QT tells me it can't open an mpeg file -- error (2048)
I have an mpeg file. I can open it on a Mac at school, but not on my own Mac. Here, I get:
QuickTime cannot open the file:
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)
I thought maybe it was because I didn't have Pro (which they do at school), so I bought the key. Waste of $, as that didn't solve anything. Help?
Mac OS X (10.4.4)
Some people have reported problems opening mpeg files if they have an .mpeg extension instead of .mpg. Try changing the extension if it is now .mpeg. Some mpegs from Windows systems have the 4 letter extension.
If that doesn't help try this freeware for viewing: VLC

Can't open Quicktime .mov file (Error -2048)
I can't open and run an 11mb QuickTime .mov file that was created, I'm pretty sure, on a Mac. I'm using a PC running QuickTime 7.2. Colleagues using PCs with QuickTime 7.0 and 7.1 can't run it either. The guy who created the file apparently has no problem running it on a Mac. My full error measage is "Error -2048: Coundn't open the file because it is not a file that QuickTime understands". Any ideas anyone?
Ask the guy that made the file what codecs are used in it. Mac users can open, save and edit .wmv files and he may have put one inside a .mov container. It will never play on a PC unless saved as .wmv extension.

"Can't open a scratch file" error
Running PSD 12.0.4 (Extended) on a Mac Pro, Mac OS 10.7.3. Plenty of ram; plenty of hard disk space.
I just finished installing a new 1TB drive in one of my bays; I now have (3) 1TB drives total. Initialized the new drive (Mac OS Extended/Journaled), partitioned for Lion, then installed the OS and migrated everything from my primary (boot) drive using Migration Assistant.
After finishing, PSD gives the following error on start: "Could not open a scratch file because the disk is not available". I can command+option on start, select the boot drive as scratch and set the rest to None; that configuration works (and sticks). However, if I try to set scratch volumes to either of my backup volumes, I get the same error. Additionally, Illustrator can't even see the other two volumes in the scratch disk selector (PSD sees them, but won't accept them).
Here's what I've done:
- using simple disk drive names (i.e. WD1, WD2, WD3)
- verified all drives with Disk Utility
- ran drive diagnostics on all drives using SMART Utility (no problems found)
- reset paramter ram (comand+option+p+r on Mac startup)
- repaired permissions (all volumes - no permission errors found)
- reset PSD prefs (command+option+shift on start)
- deactivated/uninstalled/reinstalled PSD
At this point, I'm stumped. This must be related to having installed the new hard drive (everything was fine prior to that), but I don't know what else to try at the moment.
Anyone have any ideas? Please read my original post (bullet item 6).
General comment - if you aren't going to give the original, detailed description a focused reading, then please don't post a reply. I haven't got the time to answer answered questions.
Also - no bragging intended - I am a Mac guy. I know the platform well, so anyone who wants to offer a Mac-related observation can assume I know what I'm doing and talk on an advanced level.
One additional observation - the problem persists when logged in under a different user account. -
Why does my macbook not support certain movie files. I have just bought a new video camera (flash drive type) but cannot open the files. It seems to be avi files and some mpeg files that it wont open, this didn't use to be a problem with the odd small movie file as i have a converter but is an absolute pain for movie editing. Am i being a bit thick or is this normal.
Do you need to edit these videos or just play them back? I like to use VLC media player for playback.
If you need to edit them, the easiest way, I think, is to convert them first. I don't do much video editing, so I may be wrong! If you're using Apple software for editing, check the forum here for information.

Cannot open corrupted .mov file - error 2048 unsupported format
Hi all,
I have an important corrupted video file and I have tried every way I can think of to open it, but to no avail...
When I open it with Quicktime, an "error 2048 unsupported format" shows up, even though other videos I took are fine.
I can't open this video with ANY softwares including VLC and friends (trust me, I tried LOADS of them)..
After doing MUCH research I understand that either the header/closing part of the file is messed up.
Is anyone able to teach me how to fix those parts?
I'm really at the end of my wits and I'm a just beginner to hex-editing @.@ Better still, if you are able to take a look at this video for me...
I'll be very glad if anyone can help me out with this as I really wish to recover the video, this is for an important friend, thanks in advance!
P.s. the video is about 120mb in sizeHi
Im using the tool called SUPER.
Its free and you can convert any file format to any other file format
Maybe it would be possible to convert his faulty file to another format and ten you could try to open it again using VLC player or other application. -
QT can't import mpg (windows-file) Error-2048
Hello everybody,
as I'm brandnew to the MAC community I have my first problem which i thought would be the easiest to go. All my old mpg of the Windows-world are not importable to IMovie or any other programm.
I wanted all to convert them and burn them with my new Laptop but it seems not possible. errormessage is
file cannot be "imported" with QT due to 2048.
Is there anything I'm doing wrong or is there a workaround because I will still get windows files from the DVD-harddrive.
Any help is welcomeHi Thomas:
Welcome to discussions!
iMovie does not work with muxed MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 clips (and that's what you're trying to do)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42996
You'll need:
MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 (free) and the MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 from Apple).

I just bought a MacBook Pro today and when I try to open iPhoto, it tells me "You can't open the application on iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete." Please assist me.

Why did you mark your post as solved?
You will be better off posting in either the Lion or the iPhoto forum areas as this area is for Macbook Pro issues. You are having software issues. -
On PowerBook G4 OS 10.5.8 my chess App tells me "You can't open the app 'chess' because it is not supported on this architecture. It has worked before. What does that means? What can I do to get it working?
It sounds like you might have accidently copied Chess over from an Intel Mac, or an Intel Mac's installer DVD. The architecture typically means it is designed uniquely for either Intel or PowerPC. Be sure to extract Chess from the 10.5 Retail installer disc that looks like * and not any other disk. http://www.charlessoft.com/ 's Pacifist lets you extract individual applications from installers without having to reinstall everything.

~Can't open "noname" MIME files in Gmail~
I've searched for this topic, but can't understand all the tech-speak! I'm in my 20s, so I'm not dumb, just not in the loop. Someone break this down for me in layman's terms.
I use Gmail for my primary email. Lately, I've been getting attachments from family members who use PCs. These attachments are always called "noname." When I hit "download," I get a message saying that it is a MIME message and asking what application I should open it with. I always get a bunch of nonsense no matter what I open it with! It looks like it's trying to be HTML, but opening it with Firefox doesn't work. Neither does opening it with the StuffIt Expander.
Even when I hit "View as text," it doesn't make any sense. I'll paste a copy below. Can someone please tell me what application to open up MIME files in?
This is only part of the message because it was too long to post. Here we go.... close your eyes!!

Ordinarily, your e-mail program.
I have a program I used to sell years ago when people started sending MIME e-mail messages that AOL couldn't understand. Perhaps I should update it if all the world is switching to gmail and gmail doesn't handle MIME either. 1996 is here again.
Anyway, click here to download it.
Technically this is a shareware program and technically I could make money from it. But very few people need this program anymore and it should work just fine for you in "demo" mode. -
I can't open a pdf file.
My computer was working fine until about 2-3 weeks ago. Suddenly I could no longer open a PDF file. I had Adobe Reader installed and all was good. I asked our IT guy and he suggested downloading Adobe Reader again. I did this and still get the error message. Then I had a friend to tell me to uninstall and reinstall. That did not work either. The error message looks like this:
Fill conversion - document name.pdf
Select the encoding that makes your document readable.
Text coding (then 3 options)
Windows (default) MS-DOS Other encoding
Then there is a pop-up window within the error message with all kinds of options.
Help!
Thank you!Good afternoon Pat,
It apparently has been a problem for three days of the supplier, that redirected bad was sending us documents. Thanks for your support and I hope they have fixed it.
Kind regards,

Hello,
I'm testing Acrobat 9.0.0 Pro extended and I can not open Solidworks 2009 files. But I can open Solidworks 2007 files. I'm on Windows XP 64 bits.
Can you tell me if this feature is corrected in newer version as 9.1 and later?
Or any other solution to be able to open the Solidworks 2009 files directly in Acrobat (without the need to open solidworks to convert the files into pdf 3D)?
Thanks for your help.Yes, you can convert 2010 SolidWorks file to STEP or PARASOLID files sometimes
you loose some informations during those conversions then you can read those files into Acrobat then sometimes you
can loose more informations... Why Adobe doesn't update some CAD formats what's append ???
In the first post nobody whan't to answer to my question ... why ???
Is-it an Adobe forum ??? -
