac pro as a second station, so i need the RAID to work on both.

    Why not go for a eSATA Raid and a cheap eSATA card for old Mac Pro  and get either a Thunderbolt to eSATA or USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter for your new Mac Pro? Thunderbolt to eSATA is faster, of course.
    I have a MacPower/Inxtron Hydra 4 x 2 TB eSata for example. I have a eSATA card in my Mac Pro and when I need to use it on my Retina Macbook Pro I use a USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter. Gives me about 240 MBytes/s with Raid 5.
    On the eSATAcard it's just a little bit more, like 250/260 MBytes/s.

    I have adobe export on my desk top at office but can't get it to work on my laptop at home - can I use both places or do I need another subscription?

    Hi silverbird,
    Your subscription allows you to use ExportPDF from a supported web browser on any device--you don't need a separate subscription for separate devices. When you say you can't get it to work on your laptop--do you mean you're unable to log in? Do you get a particular error message? Please let me know what's happening on your laptop, and we will take it from there.

  • Using both the display ports on the new mac book pro

    Hi, are there some one in Appel that can tell me if its possible to use both the display ports on the new mac book pro to show keynote on? or if its possible to make that possible? i would really like to be able to create a keynote with 5120 x 1600 pixels and get that output on two display ports, so that i can use my hardware to make a keynote with really nice reselution. its for use on a screen size of 18x4 meter.

    Connect one display to the Mini-Displayport and the other to a USB port using an adapter like this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/VIDU2DVIA/
    Or buy a Matrox DualHead2Go DP Edition external video box and connect both displays to that, which in turn connects to the Mini-Displayport on the computer.
    There are limitations either way. A USB-connected display will be less responsive than one connected to the MDP, because USB 2 is slow. To use two displays with the Matrox box, I believe the displays must be identical. Read and understand all the caveats about each alternative before making a decision about which way to go.

    Will my whole itunes library be transferred to my new computer with home sharing,in other words will I be able to use bothe computers at the same time ? And will I have two copies of my all my playlists?

    Hi there J1750oe,
    You may find the information in the article below helpful.
    iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
    Transferring playlists
    If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
    Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library > Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.

  • How do i use both ssd and hdd drives on macbook pro together

    have a mid 2012 macbook pro 15 inch. I replaced hdd drive with ssd drive and put hdd drive in optic bay. Was wondering what the best way to use both together is

    Use your SSD for your system, applications, working projects, as a scratch disk (if you're editing photos or video, for example) and you can use the HD to store you user files (Documents) and infrequently accessed files.
    The only disadvantage that I see with a setup like yours is backups. You can use clones to backup both drives, and Time Machine to - at least - backup your boot drive, but you're going to run the risk of losing data if you don't clone your HD. That's a minimum of two clones for one computer (I shouldn't be one to be talking about excessive clones, though, as I keep three clones of my SSD, one clone of my 2TB 'working' drive, and two Time Machine backups of my SSD).
    But that's the way I'd treat the drive in the opti-bay - just as an 'internal' external drive.

    I just purchased a MacBookPro after having a MacBook.  I have ILife, IWorks and Office for Mac.  How do I get those programs on to my MacBook Pro?  I will still use my MacBook at work so I need those programs to remain on it as well.

    You need a Firewire cable to run between the two Macs.  Using Utility>Migration Assistant running on your new MacBook Pro, transfer what you want (with all the preferences and such) from your MacBook to your MBP.  Here's more info from Apple.
    You might have an issue with the Serial number for Office, but hopefully you have that around.
    Hope this helps.
