QT wont open .mov file

Just as the title says... When I double click on the file, QT comes up with a message that says,
"The file is not a movie file."
File name:

  • Can't open movie files in browser or email

Hi, I'm not sure if this issue has been dealt with yet; however, I can't open movie files contained in emails or in my Safari Browser--even ones labeled as QT files. I am running Quick Time 7.0.4 on my 10.3.9 eMac. This is a recent problem, as I didn't have this difficulty until the last month or so. I had unchecked the "Open Safe Files" box in Safari's preferences some time ago as a precaution against a virus/worm, but rechecked it after the last one or two Security Updates. What else should I do to resume opening movie files? QT Player runs just fine with movie trailers, etc, but not in mails or the browser.

Under the Safari Help menu choose "Installed Plug-ins". This will confirm your QuickTime install.
Under Safari Preferences/Security make sure you've got plug-ins enabled.
Try dragging the email attachment to the Desktop and see if it plays from there.

  • Can't open .mov files in quicktime anymore

I can't think of any system changes that I've made recently but a few days ago I was able to open .mov files with quicktime and now I can't. I get the following error when I try to open one. Error -1856: an unknown error occurred (filename.mov) I've uninstalled quicktime, rebooted and reinstalled with no luck. I've searched these forums and googled the error number but can't find anything. Does anyone know what might be going on? Thanks.

Actually, I can't open anything in quicktime anymore. I've tried opening avis, mov, mp4 and m4a files... all give the same error message and number. I've reinstalled both qt and itunes but no luck.

After recent QuickTime updates fcp and QuickTime will not open .mov files captured on my FS-H200. I put this onthe quick time thread and they sent me here.

and NEVER do a software update unless you've got a clone of your startup drive so you can restore your system to it's working state if something goes wrong.

  • Can't open mov files on my ipad

Since one of the last IOS updates, I can't open Mov files sent from my own IPhone  via email.
I have had a new ipad swapped under warranty, and have reloaded all software from scratch.
When I get the email with the video file. The file is an attachment, I click the file, it downloads, then when I click it to view the video I get a white screen with the file name in the middle and the words quick time movie. And nothing happens

You should download VLC and try viewing the .mov file with it - for troubleshooting.

My After Effects Adobe CS6 student version 5K retina display Mac is not working and the mocha is not opening movie files I have in my computer. How do I resolve this? Please send me instructions via my e-mail:- [email protected]

I doubt that's going to happen.  The whole idea of a forum is so OTHER people can read your problem and share in the solution.

  • Elements 13 wont open raw files from Nikon d750

Elements 13 wont open raw files from Nikon d750 camera, wont update either from the help menu, any ideas what to do.

    carper
According to Adobe document, you require installation of at least Camera Raw 8.7 for your Nikon 750 for your Photoshop Elements 13 and Premiere Elements 13.
    https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
And, I believe based on the following that Photoshop Elements 13 Premiere Elements 13 ships with Camera Raw 8.6.
    https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
Consequently, the solution appears to revolve around getting the Help Menu/Updates to work since there is no manual install of Camera Raw 8.7 for 13.
Until the Premiere Elements update problem is resolved, you may have to resort to using the Nikon software. There is also the DNG 8.7 Converter
which you can download from Adobe link, not requiring the Help Menu/Update as does Camera Raw 8.7.
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 8.7
There have been several reports of Help Menu/Update failures. I have not seen a generalized solution. I can only offer the
the typical "Does the problem exist with and without the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled?"

  • Logic X can't open .mov files?

Logic Pro X won't allow me to open .mov files, whereas Logic 9 had no problem. Is Logic 9 still better for "Music to Film" projects?

Hi, when Garageband 3 (GB07) came out, the same thing happened but they released a patch/update shortly after. Seeing as how iLife '08 just came out, I'd say just sit tight for a week or so and they're bound to come out with the update.

  • QuickTime X on Lion crashes on opening movie files

Hi — am running OS X 10.7.3 on a 2010 MacBook Air, and have discovered that QuickTime (10.1) will not open movie files (tested with .mov and .m4v so far).
    The error includes this line:
Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: '-[NSViewController loadView] could not load the "MGPlayerDocumentView" nib.'
And upon trying again I get the message:
The application “QuickTime Player” unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.
Any suggestions on fixing this?  The files open fine in iTunes and VLC, but QuickTime crashes every time.  In earlier days I'd have reinstalled it, but with the download of Lion that doesn't seem to be an option (no installer files available).

Ah well.  Resorted to reinstalling Lion from the recovery partition, and that seems to have fixed it.

  • Opening mov files - weird color patterns + freeze

    Hi,
Suddenly when opening mov files, quicktime shows weird colors instead of a video. It also takes a long time to open, and quicktime then hangs. I don't know what I installed that could have caused the problem. I tried reinstalling but that doesn't help.
I use vegas as video editor, and there I can still import quicktime movies without problems.
It used to work before on my xp64pro!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    wouter

it might be worth checking to see if you can just get away with disabling Direct3D accleration on the PC. it's also probably worth checking your video drivers too.
the following document has some nice pointers in those regards. (iTunes uses QuickTime for video playback, so the same basic troubleshooting techniques apply.)

  • Excel 2008 wont open excel files from at WHS network share.

    hi all
i have a strange problem here, i own a mac mini the 2.53ghz model bought a month ago, and a macbook (the white model) also bought a month ago, both running all the latest software updates, and office 2008 for mac, with all the latest updates
on the mac mini, i can´t open any excel documents that are stored on a shared folder on my windows home server, it just says
excel cannot open this file the file might have been damaged or modified from its original format
but when i try to open the same document on the macbook, it opens just fine?
i have tried to remove office 2008 and reinstall it on the mac mini, but that didnt help, and the strange thing is if i move the excel files, from my windows home server, to another windows home server, it opens just fine on the mac mini
i then suspected that it was the WHS that was ****** up, and deleted the account on the WHS where the folders were stored, rebooted the whs, and added the account again, but with the same result, the mac mini wont open the excel files, it will open word files, from the same folder.
and the macbook will still open both excel and word files, from the same folder?
i´m really confused now, and cant seem to pinpoint the error, and hope that someone can give me some pointers of where to look?
    sincerely

You're pobably better off posting your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products, as it's their software you're having issue with:

  • Try to open mov file with quicktime, says can't open pdf files.

    Hi to everyone,
Suddenly I try to open a mov, any mov file, with quicktime 10.4 and some times opens the finder and nothing more, some times says that it cannot open one pdf document ( a document I actually have but never try to open with QT). some times QT says it canot open some png or jpg file.
But I double click mov files. And the incoherence is permanent, I mean that for the same movie file says it can't open the same pdf file, and in other file the same png, or the same jpg.. it depends on the mov file I try to open.  Like if somewhere, somme kind of cache, adresse or reference is wrong.
this is the text of one of those messages when I double click a mov file:
"The document “phoenixRoomfillerB_v001_0104.jpg” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “JPEG image” format."
And if I try again and again, at some point QT open only the finder window.
The weird thing is that on the finder window i can see the preview and play the preview. and the same mov files play well with VLC. And if I copy the mov file to my desktop it plays well unless QT start to open only the finder window, if that happens it does not work anymore with any file.
The files are on an external drive with 3 partitions.
And I make all the possible cleaning that I can:
I am the administrator of the imac and I am the only one to use it.
I am the owner of the volume
I use disk utility to check and everything is ok
I use onyx to clean as much as possible, cache, boot, volume structure, smart status, home folder permissions, kernel, extensions, QT components, etc. and everything works fine.

Try QT v7.x which is located inside your Utility folder.

  • How to open .mov files in m2v1 format?

I have a number of video files in the following format:
    'm2v1', 720 x 576 (1024 x 576), Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Left, 48.000 kHz
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Right, 48.000 kHz
I have Quicktime 7with the Mpeg-2 component (£15 extra of course) installed as well as Mpeg Streamclip and Perian. I still cannot open these files.
When I try to open them then I get a blank screen but with the audio alone.
I don't know the source camera for this footage but its driving me bananas thinking I've got a solution and then finding that I am no further forward.
I have googled and read through this forum but cannot find any comparable problem or solution.

You need to re-Google as this is in these forums and suggests Streamclip works for the issue. I think if not you will face iMovie issues as an alternative since iMovie depends on this type of file to be on board the camera with the data files used by iMovie to interpret the content intact, e.g. from the finder the file alone will not import (or apparently play).
There is a lot in Google about this format one solution being a hex eidtor to change two instances of M2V1 in the file to another (IIRC MP2V).
From prior posts here: +M2V1 is the FourCC for your raw MPEG2/AC3 files on the camcorder. These files are not edit compatible since they contain I-, P-, and B-frames in a GOP (group of pictures) structure. In order to edit the content, iMovie '08 transforms the files as part of the import process. Basically the content is demultiplexed, the video frames are decoded and the and saved as all I-frames in an MOV file container. Since this essentially turns the MPEG-2 content into Motion-JPEG, the video can now be edited. At the same time, the audio data is also demultiplexed and the individual left and right audio channels are transcoded to individual AIFF (linear PCM audio using "Big Endian" byte order) and stored in the same MOV file container along with the transformed video. A time code track and start and/or end data offsets are then added to minimize possible audio-video drift in the final MOV file.+
+I suspect your problem is that your Mac Pro recognizes the modified files and can play/process the data using the iMovie '08 installed support while your MacBook Pro does not have this support and relying on the original M2V1 FourCC, is trying to decode the video using the QT MPEG-2 Playback component instead. Since this component apparently will not handle the modified video, all you get is the audio which is "natively" compatible with the base QT structure.+
+If true, then you have two options. The first is to copy the raw camcorder files to your MacBook Pro and convert them manually to whatever compression format you want using the QT MPEG-2 Playback component you already have together with MPEG Streamclip as suggested by David or you can install iMovie '08 or the missing component(s) to your MacBook Pro to make it compatible with your "iMovie '08 converted" MOV files+
