QT to AVI Type 2

I work at a public access TV station and their broadcast computer will only play DV video in an AVI Type 2 wrapper. It seems that Apple's FCP Studio doesn't make Type 2, but only type 1, so using Compressor or QT to convert the video does not work.
Anyone out there know how to make AVI type 2 files?

ffmpegX from Major. 10 $
Set for : MsMPEG4v2 (AVI).
Open your Qt file : make your settings in the video encoder - click on BEST for compression rate.
At the same time export a wav file from your Qt movie with QT pro. In the audio encoder import your wav file.(otherwise it won't work).
Cheers
Hung

I have imported a WMA-file in Audio-1 track of PE – still no sound to hear. But I can see the sound in the track. (Like in my video-clip) Therefore I also think it is a setting in PE. Will you be so kind to tell me where I have to look? Because I am no expert. Or is it possible that I have to activate anything in PE? It is first time that I will work with PE 9.
Further information: The original sound of the Mini-DVD is 5:1 surround. After first problem I have changed Nero to export in Stereo, but this did not solve the problem.

  • Problems exporting video to AVI TYPE 1 format

    Hello
I use the Final Cut Version ProHd for editing my videos but I'm having problems when exporting the final project.
The file is exported in the .mov format but I need it exported as AVI type 1 since it is going to be played in a PC.
If I export it as a regular AVI, it comes out without sound.
Anybody knows of a plugin that could solve my problem or another way to solve this situation?
    Thanks

  • Getting Your Files into DV-AVI Type II Format

The advice I’ve received on the forum suggests the best file format to edit in is DV-AVI Type II.   I have attempted conversions to this format unsuccessfully and had a couple of questions I’m hoping the community can answer.
    1.       Is DV-Type II the name of the compression codec used to generate the AVI file?  I have attempted video conversions with at least three different pieces of software but have never seen this provided as an option.  Is it a specific codec that I must download before my video conversion programs can use it or is it known under a different name?
    2.       For those of you who capture video in non-ideal formats, what third-party software do you use to convert to DV-AVI Type II.  I’ve tried QuickTime Pro (option wasn’t provided), 4videosoft (option wasn’t provided), and AVS Video Converter (option wasn’t provided).   My fallback position is editing with uncompressed AVI files, but they are unwieldy as you would expect.

Please be very wary of any CODEC packs. As Harm says, you should have it with PrPro. If you have Vista, you can download and install THEIR Vista CODEC pack - that is the only one that I would touch with that "10' pole."
Harm is fond of saying that a CODEC pack is the first step to wiping your HDD and completely installing everything again. I don't quite feel THAT strongly, but very close.
One of the problems with other software (and CODEC packs) is that they go out of their way to destroy other programs' CODEC's. Adobe kinda' "hides" theirs, so other programs cannot get to them easily - this will yield false positives from G-Spot and Sherlock the CODEC Detective, but they still function perfectly.

  • Exporting DV AVI Type 2

So here is the quick rundown...
I work at a small community cable television station. The system we use to cable-cast is windows based and plays Microsoft DV AVI files. The systems we edit with are G5's running the latest Final Cut Studio. After going back and forth with technical support of the manufactures of the cable-cast system we have decided that the problem lies with the fact I am exporting Type 1 AVI's which they tell me have a file size limit of 4GB, well under what a normal half hour show comes out to.
Is there anyway to get Final Cut to export Type 2 AVI's ? If not is there third party plug-ins or software that is priced reasonably?
    Thanks for the help.

Ah, terribly sorry. I misread. Looked like you were supplying programming to a network. But you're actually working in a shop that uses a production format that is completely incompatible with the 'cast output. Interesting engineering decision.
You can always try google, amazing stuff:

The upshot appears to be you need something that is not available on the Macintosh. I see no references to any tools that are OS10 compatible. But try macupdate and versiontracker.

  • Where is this elusive DV-AVI Type II export setting?

    Using PE4...
Recent threads on exporting parts of clips mention exporting to "DV-AVI Type II" and unchecking "Recompress" etc.  As far as I have found, I have three AVI options available via File - Export - Movie - Settings - General:
    Uncompressed Microsoft AVI
    Microsoft AVI
    Microsoft DV-AVI
Under Video - Compressor (if this is the relevant place to look), the Uncompressed Microsoft AVI option offers 10-bit YUV... or 8-bit YUV..., and both the the Microsoft AVI and Microsoft DV-AVI option offer DV NTSC or DV PAL.
I've searched around the settings and can't find anything that says "Type II".  So am I missing something obvious?  Do I need to download a different Codec or something?  Which export settings do I use to export DV-AVI Type II as recommended?
    Thanks for any help,
    Dave

This is essentially the same thing we covered in your other thread, Dave. Type 2 is not a format. It's a type of AVI.In fact, it's the only type of AVI Premiere Elements outputs.
So you don't need to worry about that. All you need to worry about is the codec -- and the codec you want to use is DV, which should be the default output setting for AVIs from this program.
I've included more details and instructions on outputting DV-AVIs in your other thread.

  • CS4: Converting AVCHD to DV-AVI Type II - what's your tool / approach?

My machine lacks the horsepower to handle native AVCHD without a lot of jerky playback issues, and in a previous thread I got a lot of good advice on solving this problem. Short of buying faster ponies, the best solution as I understand it is to first convert to the native DV-AVI Type II format that Premeire uses.
I thought that finding the appropriate conversion tool would be a short Google and / or Adobe Forum search away, but half a day of searching both and I've still not found a suitable solution. I'm attempting to convert .mts files from a Panasonic AG-HMC70P camera. Here are the results thus far for PC based programs:
    Koyote
It may get the job done, but it installs malware so it's a non starter.
    Super8
Perhaps it's able to accomplish the AVCHD - DV-AVI Type II conversion. However, I've not yet been able to flip the right switches to succeed. Perhaps if I had more education in world of video formats its user interface would be more intuitive, but I'm not seeing an obvious path to the correct conversion. Anyone successfully converted and imported the results into Premiere from this one? If so, what settings did you use?
    VoltaicHD
Seems like a nice program, but the output files didn't seem to play nice with Premiere. Audio & video out of sync.
I've looked at many others but these are the only ones I've downloaded and given a try. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who needs to do this conversion. If you have a tool that you're using that supports batches of files, I'd be grateful if you'd share the info on it.
If I can't find a good conversion program (wouldn't have thought it would be so hard to find one), I'm wondering if Adobe Media Encoder would generate the same results. In other words, if I dropped an .mts file on a timeline in Premiere and then exported it to AVI / NTSC DV Widescreen (or some other such setting), would this give me the same results, i.e. a native DV-AVI Type II file?
Would appreciate any suggestions you might have on converting AVCHD footage.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi, Rod.
    Good stuff, appreciate the link.
While it would be nice if I could find a suitable program to just batch convert the files, I don't seem to be having much luck on that front. It's a bit more of a workflow hassle to step it through Premiere -> Media Encoder in order to get the initial raw SD footage that I want to edit, but on the bright side it does seem to be the path of maximum control in terms of the quality of files I end up with for editing. So maybe that's the way to go.
    Thanks, man.

  • Convert avi type 1 to type 2 ???

How / best way / software to Convert avi type 1 to type 2 for use in PPro?

The classic for this has been the Ulead free tool.
    http://www.ulead.com/download/dvconverter/download.htm
When I looked for the site for it today, I see a post (on another site) that it may not convert clips over 4 Gigs correctly (and without any error message). Anyone know whether this is true?

  • "Out of memory" while importing AVI  type (AJA) file with AE CS3

With After Effects CS3 (version 8.0.2.27) when we import an AVI type (AJA) file greater than 2Gigs captured by an another PC with a Xena board AJA , a message window appears : After Effects: Out of memory.(945949kK requested) (23 :: 40). If we import the same file with After Effects CS2 (version: 7.0.1) we have no problem. If we import an AVI (AJA) file smaller than 2 Gigs with AE CS3 no problem
appears. If we capture an AVI type (Matrox) file greater than 2Gigs and import this one with AE CS3 no message appears. If we import a MOV type (AJA) file greater than 2 Gigs no problem appears with AE CS3. So to bypass this problem we are working with footage captured in MOV type file AJA. The PC which the AE CS3 is running has 4 Gigs of RAM with 2 Xeon Quad CPU.
    Thanks
    Marc

Most likely an issue with MediaCore trying to take over and then not getting it right... Have you checked with AJA? maybe they know something about it.

  • FCP and AVI DV Type 1

    Hi all
I was just wondering whether or not AVI files of the type 'DV Type 1' are able to come seamlessly into FCP 5.1.2? Or will it be necessary to render the files out in order to edit them?

I tried Canopus and upon starting to open the file I received a "The source file cannot be converted by this application.".   I also tried another .avi type 2 file that  was less than 2GB in size.   Guessing it is some incompatibility or codec issue.   If anyone has any suggestions here, let me know.
I found the Ulead type to type 2 converter.  Sure enough it mangled the audio towards the end as had been reported in a post.
DVDate appears to have done the trick.  I emailed the author to verify it just re-wraps.   If anyone has any experience with DVDate let me know.
By the way, is there a way to tell if a .avi file has been re-enoded from another by using Gspot or another utility?
Here are some notes from another post and a link to DVDate.  I don't think the last comment is correct re: DVDate an audio though.

  • Help with exporting AVI

I have an avi file thats 4.6GB. I am trying to simply import it add a title across it and export it as Avi. No problem importing it or adding title, but when i go to export I get a clip that is 8.6 GB (thats not a problem either) but the clip only plays a minute long and the title is not there. Opening in VLC it says avi file is broken. I can export a 3 minute clip with same settings and it works fine. Longer clip gets funky. Am exporting using Quicktime/ Movie to AVI/Copression DVCPRO50-NTSC/quality best/Interlaced 16:9 ratio. Antbody have an idea why this is doing this?

The VT5 is basically a switcher with greatly enhanced capabilities, so is only one step in the chain.
I am wondering if the computer, to which the VT 5 is installed/attached, can handle DivX material (CODEC) in an AVI wrapper. This will rely on that DivX CODEC being installed on the host computer.
If so, you can install the DivX CODEC on your computer and then output MS AVI, choosing the DivX CODEC in the Advanced/Encoding settings. This will result in a highly-compressed file in the AVI format. Though highly-compressed, the output quality for streaming media is very good. Note: you will not need the "Pro" version of DivX, as you will be using only the CODEC (free) and letting PrPro do the encoding for you.
Ask your instructor if the DivX CODEC will be acceptable to him/her. If so, that would be my choice for acceptable streaming quality and small file size, and it will be in the AVI "wrapper."
You did not state if you have an SD (Standard Def), or HD (High Def) Project, or I just missed that. If SD, then the next best choice would be DV-AVI Type II file, but the file size WILL be larger, at ~ 13GB / hour Duration. I would choose this, and deliver the file on an external device, like a stick, or external HDD (7200 RPM).

  • Help with exporting A Small AVI

I am working on a project for school using my schools computers to edit with Premiere Pro and After Effects cs3. I edited my project and exported it through the media encoder using H2.64 codec ane exported it as a .mp4 and it was slow for the my teacher to show to the class. He says it needs to be an avi but how do i export it as an avi and not have it a large file? The mp4 was only 1.4 gb but how large should the avi be and what would be the best export settings? The clips are 1920x1080 and where converted using cineform's neoscene. Thanks you!

  • My avi video files are no longer supported in PRE9? Help!

I created a movie in premiere elements 9  several months ago.  My video was imported from avi files on my computer.  The avi files were originally downloaded from my camera.  Everything was fine and I even burned a near finished copy of my project on a DVD.  Now, several months later, I open up the project to put my final touches on it and notice that all the avi video files are red in the timeline.  On the organizer tab for my project under media type, it says, "offline".  So, I clicked on the avi file and it asks me to find it.  I find it (the files have not moved) and click on it and I get this error, "Error Message. This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed."  This is very strange.  Do you have any ideas? My operating system is Windows 7.

I kind of suspected MJPEG (just a hunch, as two other CODEC's, commonly wrapped in an AVI, DivX and Xvid, seldom every play correctly to start with).
Now, there are many "flavors" of MJPEG. It is an older CODEC (or really type of CODEC, as there are so many versions), that was ressurected for use in mostly (then) stills cameras, with video capabilities added. It is not a bad CODEC, but each camera mfgr. has tweaked it for their purposes. This can create issues. MJPEG is not the "universal," that say DV-AVI Type II is. Canon will have a version, Nikon another and Panasonic yet another. They all show as MJPEG, but will be a bit different. A similar analogy can be drawn with Camer RAW files - Canon's differ from Nikon's, which differ from Panasonic's, though they are all Camera RAW. Also, Nikon, for instance, is constantly changing what is in their NEF (Camera RAW) files, so that the newest will require the latest release of Adobe Camer RAW (ACR), to be processed in Photoshop. MJPEG is similar to that, with fewer variations - but still individual variations.
Now, there could well be reasons that things have changed. The first one to strike me would be that you installed the software that came with that camera, and included its specific version of the MJPEG CODEC, then later removed say the camera's utility, taking that specific version of MJPEG away. You might well have others, but PrE is having a hard time matching them up.
In that article I linked to on MJPEG, I mention two popular MJPEG CODEC's, Morgan and MainConcept. Both are rather generic MJPEG CODEC's, and when MJPEG resurfaced, they worked fine for most such files. However, as time has elapsed, and camera mfgrs. tweaked and tweaked, they are less likely to work 100%. Once, they were the "silver bullet" for MJPEG - but not so much any more.We began seeing more users, with either, or even both, still having issues with newer MJPEG CODEC's. As most camera mfgrs. ship a copy of their specific version, somewhere along with the camera, it became common practice to recommend installing that specific version from the specific camera's utility disc. Unfortunately, that was not always easy to do. Some included their version of MJPEG as a separate installation (best way, IMHO), but many incorporated it into the camera's driver installation (still good), and then there are those instances, where the specific version of the MJPEG CODEC is installed along with other utilities on the disc, such as maybe a little editing program, or a file cataloging utility. Scant mention is ever made of the specific MJPEG CODEC, and how it is installed on one's system. The latter method seems to be the most common now. I have the full utilities, including the camera's own editing programs, installed for my Canon, my Nikon and my wife's Panasonic. That means that I have at least five (think that the total count is eight on my workstation) MJPEG CODEC's: one for Canon, one for Nikon, one for Panny, one Morgan and one MainConcept.
What camera produced those MJPEG AVI files?
Do you have that camera's editing and cataloging utility installed?
Do you have the utility disc for that camera?
Have you removed any such editing, or cataloging utility, between the time that the files worked, and when they did not?
I do not believe that any version of PrE actually installs any version of MJPEG (could be wrong here), though they work with, and include various other MainConcept (mostly MPEG) CODEC's. That means that one will need to install an MJPEG CODEC, and the one specific to that camera, might be required.
You obviously do have an MJPEG CODEC (or more), installed in your OS. As there is a vast difference between playback of an AV file, and editing that same file, it could be that PrE is just not able to use the installed version, with those files. As it once was able to edit them, I am guessing that something has changed, and it could be as simple as cleaning out one of the supplied utilities for the camera, that also removed its specific version of the MJPEG CODEC.
As PrE does not install the specific version of the MJPEG CODEC, many recommend not trying to edit such material. I am not of that mindset, but do allow that one might have to do some extra work (and work that is NEVER outlined in the camera mfgr's literature - unfortunately), to get things to work. I had to install a bunch of programs, that I will never directly use, just to be able to edit the MJPEG AVI's from my family's cameras, in both PrE and PrPro. I hate having to do that, as it fills up my HDD with stuff, that will otherwise never be used - but I need the specific CODEC, and it's only available to be installed WITH other software - all too common nowadays, and a mistake on the part of the camera mfgrs. IMO.
Good luck, and I hope that with the specific MJPEG CODEC, you will be back up and editing your footage, as you were once able to do.
    Hunt
PS - sorry for writing an entire encyclopedia there, but MJPEG is not as simple as it could be.

  • What Presets for This Avi File?

I have a couple of .avi files of musical movies (from tv) that I would like to edit in Premiere (which I've virtually never used before, only some intermittent stuff with my little digital camera... no real knowledge ).
What I want to do is simply extract the singing and dancing from the storyline.
Windows tells me this much about the files:
    624 x 352 pixels

    video 23 frames per sec

and gspot gives me this, most of which I don't even understand:

Now those figures don't match any of Premiere's existing 'presets' and don't provide enough info for me to make up a custom preset.
Can anyone help me out? Tell me what presets to put in or direct me to software that will interrogate this file and get the preset info for me?
OR: if there's an easier way/software to do what i want to do - what is it?
    regards,
    ab

The Xvid CODEC will be a real problem. For the rest, a Desktop Preset with the attributes customized to match, will get you to editing - just not with the Xvid CODEC. I would use Harm's advice to convert to DV-AVI Type II, and issues should go away.
With Harm's other suggestion, I have found that CyberLink's PowerDirector program does an OK job with Xvid/DivX material, but it IS heavily compressed and is a streaming media delivery format. It should ONLY be used as such, and not as source footage. Also, Premiere Elements will have the same issues, as will PrPro.
For some more background on CODEC's, this ARTICLE might prove useful.
    Good luck,
