QT7 / animation codec corrupts movie

Digitizing SDI video using Kona 2 and FCP 5 on OS 10.4.2. Clip looks OK in FCP. Then I export as QT movie using lossless animation codec. Most clips play fine in QT Player, but about one in ten have strange corruption: they look fine while playing but show wierd artifacts (portions of previous frames 1-3 seconds earlier) when stopped. Shuttling the clip also shows problem, restarting playback from midpoint plays garbage, but playback from the beginning then looks fine again (until stopped). Same file plays back just fine under QT 6.5 in both Mac and PC. But not in QT 7.0.1 or 7.0.2 in either Mac or PC!
It's not just a display issue either. When imported into Avid (PC), garbage becomes permanent. Seemed like a keyframe issue, so I tried playing with the "keyframe every... setting" which fixed some clips but not all.

Same thing here after updating to Tiger - and on TWO machines - a dual G5 and a dual G4. One out of every 10 files compressed with Animation Codec or so gives bizarre double frames, hangs on playback or won't even copy to another drive. Exporting to another codec sometimes helps, but the glitches often make it into the new file.
APPLE - ***??!?!?!?!?
This is causing a LOT of trouble on my end, as the client is expecting all these files today - which take forever to render out of my 3D program and now several of them will have to be rerendered!!!!!
This better be fixed in 7.0.4.

  • Videos encoded with Apple Animation Codec won't play properly in QT7.5

Quick Time version I have installed is 7.5 (149.5). I also have Perian 1.1 and Mpeg2 codec for QT.
All of a sudden, all videos I render using Apple Animation Codec with alpha channel won't properly play in QuickTime, nor in Preview (when you click on .MOV file and press Space). They actually play, but colors are all screwed up and it looks like it's playing only alpha layer. I tried same movies on my work buddy's Mac and everything looks perfet. I also tried importing those videos into Flash, and everything works fine, but when I have to preview them in QT or using Finder's Preview, they look crazy. I can't send any screenshots since this thing happens on my work iMac (new aluminum one, Leopard 10.5.4, all updates installed) and I am at home now.
I tried reinstalling QT but to no avail, nothing changed. I've looked through Library/QuickTime subfolder, and only items I could find were QuickTimeMPEG2.component, Perian.component, ffmpeg.component, and AppleIntermediateCodec.component.
I'm slowly going crazy over here, because nothing I tried worked.
Is there any way of completely removing everything QT related and reinstalling it from the scratch ? Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

Hah, found out what's the problem. It is not my computer, it is not my QuickTime got corrupt. It is QuickTime's bug decoding movie file encoded using following combination of settings:
    Quick Time encoder
    Compression Type: Animation
Depth: Millions of colors+ (alpha channel included)
    Quality: Best
    ParticleIllusion
    Output options
    Save Alpha - enabled
Remove Black bg from RBG channels - if this item is enabled, this is exactly what gives QT problems trying to encode it. I repeat, this option must be enabled in some cases (it removes that nasty black-dirt-looking extra halo glow around the object that already has some kind of glow applied to it). It makes your animation rendered with alpha channel a lot better looking and animation seamlessly blends with any kind of colored background. Well, QT has problems "reading" this format.
In the same time, if you import such animation rendered with this option enabled into Flash, everything looks perfectly fine. It's just QuickTime won't play it properly.
Every single Mac I checked has this same problem, and it's not Mac's problem, it is QuickTime problem.
I have two examples, you can see it yourself:
First one is when black bg is still present in RGB channels (animation looks exactly as it should):
    http://www.sasha-z-creations.com/quicktime/Example_BlackPresent.mov
And second one is when black bg is removed from RGB channels (colors looks weird):
    http://www.sasha-z-creations.com/quicktime/Example_BlackRemoved.mov
I repeat, both examples look exactly the same (great looking) when imported into Flash dev utility.
    Cheers!

  • Merge/concatenate animation codec movie files in the command line/shell

We know how to join 2 mp4/h264 movies together in the command line/shell via MP4Box.
We have not been able to find a similar tool for joining to Quicktime Animation codec movie together via command line/shell.
Anyone know how to do that of have suggestions?

    Hi,
I'm also having trouble with this same issue. I've been trying to change the Quicktime Default Setting to 10-bit uncompressed (btw codec works fine out directly out of QT and other apps), or to use the command line to do quick renders of tiff frame sequences to QT 10-bit. I think its a problem with my syntax on the command line. As per the manual I set up a fileout in a script with 10-bit as the codec, opened the script in Textedit and followed the instructions on p393, and dropped it into the include/startup directory. Below is a copy of the Textedit view of the script output settings. Also, If I want to use these settings the command line what should I change? The quotation marks, commas etc?
"QuickTime", "Shake 3 QT 1", "Apple FCP Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2",
    0, "100W@c6000WDcsuHpoe10pFnKA6W230PPMMRH#0LgfI5ALV1EaKGn3DG3214QaPb03SeOBPg00K1bY AESIIW0KAbabF7YWOQan8401v6QvQehFnRYIBt9be1B4AEjYA6ci8YmM#IKXCg5aRMZC2MXBM0Ani04w HAJLmBrQ97MtegeEEO9d5oBoxCgv7GNhEOvai8INwFwb2roIf91bvbr040HAK4IYCW0",
    0, 44100, 16);
I get the same message returned in Terminal:
error: - NRiCompressor - corrupted input data (length)
The QuickTime codec specified in the global default could not be selected. The system default codec will be selected.
So it renders to Animation. Something else I found was that the example on p393 in the manual is for 10-bit uncompressed - so I tried copying it right off the page, into Textedit, and into the include/startup dir - still no joy.
Can anyone shed any light on the matter?

  • Gopro 2.7k export quicktime animation codec custom 22gb mov file?

Adobe support told me to export using quicktime <animation codec <custom 2704 x 1536 res for my gopro 2.7k and it turned into a 22.5 gb mov file. (not even 2 minutes long!!!!)
What do I do next? I mean I cant upload that to youtube. (well I could)
I'm new to adobe is there a better way to get my 2.7k res without it being 22.5gb or how do I convert it smaller and what would be the best for youtube.
I'm trying to get the best quality so I can view it later on my retina screen. Should I just upload it as is for best quality even if it takes a day lol? Thanks soooo much

Ya np I actually just check again, back in july 2010 youtube allowed various 4k formates then lowered in 2012 to 2048 x 1536 (I'm glad I just checked that)
So ya I've been researching youtubes uploader as much as I can and from different people have said large files get crushed so some have had better results converting it to a smaller size (not resolution) and uploading it for better results but now I have a 22gb 1 minute video and am wondering the best way to convert it smaller.
Also strange question but converting a 2.7k to 1080 will provide cleaner and crisper picuter but how would a 2.7k exported at 4k look. I would think it'd look grainy but what if you were viewing that on a 1080 screen?

Then I put those Mov's into Premiere. Everything looks crisp until I render. Once rendering is done, the video quality degrades. Here's a screen shot of Premiere:
On the left is the source MOV (exported from AE), on the right is the timeline viewer (after rendering). The quality on the right is degraded. Help?
If I use MP4 versions, exported out of Flash, through Media encoder, quality is not degraded.

It was easy and quick to create my MOV's out of AE, which is why I did it this way. I'm exporting to MOV's so I can edit quicker in Premiere. I find editing to sound in AE really difficult, and I don't edit in Flash (employees provide SWF files to me).
Here is sequence settings in Premiere (these setting were created by dragging an MOV into the sequence and choosing "change settings" to match clip settings.

  • AE CC doesn't import Mov Files.  Apple Prores / Animation Codec

    hallo,
After Effects doesn't import my Prores / Animation Codec Files.
at very first it did not work and the message appeared: "after effects error: file "xxx.mov" cannot be imported - this "moov" file is damaged or unsupported. "
Then i restarted AE and my computer a few times and suddenly it worked. but after closing AE again, AE does the same error.  It does not work even with its own rendered Files from CC!!
I have considered to use only files i know they have worked in the past.
i also asked some freelancers to open it. and yes they confirm it works on CS 5, CS 6.
    also
    System:

    Speicher  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Grafikkarte  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

I can not reliably import/export ProRes or Animation QTs with After Effects CC. I believe accepting the latest update to CC initiated this problem. I did not have this problem last week. I have converted all of my source QTs to .PNG sequences and .AIFs as a work-around.
    System Details:
    CS 6 CC | Mac OS 10.8.4 | MacPro5,1 | 96 GB Ram | PROJECT & MEDIA drive: Mercury Accelsior > 500 MB/s read/write | CACHE drive: Mercury Accelsior > 500 MB/s read/write | Nvidia Quadro 4000 Mac | CUDA Driver: latest update.
    Troubleshooting Info:
    • I don't have Blackmagic or Aja, but I do have Nvidia Quadro 4000 Mac with the latest Nvidia and Cuda drivers. I'll try uninstalling... but I may want to raytrace in the coming days.
    • I've trashed the 12.0 folder and rebooted many times
    • repaired permissions
    • Multi-threding on/off doesn't matter
    update
    • "QT32Server process" appears then disappears Activity Monitor when I try to render ProRes (output module fails...)
    • No firewall
    • Uninstaled Nvidia driver. Restarted. Same problems.
    and then
    • Created a fresh admin user. This seems to work for now: I can read and write QTs through AE again. I'll update if there are any changes.
    update again
    • Once again, I  can not import ProRes QTs into AE CC. Making a new user only worked for 2 launches. The only software I used with this system/new user was Adobe AE CC, PS CC, and Safari.
    Any suggestions?
    Best,

  • Animation codec is incompatible

After updating to OS 10.9 on my mid 2010 Mac pro all the animation encoded video on my computer wont play through quick view and has to be converted in order to preview in QT. It doesnt show thumbnails in the finder either.
Are others experiencing this incompatibility issue or is this something unique to my computer like a corrupted codec file? Does anyone know of a fix for this? The animation codec is a standard QT codec and I am shocked that OS 10.9 cant recognize it. Thanks for your help!

Sending an email to TeleStream and posting the question in their forums provided an explanation: there seems to be a fundamental change in the way OS X handles plugins in Mavericks which killed Quick Look support for 3rd party codecs and components; this is thought to be due to a move away from Quick Time and towards Core Media.
What irks me a bit is that TeleStream knew this and stayed mum, letting their users upgrade to Mavericks without a warning.

  • Are the ProRes codec and .MOV file no longer supported?

I posted the following over at Creative Cow with no luck... hopefully I can get answers here ...
I am on a MAC - I joined the Adobe bandwagon during the great FCP migration of 2011 ... So far it's been great but...
Both Premiere CC AND After Effects CC are not recognizing Pro Res ...heck it doesn't seem like they are recognizing QUICKTIME in general (both progams are rejecting a .MOV I have with the animation codec) ...
When I try and open up a CS6 sequence in CC I get a message saying "The preset used by one or more of the sequences in this project requires third party components that could not be located." When you click ok just to get the project open, the media is offline.
When I try and IMPORT a .MOV into Premiere CC I get "The importer reported a generic error."
When I try and IMPORT a .MOV into AE cc I get "Cannot be imported- this 'MooV' file is damaged or unsupported.
When I try a test render out of AE cc the default Format is Quicktime, but when you go to the Video Output Format Options the Video Codec has the number "0" instead of a list of codecs .... and when you click on the "0" it changes to "-1". Seriously there are NO codecs listed in the Options - No ProRes, No Animation, just the number zero.
Media Encoder obviously is essentially the same story.
This seems to be a Quicktime thing ... not JUST a ProRes thing.
CS6 has no problems working with my Mac and QT/ProRes ... so I know it's not my machine...
I really don't feel like calling India today to process a refund, but if I can't get this working on my Mac I dont need to pay for Adobe CC.

Did you know that there has been a major overhaul to prores and where\how it's installed?  I've had the same issue, but I ran the following test:
I've installed the compressor, I used the cs6 prores and... ...FAILURE.  I was on CS6, and it didn't work... ...Why?  Tell ya in a moment...  Next step:
I undid the last action by dumping the prores presets.  Then I installed the cs7\cc version.  Bingo.
I went and researched the problem.
Apple now includes most of the prores specification in the quicktime bundle (except their new 444).  It's all in the same bundle.  I looked into some workarounds people have used to get it working without pro-apps... ...they all focus on using the older prores which is installed as separate packages... ...and separate bundles.  What does this mean?
If you are above 10.7 for your mac os, and you have compressor (latest), you have the prores built into the quicktime bundle.  If you are 10.7 or below, and you have the version of compressor for that period (same codec, different file arrangement), you have the prores codecs all in separate bundles.  They are inactive but still included in the quicktime bundle for 10.8 and above, so you couldn't use them without the right presets, along with compressor which changes the files to an actual bundle instead of a simple file inside the quicktime packaging.
If you are on later mac os and you have CS5 or above, use the CC version of the presets.  If you have the older prores or an older compressor and wish to try and hack it in, you can do it, and then use the CS6 version of the presets supplied by adobe.  They point to different bundles in the system.  I use both, on different machines.  IF you have cs5, you may want to use the "hack" way, and install the prores from older compressor, even if you have the newer one... ...They work faster in cs5 if you use the CS6 presets.  Why?  I do not know for certain, but I believe it has to do with the 32bit crosstalk.  Cs6 starts with 64 and has to "dumb down" to 32 for a connection to quicktime directly, and then, if it finds 64bit architecture, smart-*** up to 64 again.  In Cs5 you're stuck in 32 most of the way on the back end.  Only a guess.
And when importing into premiere... ...HMM... >>>I had the same problems you had...  It wanted to only import audio.  If you have the time...  Try:
Copy the presets from adobe that are for AME into the proper sequence preset folder of your Premiere app (the previews folder).  You should also try and find a way to set up your main sequence edit.  Try to remember that an AE import must be:
Fully Rendered into a file, and not linked from AE but from the file itself OR
The composition must be set to the same uncompressed codec (which means you need the preset in the AE app folder as well, finding this will be difficult, best of luck).
Remember to match your preset to your codec.  IF you have separate prores bundles, use cs6 versions of the preset, and if you have the latest bundle, use the cC\cs7\2014 versions.  This will let AE provide an uncompressed composition, but very slow in previewing, and if you render out, remember to render to a whole file (you can try to render-farm, but you still have to re-render in AME or Compressor afterward, as farm will only render out the frames and an audio file, not the proper file wrapper, even if you specify that wrapper;  You have to build the file wrapper from the images and audio after you've rendered any effects).

  • Animation codec not supported in maverics?

I have several quick time movies that I rendered using the animation codec and never had a problem watching them with the quick time player. The quick time player in mavericks is converting them to Apple pro res before starting playing them. It takes a lot of time and the resolution drops considerably.
Has anyone had the same problem? Is there a way to make the player read the QT animation codec?
    Thanks

The QuickTime codecs should be available If QT is loaded on your computer, but they might not have presets. Select Format: QuickTime, and Video Codec: Animation.

  • After effects animation Codec won't import into FCP

    Hi
I have used After Effects to do a green screen key on some HD 1080i footage.
I then went to export - quicktime movie - animation
I understand that the animation codec is the only way to export with an alpha channel so that I can put other footage in after my nice green screen key.
I set quality to best and frame rate to 25, I also tried frame rate as current and it exports and plays back fine in quicktime movie player, but won't import into final Cut.
The error message is "wrong frame rate"
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am quite new to after effects and wonder if there is something wrong with the way it is seeing the footage as I shot in widescreen and the image is squeezed as for a 4:3 TV aspect ratio.
    Thanks.
    Ajay

    1. Check your AE composition settings (cmd-k) and be sure your frame rate is set to 25... AE uses the frane rate of your composition and not the settings in your export module...
    2. Do not use the "export" command in AE... that is used only for special purposes only (i.e. for using "quicktime exporto compnents" not available under the export queue)...
    3. use the "make movie" or "add to export queue" command instead
    4. You expot module should be set as:
    - best settings
    - animation + alpha
do not specify any frame rate in the export module!! AE automatically uses the frame rate in your composition settings!!
    5. Export and import into fcp...
I never had problems with AE animation+alpha and fcp 6.0.1

  • File size limitation - rendering out anim codec QT in CS5?

I'm currently having a problem rendering out a composition.  The composition is roughly 4000 frames (HD 720p60).  I rendering out the scene using quicktime, using the animation codec and if I render out the whole sequence the file size seems to stop growing at 2.15GB and the file is unrecognized by Quicktime; says it's not a movie.  If I make a smaller subset of the same composition; say frames 1-1000, the file is about 1.99GB in size and will play in Quicktime.
I tested this out further by rendering out all 4000 frames as individual tif frames and reading them into my co-workers CS3 AE and then making a movie (animation codec) and it works ~ 6.6GB file.  Works both on his machine and mine.
Is there a limitation in CS5 AfterEffects that doesn't allow for files greater than 2.15GB.  If so, it's going to really mess up my workflow.  By the way, I'm running this on a 2 x 2.93 Quad-core Intel Xeon; 16GB Ram, NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800.  Running AE in 64-bit mode.
    Any ideas!?!?!

    > Perhaps submitting bug reports/complaints to Apple as well as the feature-request/bug-report form for Adobe will help?
Both are a good idea. If we get more bug reports, then we can get a better sense of how many people are hit by this and either a) elevate the issue more with Apple or b) bite the bullet and engineer some workaround (though I don't know exactly what that would be).

  • What is APPLE ANIMATION codec?

Why would an Avid editor produce an APPLE ANIMATION Quicktime rendering to deliver a standard def clip? What is APPLE ANIMATION and why is it not recognized as an importable clip? (My solution was to re-code to NTSC DV Anamorphic with Compressor).

What is APPLE ANIMATION and why is it not recognized as an importable clip? < </div>
Google or Wiki would have answered the first part of the question except it's not really Apple's Animation codec. Well, literally, that's true; practically it's just Animation and has been a least common denominator for sneaker-netting lossless movies between applications or workstations.
why it's not just dropping into your timeline is probably a user error on your Avid guy's part or it was delivered to you on an improperly formatted drive. IF you successfully opened it and converted it, it should have dropped right into FCP.

  • Lower 3rd (in Animation Codec mills +) is darker after exporting to QT?

    Hello
My After Effects lower 3rd (Animation Codec mills +) is darker over video after exporting to QT movie? It only looks darker in the areas where the lower 3rds are layered over the video on the final exported QT. But, this doesn't show up in FCP; it looks perfect in the canvas during playback. So I'm not sure what's happening.
Any help would be lovely. Thanks.

Can anyone spot the error in what I'm doing? It's got to be something simple. I've created a time-lapse using these steps (I think) before, so I don't think there's a bug in the program anywhere. Any help appreciated.
Not exactly an error, but I do have a question. If you are sourcing JPEG images to an image sequence file which creates a QT Photo JPEG compression file which is already import/edit compatible with iMovie and currently plays in the QT 7 Player correctly without a "black screen" problem, why are you exporting the data to the AIC compression format instead of simply saving the Photo JPEG sequence file and importing it directly to iMovie?

  • Problem importing animation codec video from Motion.

Whenever I import a movie I made in motion at the preset animation codec Final Cut does not seem to recognize all of the layers. In one project in particular the text shows, but the background does not. Whenever I open the movie in Quicktime everything shows fine...however when I import it in Final Cut it leaves out layers of the project.
    I do not understand.

It has something to do with the alpha channel. When I export with a solid backgroud, no transparency, it is fine. When I export wiht an alpha channel but tell final cut to ignore it....it works fine. But when teh alpha channel is set to straight, black or white....hte light wall does not show up.

  • Animation codec & DV codec used together

My client has provided me a snapzpro .mov of a powerpoint presentation he was giving. The movie uses the animation codec, 510 x 382 pixels, 22.35 FPS. He also has DV footage of his presentation. My job is to transition between the powerpoint .mov and presentation DV to produce a compelling timeline. It will be exported for use on a DVD.
I read the snapzpro mov into the FCP timeline and exported it out using the animation codec and resetting the FPS to 29.97 so I can edit it correctly. When I export it using the DV codec, the red type is terribly pixelated from the compression. If I export it using compressor, the result is better, but still not great.
I will be cutting between the DV and Animation mov and I would like some suggestions on a good workflow (what codec to use) and how to achieve the best possible result for the DVD.
