QT will not launch on Vista

When I click my QT short cut I see a flash and the QT thumbnail in my tool bar (as if its running). The restore and maximize from the thumbnail is grayed out. The only way I can get QT to run is to find a saved QT file and open it.
I am running the pro version and have just installed the latest update on my system ...with no change in performance.
WHat gives?

When I click my QT short cut I see a flash and the QT thumbnail in my tool bar (as if its running). The restore and maximize from the thumbnail is grayed out.
Similar sorts of problems can be caused by a dodgy QuickTime display preference. If that's what is afoot here, we can probably get around it by rebuilding the QuickTime preferences files.
First, quit QuickTime if you have it open.
Next, you'll need to make sure you are set up to view hidden files and folders in XP.
1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected.
5. Click OK.
Next, you'll remove the QuickTime preference folder (and contained files).
6. In My Computer, open Local Disk: C or whichever drive your documents are stored on.
7. Open the Documents and Settings folder.
8. Open the folder with the name of the XP user account in which QuickTime isn't launching properly.
9. Open the Local Settings folder.
10. Open the Application Data folder.
11. Open the Apple Computer folder.
12. Drag the QuickTime folder out onto the Desktop.
Now you'll rebuild the preference folder and file.
13. Launch QuickTime. Does it open up properly this time? (Eventually?)
