Quad And RAM Problem

Hey all
I just received the 2x1GB modules I ordered from OWC earlier this week... I installed them and unfortunately, the OS is not detecting them... I installed them in the first two available slots, moving outward... I've got 2x256MB at the moment from Apple
So I booted into the Hardware Test and discovered that it's reporting a POST FAILURE on DIMM2/J6900 on the Main window and when I examine the detail view, I see that it's seeing the two new modules... it reports a POST FAILURE on both but given that the main screen is reporting on J6900, I'm guessing that only one is failed and since they're paired, it's failing the 2nd one?
I called OWC and they suggested that I reset the PRAM (no effect) and that I try to install them in other slots... now, I was under the impression that the RAM must be installed in the slots sequentially... is that just a guideline or does it not actually work if I skip a slot? It's easy to test my self but if I don't have to disconnect the G5 again to find out, all the better...
Thanks!

I had the same problem but resolved it by booting in open firmware and reseting the computer. I suggest you do the same.
Put the two 1GB chips in the first paired slots and the two apple chips in the next slots
Boot up holding down Command + Option + O + F until you see the grey screen with text
then run each of these commands
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
The last one will cause the computer to reboot and you should see all your ram... I hope
Kevan

  • Z77GD-80 Boot and RAM Problems ( caused by ME Flash Fail )

Hi everyone , i recentlty updated my MB to Bios Version 1.2 and noticed that an option had been added => update bios and ME
tried that option , chosen the same bios file ( 1.2 ) , a warning popup came up that mentioned to not unplug or shutdown the system , the flashing went well until it decided to flash the "ME".
the device rebooted after the the flashing reached 100% ( i think that was when the BIOS flash ended )  ,another flashing started after the Reboot but it did not complete and rebooted @ 60%( ME flash ? )  ! since then i cannot boot using that Bios , the debugger keeps showing error 15 and 19 , going from one to another rapidly .
tried to boot using the second bios ( bios switch ) it did boot fine , but only detects half of my RAM ( 8 G ) tried each MB DIMM and Module separately and  all worked fine !
tried to flash the first bios via booting from the second but that didn't work from bios ( strange thing was that when i saved the second bios in USB it was only 6Mb and would not be detected to flash , but my downloaded bios are 8Mb and were available to chose for update )
1-if i try to only flash the bios it restart @ 100 % but then the same debugger error appears after reboot
2-if i try the BIOS and ME , same thing happens it restart @ 60% and the debugger error appears
tried AMI bios flasher for windows , and it did flash the BIOS just fine but when it tries the ME , it keeps erroring that this Bios doesn't support this function
so i had 2 question in mind
1- How can i flash the ME to solve my problems ?
2- why is half of my ram not detected in the second Bios ?
    any help would be appreciated
    thansk

    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
Use the forum flash tool to prepare a usb stick for flashing. Download the attached bios to your desktop and use option 1 of the tool, point the tool at the entire archive. After the flash (It will flash the me as well) do a full cmos clear with the cord removed.
Then re-install the ME drivers inside windows.
In regards to the non working bios, first try a full cmos clear, if that fails:

  • White MB early 2009 and RAM - problems?

    Hello,
anyone has any experiences with RAM upgrades for the new NVidia white? I bought some 'quality' RAM (4 Gig kit, Mac memory, DDR2, 667MHz, PC2-5300, CL4) but they only cause trouble .... ran memtest 4.21 and lots of errors occur.
So, is that a problem with compatibility with the NVidia MacBook or are the sticks erratic?
Anyone having any experiences with Corsair Ram or comparable?
    thanks
    Steff

    Thanks for your reply ...
Your Macbook requires SO-DIMMs) of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, use ram that meets that spec and you'll be fine.>>
I had that ... 5300 DDR2, 667MHz, CL4 .... so it is not the whole thing .... On that site there is just the normal blahblah, nothing specific .... Bought that computer (decided for it), so I know the standard blahblah ....
I think that once you have some decent ram from a decent vendor that meets Apple's specs you'll not wish to go back to windows! >>
I have been a Mac user since I left the Atari ... so it would definitely not be 'going back to Windows' ....
dump the v4 beta. Use the current version 3.2.3 and I think you'll have no problems.>>
Maybe ... but if a beta software does not even work with the stuff of the developer ....
    thanks

  • T500 TurboMemory , Volume and RAM problems

Recently I found some problems with my T500.
1.Everytime when I restart the computer , the harddisk led will keep illuminating for about 5~7minutes. I checked "TaskManager -Resource Monitor -Disk"   found "\Device\HarddiskVolume1\ReadyBoost.sfcache" was writing in high speed.  Is it normal?
2.Everytime when I restart the computer, the volume was set to  50db, whatever I set before the restart, it will go back to 50, even set to mute.... Why?
3.I updated the RAM to 3G(1 2G single and 1 1G singal), from my computer I can see it says 3G memory, But in TaskManager only 2.5G can be used.  32bit Vista-B ATI 3650 graphic card.....why?

I dont know about the 2nd problem you have mentioned here but as for the first one I guess that's a little bit unsual. It shouldn't be busy more than 2-3 mins unless you have lots of programms to load.
As for the last problem you should be able to see 3GB installed I guess but I am not sure if you can use it since you have vista 32. I know that you definately will have problems with 4GB but not sure about 3GB.

  • Battery Questions and RAM problems in TP S531

    Hey there,
I got my first Thinkpad (S531) about a month ago and the good news is I really like working with a Thinkpad. However, there are a few things and issues that reading the forums did not yet solve.
First a bit of technical info about my system:
    Model: Thinkpad S531
    OS: Win 8.1 (self-install)
    CPU: Intel Core i5 3337U @1.8Ghz
    RAM: 6 GB (2GB+4GB)
GPU: AMD Radeon HD8670M (+Intel HD Graphics 4000)
    1) Battery Life.
I know there are plenty of posts about this but I have a quite specific question all the forum posts I found couldn't answer: Does the battery at the point where the power level reaches 100% stop charging and power is taken only from the power connenctor? If so, is there a way of only charging the battery up to about 80% and then start using only the connector for power supply?
    2) RAM.
I bought my Thinkpad with 6GB RAM installed, a fixed 2 GB piece somewhere fixed on the motherboard and a 4GB piece in a normal RAM slot. Now, I know that this isn't ideal for dualchannelling, but that's got nothing to do with this problem. Rather it seems, that Windows only manages to access 2GB, according to what I read from the Task Manager (screenshot attached) What can I do to make all 6GB accessible?

    Hello Ihateallfruit,
It sounds like you are concerned about the Standby Time increasing using your battery excessively. Here is some info about what the Standby Time indicates and why it keeps counting up when the device is asleep from the article named:
iOS: About standby and usage time
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1805
View Standby to see the amount of time the device has been turned on since its last full charge, including the time the device has been asleep.
Here is another webpage that you can use to help optimize your settings to extend your battery life:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Mavericks and RAM problems

Since upgrading to Mavericks I have been having a great deal of problems with RAM.  I have 16GB installed yet it is quickly being all used to the extent the system basically shuts down as Apps are being paused.
Looking in Activity Monitor it appears the main culprit is Calendaragent which at times is taking up 10GB of RAM.
I am regularly quitting Calendaragent through Activity Monitor but this only gives me a brief reprieve before Calendaragent is again becoming bloated.
I have had this Macbook Pro for about 15 months with no problems until I upgradeed to Mavericks.
I haven't been able to find a solution.  Any ideas?

    Same issue here :-(
I deleted Calendars Cache as described here, and that seems to have fixed it: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22480543#22480543

No what I meant was under the tagan line and the amps on your different voltage rails...like on my 12v rail I have 30a.  If you psu doesnt have enough juice to properly run your system, you will get memory errors and such cause you dont have enough power going to all of the things that need power thereby causing your instability.  Just my 2 cents.

  • Slow boot and RAM Problems?

My system began booting up very slow about a month or more back. It takes about 5 minutes to boot. I had a event that began a week back where the boot sequence would freeze on the RAM initialization step. So I took out one stick of the ram and it did boot but still took 5 min. or more to do so. I dont boot often but when I do Im not that patent and it is very anoying. I have almost decided to reinstall everything fresh to deal with that issue but I am wondering if the RAM issue may be the socket and not the ram itself. Can I put the 2nd ram stick of the pair in slot 4 instead of slot 3 with the first stick in slot 1 or do i need to pair 1 to 3 and 2 to 4. I also wonder if anyone has had this slow boot issue and if anything else could help me other than reinstall fresh? Thanks for any help.

For dual channel, slots 1 & 3, or 2 & 4 need to be used. Have you tested & tried each stick individually in slot 1? Before doing a complete fresh OS install, try a CMOS clear with the power cord removed, set Optimized Defaults, & only 1 stick RAM. I wouldn't rule out the PSU beginning to act up either. If possible, test with a single rail +12V PSU of around 30 amps. You might try running some HDD diagnostic tests, & have you run any checks for viruses?

  • IMac 2008 emc 2211 suddenly turns off and back on, RAM problem?

I have an iMac from 2008 emc 2211.
Two years ago i upgraded my RAM from 2GB to 4GB Crucial memories.
Two weeks ago my imac started to suddenly turn off and back on inmediatly. Recently it stared to happen more often to the point that it can't boot completely and show the desktop
I checked the power source and it was fine.
I opened the computer and pulled out the power supply and it seamed to be fine.
I tried to run the hardware test with the disk that came with the computer and it can't even finish the test because it turns off.
Before it couldn't boot anymore i checked if it was overheathing with smcFanControl and the temperature was always around 44C, so it was fine.
Could this be the crucial RAM that is failing?
    thanks in advance.

Ok, i've replaced the RAM and the power supply and the problem persist, so it seams to be the logic board that is failing.
    Any ideas?

  • After Effects Rendering Problem and RAM Preview Problem

I posted a question about this yesterday but I thought I would repost it with more detail!
I have a restless issue here with rendering and RAM preview. I am simply trying to create a viral ad which uses the cloning effect I achieved with masking for my college coursework and I have completed the process of creation but I have ran into problems. The RAM preview will only play up to a certain point then it will just stop and this effects the final render because it gets to the point in the rendering where the RAM preview stops and then a message will pop up saying the rendering has failed or something? (Screenshots Below)
I have tried RAM previewing just one of the three videos I am using and it still stops at the same point.
I am using .avi files and have tried converting to .mov, .mp4, .wmv all of which didn't work.
I am using After Effects CS4 ver 9.0.0.346
    My computer specs
AMD SEMPRON processor 2.7Ghz (single core)
2GB RAM (I know its not alot ;))
    ATI Radeon HD 5600 512mb
    Creative audigy 2 sound card
    Windows XP Serivice Pack 3
It's quite urgent and I hope someone can help!
    Cheers!

With just 2GB of RAM, I'm impressed that you can generate that much of a RAM preview.  RAM previews use RAM. When they run out, they stop.
Have you tried rendering the clip using the Render Queue.  If so, does it also report an error at a similar point?  If it renders correctly from the queue, you're done.  If it doesn't, you probably have a corrupt source file.

  • I got render and RAM preview problems. help?

i got render and RAM preview problems with after effects! please help me
when i started on a project earlier today the RAM preview was failing and it stoped making a preview after about a second, when i hit the RAM preview buttom again it continued to load and stoped again after a half second, and it continued to do that till it wasn't loading at all, just playing the same thing up even doe it haden't loaded the whole composition! BUT if i moved the (thing you see where you are on the timeline in need of a better name) it started loading a little more and then it stoped again.. so after alot of problems and moving i managed to make a RAM preview of the whole composition..
now the real problem: when i was done with my project and i was going to reender i did like this: i added my composition to the render queue, chosed my render settings and started to render, after exactly 37 frames it stoped and no window or anything poped up, the only thing that was telling me something was wrong was the render status, and it said: ''failed at 0;00;00;37'' that's not even a second! and BTW when i render after effects only uses 12% of my 6GB RAM memory.. i dont know what to do! i've tried other render settings but the same thing happens! can anyone help me?
BTW i'm swedish and only 14 so i might misspelled something..

Start here and make sure that you understand how RAM preview is supposed to work first:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/424030
What version of After Effects? Have you installed the recent updates? What operating system? What kind(s) of source footage? Has this ever worked before? What other software are you running? Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed? Are you rendering with OpenGL?
What are your Memory & Multiprocessing settings? Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing?

  • KT4 Ultra RAM problems and others

    Hi,
    just bought KT4 Ultra, with 512MB DDR-RAM 266/2100 CL 2,5 and Athlon XP 2100+, BIOS V1.2.
During boot-up the computer tells me, that I've got 1024 MB RAM although I only have 512MB. Linux says the same and RAM Test Software does too !! I can't install RedHat nor Windows XP, they always crash, prbably due to RAM problem.
I've already tried out all 3 memory slots.
Any suggestion what to do ?
Why does the computer not recognize any device on the 3rd IDE port ( neither IBM Deskstar w/ 40GB, LS 120 Drive, CD-ROM Drive). My BIOS doesn't show ANY options for the 3rd IDE port!
    TIA

  • Quad G5 Stability Problems / Slowness / Upgrade options?

Well, this is going to be a long post, so bear with me.
First, I'm totally Steve Job's dream. I bought the Mac Mini and it was a complete gateway drug, now I have a brand new PowerMac G5 Quadcore something or other. Okay. I use it for motion graphics work, mostly After Effects, but I've also got Final Cut Studio installed. I've had the G5 for a month now (I know it's almost obsolete by Mactel, but AE and Photoshop won't be available on Mactel for, like, eternity, so I upgraded early.)
So that's the setup. My problem is, the G5 quadcore tower is way less reliable than the Mac Mini was! The thing that impressed me about OS X and the mini was that nothing ever went wrong. I could be burning a DVD, listening to something on iTunes and doing a complex AE render, and Mac mini would figure it all out. I never had to reboot Mac mini unless a software update demanded it.
I've had two occassions now where the G5 tower completely crashed. I'll go over them in details.
The first time, I was using AE and previewing on a camcorder/TV over Firewire. So the set up is, PowerMac -> camcorder (Firewire) -> TV (S-video).
Okay, the first thing I did that might be weird is: I was running activity monitor during my AE renders to see the extent to which 4 cores were actually being used. I discovered to my surprise that even during my most complicated renders, PowerMac was only using 50% of its processing power. It engaged all 4 cores, but each of them never went over the 50% or maybe 60% utilitization. So either AE just isn't optimized, or there's an upgrade I should perform. (See details below.)
Okay, next weird thing. I put PowerMac to sleep with the camcorder still on, and woke PowerMac up a little later to continue working. Now I'd left the camcorder on this whole time. When I went back into AE and told it to preview to the Firewire again, PowerMac froze. I got the spinning beach ball. I thought, "Oh, sometimes that happen, I'll just wait and let PowerMac sort itself out." An hour later, though, I still had the spinning beach ball, so I had to reboot.
A day or so later, something similar happened. I was doing a complex render in AE. I had 20 minutes remaining. Knowing that the CPU was only used to 50%, I decided to watch the latest Channel Frederator in iTunes while the render completed. I turned iTunes to full screen mode to watch Frederator. After about ten minutes of this, I got a freaking KERNEL PANIC! I got weird text dumped at the top of the screen, and a sound sample from the Frederator I was watching was repeating over and over out of the speakers. Unfortunately I didn't think to write down the weird text.
So here (at last) are my questions:
    1. Why is PowerMac only using 50% of its CPU during renders? (Bear in mind, AE isn't GPU-enabled to my knowledge. So its renders are all CPU.) My only guess is, that the renders are memory or disk constrained. Adobe does recommend that I get a second hard drive for AE to store its temporary working files, so that AE and the OS X swap space aren't competing with each other. Does this make sense to anyone else? Also, I have 1.5 gig memory, is that too little?
    2. What is up with these crashes? This is like Windows XP land. Again, what sold me on the all-Mac graphics setup was the stability of the Mac mini.
2.a. Are there hardware diagnostics or software tests built-in to OS X that I can run to troubleshoot?
2.b. While setting up PowerMac, I copied system settings (and everything else) from Mac mini. I'm worried that there's a configuration file somewhere that's confusing PowerMac into thinking it's secretly a Mac mini or something. Of course, when I say that out loud, it sounds completely silly.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Paul
    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    1. Only certain filters and effects in AE are well multithreaded and can take advantage of the four cores. I use AE a lot as well, and I can tell you this is normal. What you want to consider is buying the Nucleo plug-in from Gridiron Software at http://www.gridironxfactor.com/products/nucleo_overview.asp
This plug-in will allow AE to fully utilize all four cores on almost anything you're working on, except for effects that are temporally dependent, such as Particle Playground. You need to be using AE 6.5 or 7 to use Nucleo. I bought it and it's one of the best things I could've done. However, your 1.5 GB of RAM is rather small for using AE on a Quad. I'd consider bumping the RAM up to 4 - 4.5GB or so. If you AE 7, it can utilize 3 GB of RAM (previous versions were limited to 2GB).
    2. I bet you got the beachball when you returned from sleep because the camera had also gone to sleep and didn't wake up. I imagine that if you'd turned the camera off after waking up from sleep (or power cycled the camera - turn it off and then right back on) the beachball wouldn't have occured or would have gone away. I'm pretty sure I've had this happen to me on my Quad and PowerBook, and this always solved it. Not sure as to the reasons for the KP you got when using iTunes... sorry.
2a. Your machine would have come with the Apple Hardware Test which can be used to test the hardware of your machine. It's on the restore disc that came with the computer. You'l need to boot from the CD while holding down the option key. This will present you with a list of boot options, one of which will be the AHT. For testing memory, I'd recommend using Memtest which you can get a http://www.memtestosx.com For best results, you need to start in single-user mode so that it can test as much RAM as possible.
2b. I did a clean install of all my applications and whatnot on my Quad to avoid a problem like this... It's very time consuming, though. If you're concerned about this, you could delete all the preferences files from the computer and reboot, but you'll then have to reset your prefs in all your apps, and may have reenter some serial numbers as well. In any event, I wouldn't try this unless you start to have frequent issues. My Quad has KP'd once (while using Toast, I believe), but hasn't done so since. My PowerBook has never had a kernel panic.

  • Latency setting issues, and other problems.

Hello, this is my first time posting on a forum, and I wouldn't be here if I didn't think this was an interesting problem.
My computer (Hardware listings below) has a microphone lag issue.  I tested it by plugging in my microphone and recording the recording through speakers, and it is very clearly lag.  I am in need of a solution to that, but that is just where my problem starts.  Whenever I try and load in an MPEG4 audio file, it seems to play and then all of my sound goes out on my system.  Sometimes the sound goes out immediately after opening the program.  The way I treat it is by putting my computer to sleep and waking it up, and the sound then returns until the program decides to randomly shut it down again.  The mixing tables are reacting on screen, but there are no system sounds coming out at all.  On top of that, when trying to fix my latency issues, it didn't help enough moving it down to 30 on the hardware options for the MME settings.  It could be my computer is too slow or something, but I also tried switching it to asio.  I have ASIO4all and I don't know if I should be running it, as I don't know too much about how my system would interact with all of these programs.  I run Audition 5.5 fully legally, and I can update with whatever.  I just want to be able to overdub without any lag, and everything I do to try and fix it makes a new problem happen.  I am using a microphone plugged into the 3.5mm microphone slot on the motherboard.  It's a Sure mic plugged in through an SLR to Quarter Inch male cable
