QT Pro, worth it?

I am having trouble with iMovie&my digital camera. My camera imports videos as .avi files. I have tried changing this but I can't anywhere. iMovie doesn't accept .avi files (however on certain occasions it works no problem, strange). Anyway, I have heard QTPro will allow me to convert the files-- It if worth the thirty for me if this is the case but can anyone answer my question: Will I be able to convert my .avi files to .mpeg/.mov files to suit iMovie?

Will I be able to convert my .avi files to .mpeg/.mov files to suit iMovie?
If you can read/play an .avi movie correctly with the QT Player then you should be able to convert it to another QT compatible format using the Pro authorization. Your primary problem is that .avi (like .mov) is a file format which can contian many combinations of different audio/video compression formats. In a nutshell, QT is "frame-to-frame synchronized" media player. Unfortunately, .avi frequently employs "muxed" audio and video which utilize sequential blocks of audio data interspersed with blocks of video data to maintain synchronization and/or proprietary compression formats not available for free use in the QT Tools package. Such formats require a third-party component be installed in QT to assist in the play and/or conversion of these compressed formats. Player components are freqently free. However, there is a growing trend for the conversion codecs to be marketed commercially -- i.e., they are no loner being distributed free. As Ryan mentioned, since there are so many .avi compression formats being used out there, it may be necessary to install quite a number of components to "cover" them all. My recommendation would be to install some of the most common free components (DivX, 3ivX, Flip4Mac, etc) and see which are able to play the particular formats which are giving you problems. If one allows you to properly play your files, then you might want to consider the purcharse of the associated bi-directional codec if required. (I.e., DivX v6 player is free but full codec must be purchased whereas the free DivX v5.1.1 is bi-directional and can handle mp3/layer-3 audio clips if that happens to be your particular "problem" format.

  • Is the Mac Book Pro worth the purchase?

    Hey there,
I have a G4 Titanium laptop, and the LCD is starting to fritz. I'm going to get it repaired, but I'm also considering just chucking it and buying a new machine. What do you recommend?
Is the Mac Book Pro worth the purchase?
I just went and looked at the 15" mac book pro at CompUsa, and the machine was so hot around the trackpad area I was shocked. That was a bit of a turnoff for me.
Should I just get the smaller Mac Book? (altho, I hate the shiny screen.)
Is it best to just wait until January and hope for some better machines??
    Help!!!
    Thanks!

I agree with Brody. Rumor sites have been proven wrong, very wrong in teh past, often. What hapepned to that ipod video that was supsoed ot be otu on teh 30th aniversary, abd before that at soemthign else, then at wwdc? OH yea, it didnt show up, at all
Also as for his 'price comparison' thing it is the same with all machines. The Pro has better video (much better.. though could be better), a better display amonth other small features. It is roughly 800$ more. Now, compare a dell nspiron E1705 - code du0 2.0ghz, 100gb, 1gb, integrated intel graphic chipset, 17" priced at $1499 to a XPS M1710 - codeduo 2,.0ghz, 1gb, 100gb, 17uxga+ display and 512 7900gtx at $2915. Non-integrated graphics, and a good chipset though the 7900gtx does destroy the punny junky x1600 (so take off say 400$ to be more fair) the price diffrence is roughly the same when teh better display si thrown in as to apples 12 vs 15 with higher res and better viewing angle. A decent video chipset for laptops are way more then a regular video card when changing it, displays also don't come cheap.
If you need the power of the mbp for say motion or more professional use on the road (try using a 12 for professional graphic dev or other fields it is more then annoying... i used a ibook prior ot my pb and couldnt do it, i returned it wiht in 2 weeks), powering a better diaplay and whatbe it else i'd suggest getting one. if you do not need it and can live with teh 12" get the macbook.
In the end it is yoru choice, but as we've said don't go by rumors of if or when better cpu will come out as technology advances rapidly unfortunatly, espcilly when there is no officialo word as to if they will go to it.
best of luck on yoru choice!

  • Is a mac pro worth the repairs?

I inherited a mac pro from 2007. I took it in too an apple store recently because it would kernel panic after 15 minutes. It will cost me 700 plus to have the logicboard replaced. Is the Mac pro Dual/Core Intel Xeon worth the replacement or am I better off getting a new one? Will Apple continue to make the Creative Suites and Final Cut programs operable for this old of a computer?

    Two years isn't old.
Panics can be caused by a number of things and unlikely the logicboard.
Was it doing this before shipped or before you inherited?

Memory, RAM, Riser, are a good place to start looking.
3rd party devices, cables, USB expansion cable (even Apple's)
Try a fresh install on clean drive.
If it has an Nvidia 8800GT, it requires 10.5.2 or later (10.5.5+ recommended).
New RAM, hard drive, Alsoft Disk Warrior, 10.5.6 DVD or Snow Leopard.
Oh, and some PCI Express controllers may not be compatible with 10.6.2, another reason to strip it down while ruling out cause.
PS: This is the sub-section for 2009, there is another section for Pre-2009 (no biggie, and I wish there was a section for 2008 as well, too).
For about $2200 you can pick up Apple Store Special (ref'd)

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro - worth bothering with?

    Hi,
Someone in my building threw out an early 2008 Mac Pro with no hard drives.
I put in a spare that I have lying around and it seems ok -- but a bit slow. I'm now in the process of installing Mavericks on it.
I'm curious if this computer is worth bothering with? If so, what are some essential upgrades that would make this hum? I'm assuming an SSD? Should I bother finding extra ram for it (it has 4gb now).
What would be some good uses -- I already have an apple tv and a htpc in the living room.. I suppose I can use it in the bedroom? Can this be a functioning secondary computer for my wife who doesn't game but does use iPhoto/Word/Netflix etc? And if so what should I add?
    Thanks everyone for your help!

If my wife just watches netflix/browser/word etc --- no games -- but does do a heavy bit of photo editing -- should I upgrade the gpus?
And if so, what would everyone recommend?
Also, I need to buy some hard drive caddies (only one left in it) -- however, I need a converter to put in a ssd right (as they are 2.5")? Any recommendations on those?
I have been able to find Mac Pro drive caddies on eBay. Here's one that would get you a set of 4:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Mac-Pro-Hard-Drive-Sled-Caddy-Complete-Set-1-4-Mac -Pro-2006-2008-/111386524693?pt=US_Drive_Bay_Caddies&hash=item19ef277c15. The screws appear to all be there.
In terms of adapters, this one was in my 2006 Mac Pro when I got it, and it seemed to work fine, although I didn't keep it in there very long:
    http://www.amazon.com/Icy-Dock-EZConvert-2-5-Inch-Converter/dp/B002Z2QDNE
OWC sells a couple of 2.5" drive adapters also.
I wouldn't worry about upgrading the graphics until your wife has had a chance to do some photo editing on it. You may not need to upgrade the card for a while, if ever.

  • Is Quicktime Pro worth the money?

Like my subject says, I am considering purchasing the serial to upgrade to Quicktime Pro 7 and just wondering if it is actually worth the money or if the normal Quicktime is good enough?
    thanks

The Pro upgrade allows you to create content (start to finish) using QuickTime.
Things like image sequence imports (think claymation), adding images and audio to video, converting file formats (iPod come to mind) and dozens of other uses.
Nearly all of my "movies" are made using QuickTIme Pro and I've been a user (and buyer since version 3 was the first time they charged extra for it) for many years.
Take a few minutes trying some of my video links:

  • Is a Macbook Pro worth the money?

Hi, I am going to get a MBP by the end of this year and I want 1 TB but I see for the retina display models there is no option... I have an iMac and would be interested in a Macbook Pro

Correct, the retina display models do not have a HD they have flash storage. Read the specifications http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/
As to whether or not the Macbook pro is worth the money, I guess only you can decide. I like mine.

  • Is TechTools Pro worth the $$$

    Hi,
I was just wondeing if anyone here has used TechTools Pro and if they felt it was a good utility to have and worth the $$$?

First would be extra drive and Disk Warrior 4 which are essential. I can't say that I've needed TTP4 in all the years of use and buying etc. though. Intech SpeedTools has some goodies that no one else seems to have though. And then a good backup program.

  • Is DivX Pro worth it?

I recently solved an issue I had with playing back '.avi' movies on iMac G5 by installing the latest free version od DivX (ver. 6.5) to my computer. I see that they have a 'Pro' version of their codec. What are the benefits of upgrading? Is it worth the cost? Do I really need to upgrade for any reason?

Viewing these DivX files will probably always remain free. Creating DivX files is what costs the money.
If you don't need to create a DivX DVD file there is no advantage to the upgrade.
My impressions of DivX is that it could have been the missing link between the MPEG-2 format of current DVD's and the next generation (think HD).
Almost any ($35) DVD player can replay DivX encoded files. Pop it in your DVD player to test.
Where MPEG-2 (MPEG stands for Motion Pictures Expert Group) has "standards" these DivX formats are a mismatch of formats and codecs and playback is nearly always an issue.
BTW, MPEG-4 has been available for a few years. Apple supports some of these export options and Microsoft has written there "own" .mp4 specs and codecs. Another mixed bag of results and confusion to end users.
    To help clear the air:
DivX files "should" play in a modern DVD Player. It should play on your TV just like it does on your computer via the cables.
But most DivX files are actually viewed on a computer and the format has been abused by software and licensing fees that most creators don't pay for.
I guess I should have kept it simple.
Newer technology will replace DivX. Newer formats for DVD are starting to appear on the market.
DivX is a "codec install" that wanted to be a file format.
    I think they've failed but, that's just my 2¢.

  • Is this MacBook Pro worth fixing?

    Hello all:
I have a MacBook Intel Pro Dual Core laptop in a bit of a sorry state. The baby barfed over the keyboard, and so I tried to remove it to clean it... and now the keys won't go back on. Also the thing has been dropped a dozen times or more and the chassis is bent (which is probably why the keys won't fit back on). Also, as the chassis is bent I can't get a CD/DVD into the drive. Also, according to a diagnostic test a volume needs rebuilding.
Is this computer worth fixing? It would need a new keyboard, some internal jiggery-pokery (to fix the volume issues) and the chassis straightening.
Does anyone know what this is likely to cost? I live some distance from the nearest Mac Store so I'm trying to find out a ballpark amount before I take the trip.
Thanks for any info or thoughts.

    Adrian:
You do not say just which MacBook Pro you have, but you can likely return it to usable condition for under $100, if the liquid did not get beyond the keyboard. I don't know about the bent chassis, but if it were not affecting the computer's functionality prior to the baby using the keyboard inappropriately, the computer should function just as well as before that accident. In terms of the optical drive it is difficult to say just what the issue might be there. It may have been damaged in one of the falls the computer sustained. You can pick up a keyboard/upper case on eBay for less than $50 and install it yourself with step by step directions from iFixit.
In the case of the volume needing rebuilding that is a directory issue which, if it can't be repaired by Disk Utility, can be repaired by a third party utility like Tech Tool Pro, DriveGenius or Disk Warrior. If you are not in a position to invest in one of those at the moment you can backup any data you wish to save and do a complete reformat, erase and reinstall. In other words, you computer can likely be functional again without major expense.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • Is a SSD drive for a new Mac Pro "worth it"?

I will be purchasing a new Mac Pro quad-core in the next month or so. My computer usage, other than email and some word processing, consists primarily of editing RAW photo files using Nikon Capture NX2, Photoshop Elements, and iPhoto. I do almost nothing with video. Would a SSD boot drive offer me any significant advantage over a 1 TB hard drive? Would it appreciably speed up photo editing of the RAW files, or simply boot faster? If you do recommend one, what size would I need for a boot drive to contain the OS and all program software? I will be upgrading from my current G5, so I suspect anything will initially seem very fast. Thanks!

It depends on just how dependent on disk I/O your software is. Hard drives are still, by far, the slowest link in the performance chain for a computer. If your software is primarily CPU bound and goes to the hard drive very little, you won't notice the benefits of an SSD that much. I use Apple's Aperture, and Aperture is VERY sensitive to disk speed for the volume where your library file is. There are several key databases in the library package that are extremely sensitive to disk performance and particularly file fragmentation.
I have an OWC Mercury Extreme SSD that I use for my operating system and applications, and then I have a RAID 0 of three Western Digital Hard drives for my Aperture library. RAID 0 is striping with no parity. Since there is no parity and no protection from hardware failure, I back up with TimeMachine, manual copies and I also use Mozy.com for automatic offline backups.
The machine boots nearly instantly, and application launching is extremely fast. Most programs show a definite improvement and overall I am very pleased with the configuration.
However, Aperture's library databases are extremely prone to fragmentation. There is a noticeable and significant increase in performance every time I defrag my aperture volume with iDefrag, and if I have a really long editing session I can notice performance degrading over time.
Right now my workflow with Aperture is pretty sporadic, so defragmenting routinely isn't that big of an issue. However, I anticipate getting into Aperture more as I start photographing more projects. I think if that happens, I will probably get a second SSD and also finally convert my Aperture library from managed to referenced. Apple has added features in Aperture 3 so that referenced libraries aren't that big of a PITA, so I should be able to keep the Aperture databases on the SSD and reference my masters on my RAID drive. Best of all worlds.
Also do not buy the SSD from Apple. Right now the only viable SSD's are ones that do internal garbage collection like the OWC Mercury Extreme. See my other post here for the ups and downs of SSDs:

  • Found a small chip on the corner of my new macbook pro- worth calling?

I've had this mac since around December time so I've been very careful with my new purchase! I was just at my desk today when I realised there is small chip on the edge near the battery charger.
Is it worth calling apple about or will they not do anything?
Not sure what can be done, its just annoying considering its so new!

You are a bit over the Apple 14 day return period. There is no way to tell if it came like that and even if it did you would of needed to see it when you took it out of the box. And then taken it back for a replacement.
Sorry but as Steve says Apple will do nothing for you as this falls under accidental damage, as far as Apple is concerned.

  • Is First Generation MacBook Pro worth further investment?

Good Morning! After running disk utility (from a startup disk), I was only able to run "verify disk". The critical messages were:
-volume bit map needs minor repair
    -volume header needs minor repair
-the volume MAC HD needs to be repaired
I've tried all solutions listed in support and communities section- with no luck.
I can't even archive and install!
-Is TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior a possible solution if my files have some font issues?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Not really. If you can't get into the volume, you can't retrieve the files. What I would do is replace the drive then hook the old one up through an external enclosure and try to read the files from there.

  • Speck Case for Macbook Pro Worth It?

I just ordered the black seethru mbp case and was wondering if any of you enjoy it as much the reviews say it.  The real question i wanted to ask was since i always have it on my desk most of the time don't actually take it anywhere either, is the case still worth buying.  it was only $30 on amazon.  let me know because from what i'm reading it is.  i just thought maybe i wasted $30 since i don't actually move it too often away from the desk lol
    thanks

Yes, in my opinion you wasted $30. In the first place, the case doesn't offer any real protection against bumps and dings; all it prevents is superficial scratches. In the second place, if you don't transport your computer, it doesn't need protection against anything except spills on your desk, and the case won't help at all with those. And in the third place, the case will impair the machine's radiative cooling ability to some degree; that will be most noticeable if you use the MBP for gaming or other very demanding operations.
